I know it's not what you asked, but I would find it a bit tricky to get on and off a hiking backpack without help from another adult. I haven't used one regularly but when we borrowed one found it much harder to manage than a standard infant carrier. I wonder if she'd be more willing to use one of those sit stand strollers where the kid can stand facing you - i.e. so she's still really close to you but it's easier for her to get in and out? I've never personally tried one, but know some people who rave about the joovey caboose one - kid can sit, stand, or hop on and off easily if they want to walk. Of course doesn't help with hiking and maybe you've tried it or don't want to buy another stroller at this point...

We have a Dueter’s Kid Comfort and love it. Using it with our third and pleased with how it has held up. I researched a ton before getting it and I don’t remember why it was the pick  . It is comfortable and I often use it when out just for a walk since it gets him up and he can see a lot more.

Thanks everyone! We need it for hiking on a trip this summer too so I’ll check into these! I’d probably use it more often walking the neighborhood or at the zoo or similar so sounds like it would be fine.

@PinkElephant: That’s a great idea about putting it on from the back of the van!

+1 recommendation for the Osprey Poco (we have the Plus? I think?) although we also mostly only use it for hiking! DH will sometimes take one of our kiddos in it as he prefers wearing them in that instead of any of my soft structured carriers...it def is doable for target or whatever, too!! Our average sized 3 year old fits in it comfortably.

We were gifted a Kelty hiking backpack at my shower and it is great. DD is only 18 months, but she’s almost 30lbs and 34 inches and it works really well with plenty of room to grow. She likes it enough that a couple times she’s tried to climb in in the living room when it’s just out. She sits about the same height as when we back carry in the ergo, and it carries like a lightish backpacking rig. It does take 2 people to get the baby in/backpack on for us, so if you want something you can do independently that’s worth knowing although I’m pretty confident that would be true of any backpack. We generally don’t use it for day to day carrying because she loves to walk, but it’s great when we do use it.

We have an Osprey Poco Premium backpack carrier and love it, although I have to admit we really only use it for actual hiking, not day to day carrying. I don’t think the height it places the child at would be a true problem walking around Target (for example), but it requires a little getting used to just in terms of balance/special awareness.

We’ve had ours for about eight years (!!) since our oldest was around one, and have used it through three kids (youngest is now 4.5). It’s still in great shape, so I’d also say buying a used one would be a good option for you. I think SIL would like me to hand ours down to her soon, but I still use it for my small 4.5 year old. She’s somewhere around 33 lbs I think, and maybe 37-38 inches, and while it’s definitely a tighter fit on her now than when she was, say, two, she is still pretty comfy. I’m pretty comfortable carrying her. The pack is still kind of hot, but it’s better than having preschooler body heat smushed up against you when it’s 90 out. The carrier stands on its own to load the kiddo in, but it can be hard to lift from the ground onto your back without help when the child is older/larger; I’d suggest putting the backpack on from the back of your car trunk if you have a van/SUV, or from a bench.

Ours is exactly this one, but similar newer models are available: https://www.rei.com/product/828440/osprey-poco-premium-child-carrier

I’m pretty sure this is a unicorn but figured I’d ask ...

Our youngest will be 3 in August and (I think) weighs 30-some pounds. She still wants to be carried a lot and isn’t always content to sit in the stroller. But we live in Texas and it’s summer so I can’t handle a carrier where she’s plastered right on me in a back or front carry. We tried a cheaper hiking backpack carrier but it was too heavy to be doable very long and also she didn’t like it - I think it was a bit small for her.

Are expensive hiking carriers worth it or still too heavy with a kid this age? Would it be helpful to get one of those hip pads where it takes some of the weight but they’re not strapped in? Other ideas?? Thank you!

Thanks everyone - I think I need to try it more around the house and see how it works. I’ve really only done that once recently and she stayed in a little while. I’ve been spoiled on fussy kids because dh was furloughed for a while - so I could pass them off to make dinner or whatever - but that’s ending soon!

I carry my almost 3 year old in a back carry at least once a month and have even carried my 5 year old a few times. But we've always been big baby wearers and will often choose that over the stroller. I also use it in the house when fussy kids want to be held.

for around the house, facing in (he is a snuggle bug). For longer carries, on my back. But also, I couldn't carry him in my standard tula (even though technically he is within the weight limit), I had to go up to the toddler tula last year

He’s 30 months now. I still put him up in the toddler tula I have on nights that he is just a crank pot. It calms him down. He also loves it if we are having a family dance party.

My youngest is 22 months tomorrow and we're definitely not having more, and especially being home with so much stuff in a small house I've been in the mode to sell everything we don't need.

Try to decide if the lillebaby is worth keeping. I originally got it for flying which was great, but the earliest we'll do that again is Christmas (if then) when she'll be over two. I might have used it more this summer if we did indoor stuff like museums, but we're mostly close to home now and she won't stay in it for walks (plus it's already in the 90s here and getting worse).

any thoughts on whether I will regret selling it? I just can't think when I will really use it since we're not going anywhere for a long long time . . .

I have the lillebaby complete 360 if that matters. Thanks!

Sakura Bloom has like a wrap/carrier hybrid! I personally loved the boba/solly wraps; the first time I used it it helped to have someone do it with me; would she be willing to try? If not, I think the original Ergo is probably the easiest structure carrier out there vs all the fancy ones nowadays. Original Tula would be my 2nd choice in terms of ease.

Similar to above my baby loved the solly (bit of a pain to tie and carry around) and transitioned easily to the ergo (and I now have a lillebaby and it’s even more comfortable as they get heavier). For the little ages in the ergo I used a rolled up swaddle blanket as a little seat and kept their legs totally inside the carrier. Then one leg out once a bit bigger, eventually the standard two legs out when they are old enough.

I used the k'tan which is a strapless wrap, two loops of fabric and an extra strip that just gets tied like a belt. It was very easy to use but has to be sized so two dramatically different sized people could not use the same one.

I have a baby who loves to be worn in a boba wrap. Going back to work soon and i don't think our nanny is game to learn how to wrap it. Is there a simpler wrap - something between a moby/boba and an ergo type? Something that holds a baby similarly to the wraps?

How tall is your little? If really tall I might look for a toddler size carrier just for the extra support. If she's not super tall (or at least shorter torso) then you're likely fine with a baby sized carrier.

I have that same carrier and still use it some at 23 months. It's not amazingly cool or anything, you do still have a kid strapped to you but the mesh does help some. I find it super helpful for travel and when walking would be a pain. We recently went to a hockey game and it was great for navigating the crowded arena and parking lots. I wear E on my back or front facing in, I am too lazy to convert for hip carry. I really like this particular carrier and still get good use out of it at 23 months.

someone posted a lillebaby all seasons complete on my local mom page - I may not get that one but it got me thinking. My nearly 14 month old weighs about 23 lb and is average height. Last time we traveled in early August I still used our old school (circa 2011) ergo at the airport but I’m kind of over it by this size. I also could have used a carrier just being out today (and many days) because she’s not super keen on being in the stroller long but I need my hands free for the older kids and we’re on the go a lot. Unfortunately it’s still 95 here so cooler is better.

Any thoughts on this carrier or an alternative? Price is a factor since it won’t get a ton of use at this age (but I will resell if I can). Thanks!

ETA she’s close but not walking yet ... can’t decide how much that will affect my carrier needs. But probably I can still use it since she gets dragged around so much. I’m not really an older toddler carrier person though, at least so far.

@SteelerGirl: yeah I heard these were super good. I got a cheaper one but if I like using a ring sling I do plan on getting one of these.

I have the Sakura Bloom ring sling and love it. I found it easy to put on, felt very secure, and didn't strain my shoulder.
