Sure, why not? If the person is kind, responsible, and trustworthy I would give him a chance.

I would, just because I know my husband would make a FANTASTIC manny, so there have to be other guys like him.

Obviously I'd check them out carefully.

The word manny makes me chuckle.

It makes me think of the Friends episode with Freddy Prince Jr.

But yes, if my LO bonded the most with a manny I would not be against it. If he's qualified and fits in with our family, why not! However, the likelihood of us being able to have a nanny or manny is slim to none right now!

i think i would be ok with it. itwould be different at first but i would like to think i would be ok with without worrying abut gender roles and all that.

I would totally hire a manny! Young guys tend to be awesome with kids, and kids seem to gravitate to them it seems. I think I would actually prefer to have a manny than a female nanny.

I would never be able to afford either, but I wouldn't NOT hire someone because of their gender--I'd hire the best possible candidate regardless.

What if someone said they wouldn't hire women for a particular job simply because they're female? An antiquated way of thinking about either gender, I think.

If I had an older boy I'd be more prone to hire a manny. I watch Beverly Hills Nannies and there's a family with twin girls and a boy, and the poor boy wanted a guy nanny so bad to play with. I can understand that, and if my son was old enough to need a guy around to play sports with, etc, I think it would be a good idea. If my child was an infant, I don't think I'd care either way if it was a boy or girl, as long as they're qualified.

I voted for neither since I really like being in a daycare center, but if I were going to have in-home care, I'd be totally cool with a guy. I happen to have a son, but I can't imagine I'd feel differently with a daughter.

Probably not? I feel bad saying it, but I would prefer a female. I wouldn't mind so much if there were male employees at a daycare, as long as they weren't the majority.

I know this is an old thread but it has me seriously scratching my head. What's so silly or objectionable about a man taking care of a child?

@MoonMoon: @erinbaderin: Agreed, I would be ok with it. I can definitely understand the reasons why people would be uncomfortable with hiring a male nanny, and I think I've also been conditioned to find it strange and that might also be my first instinct. However, at the same time, as a woman in a predominantly male profession, I have a lot of sympathy for people who struggle to be accepted in a career that they are passionate about because of their gender. There are message boards on the internet with people talking about how women have contributed nothing of worth to my profession, got where they were by sleeping around, just aren't as good as men because they are too focused on their kids, etc and on occasion these attitudes come out IRL as well. As someone who has worked super hard to be good at my job, it sucks that some people discount people like me just because we're not men. And the fact that it is so deeply ingrained also makes me worry that we have a long ways to go in this regard. So I would try not to do the same towards a guy who works in childcare.

I don't think I would hire a manny or nanny, unless it was someone I personally knew, and for a long time. I have trust issues.

@periwinklebee: that is really well put. I enjoyed hearing your perspective based on your career. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum, entering a career that is heavily female, and very interested in finding ways of supporting men who want to enter it (nursing).

We hired a nanny when DS was 0-11 months old. While she helped us out I didn't enjoy that experience at all. I figure that I am a much more "specific" kind of mom and I want my child to be raised my way...

I do not think we would ever hire a nanny again, and if we ever need a babysitter, I would still prefer female. I can't trust a man. Wasn't there a certain study that there is a bigger chance for male to be a pedophile than female (or did I misread)? I don't trust strangers with my child let along adding that chance in the mix.

Statistically I've heard that men are more likely to sexually abuse children....? And you can do all the background checks and references you want, but usually abuse is a horrifying unanticipated surprise....
