If you had a c-section for your first kid, and you had a choice for the next one, what did you do and why?

I have 2 friends that had c-sections for the first and elected a c-section for the next one too, but for no particular reason other than it was an option and easy to have a set date. It sounds pretty appealing to not have to labor and just to have a date set. And I've read that scheduled C's are a lot easier than emergency C's after laboring.

On the other hand, it's still a surgery that I'll have to recover from, and this time with a 2.5 year old at home too. And also that it seems typical for milk to be delayed after a C, and mine took a while to come in and get my supply up for my son so I'm a little worried about that.

I have no clue what to do!

If you chose to schedule a repeat c-section, how far along were you when you got to schedule it, and when did you schedule it for?

I was just looking at my calendar for April when this little lady is due and it is already a hot mess. I know a scheduled c-section doesn't mean anything since baby can choose to come earlier, but it sure would feel nice to go ahead and have something on the calendar.

I struggled with high blood pressure throughout my pregnancy. I had pre eclampsia and a hemmhorage with my first baby, so we were on high alert this time. This second baby was also measuring very, very large. The decision was made to do a scheduled c section at 37 weeks. I was worried to have major surgery on top of delivery and worried about taking baby so early. My last pregnancy was an induction/vaginal delivery at almost 41 weeks.

We arrived at the hospital at 730 and surgery was scheduled for 930. All went smoothly and we took care of all the pre-op paperwork, IVs, blood draws, and doc visits.

Around 930, I walked to the operating room. I sat down on the bed to have the spinal placed. I felt a tiny sting where they numb the skin before the actual needle is placed. That was the last thing I felt before my lower half went basically completely numb. I could feel a little skin sensation and pulling/tugging but zero pain.

The surgery got underway and my only negative symptom was on and off nausea. The anesthesiologist did a good job of managing it for me when it got bad.

Baby was born at 10:03 AM weighing 10 lbs, 8 oz, and was 21 inches long. DH got to cut the cord and I got to look at him while I got stiched up. We were in the recovery room snuggling by 11am.

The postpartum recovery has really been a breeze. My bleeding has been lighter than a period since about day 5 and by day 10 I didn't need any pain meds any more. My incision is basically painless at this point.

Mentally, I had three days where I felt really, really bad. Crying, dark thoughts, etc. But I feel better now. I was taking anti depressants before I got pregnant and started them again the day I delivered. I'm glad to have them back again.

I'm so thankful to feel so normal at this point postpartum, because last time it took months. I'm not breastfeeding this time around so having my body back to myself already feels so good.

I found this whole birth experience to be so healing! Who knew?!

I'm having a planned c-section for my 2nd baby next week. My first baby was a vaginal birth and I tore, used all kinds of pads/witch hazel/dermoplast/etc and bled like crazy for 2 months.

What was your vaginal bleeding like after a c section? I'm just trying to get stocked up on necessities.

Hi all!

I hope everyone is doing well!
So a little background this is my second pregnancy and I ended up having an emergency C-section first time around with my son. I labored for 28 hours total and failed to progress past 8cm. His heart rate started dropping so I had to get a C-section. I was fine with it because at that point I just wanted him to be ok! Everything was good and he was born healthy. I however felt like the C-section was hard on me possibly because I was so out of it after being labor so long, lack of sleep, the unknown etc. The shakes on the table were down right scary and no one let me know that would happen. It wasn't until day 3 that I tried to walk and it was miserable. I was afraid to leave the hospital as well. I don't like pain meds so I hated how loopy it made me feel after. I also hated that I couldn't hold my baby right after. My husband and baby left the room right after so I could be stitched up. I had a horrible time trying to go to the bathroom the first time around. I am in overall great health and physical shape so it was really shocking to me how long it took me to recover (I worked out my entire pregnancy.) I felt like I lived on the couch for the first few weeks. Long story short (phew!) I was really hoping for a VBAC this time around and a different birth experience. I really wanted that immediate skin to skin with baby and a quicker healing time as I don't get a ton of time off work and hubby has to go right back to work as well (I will have a bit of help from my mom who watches my son weekly!) My doctor was really supportive of me trying for a VBAC and said I was a great candidate. At the OBGYN firm I go to you do have to fall within a certain percentage for them to allow the doctor perform VBAC. The whole pregnancy I was 65% (which at the firm I go to is the number you have to be at or higher.) Last week at my 32 week appt I fell below that percentage to 61.5% so we decided after careful consideration to schedule the C-section at 39 weeks. Has anyone had a similar situation? I know I won't be in labor for hours on end before this time and I am told its a much easier/enjoyable process. Is this true? What was your experience? Thank you! :)

P.S. as long as baby and I are safe that's really all that matters. I just am a little disappointed that I'll have to go through C-section recovery again especially with a very active 3 year old to take care of as well.

Baby #3 arrived! For my previous csections I was told the earliest I could leave the hospital was 3 days after surgery. This time one of the doctors told me i could leave in 2 days if I want. Althought I don't love being in thehospital I don't feel ready to leave in 2 days and just wondered what other c section moms do

Did you have music during delivery? I'm having my 3rd c-section coming up and my OB has suggested bringing in some music. I'm curious how common this is and whether its really helpful or distracting? I also cant decide on whether I want something calming or something more upbeat

I'm almost 28 weeks pregnant with my second child, and will be delivering via C-section again. I delivered my first daughter via C-section, and it was a nightmarish experience. I had repressed the psychological trauma, but I had a nightmare about it last night that my next birth would be a repeat of the last incident. Natural labor is supposedly very painful, so maybe I don't have the right to complain, but I'm starting to get scared :(

A bit of backstory. . . I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type III, and numbing anesthetic doesn't work so well for many of us. I've known this from many previous dental procedures and discussions about C-sections on EDS support groups. Knowing this, I had talked to my doctor about conscious sedation AFTER they got the baby out because I didn't want to risk harming my baby. I could have pushed for general anesthetic, but that can potentially harm the baby, so that was something I didn't want to do. I had a feeling the spinal anesthetic wouldn't work properly. Unfortunately, I was right. . .

The nurse and the anesthesiologist talked me out of conscious sedation right before the C-section, and said most women want to bond with their babies and be present in the moment. I felt like a horrible person for making such a request, so I just settled for the spinal anesthetic and epidural. If possible I wanted to be mentally there for the birth of my daughter but I was scared the spinal anesthetic wouldn't work.

As they were cutting into me it was clear I wasn't numb enough so they kept bolusing me with more spinal anesthetic to the point that my whole body was shaking because it was dropping my core body temp. At that point it felt like I was being disemboweled. It's hard to describe how painful and terrifying it is to be paralyzed from the waist down and feel the pain of someone pulling out your organs and putting them back.

Unfortunately, they can only give you so much spinal anesthetic before your blood pressure plummets, so they couldn't give me anymore. At least that is sort of what was being communicated to me as I'm frantically flailing my arms and screaming. So they bolused me with more fentanyl and some benzo (maybe midazolam?) through my epidural and that made it a bit easier to endure, but still incredibly painful. My husband ended up blasting my favorite music into my ear at my request so I could zone out a bit (it's my go to when chronic pain is unbearable), but it was still really awful.

They asked me if I wanted to hold my daughter after they cleaned her up, and I couldn't because I was flailing my arms and screaming. After it was all over I was kind of in a state of shock.. Ironically, I think the traumatic incident made it a bit more difficult to bond with my daughter. Recovery was otherwise uneventful except for the fact that they had a hard time controlling my blood pressure (due to pre-eclampsia) and had me on a magnesium drip.

Anyway, my doctor is having me meet with the anesthesiology team for a consult before my next C-section. I guess I'm curious as to what a normal C-section experience is supposed to be like. I've read a few experiences but most don't go into the actual detail of getting cut into and put back together. The epidural was fine and surprisingly hurt much less than many of the hip injections I've had. Recovery was easy compared to my multiple hip surgeries. In fact the nurses commented on how mobile I was right after the procedure XD Mentally I'm okay with every other aspect of a C-section besides the actual procedure. I'm just feeling terrified :(

I posted about this before and was curious if since then any of you have had better results. For my last 2 csections I have been horribly itchy for the 1st 24 hours after the surgery. I was told it's thr morphine that causes it. My OB said I could refuse the morphine but would be in more pain and could opt to try a different pain med in my iv line.
Has anyone tried this,

This will be baby #3, due early Fall. DD will be in 1st grade and DS will be in daycare. My mom will come from out of state to watch the kids during my hospital stay. The issue is with DDs school bus schedule for early morning pick up and after school pick up. I dont think my mother can handle that alone.
Her bus comes very early and combining that with watching DS who will be 2years old at that time is a handful. Additionally she isn't comfortable driving new cars in a new environment so dropping off DS and picking them up is out of the question.
Additionally DS wakes up a lot at night and can be difficult with going back to sleep. For these reasons I feel having DH stay home at night to handle these things will be best.
Having said that, I will miss having him be in the hospital especially for the 1st night after the csection. Have any of you had a similar situation?

Backstory: Had scheduled C-section at 39w 2d due to Large for Gestational Age, started testing positive for proteins, had some extra swelling, polyhydraminos making me measure 5 weeks ahead of schedule, my son's head was measuring 3-4 weeks ahead and would never engage in my pelvis, weekly biophysical profiles from 31w on...Just so many small and kind of big things stacking against me.

This is pretty much my worst nightmare but I have my planned c-section scheduled for Friday morning and I have just come down with a terrible head cold :bummed: This makes me so nervous because I am already somewhat high risk (heart issues) and I just don’t want anymore strikes against me. I am praying my body overcomes it in the next four days but given the fact that pretty much every cold I have had in the last five years has been a long winded affair I am not holding my breath.

I am having a planned c-section in October and I am experiencing so much anxiety about the situation. My 1st c-section was during my first pregnancy and was a semi-emergency when labor lasted too long (2 1/2 days and 2 1/2 hours of pushing) I got exhausted and then my son went into distress. It turns out in the end that he was stuck to the side, sunny side up, and had never properly engaged my cervix which was only half dilated. It was a scary and exhausting experience but at the end of it I was so grateful for medical intervention that potentially saved both of us and ended an ordeal I no longer felt like I had the energy to sustain that I never really stopped to consider how scary the whole thing was or how upset I felt about how things turned out. Now I am in the last trimester of my current pregnancy and am scheduled to undergo my second c-section soon. This time around, however, the ability to contemplate this upcoming event has brought up a lot of unresolved feelings about the last c-section along with a fair amount of fear about having such a major procedure again. Added to that, a huge portion of the reason we are doing a repeat c-section (in addition to my doctor not knowing if I have a big enough pelvis to deliver naturally) is that I have had several instances of my heart going into hours long, unexplained episodes of tachycardia during my pregnancy, which is a scary experience in and of itself. I have been to several doctors and been assured it is nothing life threatening causing these episodes but they make me feel so awful when they happen and they have been unable many times to calm them down that they just add to the level of anxiety I am feeling. So far I have succeeded in putting off my anxiety about the situation figuring that I needed to concentrate on what was in front of me instead of an event several months into the future but the closer it gets the harder time I am having ignoring it. Anyone else have anxiety about having a planned c-section? How did you deal with it? Would so appreciate any words of wisdom or tips anyone has to share. Also not finding much info on preparing for a planned c-section online or from my docs office so those are appreciated as well!

I am curious to hear from women who elected to have a c-section voluntarily.

Personally, I was so against cesarean, but after going through labor and birth I totally understand why any woman might want to forego pushing a baby out!! While I was in labor I remember thinking, "maybe I should just have them take the baby out, this is soo hard!!"

I want to hear from women who did have elective cesareans and hear the different reasons on why you might have chosen it?

After going through birthing a child, I find that I have a more open mind and more respect for each woman choosing what is right for them. So no judgement here whatsoever, this question stems purely from curiosity :) thanks!

I have an RCS on the 26th, but I am hoping and praying that I go into labor on my own and have a successful VBAC before that. If I make it to the pre-op appt on the 23rd, I am going to ask if I can be discharged after 2 nights (if all goes well with me and baby, of course). I wasn't sure how realistic this was.

So late last night I get a phone call from the hospital to get last minute details for my c-section (which is next week to the day). They then proceed to tell me that my co-pay of a two night stay is required up front. I go on to tell them I cannot afford that at this moment and would need to be billed. She goes on to tell me that's what they require and that I will have to talk to the billing department.

This morning I call and again they want me to pay the co-pay ahead of time and when I ask to be billed, I am told that they will require at least half of the payment but she would transfer me to someone else.

So I get transferred and am asked to pay at least half and I said that's not something I can afford YET AGAIN and asked to be billed. She says I'll make a note that you called, which I was getting ready to say that's not going to help but before I could she said they would bill me. Great.

The more I thought about it, I wanted to speak to the financial advisor who sent me a letter MONTHS ago stating what the co-pay would be but never stating that it would have to be paid prior to the surgery. I call and get the same woman and when I ask who my financial advisor are she says she has no way of checking, smuggly says they don't have files but only a computer system and that it would not be in the system. Which honestly, is a bunch of bullshit. After going back and forth with her and what she claims is the hospital policy, (which I had a scheduled induction 3 years ago and this was NEVER the policy then or even the last three times in the pass year when I went to the ER) she asks if I would like to speak to a supervisor. I of course say yes and am now waiting to be called.

Given, I am super happy that I am finally going to be billed but it gets me so mad that they waited until the week before when I already have a million things to worry about and I think of all the firs time parents or patients even who are backed into a corner and think they have to pay on the spot.

End vent! lol I know that was long but I'm sooo annoyed.

ETA: I spoke to the head of the maternity department and was told that the department that called me last night had no right to ask me that and that she would be speaking to them. She said that they have lately been attempting to enforce this policy more but that everyone can be billed and that it should never be a back and forth process. She was super sweet and I really appreciated her kindness.

There's a high chance that this pregnancy is going to end in a scheduled c-section. I still have a long ways to go until the end of this pregnancy, but since it was just brought up at my OB/GYN a few days ago, it's been on my mind.

I'm so clueless about the whole process, so if you mamas who have gone through it would answer these questions for me, that would be great.

1.	How long ago was it?
2.	Was your section planned or unplanned?
3.	What kind of anesthetic is used? Epidural?
4.	What did it feel like when they were doing the procedure?
5.	Did you watch? Did your SO?
6.	What direction is the section scar? (Where is it?)
7.	Who held baby after it came out?
8.	Who cut the cord?
9.	How long after the baby came out did it take for you to be stitched back up again?
10.	When did you get to hold your baby?
11.	How long did it take for your milk to come in?
12.	What kind of pain medication was given to you afterwards…was it ok for breastfeeding? Did it feel like enough?
13.	How long did it take for you to feel like you could easily get around on your own?
14.	What kind of stitches did they use? When did the stitches come out?
15.	How many nights did you have to stay in the hospital after your c-section?
16.	Did your baby room with you your entire stay?
17.	Do you have any ongoing problems from your c-section?
18.	How does your section scar feel now?
19.	Anything you’d like to add?

My first c-section was a regular one but the second time around was ai n a different hospital and they offered me a family centered c-section. This means they dropped the blue drapes so we could see them cut the cord and could see DS immediately after birth, they also allowed immediate skin to skin bonding time.
I'm happy I got to do this and it really improved the birth experience but I wonder why my old hospital didnt offer that. Did your hospital offer this?

Does anyone remember their tummy area being sore for awhile? I'm still pretty sore and tender to touch (not the incision) and I'm not sure if this is normal or something I should talk to my doctor about about. I'm not sore when I am doing normal activities but this pain is only when I put pressure on my belly (above incision and below belly button).

I'm 11 weeks pp today.

I'm pregnant with LO2 and will be having a repeat c-section. I wanted to know from any ladies who have schedule a c-section, how far in advance do you schedule it? Also how early will they do the c-section? Just curious to know how this all works.

I'm being admitted in 1 hour for my repeat c-section and I'm terrified! I had a rough c-section with my daughter and needed a blood transfusion after my uterus refused to shrink. My doctor doesn't belive we'll run into the same complications, but there's always a chance.

Has anyone had a tramatic c-section and gone on to have a normal complication free one? I go in for my surgery in 3 hours and I'd love any positive thoughts and encouragement!

Tomorrow I'll be having a repeat csection, and I'm having a hard time with this since my heart was set on a VBAC. I didn't know until Monday that a csection was definitely in the cards for us, and I keep swinging back and forth on how I feel about it.

On one hand, I trust my OB and his judgement (she's looking big, I'm small). I'm also past my due date and very ready to no longer be pregnant. On the other hand, I'm sad to miss out again on the birthing experience, and knowing if we have a third, that won't even be an option. I'm also worried that she'll end up measuring a normal size, and I'll be filled with regret.

I feel like we're making the best choice with the information in front of us, so I'm trying to block out all the others telling me this is the wrong choice. I'd love to take in positive csection stories and focus on those and the fact I'll have a baby girl in my arms tomorrow morning!

I'm not squeemish about blood or procedures so it doesn't bother me. (If I had a vaginal birth, I considered having a mirror so I could see it... yeah, I know).

Anyway, I did see a video of a vaginal birth in my twin pregnancy class, but never youtubed the c-section procedure.

Well, after commenting on the induction thread and reading my birth an progress thread a year later, it brought everything back. So I just watch a c-section of twins!  Wow! I think it's pretty cool!

were you itchy after your c-section? I've been told theres a combination of the spinal block and pain med that causes the extreme itching in some women. I wanted to know how many of you experienced it? I was horribly itchy especially on my back and legs. This time I am telling them about it in advance and I believe they can cue up some medication in my IV to prevent or atleast reduce it. Did you have this experience

Next month I will have having c-section number 2. Last time was 4 years ago and wasnt planned or scheduled. This time it is scheduled for a few days before my due date. I was told to arrive by noon and the c-section is scheduled for a couple hours after that. I had initially hoped for a morning time slot to limit how long I would be fasting for. If you have an afternoon scheduled c-section did you have to fast from midnight before and how did you cope?
last time my c-section was in the evening and i hadnt been allowed any food from midnight before! I was so hungry :bummed:

If you have had a CS (and will continue with RCS) how many are you and your doctor willing to do? My doctor pretty much said I should stop at 3 based on the amount of scar tissue I had after #2, originally she said no more than 4. What is your doctor's feelings on how many RCSs?

Note: I'm okay with 3 that's the max kids we want anyway so I have no hurt feelings over it & would be getting my tubes tied anyway.
