My 3rd grader is loving the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Other than Dog Man this is the first book series that he's really taken to and he wants to read all of the time. I love it that he's so into the books but he's going to plow through them pretty quickly. What are some similar books? I am looking more for chapter books than graphic novels.

These threads have always led me to my some of my favorite reads so I thought I'd start a new one to see if there are any new favorites out there.

My favorites lately have been This Is How It Always Is, Circe, and Daisy Jones and the Six. How about you?

My three favorites from 2021 were: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, People We Meet On Vacation, and Ready Player One.

DH got me a kindle for Christmas as I'll be going downtown on the train for work more and more this year. I feel like this is a strange question but how do you decide what books to read?

For some context, I used to read a lot before kids and when I used to take the train. But that was about 8 years ago. Since then, I haven't found the time to pick up many books and I have no idea what sort of books I even like anymore. I already use the Libby app for anything I have read but there are just too many choices. Any suggestions on how one would even start the process?

Seems like a such a silly question so I appreciate any suggestions you may have.

I feel like the news over the next month or so is going to get increasingly more depressing (considering it’s already pretty somber). Between the state of the world and work + distance learning stress, I’m desperate to find some happy, holiday Hallmark style romance fluff to watch and read. Any fav holiday themed movies and books you suggest?

Looking for suggestions for picture books with more "boyish" or at least gender-neutral themes. I have three little girls, ages almost 4, 6, and 8 (the older two read on their own, but still really love hearing picture books/reading them to each other)....and as you can imagine, a lot of our book collection is centered around unicorns, princesses, dollies kittens, puppies, etc. I love these stories, as do they, but am looking to branch out a little bit.

We'd love to read more about monsters, dragons, rockets.....but right now our library is closed and we have to make specific hold requests online, so it's hard to just browse without having a few specific titles to use as a starting point.

They LOVE "Creepy Carrots", "A Creepy Pair of Underwear", "Wolfie the Bunny", the "Pig the Pug" series...I'd like to find more things like this (ie, a little bit of silly is great). Thanks in advance!

My newly turned 5 year old seems to be having a fixation on death. His great grandmother (he did not know her well) recently died and he asks questions about death on a daily basis lately. He has been really sad about death, growing up, getting older, when he is going to die, etc. He cried about it at daycare this week. I asked his pediatrician for suggestions but he said he didn't know any books off the top of his head.

I'm glad he's asking and not just internalizing his fears but I think maybe an age appropriate book that is comforting would help. My general approach to parenting is age appropriate factual responses if that helps. We are not religious but I have discussed heaven with him as a means to try and soothe him. Any great books you can recommend?

Are they worth it? DD is 6 and each year her elementary school gets us to sign up for them. I never have signed up for them in the past because DD already has so much reading material. She has so many books we have bought her or she has gotten as gifts that she hasn't even had the chance to read yet, we are steadily working through them but since she is on chapter books now they take longer to finish. Her reading is quite good so I'm hesitant to get a magazine that's just mainly pictures She also has church magazines and lesson guides and in the summer we go the library.
I am thinking of signing up for a couple subcriptions to Kids national geographic and maybe american girl or highlights. but honestly my main reason for doing it is because she really wants the prizes for ordering through the school. Do your kids actually benefit from reading the magazines? Are there benefits to the magazines over books? and which ones do you subscribe to?

So I’ve suffered a history of losses and found myself unexpectedly pregnant again. Feeling hopeful that this time I may be on the road to a healthy baby.

If I am, as a first time mom - I have not really thought about life after pregnancy. I am an avid reader and think it’s time to start thinking about learning some tips and tools to raise a healthy, well adjusted and happy child who eventually becomes an independent and thoughtful adult and how I can be the best parent I can be. I know much of this comes with learning by both the parent and child in life but some of it seems to start early with the basics and I’d like to start learning about parenting now.

So any books or resources that any of the moms on here have found useful on any subject - sleeping, eating, developmental concepts, etc would be so welcome by me as I hopefully embark on a path to motherhood.

Thanks so very much ladies.

For those of you who set goals for the year, are you on track? Has anybody read anything great?

I set a goal of 104 books (2 a week) and so far I’ve read 88, so I’m right on track. The only problem is that the few times I’ve fallen behind it’s stressful! I’ve read some really good things this year so far. Some favourites: I’ll be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (do not read in the dark), Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks (wonderful short stories), This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel, Us Against You by Fredrik Backman (the sequel to Beartown, which was also wonderful), and right now I’m halfway through Beautiful Boy by David Sheff, which is fascinating but terrifying and heartbreaking.

Looking for a few book suggestions for my 3yo who will be a big brother in June. I'd love to get him 2 books; something to read now about the baby coming or being in mommy's belly. Then also a book 'from little sister' when baby is here about being a big brother, or how to be a helper with a new baby etc...

I looked on Amazon, but there are a bunch!

Does anyone have a good book or two to recommend that is specifically geared towards parenting girls? My oldest daughter is in Kindergarten (so 5.5 years old) and already dealing with some friend drama at school. I've got a pretty good gut feeling on how to handle things/what I want to convey to my daughters....but I frankly didn't expect to be facing this quite so young, and I'm having a hard time taking what I intended to tell her down to an age-appropriate level.

From what I can ascertain, she FEELS like she's on the receiving end of some nastiness; however, from listening to her it sounds like she may also be dishing it out herself. Nothing truly awful (it's mostly innocuous stuff like "Kate asked me to play, but I told her I didn't want to play on the spinner, I wanted to do monkey bars, and now she's not my friend"), but it's a big deal to her, and it has made me realize I need to start working with her on (a) being aware of how her actions and behavior impact others and (b) having some tools for coping with other girls' behavior when it hurts her feelings.

Thanks in advance!

Charlie (8) is super into Roald Dahl books and is making his way through all of them. I just bought him Wonder today because I really wanted him to read it. He's also read a bunch of Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume. The good classic books never go out of style!

What are your school-aged kids reading lately?
