This summer my kids will be 10 and 8. This is the first summer they'll be occupying themselves for quite a bit (excluding the summer of 2020). DH will be working from home and I will be splitting time between home and office.

DH wants a no-screen time rule for weekdays during the summer and only fruit and veggie snacks. I'm looking to build some more flexible guidelines that allows screentime after some other pursuits (reading, chores, playing outside)... and while I try to push healthier foods I don't want the healthy food thing to completely backfire on us.

Have you set up any systems or rules that helped guide your older kids to make healthy choices during the summer?

Our oldest daughter (late September birthday) will be entering kindergarten at public school this fall. Anyone else have children entering K this year?

We have kindergarten screening in May. Any idea what to expect?

My eldest is turning five in the fall, and will be entering kindergarten in September. She currently attends an outdoor based preschool, and will be entering public school for K.

As a family, we mask in public indoor spaces (grocery store, doctors, Gymboree, etc.), but our daughter does not mask for preschool because she is outside 90 percent of the time.

Obviously, this won’t be the case in kindergarten. I would like her to try to wear a mask at school next year. I am concerned she is going to bring back COVID to our elderly parents.

Does anyone have children in early elementary this year who sent them to school in a mask? How did they manage it? Was it a problem if they were the only one masked?

(Not looking for a debate on masks, or to shame anyone who are making different decisions)

My kiddo had his first grade open house tonight. It’s a new school for him, and despite knowing a couple friends who were starting here as well, there’s no one he knows in his class. :/ Let’s just say our whole family was feeling a little less than excited after the event. Please tell me this is normal and that he will get more comfortable. :( It was a lot.

Just when I thought I had completed ALL THE FORMS we got the first day of school forms from the classroom teachers. I like them in theory but I'm tired of forms and I'm always stumped by "The 5 things I wish/hope/dream for my child" and "the 5 things I fear for my child."

So far I have essentially the following:

Hope: A 'regular' in-person school year & meeting or exceeding academic standards.

Fear: Eating tree nuts (allergen doc on file)

I feel like a crappy parent for not having ten inspiring things to write down. What would you put for your grade schooler?

I discovered a gap in my 9 year old's knowledge today that surprised me. After going away to sleep away camp for 12 days I've been trying to increase her independence and let her try more new tasks. Today when I dropped her off at summer camp I asked if she wanted to dial in to my conference call for me. (Darn 9am meetings and 9am drop off). Usually I click a link on my work phone but that's MIA so I went old school dialing. I handed her the number and my phone with the dial pad screen up. She just looked at it and back at me. Then she asked "what do you mean 'dial a number'?" OMG, I had no idea she had no clue how to dial a phone (skipping the fact that it's called dialing). She has DH's number memorized and she can press the 'Emergency Call' button on my phone but I guess I've never demonstrated punching in the numbers because everything is in contacts or a link these days.

Have you discovered any funny gaps in your kids' knowledge?

DD came home today upset that someone in her grade made a TikTok of her revealing her crush. I knew this was coming but this is 3rd grade!

I downloaded the app and couldn't find anything so I told DD the kids were probably making it up. Unfortunately I found out after bedtime that the video is real. Another parent found the profile by asking a youngin for help. Her school name is in the profile name and there's a series of 'guess who in my school' videos. The video has the first letter of her name, her teacher's name, a cartoon gif of a redhead (like her) with an exaggerated butt twerking and 'annoying' written largely, along with 'likes Sam but says she doesn't'. The song is inappropriate and the actual video just points at the ceiling. I shouldn't have looked at the comments but I was relieved to see they all essentially said 3rd graders shouldn't be on TikTok.

I don't know what to say to DD. She was upset enough just thinking her (not?) crush was named. She'd be devastated to see the other images. I hope she doesn't come across the video. I'm almost certain this was made by the girl that has been making her life hell in person for the last few years. There was a video for that girl too but it was flattering and called her a 'hottie'. I'm now ready to label the behavior as bullying which I've been dragging my heels about.

Is this typical 3rd grade behavior now?

Advice needed! My son has always been a little behind in school. He has a summer birthday and we decided that since he was such a social child that we didn't want to redshirt him before kindergarten. We first noticed him testing a bit behind on standardized test (iReady) in 2nd grade, which was the same year as the Covid lockdown. In 3rd grade, he was getting straight A's in school (his private school was in person) but he continued to test a bit behind the expectations. Given that his grades were so good but his test performance was behind, we had some concerns about the quality of the education he was getting. This year in 4th grade, we found out he had gotten into a magnet school a month into his school year so we decided to move him. This new school uses technology very differently than his prior school (i.e. much more dependent on it) and does not communicate with parents at all regarding assignments, etc. His grades have been much lower this year so we found him a tutor twice a week and have been trying to work with him on our own in the evenings and over weekends. Despite all of these steps, his grades have continued to plummet. During this time, he has had 2 Covid quarantines and a teacher strike and his teacher ended up quitting with 2 days notice. We're currently on week 2 of a substitute teacher.

I'm trying to decide whether we need to seek testing for any sort of condition that might be contributing to this situation (dyslexia, ADHD, etc.). Apparently, the reservations are booking for 6 months out and even with insurance, the cost of testing him will be about $1,000 and take about 8 hours of our time. He is a very verbal and socially adept kid. He has never been at all interested in reading (and I've tried tons of great books with him - Harry Potter, Diary of Wimpy Kid, etc.). When he does read aloud to me, he frequently skips over words as if he is trying to go too fast. His teachers say he is always the first to turn in assignments and because of his haste isn't really adequately answering the questions. I am not sure if he is just trying to expend as little effort as possible and doesn't really take school seriously. However, I would feel horrible if there was something else at play and I was getting frustrated at him for something outside of his control.

I also know these past two years have been A LOT. In addition to the pandemic, we upended his school situation, his teacher quit with very little notice, etc.

Would you bring him to a clinical psychologist and have him evaluated for dyslexia, ADHD, etc.? Or would you give it a little time given all that has happened over the last two years?

Have your kids played around with the serious power they have in the phrase "I don't feel well"?

Both my kids (8 and 6) have told their teachers they don't feel well with unverifiable symptoms (sore throat, headache, nausea). Then I rush to pick up the kids, accept my over the top shaming from the office staff (I cried this time, not my finest moment), and bring them home only to see they are 100% fine. What do you do to prevent this??

It's only happened once each but I'm worried it will happen again because the power to control your parents for three days and sit at home seems too tempting to pass up.

Got my 7 year old's teacher assignment yesterday and found out that not only is he not with any of his friends, he's in a split 2/3 class (he's going into grade 2), and I'm freaking out a little bit. Does anybody have any experience with split grades? How do they work? I'm having a hard time figuring out how both grades are going to be equally balanced. I'm also worried about him socially, because he's already pretty small for his age and now he's going to be in a group of bigger kids. Plus apparently his split class is in a "divided classroom" (from what I understand, one giant classroom that sometimes uses white boards to split it into two classrooms) with another grade 3 class, so I'm worried that all his friends will end up a grade above him and next year he won't know anybody.

Basically I'm a mess and trying not to let him see because he seems pretty cool with it. If anybody has any information they could use to talk me down, I'd appreciate it.

Today my son's 1st grade teacher emailed me to let me know that a 2nd grader lost his temper at recess and started hitting, punching, and kicking boys in his class. My son was pushed down on the cement and punched and kicked in the face. My son wasn't particularly upset about it. His nose is red and he mentioned once while we were discussing it that maybe his eye hurts but he's acting fine and seemed fine about the whole thing when we discussed it. School is dealing with the 2nd grader.

One thing my son said to me that's replaying in my head is "I didn't hit back, my teacher is my weapon." I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand it's kind of genius. We've been working all summer on making sure he doesn't 'hit back' when his sister says something sassy. And just this morning he got in trouble for shoving me in the back for not driving him to school (we always walk!). So I'm glad he didn't hit. But on the other hand it sounds like he got trounced pretty hard. I'm shocked my very physical son just laid there and took it, fully believing his teachers wrath was the best defense. Does self defense play zero role?

My son (oldest of my 3 kids) is in 4th grade and has been going to his neighborhood Catholic school since he was 3 years old in their pre-school program. He loves his school and is a very social kid who is well liked by his classmates. One block away from his school (both are very close to our house) is a magnet school that is part of the public school system in our city (Chicago) that is very difficult to get into (due to a lottery - not as a result of testing in). I have applied to this magnet school every year since my son was 4 and entering kindergarten and every year I end up with a comically high spot on the waitlist. I have applied mostly to see if we would ever get in but wasn't really ever expecting it to happen. Flash forward until two weeks into the school year and I got an email yesterday that my son got into the magnet school and we have until Monday morning to decide whether to accept the offer. My son is absolutely devastated at the idea of leaving his friends and the school he calls his "happy place." However, his school is far inferior academically to the magnet school. His being at the magnet school would mean that both of his younger siblings could be pulled into the magnet school at the kindergarten level. However, the magnet school is part of the Chicago Public School system which has been a mess for the last two years (a month long strike before Covid; bitter union battles last year meaning they were closed pretty much until last month of school when they went hybrid). His Catholic school was in person all of last year without interruption. There is definitely a possibility that anything changing for the negative with Covid could mean he is back to remote learning.

I would feel terrible yanking my son out of a school where he is happy and content but I can't help but think that the better school might open up lots of doors for him. Also, my daughter just started the preschool program at his current Catholic school so this means we would now have a third drop-off in the morning (one to daycare, one to the Catholic school, and one to the magnet school) if we accepted until she could join at the magnet school this year. I'm scared about causing any more trauma to him after the last year and a half of Covid related trauma that we have all endured.

Tell me, hive, what would you do?!? I have this awful pit in my stomach in trying to make this decision.

Do your kids' schools have any covid precautions in place for lunchtime? My daughter's elementary school will require masks through the day (and I'm feeling so grateful for that), but it sounds like their plan is to eat lunch in the cafeteria as normal...and obviously, kids won't wear masks while eating. And it's a lot of kids in tight quarters.

There's this part of me that feels like this undoes the safety I'm feeling from wearing masks through the rest of the day...I totally understand the logistical nightmare of spacing out kids when a school is at full capacity, so I empathize with the school's dilemma and realize there's not a whole lot that can be done. I guess I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing? Is this safer than I'm feeling and is working out elsewhere? We homeschooled last year and our schools were mainly virtual or a hybrid in the spring, so I'm a little out of touch with how meals at school were handled when all kids are back. How are your schools handling lunchtime?

We made it 7 days into the new school year and today afterschool care called and let me know there was a positive so they have to close for two weeks.

I'm not too surprised by that but I am surprised the kids are still expected to go to school in person. Since they wear masks whatever contact they had with the positive individual is not considered 'close contact' so they only have to do a 'modified quarantine' which apparently just means no extracurricular activities. If we choose to keep them home to protect the other students/staff they would get unexcused absences.

Last year when I thought everything was a little on the overprotective side and there was so much safety for show I followed all the procedures and did as I was told. That was my plan for this year too but my gut is telling me that I should say screw the procedures and keep the kids home. The thought of another year of weighing risks like this makes me want to scream into a pillow.

Is annual in-person registration a thing in your area?

My school district requires elementary parents to turn in signed paperwork the week before school. This year due to Covid they made the usually walk through event a drive thru at the school 4-7 pm. I arrived at 6pm and we were in the car line for 85 minutes. My neighbor went three different times hoping the line would get shorter but it kept growing. It was way worse than normal this year but every year it's a PITA.

I just don't understand why we need to do this. We also complete a whole host of forms online before this event. I can't understand why this event is necessary except that there's a chance to guilt each parent into joining the parent's club face to face.

I appreciate that the staff was working hard and had to stay late but I'm really hoping this year's mess was the nail in the in-person coffin.

Are you doing an in-person registration every year?

For the first time since I went back to work after having my first baby in 2013 my childcare costs are going down!

Both kids will be in school, school is supposed to be regular full days. My youngest is out of Kinder so even he will be going full days. If everything goes according to plan we'll only be using care 11.5 hours/week. We've cut the hours down a lot since we're not tied to commutes anymore.

It felt like we would never get here but we're here! Seriously Covid don't screw with me on this. I need this.

Just wondering how the quoted feedback below compares to homework/direction others get.

This was the note included in my Kindergarten DS's report card. It is almost the same feedback we got on DD's Kinder report card from a different teacher when she was in Kinder. She was behind in reading so I really took the feedback to heart (which made me pretty anxious). DS on the other hand is actually doing well so I'm a little surprised there are as many recommended practices. To me it reads like your child is in trouble, you must do these things now.

Besides this comment we got additional pages about how to read to & with him and how to practice sight words. And a double sided page we got earlier this week on reading to our kid. Seeing on the report card makes me feel like the pressure is on.

I love the teacher and recognize how hard this year is, I'm not interested in teacher blaming. I'm just curious if this is the standard issue parent homework list nowadays.

We're distance learning at the local public school in the Bay Area.

"It has been a pleasure getting to know DS in class. He has made good growth this trimester. Please continue practicing letter names/sounds
& recognizing sight words quickly! Play word games to build phonemic awareness skills, such as rhyming & blending/taking apart short vowel words (cat, mug, hop), being sure each sound is said correctly. Keep reading each day to build reading/comprehension skills. Have a mix of them reading to you & you reading to them with books you have at home, book bags, or Raz-Kids.
Practice pointing to one word at a time & saying only one word for each point, finding words/chunks of words they know, & putting sounds/chunks together. Then retell-discuss the 5-finger elements. Continue to practice writing capital/lowercase letters, along with drawing/labeling pictures and writing 1-2 simple sentences to tell the story, being sure to stretch out words & write the sounds they hear. Please practice writing/identifying numbers to 20 & showing them in different ways with objects. Keep up the hard work, DS!"

I have two elementary school students in distant learning this year (K & 2nd). I'd like to get their teachers something for the holidays because 2020 but I'm stumped on how or what because they are doing distance learning.

I plan to ask on our school's parents' Facebook group for ideas but I've hesitated because I'm afraid I'll be stuck organizing and I have no ideas. How is your school handling it?

If your schools haven't opened do you have an anticipated date of return?

My area (California, Bay Area) just met state and local guidelines for school opening. At the school board meeting tonight they decided to delay the decisions around planning reopening until January. At this point I don't really expect the schools will open this year.

I’m curious what a normal amount of communication is in first grade. My older one just started first grade at a new school with a new (possibly first year) teacher. And I’m finding the amount that’s expected from us to be overwhelming.

For some context, I have a job that can at times be fairly stressful and in the evenings I need down time. I spend most of my days going from meetings to meeting and then most nights I cook dinner. I also have a very needy/screamy/still potty training 4 year old that I typically have to contend with while DH does the dishes.

So anyways, my son’s teacher has given us a huge amount of paperwork on communication, homework, behavior, etc. We receive emails from her plus she also uses an app called Remind to send us messages. We are expected to read his binder every night and initial his daily behavior. We are also expected to do his homework with him (she told us 15 minutes now and 20 minutes later this year) and we’re supposed to have him read 15 minutes every night. Every Tuesday we’re supposed to check his blue folder for school announcements.

I feel like I’m being bombarded with messages from the school and the teacher. I also got really annoyed when I checked his behavior today and she circled where I didn’t initial yesterday. Like I’m the student that didn’t do an assignment. I’m a busy ass grown up who read it and didn’t have a pen and had to deal with a poop accident from the 4 year old and then forgot. DH told me we should just initial all of them ahead of time and I was annoyed so I did for the week 😂.

I don’t like that there’s so many forms of communication, so many messages, and so many expectations on the parents. I have a busy stressful life and I just want him to go to school and come home, like he did last year.

I know this was kind of a rant, but I’m also curious what’s normal for first grade and elementary school in terms of parental involvement and all the communication.

Has anyone purchased a pair of blue light filtering glasses for their child to wear on remote education days when they’re spending a lot of time in front of a screen? My eight old recently requested a pair after seeing them on a classmate. It’s unclear at this point with her eyes are actually bothering her, or she simply thinks they look cool… But I’m open to the idea and definitely think her eyes could be getting tired from the extra screen time. I’m curious if anyone has tried them out and what they and their kid think. Thanks!

Corduroy on "Reading Intervention - What to ask?"

I want to have a constructive parent teacher conference call tomorrow. Any suggestions on specific questions to ask? Any insight on 'Response to Intervention'?

My 2nd grade daughter was abruptly put into a 4x per week reading program called Response to Intervention last week. The teacher hasn't told us anything about it and asked that we direct all questions to the paraprofessional working with our daughter. I emailed the paraprofessional and explained that I'd like information as soon as she's ready to give it because I'm confused as to what the issue is and what the goals of the program are.

DD attended one session on Thursday. On Friday her teacher asked to do a one on one session with her and my daughter read something to her. We still haven't heard from the paraprofessional.

I'm frustrated by the lack of communication. This is all through distance learning while my daughter is at daycare so I'm not observing any of the calls.

We have a teacher conference tomorrow and I want to know a whole lot more about why DD is in this program and what it's supposed to do for her. DD has always been on the slow side to meet standards for reading but when DH and I raised concerns with her K and 1st teacher they weren't concerned. In March she was a Fountas and Pinnell 'I'. She has made big improvements since then and probably more importantly she's decided that she wants to read whereas before she had no interest in it.

Her teacher this year evaluated her at 'E' but only told DD it was the level they would set her reading app too. I figured it was so the kids could have some rapid progress/review and didn't think too much of it since it wasn't communicated to the parents. I was trying to not be 'that mom' and come in demanding to know what was going on with her score.

I think it’s about that time to get a thread started for our rising Kinders! I’m also in the 2018 Kinder thread and I copied the intro questions from there!

Maybe we can start with introductions?

1) Child's name
2) Birth month
3) Type of school: public, private, charter, whatever
4) What method of transportation?

Anyone do a super awesome Outschool or similar class for this age? I’d love to find a circle and storytime that is really engaging online. Does that exist for a 5 year old?

We’re in virtual public school still but thinking about switching to homeschool after this week. I’ve been half doing it anyway and my Kinder boy is fine 1-1 (if I time it right) but struggling to pay attention during zoom/videos. I think it would be good though if he had something outside just me, if it can be engaging enough. Thanks for ideas!

I figure I will need to label everything now since kids won’t be sharing supplies.

Can you recommend a versatile/easy to use label maker that you love?

I was looking at this:

School started last Thursday. Starting Monday we plan to have the kids doing their distance education from a daycare. I just realized that masks are probably going to be an issue for my Kindergartener since there's so much focus on phonics (or is it phonemics?) during the synchronous learning. I was thinking maybe I should get him a clear mask for that time. Has anyone tried clear with their kid or for themselves? Any recommendations?
