I got a subscription to yogaglo during my last pregnancy. There were a bunch of different teachers that had pregnancy yoga videos - my favorite was Stephanie Snyder. I liked having a variety of teachers and sequences because working out at home is not my most favorite thing to do! The variety made it tolerable.

I don't like Hilaria Baldwin normally, but I love this yoga DVD. It isn't super challenging for me as I've been doing yoga off an on for many years, but I love the stretches it uses and makes me feel so relaxed when I'm done. It's been great for my mental health.

As a spin off from my prior post, does anyone have any prenatal yoga videos (YouTube or otherwise) they would recommend? I’m looking for like 15-20 min to do in the evenings. I’d love to do a class since that was great when I was pregnant with LO1 but it’s just not in the cards for me right now schedule wise.

So first things first, you cannot change everything about the way you eat. So think about what/why/when.

I am a snacker - I'd rather have 10 snacks a day than 3 meals. But if my snacks consist of 10 bowls of doritos I'd be in real trouble!! So I work around that with healthier versions. Something salty, grab four pickles. Want dip? Make ranch with greek yogurt and eat with zucchini and carrot sticks. Something sweet? frozen banana icecream or a greek yogurt with frozen berries and whipped cream.

As for exercise, I had a personal trainer for my whole pregnancy. If this is a luxury you can afford I HIGHLY recommend it. There was no way I was going to exercise on my own. I had a weekly appointment during my lunch hour so I basically had no reason not to go. No matter how tired I was, I always felt better after. And it made pushing very easy!!

The other thing with exercise is find out what you like, what makes you excited. I love to read, but reading and exercising are not very combinable - so I listen to audio books. I go out for a walk or on the treadmill and listen to my favorite book - the time flies by!

Good luck!

@cyoung: Besides being a p/t EN professor, I am a NASM-certified personal trainer (* degrees in Exercise Science and Biomechanics). While I am not a nutritionist, I may be able to offer a bit of advice.
In your first trimester, your baby only needs 100 calories more (per day) than your usual caloric intake; however, if you are already overweight from over-eating, you probably do not need to add that 100 calories on. One hundred calories can equate to an extra large hard boiled egg, a large glass of milk, a serving of PB (or almond butter) on a few carrots, many types of yogurt cups, one sandwich thin (no toppings), etc.
In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, the caloric need to sustain a pregnancy is greater at 300-500 extra calories per day; however, you would need to figure out your pre-pregnancy caloric needs (* most women need between 1200-2000 calories per day) and then add 100 or 300 calories accordingly. Since you have been overeating, I would visit a nutritionist first to figure out your base nutritional needs and how you may best achieve a slow gain during pregnancy.
Another goal should be to tackle the snacking before it is out of control. Start a food diary or use an app to track your meals (and calories/nutients) to make certain you and baby are eating "healthy." My advice is to ask yourself why you are hungry when you want to eat ... wait 10 minutes and then see if you are still hungry for it. Drink lots of water. Thirst can mask itself as hunger... broth soups are great! You can have a soup, feel "full" and eat half the calories you would from a carbohydrate rich diet. Make certain soups are rich in vegetables for your growing baby. 😉 Also, figure out your cravings and make healthier substitutions ... Sometimes, a salty craving can be fixed with a pickle over chips, a sweet craving can be fixed with a yogurt (or gum!) rather than cookies or ring-dings, a savory craving could be a few craft "boutique" cheese slices with olives or tomato versus pepperoni ... Do not deprive yourself of healthy choices while pregnant, just limit the junk. Everything in moderation.
Now here is my favorite part, exercise. In early pregnancy, there are very few limitations on exercise. Physician's ask you don't ride bikes and horses (or jump out of planes) for various commonsense reasons, but honestly, I paddleboarded until I was 5 mos pregnant with very little issue. Do things you ENJOY. Some examples of pregnancy approved exercise: Pregnancy yoga for flexibility, lift light weights to maintain strength (and burn the extra visceral fat that is not aiding in the support of your pregnancy), swimming is amazing, Zumba is fun while pregnant (* the baby will react in the later months), walk or hike ... simply, just move and keep your activities varied so YOU don't get bored. Also, in your later months, both the prone and supine positions will cause you discomfort and should be discontinued as prone places your body weight on both your organs and the baby while supine puts pressure from the growing fetus on the vena cava leading to a reduced return of blood flow to the heart which is bad news for you both.
Best of luck and if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to write. 👍😁

I failed my 1 hour glucose test and put myself on a GD diet to prepare if I failed the three. I passed, however it was a good exercise in self control. It really helped me keep my eating in check too
Maybe check that out?

I think my best tip is to just eat mindfully. Aka, really think about what you are doing, how your food tastes, how you feel. Sure, those cookies look delicious but you’re not that hungry and they’re not going to give you as much pleasure as if you were hungrier and really wanted them. Does that make sense? Try and balance all of your meals with protein/fat/carbs/fiber to prevent blood sugar spikes and it will make you less apt to reach for something less nutritious.

As for working out, I can’t help you out 😂 I stopped after my first trimester, but I try and stay on my feet a lot during the day. I’m a dietitian so I could talk food all day 😃

Ladies. I'm already a bit fluffy as it is and I'm pregnant with baby number 3. Throw your tips on how to avoid overeating (I love food and I tend to eat out of bordem and for comfort.) Also tips on working out and staying motivated as well would be great. What worked for you ladies?

Of course consult with your doctor, but I think the general consensus is that you can continue the same routine into pregnancy with a few exceptions, and that you should just avoid starting any new strenuous regimen.

I've always been a little hardcore with my cardio. As long as I wasn't out of breath/gasping for air and could hold a decent convo, I continued my usual regimen. I usually do HIIT cardio but am TTC now so I have toned it down (HIIT usually makes me completely breathless!).

I ran till 38 weeks with both pregnancies, although I was much slower towards the end. I preferred higher inclines and less impact at that point but was still doing around 5 miles or so and got my heart rate up a good amount. Your body will tell you to slow down if anything--joints, back, etc. once you start to grow!

@MrsKRB: that 130 rule is absolute bullshit and has been disproven through research. Arg why do doctors even pass that harmful information on! I ran from 5weeks till the morning I gave birth, probably 4 times a week. Pregnant with DS#2, I never stopped. It helped so much with nausea, keeps me mentally much healthier, and I truly believe it helped me have what must be one of Earth's fastest and easiest delivery (5 hours total total, 20 pushes or so). My HR hasn't really changed but sometimes 130 is very hard and sometimes 150 feels easy so I go with effort. I am a believer in running!

I did, but only until about 6 months with DD1 because I got carpal tunnel in my feet so switched to the eliptical and bike/spin classes, and not much with DD2. I’m a more serious than average runner but pretty low tech because I find it super easy to get sucked into numbers, which can cause anxiety. I ran for feel when I was pregnant. If I felt like crap, I slowed down or walked. I know my body very well and know when it’s time to tone it down. I was definitely of the mindset that you can train your whole life but you will only be pregnant a few times.FWIW I personally came back tougher sfter each pregnancy. Also consider how you’re running: unless you’re trying to increase your fitness you probably don’t need to worry. If you’re in like the 8 minute mile or slower zone you’re going to be fine, but I wouldn’t start doing track workouts for the first time while pregnant.

I did a 15K (7.5 weeks) and 5K (32 weeks) with my son, and a 10K (7 weeks) and a half marathon (almost 14 weeks) with my daughter. My Garmin displays HR so that was a guide, but I truly ran by feel/effort more than anything. Happy to Wall you/email back and forth as I have lots of thoughts on running during pregnancy! I’m 4 weeks PP and can’t wait to get back to it!

I ran a ton with my first pregnancy! I did start using a heart rate monitor but it stressed me out too much to try and follow the old outdated number guidelines. I ran a half marathon at 12 weeks pregnant with the heart rate monitor but had to stop and walk a ton because I was trying to follow the dr's advice about heart rate but I wasn't tired and didn't feel like I was overdoing it at all. That's when I quit using the HR monitor, I knew my heart rate was naturally higher. I knew I was fit and everyone's heart rate is different so there's really no correct heart rate zone to be in. I based it off exertion and how I felt. I did a sprint triathlon at 23 weeks pregnant and raced pretty hard and didn't worry at all. Baby girl was totally fine.

I didn't run specifically but I did keep up high intensity workouts for the first trimester. I never monitored my heart rate but I know mine was above 130 - my heart rate is much higher than that during a typical workout..

My doctor told me I could continue working out as hard as usual until it was uncomfortable. Once I hit the second trimester I did lower intensity workouts.

I ran throughout my pregnancy, I typically ran at least a few miles each morning, up to the day I went into labor. I also ran a half marathon at 30 weeks pregnant. I had a super fast labor and delivery - only pushed for five minutes - and I think the running really helped the baby to be in a good position.

I didn't monitor heart rate or anything, just made sure not to push myself too hard. Typical pace per mile was around 2-3 minutes slower than what it would have been pre-pregnancy by third tri. I expected that at some point it would get uncomfortable and I'd need to stop, but this never happened. And never had incontinence issues with running, during or after pregnancy. I did start wearing a support belt during second tri (just a cheap one from Amazon), which I think helped.

Anyways, I know it varies from case to case, but I think running helped me a ton with pregnancy. If you're pushing yourself too hard, I think your body will let you know...

Who here runs (ran) while pregnant? I didn’t do anything with my first, but got really into running after she was born and ran a marathon in May. I had to take 4 weeks off of running for IVF, but I’ve been running for the past 2 weeks (just about 6 weeks pregnant).

My main question is, what did your heart rate average when you ran? I did not have a fancy watch during my marathon, so now I’m kind of obsessed with watching my heart rate, and it’s about 160 or so during my runs. The aprn at my ultrasound today said to keep it under 130, which I know is outdated information, but now I’m a little nervous.

@MrsKRB: 7w- 13 weeks was soooo hard. My boobs were so much more sore this pregnancy. I would also always run by this homeless guy downtown and almost barf for the next 10 minutes. Never happened with DS1. I'm 17w now so I'm feeling better... but I'm carrying around 12 extra pounds (already!) so running and even biking have become tough!!
