Just wanted to update and say that switching to our cloth stash has been awesome! We still use overnight disposables for bedtime, and we take disposables if we're out of town, but overall it's been almost seamless.
LO didn't care about the new bulk, she naps just as well wearing them, and I am STILL using our disposable stash from before I made this post (and we've gone out of town for the weekend three times). It's been really easy to integrate the washing into our routine and her daycare nanny hasn't had any problems. Thanks for the encouragement to just go for it :)

I acquired a stash with #1 and used it almost exclusively after a couple weeks. With #2, I honestly don’t remember. I know I used cloth, but not how often. Now with #3, we use cloth at home and disposables at night or if we will be out awhile. I feel like the more use cloth diapers get, the better I’m doing for the environment, particularly since I already have them. So I’m fairly committed. I did get a ton of diapers for my shower do #3, so I didn’t start using them until 2 months (and now using the stash for night times and trips).

Number one was in cloth most of the time. Number two we went back and forth for various reasons, but I always felt guilty about the money wasted on disposables. Plus cloth is so cute.

In my house, I had to put the disposables in a closet to only get out at night, otherwise my husband would automatically use those. So I guess I'm saying to take some action toward making the cloth your norm?

Just commiseration from me. I'm in the same boat. I have a beautiful stash from my first and even bought a couple new ones. We clothed for 2 weeks when he started to fit and then went on vacation and bought hello bello disposables, they're cute and soft and so dang easy. My stash is still in the closet. I feel like I should use them but I just ordered another box of hello Bello instead 🤷

We might go back once he's older and doesn't use so many diapers in a day. And honestly I found ebf poop worse because we have an he washer and I had to spray them off anyway

We cloth diapered starting at 3 months. We moved when DD was 8 months (cross country in temporary housing) so we did disposables for 4 months. We put her back in them when she was 12 months. And we were so happy to put her back in! They are way cuter, have had NO BLOWOUTS, and the amount of money saved is amazing.
We've been back in cloth for 18 months, and are just on the edge of potty training... and I'm already missing it!
So that my little anecdote about putting your child in cloth at a little later age.

I think you may be psycing yourself out about it. Cloth is a bit more work, but once it is part of your laundry cycle it really isn't a chore. Start slowly, maybe decide to cloth during the day on the weekends. Once you are back into the swing, it will be easy to eventually be wholly cloth again.

And if you try and don't like it... who cares!

I'd start using some cloth diapers and see how you feel about it. I had plans to only use cloth diapers for our daughter, but we bought the one size, not the newborn ones, so we had to wait for her to grow into them while using newborn disposables.

They fit her better now, but are still so bulky and dont fit well under a lot of her clothes. We basically only use cloth diapers when we are hanging around the house, but when we go out and for overnight we stick with disposables. I still like using them around the house though as I can tell it makes a difference with how many disposables we need to order every month.

I have a friend who started when her kid was older, like 1. I can't stand the disposable culture so I'd just start now and keep your disposables for back up. As long as you can stay on top of the wash it's not hard at all.

Cloth diapering doesn't need to be all or nothing!
We used paper at night and when we were going out for the day. But if we were just hanging around the house or staying really local we would use cloth.

So I have a great stash of cloth diapers and gear, mostly saved from my first DD1 and some given to us by generous neighbors who are done having kids. I 100% thought we would cloth diaper our newest LO since we had everything and it went fine last time.

But, then we just didn't for whatever reason. I chalk it up to a combination of waiting for DD2 to grow into them, then wanting to use up our disposable stash, and now just being lazy about it. There is also a part of me that worries DD2 will not be used to them or be uncomfortable with the bulk.

So, I'm now at the point where I feel like we either need to double-down and actually do cloth diapers OR sell our stash and the related accessories we have for it. DD2 is 8 months old and I WOH full time while DH works part-time for now but may be returning to a full-time WOH position within the next couple weeks.

What would you do? (Poll for funsies)

My washer has a prewash button and slot for soap. Sometimes I use that, sometimes I just do a quick wash cycle first before the regular wash and extra rinse. I don't think just a rinse cycle on my washer has enough water to do the job.

Don't be afraid it mess around with it. You'll be able to smell if they aren't clean. Sometimes if my liners or covers still smell but everything else is fine, I throw those back in for a quick wash with some oxiclean and that does the job.

@mediagirl- I currently cloth diaper my daughter and my routine is this-

Wash on cold with arm and hammer sensitive and oxiclean
Do an extra rinse after it is done just to make sure all the soap is gone.
Throw in dryer

@mediagirl: your first wash is getting all the yuckies out, so feces and pee residue. The second wash actually gets them clean. You don't want to put them back on your kid when they've been agitating in dirty water

@jennlin821: I got some Charlie Banana's off a craigslist post and I'm pretty happy with them so far, thanks for the recommendation! I'm researching how to wash diapers on Fluff Love and don't understand pre wash and main wash. It says to put a certain amount of detergent in during prewash and another amount in during main wash. I don't get it. I have a front loader and have no idea how to separate the detergents (even after looking at the washing machine index info). Do you run one wash as prewash then have to turn the washer on again for a main wash? I feel ridiculous asking this but it just isn't clicking with me.

ETA: figured out the prewash thing by searching the facebook group. They suggest doing two loads every wash - seems so excessive!!

@foodiebee: I did not see a significant increase in utility bills when I was doing cloth laundry vs now when I'm not. I would skip the portable washer, I just can't imagine that having enough agitation to get your diapers properly clean. If you have an he it is only using the water you need so shouldn't be tons extra.

I would also plan to use tide or a similar mainstream detergent to wash your diapers. I've tried to make seventh generation work and it just doesn't get them as clean with the natural surfactants. I also do a bleach wash on my inserts (and my covers when needed) about every 6 weeks just to keep any yuckies from building up. Fluff love will tell you if your wash routine is good you won't get buildup but I haven't found that to be the case, no matter what I try they get a bit musty after awhile

I already have a sprayer from my first so we will likely spray ebf poop just to keep staining down but not necessary until baby is eating solids (but if you're buying one anyway buy it early. It makes things so much easier!)

@foodiebee: I have HE machines. I don't pay my water, but I only do two loads a week. I do double cycle (quick wash followed by hot and heavy). I line dry outside 9 months a year. That really helps. I also use prefolds instead of microfiber inserts and find they dry better and clean easier

@pachamama: just use the flour sack towels. If you're going to buy anything, I'd get some used green mountain diapers prefolds. We used the newborn until 13 pounds and you could probably make the yellow size fit now to get more use out of them. I stuff my pockets with the outgrown ones.

@foodiebee: right! when EBF it's all water soluble so no need for a sprayer. I put off getting a sprayer until 12 months and used liners until then, but I like my sprayer so much I wish I had gotten it around 6 months. Either way, you don't need it right away.

I had two kids with crazy loose stools... Definitely the driving force in potty training early.

I took a yard of micro fleece (not polar fleece- it has to be micro) and cut them down to liner size. We laid that over the prefold. I've always just used a newspaper fold (fold in thirds then fold down the front a bit to fit in the diaper) with a prefold in a cover. So layer everything into the cover- prefold+ like then snap it on like any other diaper.

The liners caught most of the poop. If it was a trickle I could just change the liner and not the whole diaper. If it was a lot I would dunk the liner in the toilet and then throw it in with the diapers. The liners never stained because they are fleece!

I was just jumping over here to ask if we needed a sprayer if we're planning to EBF, but it looks like the answer is no, correct? Is that until it gets more solid (we're planning to EBF until 6 months, then gradually begin Baby-Led Solids)?

We use Seventh Generation for our HE front-loader. Looks like I still have lots of research to do! Need to check out Fluff Love U from the sound of it.

We use Viva paper towels (VERY soft, cloth feeling) as disposable liners, which might take care of the "poop" factor for you. We keep a container of grocery store plastic bags on the diaper table, and when there's poop, we pick up the poopy liner using the plastic bag around our hands - like I imagine dog owners do for their dogs? Then I throw it away in our diaper genie, and the diaper goes in the wet bag to be washed later. IF it's a really messy diaper, I wipe it down with wipes, too.

@mediagirl: We use Persil and they even have a 'odor' version of Persil now. It works great and doesn't have an overwhelming smell!

My tips for newborn poop is to accept every cover may need to be washed.

What I did for R is use a trifold of a prefold or towel inside a cover. I would use pockets like a cover until the poop got a little less frequent. We totally kept it as simple as possible because I was overwhelmed. This is the fold I used: http://www.zephyrhillblog.com/2013/01/using-flat-diapers-for-a-newborn/

I found that as long as all of the cloth was inside of the cover we were good to go. There wouldn't be blow outs.

I started using my Alvas around 11 lbs. But R has skinny legs. Poop would slide out the leg holes.

For the stains, don't worry! EBF often stains, but that doesn't mean they are not clean. You can stick them in the sun, and the stains fade away. (I swear!)
