@Thehistoryofus: how long is your LO at daycare? DS is there 9-10 hours each day, and was taking four 4-oz bottles of breastmilk. He slept through the night most of the time, but I had a lot of people tell me that even that was too much. 1oz per hour. Well with him sleeping through the night he needed the 16 oz each day. There were times he could eat more than that, but we made up for it nursing at home. Sometimes daycare places don't understand that babies getting breast milk instead of formula don't need to increase the size of the bottles because the composition of breast milk changes over time to meet their needs and at 6ish months you add in solids. (DH was very concerned DS wasn't eating enough as he got older, so I researched it some. It was difficult to find hard answers on how exactly it changes and to make sure they were getting enough, but that was the overall consensus.) Do you use a pacifier? DS does and he takes one after nursing for comfort. He just wants to keep sucking, but not necessarily eat more.

At our 4 month appointment we went over milestones, had a physical exam, and had the 4 month immunizations. We talked over starting solids (Dr. said to wait until 6 months - we started about 10 days before he turned 6 months, although he's just lost the tongue thrust reflex in the last week, at 8 months!) It was a pretty standard appointment.

Is there a reason daycare wants bigger bottles? Even if she's a bit fussy afterward, it may just be that she wants to suck more, not because she's hungry. I'd be wary of supplementing if you're worried about supply, since that usually does eventually cause a decline.

We've held off on solids mainly for the allergy reasons, but there are others:

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html

Thanks so much for the information! We go on Friday.

@Maysprout: I think my supply may drop because I am working full time and its hard to pump enough during the day. I am pumping three times per day and sometimes in the car on the way to or from work and am usually getting about 16 ounces, just enough for her to have four 4 oz bottles. Daycare has asked us to increase the bottle size but I don't know that she really should be eating more than that (sometimes she only takes 3.5 ounces but sometimes she can take 5).

Our ped said we could introduce solids any time from 4 months on. In Europe they don't do a lot of cereal, so babies are given carrots as a first food. We waited until about 5 months to start solids because LO was not satisfied with is formula and we couldn't change to the next level until 6 months, so we had to introduce some food. We started with rice, but I switched to oatmeal after a few tries.

@Maysprout: he just asked me how long I planned to breastfeed... and if I were planning to introduce formula down the road, now would be a good time to get her used to the taste (with rice cereal). He's seen EBF babies refuse formula the older they are possibly because it tastes so different than breastmilk so thats a problem for some. I myself will likely keep going for a while since I'm a SAHM and my baby barely takes a bottle (which is a separate issue in itself)! But I am open to feeding formula in the future because you never know what can happen with your health/wellbeing/milk supply. I know what you are saying about feedback and supply, but I agree with the practice that solids shouldnt replace feedings... so technically one's milk supply shouldn't drop when babies start to eat, but for some women, it unfortunately does.

ETA: Oh and by mixing formula and cereal, he meant a super small amount of formula (just to make it liquidy a little)... He didn't mean a BOTTLE of it. It's just for taste reasons if one is planning to formula feed for whatever reason. I could also mix it with breastmilk or water... It was just another option.

Our doctor said no solids till 6 months but I still think it's worth asking. We gave our daughter tastes of things since 4 months, it wasn't an everyday thing but she got tastes and really liked it so I think it's worth at least asking which foods are good for tasting. Other than that it was just shots and measurements and I think he turned her to her belly to see how she lifted her head.

Is there a reason why you think your supply might tank?

@NYCaliMama: Why would an EBF baby need to get used to the taste of formula? I feel like that could back fire since breastfeeding supply works through feedback. If you switch to solids and start mixing in formula that could be a recipe for causing a dip in supply.

We just had our 4 month check up, my LO was born the end of July.

Our doctor said no to solids, he said to wait 6 months just in case of food allergies. But I'm sure all doctors say different things so it doesn't hurt to ask. We're already on formula so I don't have any answers to that.

Other than that they just asked normal things, like does she put weight on her legs when she "stands," does she react when you smile and to noises, etc, the doctor looked her over, they weighed and measured her, and she got her shots.

My husband and I always start a list of questions about a week before her apt. so we can keep adding as we think of something... we seem to always come up with a lot!

My baby is a July baby... The visit was the usual... We went over sleeping, peeing/pooping, (breast)feeding, milestones, vaccines, and starting solids. My ped suggested mixing rice cereal with formula even if she is EBF just so she gets used to the taste of formula. If you are worried about your milk going down (I am too a little), it might be something to consider.

ETA: we plan on starting solids at 6 months. My DD started at 6 months and I plan to for this baby as well. Dr. agreed it's fine to wait til then and I could start a little prior to 6 month visit though so if I have any big questions or concerns, we could discuss at 6 month visit.

Hi August Moms,

I wanted to know what you were expecting for your four month check ups? We are doing scheduled immunizations and I think she is on target for the milestones. I would like to talk about introducing solids (possibly thinking of starting with pieces of avocado?) I guess I also need to talk about how to supplement with formula in case my milk starts to tank.
