I’m looking for a modern baby book that’s easy to fill out, not too time consuming and maybe has prompts and spaces to add keepsakes like hospital bracelets, etc. thank you!

Does anyone use Promtly Journals to document your little ones? I’m considering buying a couple to finally jot down some memories and such for my girls (3 and due in February). Are they worth the cost? In case you aren’t familiar, I’m posting a link below.

How does the amount of snow days you/ your kids have now compare with what you remember from growing up?

I grew up in a similar climate to where I live now (a little less snow but a little less equipped to deal with it, all northeast US). It feels like the number of snow days we have is pretty similar, but I can't remember them canceling school the night before, before it had even started snowing, at all. This winter I feel like every time we have a snow day it's been announced the night before. I'm wondering if they realized how much easier it is on parents and safer it is tokeep people off the roads, or weather predictions have gotten better and more reliable?

But no wearing pajamas backwards and jumping on the bed hoping for a snow day for us!

PHYSICALLY: Not really? I would hug my dad when he got home from work, but it was more me hugging him than the other way around.

EMOTIONALLY: I didn't really hear "I love you" very often either. Maybe after a long trip away, or if I was sick or something.

OVERALL: Despite both of the above, I never doubted that my parents loved me! I don't know how I knew that they loved me, but I did feel loved growing up. I also think that "back in the day," the norm was that parents weren't all that physically or emotionally affectionate? So it was pretty common for hugs and kisses and "I love yous" to be infrequent!

Growing up, were your parents affectionate with you?

I was shocked by this statistic!

<< The happiest memory of 49 percent of the British people surveyed was on vacation with family. A third said they can still vividly remember family vacations from their childhood. What’s more, a quarter brought up these memories to get them through tough times. “We consider these to be a ‘happiness anchor’ – reflecting on our happiest memories of joyful time spent together as a family can be extremely powerful in bringing relief and respite when faced with the darker times that life can bring,” John McDonald, director of the Family Holiday Association, told the Huffington Post. >>

http://www.smartparenting.com.ph/life/travel/5-reasons-why-we-should-go-on-more-family-vacations-a1162-20170207

I hated family vacations growing up, as everyone fought and we would drive in a station wagon with no air-conditioning! My happiest memories are all of eating food at home haha.

Today we have a snow day so we mainly played inside and the movies are rolling! We may go out to "shovel" when DS2 wakes up from his nap.

When you were a kid and had a snow day, what types of things would you do? In high school, I definitely remember turning off my alarm and having my mom wake me up as needed so I could sleep in. I also remember when I was younger the neighborhood kids would all go sledding and play in the snow.

I was amazed that my son's Kindergarten teacher went by her first name with her students! Sometimes the kids called her Miss Firstname, but mostly they used her first name. That was really common in my area; all the teachers went by their first name.

I guess it's not a huge deal in today's society, but when I was growing up our teachers were on a completely different level. I called my teachers Mr. Tozzi or Mrs. Ilgner, and they were adults. I called my piano teacher Mrs. Lee, and even today when I visit her I have trouble calling her by her first name! But things have definitely changed because I taught at university one year, and the students all called me by my first name. I thought that maybe they were going to call me Professor Bee haha!

.... complete the sentence above.

Do you have specific routines that you wish your child would always remember even when they are 40 years old? Do you have any good memories from your childhood yourself and how would you complete the sentence? It doesn't have to be super special, just a certain routine that they/we'd probably remember for life.

For me, when I was a child, my dad used to take me to the playground every saturday morning when my mom slept in :-) One day it just seem to have abruptly stopped. We never really talked about why but I was always sad about it. Maybe I was too old for the playground.

For my DS, I take him to food truck wednesdays whenever we could at a nearby park for dinner. We lay down a picnic blanket under a big tree, we'd buy food, eat and take selfies laying on the blanket. He sometimes play with his balanced bike or scooter, or run around in the park. That is one of the moments I hope he'd always remember when grows up :)

So we were latch key kids starting from then, which was pretty great for my independence.

The "I'm so old..." post made me think of all these things. Do you remember where you were when some of the major news stories of the past few decades happened?

The Challenger explosion - 1st grade. I vividly remember my teacher's face when she rushed out of her chair (which was a feat, as she was "really old," ie probably 60, ha!) to turn off the tv!

The OJ verdict - the nurse's office at the elementary school. I was in high school but volunteering as an elementary school teacher's aide.

9/11 - College (2nd senior year). I'd just gotten out of the shower and was standing in our living room in nothing but a towel when the 2nd plane hit the South Tower

Barack Obama's inauguration - At work. I watched it in spurts in the family lounge on my floor at the hospital.

Columbine - College (junior year).

Bush/Gore election - College (1st senior year). I remember having an argument about it with my college roommate after we stayed up late watching the results.

Other major events that happened but I don't know where I was - Rodney King, USSR disbanded, Berlin Wall falls, OK City bombing...

My LO gets presents from pretty much everyone who knows her on every single holiday. In particular, her grandparents, my brother, and my SIL all LOVE to buy her stuff. They refuse to give us money for college so we just accumulate toys and clothes like crazy.

In contrast, I only received presents from my parents for birthdays and holidays. My grandparents would occasionally put some money in a card, but that was it. I never received anything from an aunt or uncle.

Did you have to make a leprechaun trap when you were in school? Do kids these days still make them?

Anyway, what was the best trap you made or saw?

I honestly can't remember mine.

I would dream of buying video games, model rockets and RC cars. I actually only ever bought one model rocket but I must've read that Estes model rocket catalog thousands of times, dreaming about buying one of their model rockets!

In the end though, those items were all out of my budget. So mostly I just bought secondhand paperback books that I couldn't find at the library. That said, I think dreaming of those purchases helped me adopt a saving mindset!

My mom sang and sometimes played James Taylor "You Can Close Your Eyes" when I was really young. I sing it to my kids while I rock them to sleep! It's one of my favorites.

What songs did your parents sing or play for you? Do you sing them to your LO?

Was just reading this beautiful remembrance of the apartments where the author grew up:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/23/nyregion/metropolitan-diary-putting-the-old-apartments-behind-her.html

My parents just sold our childhood home last year! I hadn't visited the area in years, and now I regret not walking through one last time. Although after reading that article, maybe it was for the best.

In kindergarten and first grade, we had birthday parties on our birthdays at school. For mine, my mom brought in homemade cupcakes and my teacher laid me over her lap and spanked me 5 times - for my age.

Can you imagine today? Not only are homemade baked goods banned, spanking would get the teacher jail time!

Share yours!

Some of my students were asking me today, and I have been going down nostalgia lane--what were the "hot" books of your school?

Off the top of my head, I'm remembering Tiger Eyes, Goodnight, Gracie and this "Couples" series that my older sister had that I devoured.
