What healthy foods have you had luck with? My 2yo has become incredibly picky with foods. She'll eat most fruits and green beans. Unfortunately she's decided she hates eggs and meat/tofu unless it's covered in sauce.

Daughter is three years old and we have an appt at the local children's hospital to have her tested. What was your experience? What test (scratch or blood) did you have done? What steps did you take once you had the test done?

Edit- adding I know this is not a diagnosis. We are just doing to find out what she is actually allergic to. Ped has already told us there isn't much we can do other than allergy meds after the test. She is so miserable right now :(

Does anyone's LO have an allergy that manifests as just hives? If so, what is it that they are allergic to?

DS2 had a big outbreak of hives 2 weeks ago. We took him to the doctor and got an rx for daily zyrtec and a referral to an allergist to find the cause. He didn't have any more reactions while on the zyrtec, but we had to discontinue it to prep for the allergist appointment. Since then he's had a reaction shortly after breakfast both mornings. His big reaction two weeks ago was also right after breakfast. Yesterday I was convinced it was strawberries causing it, but he had none today and now the only thing all the meals had in common is milk. But he has milk with lunch and dinner and hasn't had reactions after those mealtimes... I know the whole point of the allergist appt is to figure this out, but it's not until next Thursday and I'd like to try and not give him whatever is causing this in the meantime, so I'm hoping for new ideas of things I could try avoiding.

So DH needs to be on a low fodmap diet. We eat pretty balanced almost all home cooked meals and he has been gluten free for 6 months now and that was an easy transition for all of us.

I am struggling to figure out how to support his dietary needs while also feeding the kids. Some of this is because the list of low fodmap foods is complicated and not obvious and its all new.

I would love tips from others about low fodmap diets and also managing restricted diets in general.

So my husband has major lactose intolerance. I also did as well when I was a baby and had to be on soy milk. My daughter also is sensitive to milk and get rashes and poops a ton all day if she drinks milk. I'm worried my almost 2 weeks old also is sensitive to dairy or milk. She poops a ton for a formula fed baby. Like easily 5 times a day. Sometimes its looks a tad watery. She also gets randomly really gassy and has to burp a ton. She acts like she has trapped gas. Her bottom will get so red from pooping a ton. Does this sound like a milk/dairy sensitivity or intolerance to you ladies?

I’m just curious what your experience was if anyone dealt with this. I’m not overly worried about it as I also had a milk allergy growing up but my mom has no memory of the details :silly:

We think baby (9m) also has allergies to eggs (like scrambled) and raspberries, so far. Thankfully peanut is fine. These guesses are based on hives and bumpy bright red rash from skin contact, as well as crying and refusal to eat more. I’m seeing the pedi soon so planning to ask of course but looking to see what it was like for others.

What was your baby able to eat related to milk? So far she seems ok with baby yogurt (doesn’t fuss) so I thought maybe it was different but I did notice a contact bumpy rash on her arm today - so prolonged contact was bad. Baked goods like bread have not seemed problematic. But a couple things with more pronounced milk ingredient were a no go (like she tried Mac n cheese).

Also, did you do any testing related to this or just wait it out? When/if did your baby grow out of it? Did you do a milk substitute after 1? She’s still bf and me having dairy hasn’t been an issue and I have another kid who doesn’t like milk so still won’t drink it at 4 (but eats other dairy).

Thanks for any experience!

I'm so bummed. Logan just got retested for his peanut and tree nut allergies as well as to get a baseline for his sesame. All his numbers are so much WORSE! Sesame is at 17.90 kU/L, which is horrible. And Peanut went from 11.00 kU/L to 44.00 kU/L! I'm so disheartened! And all our tree nut numbers doubled. They were fairly low to start with (the highest being around 2.3 kU/L) and I was hoping maybe he'd outgrow tree nuts, but that's not looking to be the case.

Looking for any words of encouragement or experience with these types of high numbers increasing...

After a skin prick test yesterday, we found out that DD (6mo) is allergic to peanuts and eggs -- so far. Blood test is the next step to find out what else.

Here's my confusion. She's EBF, and I eat eeeeverything, including plenty of peanuts (Reese's, yum!) and eggs several times a week. Baby has no reaction to anything. She has mild eczema, but it doesn't really flare up, and it's pretty under control. The doctor said to keep my diet the same. I know so many moms who had to cut things out of their diet for their allergic EBF babies, so what gives?

I'm also kind of in a state of denial about the allergies. No one else in our families has any allergies that we know of, so I was really surprised at the result. I think I just need someone to knock some sense into me and say that even though she's not reacting to anything I'm eating, that that doesn't mean she's not allergic.

ETA: I'm definitely posing this question to the allergist when we go back to him soon, but just wanted to hear from anyone else who might have experience here.

If you’ve developed a food allergy as an adult, what has your experience been? Did you see an allergist about it? Or just avoid the food? I seem to be becoming intolerant/allergic to quinoa, which I had been eating for years with no problem. I’ve had some issues over the last few months when I’ve eaten it, and then I had a pretty bad reaction to it last week. It’s an easy enough food to avoid, but I’m wondering if I should see a doctor, given the severity of the last reaction?

Like it says- are your schools nut free? What about other allergens?

At my daughter’s preschool it was a nut free school. Parents brought it snacks that had to be safe and still in the packaging, so no cross contamination, and for parties and such you couldn’t bring home made goods. Even fruit was only supposed to be cut there with their knives and cutting boards. For lunches you obviously could prepare your own but had to write “no nuts” on anything that wasn’t in its original packaging so they knew you had checked (like veggie straws were fine in a baggy but the Trader Joe’s brand that was made in a facility that processes nuts were not). I know when they have other allergies in a specific class they more severely limit what the parents can bring as a class snack.

Her new school has no limitations and it’s so strange to me. She went to camp there and I felt so weird sending her with real peanut butter, but they said since it’s a shared space (in a church where other groups use it too) they can’t really control it. There are no food allergies in her class this year so I guess I’ll just send regular peanut butter...

I am lucky we have no food allergies but I try to be as sensitive as I can to those that do.

Does anyone have experience with toddler constipation linked to a gluten sensitivity?

I had my three and a half year old in to the doctor for something unrelated this week and we saw a different doctor in the practice than we usually do. He was glancing back through her chart and saw lots of notes on her ongoing constipation, frequent complains of upset tummy, and very, very picky eating struggles and mentioned it as something to look into. We've been focusing on eliminating dairy, pushing fluids, fruits, fiber, whole grains, probiotics, etc. and gluten isn't something we've looked into so far.

We have an appointment with her regular doctor next week, but in the meantime I'm curious if anyone has experience with gluten making a difference or being a concern linked to constipation?

I've been reading up, and current research suggests to introduce allergens between 4 and 6 months.

For most foods that seems easy enough, but how do you handle that with gluten? It's not like there's bread baby food...

I'm particularly interested since there's a genetic component for celiac and they're saying introducing wheat early (between 4 and 6 months) may have a link to being able to tolerate it. Because I have celiac, he's had no exposure through pregnancy or breast feeding.

This is a follow-up to my post last week. My 2-month-old daughter has been presumed to have a dairy intolerance due to green, mucusy stools. I’ve been dairy free for 2 weeks tomorrow. So far, her poop has gone back to regular brown/yellow but has occasionally been green again. It’s also still mucusy. Doctor suggested I try cutting out soy as well. I have no problem doing that, but wanted to ask the community here if that helped your baby. How long did you wait between eliminations to see if there were results before eliminating more?

Hi bees :). We're newish foster parents (we have three bio kids: almost 6, 4.5, and 2.5) and we are expecting a 5.5 month old boy (4 months corrected) to join us early next week. He was put on Similac Alimentum because of a milk protein allergy that was found around early Jan when there was blood and mucous in his stool. As he will be nearing starting solids soon, I thought I could come here and ask if anyone had any recommendations/advice/resources to share with me. I haven't parented a child with any kind of allergy before, so I just want to know more and be prepared :). Thanks in advance!!

I've seen a2 milk in our grocery store recently and it claims that it's easier for digestion. Does anyone have experience with it for a kid who is sensitive to dairy? Do you feel like they've tolerated a2 milk any differently from "regular" milk?

My three year old had classic MSPI symptoms as a baby and seemingly still hasn't outgrown the dairy sensitivity. I'd hoped by almost three and a half that we'd be past this, but no luck so far. At this stage, whenever we try dairy again - even in very small doses - it usually ends in some kind of upset tummy and constipation. We've found keeping her on a dairy-free diet has worked out well. However, recently she's been helping herself to her little sister's (regular) milk cups. I probably just need to do a better job of making sure the right kid has the right cup at any given time...but I'm curious if offering little sister a2 milk might be a better option in case my older one gets a hold of it.

Any a2 milk drinkers out there who could weigh in if you feel like it's different from other milk?

Short story - is it possible to have a food allergy but no hives/rash, only vomiting? And would the reaction take 2 hours or so later?

Long story - (warning: mention of vomit below)
Dd, 19mo, ate some ritz peanut butter sandwich crackers on Saturday ~2pm. At 4pm she vomited a lot, all her lunch. The lunch was not digested at all, so perhaps food poisoning? No rash or hives anywhere on her. But a while later she rubbed her eyes a lot which I attributed to her not having a good nap that day.

Saturday was not the first time she had peanut butter but definitely a larger amount of PB. Prior to Saturday she had just eaten a fingertip's worth for a few days in a row when I first introduced it to her when she was ~1 y/o.

She drank a lot of water after and vomited some water ~5pm. I gave her some banana and Cheerios for dinner but she didn't seem to have much appetite. 7pm she vomited again but a smaller amount - the banana and Cheerios.

She was also coughing a lot so it might be from her coughing too hard.

Or could she have gotten sick from the lunch we ate from a restaurant. However DS and DH had the same lunch and didn't get sick.

The pedi said it's very hard to tell what it could be (allergy, cold, food poisoning, stomach virus) but that we should wait until she's 2 y/o to introduce peanuts again so that she could communicate to us if she's feeling itchy, sick etc. I really don't want to wait that long, what if she accidentally ingests something with peanuts from now until 2. No one in our family has any known allergies.

DS has a dairy allergy. Thank goodness DD does not. But she's about to turn 1 and while I am so ready to be done breastfeeding, I'm a little hesitant to put her on whole milk. The kids have separate sippy cups, but she loves to try and drink his and I'm a little worried about cross-contamination.

Fortunately DS just has digestional issues, nothing anaphylactic. But I still don't want to subject him to cross-contamination if I can help it.

How did you address one kid's allergies vs another?

my daughter is 2. She's allergic to eggs. She seems to have somewhat outgrown it a bit as if we unexpectedly gave it to her (like didn't know mac and cheese had eggs in it...) she will vomit 3h after the fact.
The allergist told us we should re-introduce egg using store-bought bake goods where eggs are the fifth ingredient in the list. Anybody has suggestions or know a product I could buy?

I bought the hostess mini muffins (miscounting and egg is the 3rd ingredient) and after two of them, she vomited 3hours later. The donettes are only 2% or less of eggs... so she ate almost 2 of them and she was fine...

I didn't even know people had melon allergies. Unfortunately my 10 1/2 month babygirl has a melon allergy  We spent Thanksgiving with my parents and my mom gave her a banana pineapple honeydew juice drink right after she made it with the blender. The skin around her mouth was red right after she started having some (I spoonfed it to her) but she has eczema so I didn't really think anything of it, I just thought her eczema was flaring up around her mouth. After she finished, she was coughing a bit so I gave her water. An hour later her mouth was swollen and hot to the touch. I was freaking out and dh gave her childrens benadryl and we gave her a bath and it subsided. She didn't have any breathing problems but it was still really scary and awful, I felt so bad for her. She's had banana and pineapple plenty of times and never a problem but that was the first time she's had any type of melon so dh and I are going to take her to an allergist. For any of you with lo with melon allergy, did it ever go away as they got older?
