Thanks ladies, I ended up writing a note. Fingers crossed that this doesn't happen again.

@pachamama: Oh no, poor kid and poor ladies. That's a good reminder for me to be prepared even with older kids now that outdoor activities are starting up again.

So funny, this just happened to my 5-year-old last week. I felt so bad ....who wants to clean up 5-year-old poop?! They were deep in the forest and he couldn't hold it apparently but I should write a note to their teachers. Poor ladies.

DS, a kindergartener, had a messy poop accident yesterday in the bathroom at his elementary age daycare. One of his daycare providers got him cleaned up and changed but I had to leave work to come pick him up. Based on the bag of clothes I was handed (and promptly three away) it was a big mess that included his change of clothes too.

I was apologetic and said thank you but I'm wondering if I should do more. Flowers? A gift card? Or is that weird? I wouldn't have done anything if the accident happened at preschool but I feel like this is outside of expectations for K-5.

I have one in 1st grade and one in pre-k (in a private daycare). The first grader goes to after school at the same daycare where pre-k is. There is a van that drives him there, but it's like a 1 minute ride and I think it's a lot safer than the school bus - less kids, direct ride.

We like this arrangement for a few reasons. Having both kids end up at the same place makes it easier for pick up, also the daycare does care on a lot of the days when the elementary school is closed (like most of winter break except for a couple days of holiday).

Over the summer the daycare does "camp" for school age kids, which we did last summer. I'm not sure if that's what we want to do again this summer or not. But it is a high possibility. So then we just have both kids in one place.

Next year we'll probably use the same daycare for after school even though it's a tiny bit further to drive because we like using them for non-school days and it makes it easy.

Lots of interesting points to consider. I have a DS that will be starting kindergarten in August as well and I was planning to send him to the after school program at his current center where he is attending Pre-K. They offer camps for off weeks and it would mean 1 pick up location for both kids since our 2 year old is already on site.

I had not thought about some of the considerations noted for the after care program at the school. I will have to get more information on how it is set up but may be worth looking into. I attend the afterschool program at my school for a few years before riding the bus home and going to a neighbors house until my Mom got home from work.

If you love the center, my vote it to stay there. Like someone else said, another branch of the same center may not be nearly as good, so I just wouldn’t want to risk it. DH handles the mornings, but has been doing two drop offs for a few years now and it doesn’t seem to be a problem for him.

DS has been going to aftercare at his school since he started in kindergarten. He generally really likes it and has made a wider range of friends, including kids in other grades, than he would have otherwise. Also, different branches of the same center can have significantly different cultures (more turnover, etc). I vote keep the same center and use the school childcare.

I’d also consider how much extra time it is to do two pick up and drop offs. I personally wouldn’t worry so much about the transportation from daycare to school.

I have a 2yo and a grade 2. We live our daycare, so while there like be options for the other one I’d rather drop both boys together. They take DS to the bus stop and pick him up. Then in the summers and breaks they are in the same place and no extra figuring out.

@winter_wonder: I think both situations are workable. They have their pros and cons. I would add the following to your list of considerations:

1) Do on-campus after school care program spots get harder to come by after Kindergarten? Spaces at some of our school's are ridiculously hard to get and priority goes to re-enrolling students, then new Kindergartners, then to not previously enrolled 1st-5th. I thought my school was competitive but in the neighboring district parents literally line up in the middle of the night for spots. I hope it's better other places.

2) As much as I want to believe Covid will be contained by Fall, I would compare how both schools handled childcare during this year to anticipate any closures.

My 2nd grade DD did well with the on campus after school care. This year both my kids are doing virtual school at the day care run by what is usually the after school care. It's working ok and it has a lot of up sides but if I had the option to keep my Kindergarten son in an in person Kindergarten at his preschool/daycare I would have done that in a heart beat.

@bhbee and @sweetcaroline thanks for your responses! Yes, I like the idea of me just dropping her off in the same place so I'm not worried about her traveling. Good point on her wanting to spend more time with friends the the at school program would provide.

I have a Kindergartener and an infant. Infant goes to daycare, Kinder gets dropped off at school at 720am and attends aftercare at her school. I like that because I know where she is all day and I don't have to worry about her traveling. She attends Spanish 2 days per week after school and then goes to aftercare if DH isn't there yet. All this in the same building. The other 3 days she goes straight to aftercare. It is so awesome, the lady that directs the after care program also directs the after school enrichment programs and is the school's science teacher. So my daughter has continuity all day long. She will attend summer camp, either sponsored by her school, the local public school, or the conservation district (wherever we can secure a spot 😬).

I would consider using the school’s care if it has good word of mouth reviews. My oldest used to be jealous of the kids who went to aftercare (as she came home) because they got more time with their school friends and on the playground. Seems like less transitions for her also. There may also be camps you hear about for your older one once school starts - for example, near us a majority of school age kids who need full day for summer go to the catholic school down the street which runs Kidventure camp (non religious) all summer. Just to say, options may open up once you enter a new circle of acquaintances (who probably also need summer care) and she may want to do things with new school friends.

I’m no expert though, in the end I think what is easiest for you is the best and kids will adjust to whatever.

Baby #2 is due in early July and I am trying to figure out logistics for both kids. DD will start kindergarten in August. Her current center does is only for infants-preschool. I love, love her center. Another branch of her center offers infant and before and after school care for older kids. The only drawback is that DD would have to be driven in a van to school by center staff (not crazy about this idea). The other option would be to do at school before and after care provided in the actual school. It follows the school calendar, so only available for 10 months or so of the year. I will need care in the summer for DD, but I could try to find a separate arrangement? If we did the in school care for DD then I would just take baby #2 to DD's old center.

What do you think? Other logistics to consider?

I'm in California and my daughter's preschool decided to go virtual for the first week back, for the entire pre-8 grades. It seems most private schools around me are doing this. The school also finally imposed masks for the younger kids. Funny to ask a 24-month old baby to wear a mask, so good luck with that, teachers. Poor teachers, in general. We haven't had an issue with covid at all in my kid's school since. I'm hoping it doesn't start now.

@JJ2626: I feel you on second guessing yourself. DS started at a new Montessori school today, and all morning I've been beating myself up about sending him, but he has been out of daycare 10 months now and solely at home that whole time, and DH and I are both suffering greatly with trying to WFH full time and keep DS entertained and learning. He is so social and curious and smart, and we just had to weigh every option and try to make the best choice we could, knowing that if covid becomes even worse where we are, we can keep him home again. It's deeply stressful!!!! My mental health is just a wreck after this year...

Ours is closed til Jan 11, we will go back then because there is not much of an alternative. We will be super cautious as long as it is needed, but don't have a childcare alternative to daycare. I know so many people who seem to have just concluded they are over it and are going to go on with things now that 2021 is here as if there is no pandemic. We called MIL 4 times in the past week, and she was at different parties (largely with people in the 70 - 90 age range) all four times. My husband was so pissed, but at some point he has just had to conclude that there is no hope to convince her to be safer, we will not see her until everyone is vaccinated. It is going to be a very rough few months and I just hold my breath that we all make it out okay.

Ugh I’m having the same dilemma. We are lucky that we have childcare anyway, but my daughter loves school and really needs it since she has major social anxiety brought on by Covid. I worry that if she’s out 3 weeks she’ll have a harder time adjusting. Our preschool is forest school, so all outside but the kids aren’t fully masked all the time. (Within the rules here). We’re in a surge but not as bad as other places. Decision making is so hard now! I am constantly second guessing myself.

I kept the kids home today and I'm leaning towards keeping them home all week. Daycare is annoyed and insinuated that we are sick but lying. It makes sense that we're all nervous.

While I assume families are generally trying their best (maybe naively) by closing daycare for two weeks I'm sure it put families in a bind and pushed some into other care situations or to visit family as a means of childcare. I think if they had stayed open I wouldn't be as concerned this week.

@ElbieKay: I showed DH this post while trying to make our decision. He didn't like the statement either and claims I misunderstood. Either way I'll be handling just about all of it but it will be helpful to have him in agreement.

@ElbieKay: Ooh, I would be super pissed about someone sharing photos like that and promoting indoor dining.
My school district has decided that all kids are going back this week to hybrid, instead of remaining remote for 2 weeks like most districts around here. I'm very upset about this and feel like it's just asking for trouble. They are also not requiring/asking families to quarantine if they traveled out of state. I would keep my kids home for at least a week if I could.

Well... it looks like NYC's Thanksgiving surge is only just slowing down now... and it's been more than a month (and, ugh, we'll be lucky if we don't get whammied by a Christmas surge, I can't believe how many people traveled). So a week probably won't make that much difference. It will give you some protection from direct contacts, but there are going to be ripple effects from holiday travel for weeks :(

"DH is willing to let me keep them home for a week if I shoulder all the extra responsibility." This wording makes me sad.

Our preschool required everyone to take a COVID test on or after 12/27 and provide the results before returning to school. I appreciate their effort but I wish they had made the cutoff 12/29 or 12/30. Two days is probably not enough time to get a positive result if a child has been exposed.

I am FB friends with the mom of a kid in our class. She posted all kinds of photos about their Christmas events. They apparently visited family in both Brooklyn and NJ on Christmas day. I was pretty annoyed. She also owns a restaurant and keeps promoting their indoor dining. Ugh ugh ugh.

@erinbaderin: I’m sure more people saw their families. But people who take the rules seriously the rest of the time are more likely to follow quarantine or testing rules about the return to school. Those who don’t take the rules seriously the rest of the time seem even less likely to quarantine or test after the holidays. At least that’s what is playing out in my community.

Slight disagree about people who didn’t follow the rules generally not following the rules, because it was Christmas! Just going from personal experience, we haven’t seen anyone in person since school started in September to minimize our risk as much as possible, but we went to my parents house for Christmas. We quarantined for a week before and asked them to do the same even though they’re in a very low case area, but I actually assume the opposite - a lot of people who’ve been very careful and following the rules got a little tired and a little frustrated and relaxed a little bit to try to make Christmas as normal as possible for their kids.
