@Chuckles: That's a great rule of thumb!

Thanks all! Unfortunately we received word today that the open house is postponed to rising covid cases so we won't need sitters after all. I am so sad and so covid-fatigued right now. I was really looking forward to his open house.

@ChitownRo: I’d agree with this. We haven’t had a sitter in forever but used to pay $15/hr for mostly sleeping time (3 kids). If it’s between 1-2 hours I’d round up to $20 for both to earn future loyalty 🙂

@LadyDi: I’d ask them! Most people won’t name a sky high price. I live just outside Manhattan and babysitting rates are sky high, and if anyone asks the local group what to pay a sitter it’s always super top of the range replies (like $20-25, and buy them dinner and an Uber home).

But when I’ve had younger girls over the years (I had a HS girl years ago, then 2 local college girls more recently), I always ask and they’ll be like “I’m hoping for $12”. Or something like that.

I had a girl occasionally sitting for me last year that is a local masters student in analytics—she told me $10 for 2 kids! Lol. I was like…I’ll pay you $15. This was for daytime sitting where she was taking my kids places, not just night sitting where they were asleep.
So ask!

The same college girl texted me just this week asking if I need help this school year, and said my kids are so sweet and easy she wanted to ask me first before looking easy. I think my second can be a hellion, but my point is…the college student doesn’t seem eager to find a better paying sitting job, so it can’t hurt to ask their expectations and go from there.

Where do you live? I’m in the Chicago suburbs. I’d prob pay each of them $10/hour 🤷🏻‍♀️
We pay a 16 yo neighbor $15/hr to just hang out when the kids are sleeping.
(Nanny rates here for 3 kids are $25/hr cash for reference)

I have three boys (6, 3.5, and 2) and we are using a non-family babysitter for the first time EVER next week so DH and I can go to my older son's open house. Two 13 year old girls from our neighborhood are going to watch them for an hour or two in the evening after dinner. What should I pay them??? I have never done this before and both girls are just starting out in their babysitting adventures so I am not sure if they have a rate in mind.

Would your in laws take them for a sleepover? Time it for 2 days you have overlap? Our in laws live 45 mins away and were coming here Tuesday and Wednesday but they asked if they could just pick them up for a sleepover. UM YES. So DW packs their stuff, they leave their car at our place, take our car with seats back and keep them both. Then DW drives their car back and brings them home. We both get 2 full days of work that way. My parents live further and are taking my older for a week in August as well.

Seconding college students looking for work/income. If you have a local state or community college, you can reach out to the education faculty for recommendations. You would have to be clear about what your exposure is and what theirs is though if it's not someone you know already.

Any college students looking for part time work? Or, are there any retirees in your area who would be interested? My neighbors are in their early 60s and honestly more active than my husband and I are! I could see them being interested in something like that. Any chance your MIL could come to your house? Maybe spend the night or stack the days if possible?

@lady baltimore: not really but I’ll try to keep thinking about it. Good idea, I totally agree about mixing it up with kids to play with your kids, I would love this!

@catgirl: That would be ideal! None of my coworkers live near me and it seems like everyone has family to help out. Ugh not fair! I have a nurse friend who could potentially need help who works in a different sort of unit in a different hospital so that probably wouldn’t work.

Both of these ideas are great, and exactly what I mean, I hope someone else has one that would work for us!

I have a friend who is a nurse - she swaps childcare with another nurse friend. They work different days but figured they/their families are exposed to similar things from their jobs. So they watch each other's kids for one or two shifts (depending on the week). It also means all of the kids get a little playtime with each other. Is there someone from work you could figure out a swap with?

Do your kids have any friends from school or the neighborhood whose parents might be willing to watch them for you? I would love to have a solid excuse to have a neighbor's kids over one afternoon a week to give my own kid some social interaction. At least then you probably wouldn't be looking at a situation where your sitter was working in lots of different homes throughout the week.

I need help figuring this out! I have a 5yo and a 2 yo who will hopefully be in kindergarten and preschool this fall I need summer child care but I can’t figure out a good option. We are both essential workers who never stopped working outside the home, although I missed a lot of work when schools first closed since I had no child care. My husband has relatively low exposure risk at work since he works alone in a stall (mechanic welder) for most of the day, but does encounter coworkers wearing masks and at lunch without masks. I am a nurse, but I only work 2 days a week and at a children’s hospital so we have minimal cases. We probably have one or two at a time on the whole floor, we test everyone, and I haven’t even had a positive as my patient yet.

We only need child care in the hours our work overlaps, like 12-5, and it’s only 1 day a week since I work some weekends. Honestly, it’s always been a challenge to find good part time consistent baby sitters but now with covid it’s even harder! Last week my husband drove the kids to my mother in law’s and I picked them up, but it’s fairly inconvenient to do that, about 1 hour driving there in traffic and 30 min back to my house.

I was thinking about posting a job for 5 hours 2 days a week, at a good 5$ above the normal hourly rate as an incentive, but I am not really into the idea of sharing a babysitter with other families when we are still fairly strict about socializing. And I don’t know if sitters and families would be ok with our jobs and potential exposure anyways! Plus the sitter themselves... any advice or creative solutions?

So we had our first non family member sitter today for two hours, two kids.

When setting everything up I confirmed she charged $14/hr

We gave her $30

But I keep having this nagging feeling we did it wrong...,, was it supposed to be $14/hr per kid?

She didn’t say anything ..... but please confirm for me that we didn’t totally screw up

@castilrm: thanks, yea all send and done I think an hour would cover it. I’m just not sure that much $ would be worth it to someone for the inconvenience of their afternoon! I haven’t seen any rideshare for kids around here yet but I’d definitely be open to that! I think I might see if administration will share who else lives in our town that attends, maybe I can just pay another mom to do it. Thanks!

Ps depending on where you live, your child’s age and her general independence level, you may also want to look at ride share options that service kids (often the drivers are nannies). I know a few parents who have done this, but their kids were on the older side (10 and up).

Does she need to do anything else, like walk into the school to pick up your daughter and then walk her into aftercare? Like is overall time spent about an hour? If so, I’d probably lean toward just paying whatever the hourly wage is for a solo care nanny in your area. Here, that runs $22-25 an hour. I’d probably err on the side of $25 an hour to keep in mind that she’s doing an hour of driving (to school, to aftercare, and then back home) each day and should get gas money.

My DD might be starting a new school that is not very convenient to either my or DH’s jobs or my other kids schools and daycares. I’m considering hiring someone (a babysitter we’ve used before) to just pick her up at school and drop her off at an aftercare place, but trying to figure out if that makes sense or if I should just pay her to also watch her until we get home.

So what would you pay for someone to drive about 20 minutes to get your kid and another 20 minutes to drop her off somewhere?

We have had our nanny accompany us on a trip.... its a little different because we paid her 8+ hours a day anyway, so she just kept getting her full-time salary while we were away. We paid for her flights, she paid for lodging.... We discussed all the plans prior to leaving.

I would think for a babysitter agreement, you could discuss a flat rate that she would be agreeable to. And definitely pay for lift tickets. Plan out exactly when you will want her, and make sure you're all on the same page. Like 1 or 2 date nights, day-time coverage, etc.

Hi-I'm a former user who doesn't have an active account anymore, but wanted to chime in because we just did this so thought it might be of help:-).

We took our part-time nanny with us on a family trip this December. It was 3 total kids. A 6 year old, 5 year old, and an 18-month-old. My brother found this article before we went, and it illuminated a lot: https://www.nannycounsel.com/blog/traveling-with-your-nanny-its-your-vacation-not-theirs

I went on three trips like this as a sitter and nanny in my early 20s. This is what was done for me: All travel expenses, a designated room and bathroom for myself, all meals, etc. I went further, though, and set the following restrictions on us so she wouldn't be too overwhelmed:

*Paid her a flat daily rate for up to 8 hours of "on" time, and if we went beyond that she'd get an hourly rate.
*She was never with all three kids alone during the day (in our case, at the pool). It was either the two older kids who just needed a pool monitor, or the toddler, but never all three. However, she was responsible for getting all three kids to bed so the adults could go out to dinner.
*She had the afternoon off (generally 1-5 or so), and could go to the pool/beach/etc.
*I got her a massage at the local spa as an extra perk. She'd never had one and is still talking about it.

I sent an email outlining everything beforehand and told her there was 0 pressure in coming. I said we'd love to have her, but her future job with us had no bearing or anything like that. She came and seemed to love it. We stuck to our outlined rules, and we all had a really nice vacation.

Feel free to wall me if you'd like further details. Happy to talk by email!

My friend used to babysit for a couple of family’s near Killington so maybe you could look for someone up there already? Would save on some of the expense.

I’ve never done this, just because it’s so expensive, but I’ve been tempted. In my area, it’s generally expected that you pay their hourly rate (for 4 kids, not just the 2 if she’s watching all 4. Also, 4 kids seems like a handful for 1 sitter), plus all travel related expenses (lodging, food, room to herself), plus a flat rate for coming along on a working weekend trip. She’s giving up a weekend of her free time and even if she’s into skiing, it’s not super likely she’s normally go by herself? So the lift ticket it a gray area to me, but the pay for 4 kids plus an overnight flat rate stipend plus all travel expenses seems like a must.

Our former nanny went from full time with us to part time when my youngest was old enough for preschool. I found her another family who needed help just twice a week. They took her and her husband along on a trip to Europe to watch their kids m and paid the flights and separate hotel rooms plus hourly rate when she was with the kids alone.

@rnmcdonnell: will she have her own room (that you are paying for? Or are you getting a condo that she gets her own space in?

I’m no help, I don’t actually know how to approach it.

I’ve never done this but I did babysit when I was younger (never a situation like this but I would do an occasional overnight). I would definitely pay her on top of everything else. Maybe a flat rate per day that’s comparable to the hours she will actually be working with a little extra on top? It’s still a vacation but it’s not one she picked and she will be there to help you.

I would think of it as a work trip... while it might be fun, she still might have rather spent that time doing something else.
