While I'm also a fan of a backpack for running after a toddler, I get it if you really don't like the feel of a backpack.

I would get the large. It's a much more useful size and if these bags really hold up, you'll be able to use it for travel and other stuff after you've moved on from needing a diaper bag. I read "big enough to hold at 13" laptop" and thought that was a good sign!

In the early days, I had a changing pad, wipes, butt cream, disposable diaper bags, a bottle of gas drops, a bottle of tylenol (he started teething at 3 months), at least 2 changes of clothes, a warmer layer, a hat (sun or warm), burp rags (at least 2), a muslin or two to serve as nursing cover as well as place to put baby, paci/wub-a-nub, a toy that made noise/played music (worked miracles during vaccinations and car sides), granola bar and water bottle for me (nursing), a change of shirt for me, plus I put my wallet, phone, and keys in there so I didn't have to carry a purse.

All of my stuff fit into a smaller bag, but finding it all quickly was a PITA. The backpack bag I switched to isn't that much bigger, but the opening and organization is far easier to navigate.
I also used multi-sized zipper pouches inside my bag to stay organized and keep the clothes clean.

FWIW, I didn’t get a “backpack” style diaper bag until kid #4 (all of mine are 5 and under so they ALL have stuff in there!) and I managed just fine, so I don’t think it’s a MUST for one baby.

I think you’d be ok with the smaller one. Second the suggestion of carrying burp rags and a swaddle blanket. I also like to have room for my ring sling. If you had all day outings you’ll eventually need room for jacket, snacks, sippy cup, etc. as she gets a little older. Don’t forget your stuff too (water bottle, wallet, keys, sunglasses) unless you want to carry two bags :)

If you want go check out other brands (like the Lily Jades posted above) I have a Mina Baie and I really like it!

Honestly it doesn’t matter what size of bag I carry, I always have it packed to the max 🤣

@MrsJBeeG: So, I use a diaper bag that is crossbody, shoulder, and backpack. It doesnt look like a backpack, but it has the d rings in the back to convert. I am normally not a backpack person either, but its SO nice when you are at a park etc for running after a toddler. Just my two cents.

@crazydoglady: it doesn’t. It does turn into a cross body. I’m just not into backpacks at all so I’ve shied away from one (Dagne makes a backpack diaper bag too) even if it is handier like you and @josina: have suggested.

@Ms. RV: I’m already 42 so the odds of having a second are slim in my opinion . I’m in the “one and done” camp now as our little girl is so wanted but unexpected as I’d just about given up on kids give our losses and my age. My DH would love to have another if we could get lucky (ie a good egg as I don’t have trouble getting pregnant) again.

So realistically i don’t think we will have another’s maybe I can get the smaller. I’ll check the dimensions compared to yours!

Are you planning on having any more kids while still needing a diaper bag for your first? If so, probably get the large. If not, you can probably get away with the small. FWIW, I have two under two and my diaper bag is 14.5x13x5.5 and everything fits well.

I'd actually recommend the diaper bag backpack instead - so much easier to be hands free and you'd probably use it much longer.

Other item's i'd throw in a diaper bag - receiving blanket either for extra warmth or as a burb rag, sanitizer, and a few toys/rattles if baby gets fussy. A nursing cover if you will be nursing. A changing pad if one isn't included. Diaper bags for disposal. Eventually snacks.

Good morning ladies!

I am looking for opinions! I’ll be a FTM in June (so excited even with the anxiety of this pandemic). I’ve decided on a diaper bag - want the Dagne Dover Wade diaper bag. I’ve carried a Dagne Dover work back for two years - really put it through the wringer and it still looks brand new. So I believe in the brand. And I’m wanting it in black as I tend to prefer simple black to go with more and also as my DH will be open to carrying it if need be if it’s in black.

But I can’t decide on the size to get. Instinctively want to get the small because it already seems large (likely smaller than my everyday work bag to be honest) but since my mother in law generously wants to get it for me - I don’t want to get one that’s too small that makes me wish I’d picked out the larger one. Online reviews suggest the small is better for a toddler when you carry less. I don’t want to carry more than I need but don’t want to get the wrong sized bag if possible.

Which also made me realize - what do you put in the diaper bag for a newborn/ young baby? I’m tracking diaper wipes, diapers, bottle, change of clothes, ointment, pacifier (if used). Anything else I should consider including?

I’ve added a link to the two sized bags and would appreciate votes and opinions.

@bees_knees: I only used the insert with certain bags depending on how much I was going to pack. The insert is nice and has SO many pockets, but feels super stuffed and crammed when you fill it up. It's really difficult to get in and out of Shaylee when it's packed. With my Cailin (and when I had Lorie,) I put some things in the insert, and then put pouches in the middle of the insert.
Now, I'm not saying people necessarily like the pockets on Shaylee that much better (they are much improved after switching from zippers to magnets,) but the ones on Meggan (the side ones especially) add so much weight/bulk and don't really add functionality. But many people LOVE Meggan.
I would suggest joining the BST and watching as many youtube comparison videos as you can.

@crazydoglady: this is very helpful! Do you use the organizer insert at all? I don’t know if I’d use that or just some packing cubes (or both). I’m actually a fairly light packer, but I can see how the Meggan would get to be a black hole! I mostly wanted the option of throwing a carrier or coats on top of everything if I needed too, so it might still be a good option. The Meggan outside buckle pockets look so much more functional than the Shaylee’s, so I’m glad you said that! I’ll check out the BST group too, thanks!

I could write a novel, so I am going to try to keep this as brief as possible.
Ok, so I have had 5 or six different LJ styles and can say that 30% is a big deal. I anticipate that Black Friday won't be as good.
However...if you are at all interested in buying a used, but great condition bag (or you just want to ask LJ experts any questions,) join the facebook Lily Jade BST group. Prices on previously owned bags are at an all-time LOW because LJ is doing such great sales. There are 9k members, so the Shaylee vs Meggan debate has been talked about a lot.
Between the two bags (I haven't had a Meggan but my friend has one) Shaylee is really great if you have 1 kid or one much older kid and a toddler. It was awesome when I just had my son, but once baby girl came along and he was potty-training, it didn't work. Meggan is great with space but is so heavy and many complain that the pockets with the buckles are virtually useless. They also say it is a black hole. If you need more space, I would try a Jennifer. It's larger than Meggan, has more horizontal packing vs vertical, and is lighter. I've had a Shaylee, Lori, Cailin, Brittany, and Danielle. I currently have the Cailin (I never thought I would want a nylon bag but her bottle pockets are amazing and she's so light. I've sold all the others. I also have a Frankie Lou Joann.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I have been eyeing a Lily Jade diaper bag because 😍😍😍...I was planning on waiting until Black Friday, assuming they’d have a good sale, but they’re having 30% of site wide right now  Anyone know how their Black Friday sale last year compares to this?!

Also if anyone has any input on a Meggan vs a Shaylee?....I’m going to have 4 kids 5 and under so I need the space, but I’m scared the Meggan will be huuuuge.

I have a couple from Freshly Picked and love them! I actually use one for work/not as a diaper bag since it looks so nice. They’ve held up amazingly too.

I had a diaper bag from this line. I don't hear much about this brand; I just stumbled across it in a small local store. I don't see the exact style I had, but it has held up very well, and is super lightweight. (ETA: it was from their Green Label collection. I think that particular fabric helped with the weight.)

https://www.lassigusa.com/products/mom-dad/diaper-bags

I saw all the recommendations for backpack-style bags when I was pregnant, but I had to remember that I am just not a backpack person. I never use backpack-style purses, and just find them inconvenient and frustrating. So think about what kid of bags work for you already in your everyday life, and look for those qualities in a diaper bag.
