I got a Lands End catalogue today and they had a lot of tankini options - some of them were a little grandma but some were really cute. Also they’re having a 40% off sale!

@PinkElephant: I just got it and I think I’m going to exchange for a true tankini, but otherwise it’s great. The structure of the top fits like a sports bra and then it has the patterned fabric layered on top, which makes it super supportive but not push up-y, which is what I was looking for. I ordered my normal size and it fits the way o would expect. My only complaint is that the crop part just wants to roll up under my bust.

@PinkElephant: I just ordered a crop top from Kavia because another mom at DD’s swim lesson this morning said that was where she got the suit she was wearing. She said they were decent quality and supportive, and the suit was as cute on as in the photos online, but agreed that they’re pricey.

@Lahela017: I had never heard of free country before. Their boy shorts are super cute.

I live for high waisted bottoms and "ruffle-y" type tops. Without the ruffle I look like I have sag bags, if I have any push up/underwire I look like a porn star. I have several bottoms from Target actually that work great, and some tops from Cupshe (they are also on amazon). I got solid colors so I can mix and match.

All of my favorite bathing suits are from Amazon. I have the opposite problem in that I am petite but I carry all of my extra weight in my stomach. I've bought a couple very high waisted bikinis and a tankini that I really like. This is probably my favorite and the one I feel most comfortable in (full disclosure the bottom as pilled a lot but I just wear it to the pool with my kids so I don't really care)

I think there are so many more options out there now compared to even like 5 years ago. I love all the more modest swim styles coming out!! I got this a couple years ago and love it. It is more flowy in the stomach and wasn't too expensive. Really though, if you just Google "modest swimwear" you'll probably find lots of options!

I’ve been getting targeted ads for a small company called Kavia - the suits look fun and stylish and there are some great options for better coverage. There are various rides to the bottoms and some cute crop top styles. The only thing that’s kept me from ordering is the seats are pretty pricey, and I’m unsure on sizing and I’m trying not to have to buy multiple sizes/pay for returns and restocking fees.

I’m petite and athletic, so comfortable with my body (and definitely not wanting the granny styles you mention that are all over the stores) but always worried about a boob popping out at the pool/ judgement from others/ wearing /suits meant for my tween daughters.

All of my bathing suits are from Lands End. I mostly wear rash guards with a bikini top under and a swim skirt or swim shorts. But I also have some regular bottoms and tankini tops. I love being able to mix and match with colors and patterns. Many of their swim pieces come in a long/tall and they offer different bust size options.

I’m 4 months postpartum with my second and still have a significant belly and more weight than at any other time in my life. I’m ok with my body, but looking to be a bit more covered this summer. I’m super tall (5’11” with a long torso) and have never found a one piece bathing suit that fits, so I’m hoping to find 1 or 2 stylish tankinis for the summer. I did some googling but so many places seem to be selling tankinis for 50-something women who haven’t updated their style since the early 90s. Where do people shop for modern, more covered up swimsuits?

I know about summersalt but they only sell 1 tankini in black or navy blue, which is sad compared to all their other offerings. Has anyone ever bought anything from Albion Fit? They do a lot of not quite tankinis, but I’m not sure about random websites.

I have four pairs! Two pairs of the OCA Lows in red and green, Catiba Pros in rose, and IBIs in light grey. I think the Catibas are the least comfortable, I find they rise a little high on my ankle, but they’re the cutest. The OCA Lows are in the middle, comfort-wise and cuteness wise. The IBIs are super comfortable, I wore them to Disney this year and never got sore feet, but I feel like they’re the least cute, although I still get a ton of wear out of them. I would say they run true to size/a little small, I wear an 8 or an 8.5 and I have all 8.5s. I also have really narrow feet and that might be why I rated them that order of comfort, that’s also the order from least to most flexible material (suede - canvas - knit).

I got my first pair recently. They’re comfy - I’m currently on a vacation with lots of walking and no blisters so far (and I am prone to them…). They run a tiny bit small. Most often I get shoes in 7.5 and I had to get 8 for those.

@nwm: @josina: @erinbaderin: Thank you so much! I do think we'll tell them. I think they'd be 100% down with the surprise, but also disappointed if they didn't feel like their outfit "went." And maybe my mom and I will shop together.

@alphagam84: I love these! Definitely not too matchy! And I love the personality!

@catgirl: Thank you! These are helpful. I love the dress all the way to the right in the third photo.

I think I'm going to try to find a dress for myself in the pink family. Then DH and my oldest in various blues (and probably also my dad) and my middle kiddo in yellow. My mom could do white or cream? I'll just tell my parents what we've picked and let them take it from there.

If anyone has dress suggestions, I'm all ears! I've ordered a couple to try.

I know my mom would freak out if I surprised her with a photo shoot. She would be mad and uncomfortable and it would ruin the whole thing. On the other hand my MIL would not care at all. SO I would really think about how your parents would respond.

I like the dress you posted! I would use that to make a palette - pull the various blues and either some of the coral/pink or yellow depending on what people look good in. And I would embrace casual clothes if that is what you will be most comfortable with.

We did family beach pictures with my parents last year. We had everyone wear shades of blue and white/cream. It worked really well. Also, if you get B&W copies it doesn't really matter what the colors are. I'm not sure of your kids ages but our 3 year old had no desire to hold still for any pictures. Some of my favorites are of him and my daughter just running around being silly. We had a lifestyle photographer who didn't do a lot of posed shots and it worked great.

Ok, so here's what I'd do. Pick a general colour family that you'd like everybody to tie into and go with shades of that, and then throw in a few pops in another colour family. I'd probably pick blue because that's my personal favourite, plus it gives you lots of options and makes bottoms easier, and then add some yellow to brighten it up - maybe a yellow polo here, yellow shorts there. You'll probably want to stay away from too many other patterns but try to work in maybe some other textures - linen, maybe a sleeveless sweater with a bit of texture to the knit or something. Personally I don't like when the pants are matching so I'd try to go with a mix - maybe some dark blue chino-type shorts or pants for some of the kids, some khaki, white, similar to the picture @josina posted.

And for your parents, I'd probably just tell them, then they have time to choose clothes that they'll be comfortable in and that they think flatter them.

Jealous! I would love to have vacation/beach photos someday.

I love beach photos with light colors. So if DD is in the patterned dress I'd pick solids for everyone else based off the colors on her dress.

one idea would be to just pick a very, very simple color scheme--like, white and khaki, or white, khaki and light blue (and then you could use the cute dress you already have and let your DD pop a little extra  )--that will be easy for you to make sure everyone is packing and will probably look nice on a beach.

i defer to you on when you want to tell them, but maybe you could say you are making reservations at a nice dinner place and use that as an excuse to inquire with your parents what they're bringing to wear and encourage them to bring something a little nicer if they're not already planning to?

I'm struggling to post pictures, but here's the dress I'm considering for DD (we already own this, but again, happy to choose something else).

Well, I pretty much always need fashion advice, but I'm starting to feel overwhelmed about a surprise photo shoot we've planned for my parents, when they (my mom and dad) travel with our family (me, DH, DS9, DS6, DD2) to Costa Rica this March. So far they do not know about the photo shoot. I think they'll be really thrilled, but it makes outfit planning hard. So:

1. When do you think we should tell them? If not until we're on the trip, should I try to choose clothes I think they'd like that "go" with the family's outfits? I don't want to be matchy-matchy, but my dad's a t-shirts or plaid kinda guy, so I'm just not sure what we'd end up with if we don't do any planning.

2. Help! I don't know what any of us should wear. We don't live anywhere near a beach, and today it was like 15 degrees, so I'm having a hard time visualizing. I truly don't think I have anything appropriate, so I'll likely need to purchase something. DH might have a neutral enough polo shirt, but I'm absolutely open to purchasing for anyone. I do have a dress I love for DD, and I'm kind of pulling inspiration from that, but I'm also not committed--if something works better for her, that's totally fine.

Thoughts? Advice? Direct links to the perfect dress? (I'm a pretty plain Jane dresser, so anything too far outside comfortable/casual will likely make me feel uncomfortable.)

Thanks!
