Any tips for helping baby get in a better position and engage?

Backstory.....I'm pretty sure my labor stalled last night. They sent me home from L&D when I went in. I was having consistent contractions close together and in a good pattern and painful to the point I could barely talk through them and I would shake...but unfortunately I would not progress with in the hour or so and I never dilated. They just said try to sleep and tomorrow try to walk a lot and see if they intensity or start back up if they stop. The nurse literally shrugged and honestly didn't have an answer when it came to why I wasn't dilating. They finally stopped about 2am last night. She was head down but now has moved to and her head is in my right hip. She does that a lot!!!! I think the reason I didn't progress and my labor stalled is because she is in a bad position (almost sideways) and will it not engage. I have an Induction day so honestly I'm okay with waiting but I don't want to have stalled labor on and off for the next 11 days. That sounds no fun.

Ladies who were induced and also have gone into labor themselves

Did going onnyour own not hurt as much in the early labor stages? I was induced both time and i just remember waking up and it was extremely painful but by morning was only a 3. I was not given pitocin till after my epidural. I have a high pain tolerance though so I was kinda surprised my early contractions hurts so much and I wasnt in transition or even ton a 4 or 5 by morning. When you ladies went on your own did it hurt less or just about the same.

I’m sitting here at my desk at work and I’ve had 8 Braxton Hicks contractions in the past hour. (I started noticing them more frequently yesterday so I got a timer). I’m 33 weeks.

I’m not in any pain but wondering if this is normal. Yesterday I felt really off like I was getting the flu but today I’m feeling fine.

Anyone have any input ?

Old wives tale that labor is half as long after your first. Any truth to this? How long was your first compared to second/third/etc.?

My insurance company has been calling to check in. I finally answered yesterday and, among other things, she said to go to the hospital at 5-1-1. I thought it was 3-1-1 and she also said second (or more) babies tend to come quicker. I want to labor at home as long as possible. But obviously within reason!

I went 3.5 weeks early with my son- no labor, just a very slow water breakage (pPROM technically). Labor was induced with Cervadil then lightning fast. So he was borderline premature. We got lucky as he is perfectly healthy. But I'm a little worried about #2 I have due in January...
If you gave birth around a month early, was your next one earlier, the same or later (full term)?

labor with my first started with my water breaking overnight, i went into the hospital and was induced, so all of my contractions were the result of medical intervention.

now i'm counting down the days (4!) until my due date and wondering how labor will start this time. my doctor said there's no reason to think my labor will start with my water breaking a second time, but curious on folks' anecdotal experiences. has anyone had subsequent pregnancies begin with water breaking? or is it far more likely that i'll have contractions first this time?

curious about all experiences but just asking about second pregnancies in the poll to avoid over-complicating.

My bump app (the height of scientific integrity :silly: ) claims that only 10% of births have the water break on its own. That seems super low to me so I thought I would take a poll

Mine broke both times at home - basically marking the change from early to active labor. First time was a huge gush, second was a series of them.

Recently someone told me that in their experience, contractions after your water breaks are way worse than contractions before your water breaks.
I wouldn't know, because both times my water has been broken from the very start of labor. And I will say all my contractions hurt horribly.

What was your experience?

Also... "water breaking" is such a weird phrase. But "amniotic sac rupturing" just sounds so medical.....

I'm 41 weeks on Monday. Seriously so over this pregnancy..

For some history, I was induced with my first at 41+1 and over 24 hours later it led to csec. This was 5.5 years ago. My second came at 38 weeks...labor was super fast. Like contractions to baby being in my arms in 3 hours. This was 2 years ago.

Now with my 3rd, we were sort of expecting a fast delivery. Everyone and their mom told me their story of the 3rd child coming fast, etc so we've been actively waiting since like 37 weeks. I have been pregnant FOREVER! Because of my previous csec, I cannot be induced so the doctor wants me to wait as long as I can before another repeat surgery. She's confident that bc I had a med free vbac 2 years earlier, I can have still have a natural birth. She's willing to let me go to close to 42 weeks.

We have tried everything!! spicy food, mexican food, acupuncture, bouncing on yoga ball, walks, pineapple, clary sage essential oils, pineapple, nipple stimulation, membrane sweep twice, etc. My husband I even did BD twice. There's a local eggplant Parmesan dish that's famous for inducing labor and we even made a trek out there to eat it. Nothing is working, I'm still pregnant and miserable.

Last Thursday, I was 3.5 cm dilated, 80% effaced, and having minor contractions according to NST. These numbers sound promising but it's been like that for awhile.

No real question. Anyone have similar stories?

What personally helped you during (hospital) labor, besides an epidural? I had a pretty bad experience the first time around and I hope I can have an epidural this time, but there's a chance I might not get one..... so what helped you manage the pain and stay *calm*?

For me: DH & Mom rubbing my lower back and applying counter pressure, the hot shower, hot compresses, kind of the birth ball but ehhh; during pushing I envisioned him coming out and it was motivational

Not sure if that’s what happening or if it’s just urine leakage. Twice this afternoon/evening I’ve had liquid suddenly leak, but not a ton. This hasn’t happened at all in this pregnancy until today. I’ve been peeing a lot but not leaking unless I cough, sneeze or laugh- none of which I was doing when this happened today. I’ve also had a lot more Braxton Hicks than usual today. Anyway, if your water broke slowly, please tell me about it!

So I am 33 weeks and I don't really know what contractions feel like because when I had LO1, I just felt like I was in pain the whole time, no starting no stopping. I didn't know if I had BH contractions because I was huge towards the end and everything felt "tight" (the main descriptor I read about BH).

But basically, I am a teacher, so I am on my feet most of the day, and sometimes I feel like I am out of breath or forgetting to breath deeply. It's hard to do so unless I'm sitting down. Yes, my belly feels tight... it usually does. Does this sound like BH?

ETA: There's no pain involved at all. I also don't notice a starting and stopping. Then again, I'm pretty busy with 30+ students all day long...

Responses don’t really matter, I’m just gonna go to the hospital when my FIL gets here to watch the kids. But indulge me till then!

I’ve had diarrhea for the last two hours. My stomach feels hard intermittently but I can never tell if that is a contraction or the baby pushing its back against my stomach. My back (lower to below shoulders) hurts and gets worse periodically. I’m nauseous but no vomiting.

L&D said it sounded like a stomach bug and to come in if I can’t keep down fluids or if it gets worse. I’m gonna go in anyway unless I feel better in an hour when my FIL gets here. Baby is moving a ton and everything looked normal at my NST/BPP yesterday. I’m 36w3d.

I'm 99.9% sure I'm not actually in labor but I'm 37 weeks along and have had around 30 bh contractions in the last 3 hours. I am extremely well hydrated so I'm not concerned and therefore haven't bothered calling but I'm just curious if anyone went from lots of them to actual real contractions. With my first I started immediately with strong contractions and hit transition within 45 minutes so this is super different.

I'm having contractions approx 12 min apart, each lasting about 1:30. I can breathe through them, but they have period like cramps with them and I'm having some weird butt pressure feeling as well.

At what point do I call the doc? I feel like they're going to tell me to go in no matter what I say, so I want to make sure this is actually happening. My csection is Wednesday morning, so not that far away!

Also, I haven't felt a pop and there really hasn't been anything after this (but it's only been a few minutes).

Could this be my water breaking? Or just discharge.

I was told at my anatomy scan that I have an anterior placenta this pregnancy. I didn't have this last pregnancy. To be honest, it hasn't felt too much different (other than the kicks being a little more muted than last time) up to this point. But I'm concerned for labor. Is it going to be much different?
So if yo had an anterior placenta for one pregnancy and not for another, my question is, was labor more focused in the back with your anterior placenta? Did the contractions feel different from a previous or other pregnancy?

With my first, my water broke, then pretty soon afterwards I started getting painful contractions 5 min apart. It was super obvious that I was in labor so we went to the hospital and LO was born 7 hrs later.

Now that I'm 37 weeks along with #2, I'm nervous that I'm not going to realize I'm in labor unless my water breaks again. I feel like a first timer all over again. My OB said labor could go much faster this time though so that makes me anxious.

Tell me...how did you know you were in labor? Was it obvious?

For those who've already given birth, how long were you in early labour/laboured at home before going to the hospital, with your first child? I know the general "rules" about when to go to the hospital, but curious to hear personal experiences in terms of how many hours specifically you were at home before deciding it was time.

And also, for those who got an epidural - how long did you wait until asking for it/getting it? As soon as things started to pick up, or did you wait until the pain got unbearable? My doc told me there will be plenty of time for that since it's my first, but I'm nervous about missing that window or getting there too late!

I woke up last night with what seemed like a stomach bug or food poisoning. Doing a little better this AM; no contractions other than the BH I've been having for months now.

I'm only 35.5 weeks, but DD1 came just before 37 weeks, so I'm starting to get paranoid that this could be my body getting ready for labor!

Did you experience GI-bug like symptoms as an early sign of impending labor?

I read somewhere that anterior placentas can lead to "sunny side up"/posterior position babies and difficult labours, and I'm not really sure of the validity of it, and I can't remember where I originally read it!

So, I'm curious... how did your labour go if you had an anterior placenta?
