@agold: @catgirl: Thanks! Ride safer looks interesting but my daughter is too small. I do think since she’s pretty petite, she’ll hopefully fit in the wayB for a few years. Plus I like that you can use it on the plane.

No personal experience but it is certainly an intriguing seat. I'd say the biggest downside is that for the price it has pretty low limits - weight limit of 50 pounds, height limit of 45 inches, and a harness height of 15.5 inches. But the convenience and ease of it is amazing. If price isn't an issue and you aren't overly concerned about the limits, it could be a great choice.

The ridesafer vests are more of a wearable booster, so would not be recommended for a 3.5 unless there were very unique circumstances. Ideally kids would be 5 or very close to it. It's also not approved for planes (not sure if your trips will involve flying).

@JJ2626: No, we don't have a car, so we don't really drive anywhere! Just taxis to airports and things like that. So I can't vouch for long trips in the seat, unfortunately.

@JJ2626: We used this! I liked it and would recommend it. It is very upright, though - not great for napping, but since you say your daughter doesn't nap in the car, that should be fine. The upright-ness didn't bother my daughter. It almost seems closer to sitting in the actual seat of the car.

Has anyone used the WayB Pico car seat? We are spending over a month traveling this summer and will be in a bunch of different cars so this seat looks super appealing since set up is easy and it’s light. It’s expensive though. Anyone have experience with it? Does it seem comfortable? We’d use it mostly for short trips but probably occasionally 1-2 hours. She doesn’t nap in the car but I want it to be comfy enough that she won’t whine. She’s almost 3.5yo, probably 30 pounds and 33 inches. Thank you!!

@Clementine12: It's been a couple of years, and to be honest I don't remember why I ruled out the Radian. I think it was down to Fllo vs Radian. I really really really wanted to make t three across work, and iirc the Fllo was the absolute narrowest?

The Fllos have been fine for us. They were, however, too small for my big-for-his-age son when he was 4yo, though. My daughters are 2.5 now and right around the middle percentiles for height and weight, and they're still fine in them.

@ElbieKay: can I ask what made you choose the Fllos? Do you like them? Any downside? Worth the money (v a Radian I'm thinking)? We're fitting 3 across in a Subaru outback and will need to buy 2 new seats (hoping to still use the same infant set...) and would love opinions on this!

I have a NextFit Zip in my sedan (Altima) and the sides are REALLY high for my car. I practically have to throw my kid in laying down and then adjust. Aside from that, it's been fine. Alternatively, the Britax Marathon in my husbands car seems to have a lot more room to get him in, but it could also be because his car is a small suv (CRV).

We had a Chicco infant seat, and bought 3 Chicco NextFits when LO outgrew the bucket (mine and DH's car, plus my mom's). I had no complaints about them when they were all we knew (though they are HEAVY), but I have had to replace 2 of them due to my car being hit, and have loved the replacement seats. The Nextfit is nice for babies and young toddlers, but it starts to be a lot of seat as kiddo gets older. Once she turned FF, DD preferred the Graco Slimfit and Safety 1st Grow & Go EX that we had, as she could climb into them more easily and perceived them to be "big kid seats". Were I starting over, I would consider the NextFit if we were skipping a bucket seat from birth, but go with a less bulky seat when purchasing for an older child.

Since your LO is outgrowing the infant seat by height, it is worth paying attention to the max harness height of the seats you are considering. My LO has consistently been around or about the 90th percentile for both height and weight, and our car seat changes have always been driven by her height (outgrowing limits) rather than her weight.

It's a great seat but I agree with others the high sides can make it challenging to load kids in certain vehicles. And the C shape of it can be less comfortable for older kids forward facing. It is relatively compact front to back though.

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it.

I have a Jeep Wrangler it will be going in - I do wonder if it might be hard to get her into it since it’s not a low vehicle. I think we will try it and see how it goes. We will be taking our first long trip next month (5.5 hours) and I’m thinking of getting it for that trip so she has more room to stretch out. I’m thinking we will go in the evening so that she falls asleep in a dark vehicle since we have only had her in the car for 30 minutes or so since birth (thanks pandemic).

We had and loved the chicco next fit zip. Both kids used it. It was really easy to clean (my older one is puker)
I don't think it took up more room refacing than any other full sized seat (in fact, it was on the smaller side of all seats for front to back size)
My only complaint would be the C-shape curve of the seat. It was great for sleeping on long drives, however the high sides could be an issue depending on your vehicle. We have a lower to the ground hatchback; I had it installed in my dads 4runner once and MAN was that a pain in my butt to lift the kids up and over the sides .
We are now onto the chicco my fit harnessed booster which I reallllly love as well.
This won't affect you now but its not a narrow seat. Fitting two adults plus the next fit will be a challenge depending on your car.

@MrsJBeeG: we have 2 NextFit zips and are big fans - DD1 got carsick for awhile and it was easy to take apart to wash and easy to install. They are pretty heavy - not great if you have to move the seat a lot. They are pretty big, especially rear facing. We are expecting baby #3 and need to purchase new carseats because we can't do 3 across with 2 nextfits.

My almost 8 months old is close to outgrowing her infant car seat by her height. Not her weight. I’m studying the next car seat to get her and am
Leaning towards a Chico - a convertible one. We like the NextFit Zip Air Mac Extended Use as it has a higher weight limit for longer use. Does anyone have this and like it? Just curious as these aren’t cheap. We have the Chico key fit infant system
And love it so we were thinking to stay with Chico.

We have a backless booster for my 7.5 year old that we bought this last summer—but right now we only use it in rare occasions when we put our 3rd row up for other people to ride with us. She’s been in it twice.

We actually still have her in her Diono Radian (convertible car seat). She hasn’t outgrown it, so we haven’t had a need to switch her. She’s average height and weight—about 45 lbs now.

@agold: I haven't (I actually don't know how to). Wiggliness was a real concern for us because my daughter definitely is wiggly, so we held off as long as we could. We then had a conversation with her about how important it is for her to sit back and safely and that it's a big kid responsibility, which she does seem to take seriously. And in total transparency, for longer drives, we have her watch cartoons on her iPad that we strap into a holder on the back of the passenger seat so that she's sitting and facing forward rather than reaching for toys, etc. Overall it hasn't been an issue.

@catgirl: thanks for mentioning that, I think the belt geometry will force the issue on buying a new car in a couple years. Why do they get away with making seat belts that can’t even fit an adult properly??

@bhbee: this is true as well. Some belts are not compatible with backless boosters (or even adults). And the belt positioning strap is not always a fix for that issue. So in those cases the choice would be made for you.

Also, when using a backless booster a child needs head support to the tops of their ears. Not all seating positions have that available.

I think your car matters a lot too - how they fit in it. My husband’s sedan has a very supportive back seat and everything fit right and encouraged sitting straight even without the back so we never used the high back. My car is the opposite, belt geometry is not great and I don’t see how they could ever sit in the back row without the high back to position the belt ... I guess the positioner strap on a standard booster would work too but seems more of a hassle!

I just switched my DD, who will be 8 in March, from a 5 point harness to a high back booster about a month ago. I’m planning on keeping her in it with the back for at least another year. She actually likes the back and feels safer with it, she is very concerned that her cousin of the same age uses a backless booster and she doesn’t want him to not be safe :silly: she’s smaller for her age though, 46 inches tall and 49lbs.

@agold: You don't want to lock the belt if a child is using a booster. A locked belt limits torso rotation, which is important in how the body reacts to crash forces. If a child needs the security of a locked belt, they need to be in a harnessed seat.

But a "5 point booster," also called a combinations seat, is not always needed. Many kids can go straight from a forward facing convertible to a booster. Just depends on age, size, and maturity.

My daughter has been in a backed booster since she was 5 and a half, because she didn't fit the convertible seat we had and I didn't want to buy another 5-point seat when we'd switch to a seatbelt anyway. She was mature enough to handle it but not tall enough to sit without the back. She's 7.5 now and we still have her in the backed booster, and I periodically check her height so that the seatbelt isn't cutting into her neck. Once she's tall enough I'll switch her into the backless but there's no rush for us.

I just did a TON of research on this and settled on the BRITAX Grow With You seat. It transitions from harness to seatbelt but not to backless. We have used britax since he was a newborn and I like the clicktight feature and seatbelt install for the harness option. I also liked the high limits for the harness option. My 5 yo really loves his seat and says it’s comfy.
