My March 2020 baby would not take a bottle since I was home all the time and exclusively breastfeeding during those early months, but we got her to drink out of a cup instead. She was older than 3 months though.

My youngest refused to take a bottle at home, from me or DH. It was frustrating but I talked to his daycare and they said it happens all the time. They have lots of tricks to get them to take a bottle. In just a few days he went from eating 1oz at a time to taking a full bottle for every feed. Sometimes it just takes a completely different person feeding them for the babes to figure it out.

@LadyDi: thanks, trying different bottles and offering while she was distracted were the biggest pieces of the LC’s advice, and the pediatrician only said to be consistent and offer every day.

She takes antacid through a syringe daily and we did confirm that she’ll take milk that way, too, so I know she won’t starve, but it’s still super stressful and a bummer to have to use the last of my leave trying to force a bottle on her.

Oh this sounds very stressful. I don't have personal experience but my friend's son refused the bottle early on and they had to introduce a cup to get him to drink anything. I don't remember how old he was though, I think around 6 months old. Have you talked to her pediatrician as opposed to a lactation consultant? I would probably start trying different bottle and nipple types. Hang in there!

Does anyone have any tips for overcoming bottle refusal? My 3 month old suddenly decided she wouldn’t drink from a bottle anymore about 10 days ago. The most we’ve gotten her to do during that time is chew on the nipple and dribble the milk out the side. Previously she could drink a full 3-4 ounces, and we were giving bottles a couple times a week from the time she was 3 weeks old. I saw a lactation consultant on Wednesday who recommended a couple of things, but we are still having serious issues, so I was wondering if anyone here had dealt with this and what you did. My daughter is supposed to start daycare soon and I am freaking out that she’s going to starve all day.

@Baby Boy Mom: and @clementine12: If the pate is made from liver, you need to be very careful about how much a baby ingests because of the high levels of vitamin A. I've seen anywhere between 1-2 teaspoons and 1-2 tablespoons only once or twice a week.

For babies I would specifically focus on animal fat. So meat, chicken, fish. I know purées are annoying but you can make like a homemade chicken soup and blend it so the meat and skin is blended into the purée. Eggs are also great. Paté if you can find or make it. And dairy as mentioned above- yogurt, cheese, sour cream, butter. Good luck!

This question reminds me of this awesome post from Jennifer Anderson, an awesome, realistic nutritionist on IG. She uses whole milk, but I think even adding a portion of *canned* coconut cream/milk would add a significant amount of fat! (I think using only coconut cream/milk would be a bit *too* much coconut flavor). The canned stuff meant for cooking has way more fat than the cartons.

@karenbme @Chuckles thank you! I made a big batch of homemade Mac and cheese (the infamous Paula Deen recipe with BUTTER) and that's been great to serve. Also gave some veg with just butter and ended up with a happy greasy baby. Win!:

-Butter added to anything, or give baby straight up unsalted butter (they usually love it).
-Coconut oil with baked sweet potato. Again you can spoon coconut oil to baby too, haha.
-Homemade Beef or chicken Broth without the fat skimmed off, give it to baby like a soup or juice, or you can cook other foods in the broth
-Pork belly
-sausages
-canned sardines

I would second @karenbme: that you can add a little olive oil, butter, or coconut oil to any purees or veggies that get cooked soft enough to mouth (like carrots). What about mashed potatoes or salmon?

Some suggestions that my LO liked from a young age:

-small cubes of softish cheese (ie monterey jack/mozzerella)
-mac and cheese (homemade without crunchies on top)
-scrambled eggs
-pulled pork (thoroughly chopped to the point where it was kind of pasty and gross to adults but she LOVED it and ate it by the fistful)
-cut up biscuits (with or without gravy)

you could also add butter (or your preferred fat) to anything and everything else you're feeding either as part of the cooking process or afterwards.

Trying to help LO gain weight - 10 mo, no teeth. We do a lot of full fat yogurt and avocado but that's getting boring. What do you feed babies that has a high fat content? Bonus points if it doesn't require a parent to spoon it in

@caitcat: ah you totally captured how I'm feeling! LO turns 5 months old today so we're close to starting solids! I'm eyeing the box of baby cereal and wondering when to start... So glad your LO's issues resolved! I'm also wondering if adding a very small amount of dairy back into my diet will undo all the progress. His reflux is better, and his eczema is all gone. But there's a case of La Colombe lattes starting at me in the kitchen lol!

@MoonMoon: I'm vegetarian too, and soy was hard to cut out...I remember at some points feeling like any of my protein sources caused problems for the baby. It's hard! Early on, beans/lentils seemed to make her gassier, and then when I cut out dairy/soy, I felt like I was running out of options. I found that dairy made a bigger difference than soy for her though, so I ended up just trying to limit it as best I could but not stress about it quite as much. Everything got a lot better around 6-9 months as she took off with solids.

@caitcat: it sounds like our LOs had/have similar issues! I'm glad elimination and probiotics helped you. I've been off dairy for 3.5 weeks now and his skin is so clear.

I used the Gerber soothe probiotic drops with both of my kids. I don't think they were a cure-all, but my memory is that they helped in general.

Also, in case it helps - my oldest also had eczema that cleared up more quickly than her silent reflux and digestive issues did after I eliminated dairy and soy from my diet. Her fussiness in general improved pretty quickly, but it took a little longer than I'd hoped for overall improvement. I hope your little one gets some more relief soon!

We use Gerber's Soothe drop probiotics on recommendation from her ped. DD (9 mo) has been on low-dose amoxicillin for a bladder issue since birth. At one point they switched her to bactrim and it was a disaster (screaming at night, gassy), so we switched her back and I started the probiotic.
FWIW, her stools were quite soft until she really got into solid food., so that could be normal for your son.

If anyone has any words of wisdom or recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate it!

My DS is almost 5 months. He's consistently had issues with eczema, frequent spit-ups, and frequent very liquid stools. The pediatrician has ruled out reflux and since he's gaining weight really well, she's not concerned. She okayed eliminating things from my diet to rule out food sensitivities. I'm coming up on 3 weeks with no dairy, and his eczema seems a lot better, in fact it's almost gone. Yay! But he still has frequent, very loose stools and tons of spit-up. I figured by 5 months he would have grown out of this but doesn't seem like it. He's exclusively breastfed.

I keep feeling guilty because I had to take 2 rounds of antibiotics before he was a month old, one for an infection and one for dental surgery. I'm wondering if that affected his digestive health. The pediatrician has okayed probiotics, but I don't know what's a good brand for babies. I'm wondering if this sounds like a good idea from your experiences, and if so if there's a specific probiotic you'd recommend.

Thank you!

@Chuckles: Happy to help! I remember being most concerned with bedtime, as LO was very attached to that bottle, but moving it back, time wise, helped, and then we started to give the bottle out of the nursery (in the living room) to disconnect it from bedtime even more. He's 16mo and gets his bedtime milk in his 360 cup 30 minutes before bed and before we brush teeth.

I'm trying to remember. I think we started gradually mixing more and more wcm into the formula in bottles until the ratio was all wcm and no more formula, and once that was done, we moved from bottles to 360 cups by swapping the afternoon bottle first and gradually working toward the morning and nighttime bottles (nighttime was the last to go). What helped us with the nighttime bottle was moving that bottle further and further away from actual bedtime until it was about 30 minutes before bedtime, so that the bottle wasn't so connected to bedtime. It happened quite fast for my LO because he was excited for the cup and didn't notice any changes with the wcm.
