Chuckles on "2.5 year old will only drink milk from a bottle"

Help! My 2.5yo DD will only drink milk from a bottle. We tried transitioning from a bottle to a cup around 12 months, 16 months, 18 months, and 2 years. Each time, she absolutely refuses the cup. I've tried all the things - different milk temps, different cups including letting her pick a special cup, the Nuk sippys that are basically bottles, snuggled up with the sippy, etc. She is very strong willed and just has none of it.

She was drinking 2 bottles a day - at wake up and before bed (but always brushing teeth after). Otherwise she drinks water from all sorts of cups, including straw and open cups.

So on Monday I was like, we really need to stop. We told her the bottle fairy was coming to bring her bottles to new babies and would leave her a gift. I really hoped that eventually she would cave and use a cup.

So far she's been mild-medium upset about it at bedtime and in the morning but otherwise isn't super distressed. It's taking her *forever* to fall asleep though, like not until 10pm. And she has been eating a snack before bed. But she still absolutely refuses to drink milk from a cup.

Since she's not crazy upset about it, I'm mostly worried about how to make sure she's getting enough calcium, but also I just need her to go to sleep. She loves cheese but if she has more than a piece a day she gets constipated. She will also eat yogurt and oatmeal, but not every day. Same with ice cream. Otherwise she's kind of picky and won't eat other foods that have calcium like leafy greens.

Thoughts? Advice? Commiseration?

I need suggestions for healthy carbs for a younger toddler. DD is 13 months and loves fruit and meat. I'm struggling to find carbs that she will eat. She loves graham crackers and mac and cheese, but that's not super healthy and any more than a tiny bit of cheese makes her constipated. We've had a little success with plain oatmeal, but she will only eat a tiny bit. And I've been hesitant to try rice because she's so easily constipated. Any suggestions? Thanks!
ETA: she's never been into anything sweet potato or beans, but I keep trying. She did once eat roasted spaghetti squash.

Covid-19 has caused a few changes with how school lunches can be prepared. No heat ups. So please let me know how and which thermos have worked for you. I’m interested in how to keep more foods hot/cold and ideas please. LO is not into sandwiches or wraps. I’ve been working on it but would like to see some other ideas. TIA

My 19 month old spits out his water or milk every single $^^#!$^^ time he has it. He'll drink some and then he'll start spitting it out. When he does that, we take the drink, tell him that we don't spit out whatever it is and that he's all done. He still does it. Every time. Every day. For the past 7 months ever since he's started using a cup. Im so sick of this behavior. Can I slap it out of him yet? Help!!!!!!!!!

Taking any ideas or advice!

My very opinionated 18 month old decided a couple days ago that she will NOT sit in the high chair for meals. She eats three meals a day at home so this is a major problem! I think it may have started with a bad teething diaper rash but that’s fine now.

I’ve been trying to just put the straps on and let her work it out but she’s a kid who will just scream and scream. However I really don’t want to cave and let her eat on my lap or standing up as I’m afraid we’ll be stuck with it, and we tried a regular chair yesterday but it’s too messy, she doesn’t sit still, etc. I SAH and solo a lot so I feel like giving up the high chair is a big mistake but endless screaming during meals is wearing me down fast :bummed:

DS2 is almost 17 months and has become a bottle monster since being sick over Christmas. Before that he would get a bedtime formula bottle of 6-8oz and very occasional at night or early morning. He would typically sleep 7-5 ish. This was acceptable to us.

However, since being sick for over a week and near dehydration over Christmas, we got lax with bottles and gave them whenever simply to get liquids into him. This has evolved to multiple night wakes over the past 3 weeks and he is demanding baba whenever he wakes at night, in the mornings, he’s desperate for it before bed and really all the time. It’s time to do something as it’s driving me nuts.

He is very demanding and stubborn, is a giant 90th percentile kid. He doesn’t need it and he eats very well. From 3 am onwards today he had 14 oz of formula, a bagel, strawberries, and two snack containers of various dry cereal before we got to daycare. I do think he’s having a growth spurt.

We tried just doing a sippy of milk this morning and he lost his mind, threw it across the room and bellowed for baba (we gave him the bottle and he was happy as can be)

For my older son, we gradually decreased his bedtime amount and it was no issue. I don’t think this will work with him as he will scream if we put less in and he wants more. The night wakings he is demanding too. We have halfheartedly tried just cuddling, cup of milk but that’s a firm NO and he will scream bloody murder and kick the walls until he gets the bottle.

I feel like suffering and going cold turkey is the way but does anyone else have any brilliant and less painful ideas with a kid like this?

Also relevant is he started new daycare this week but so far is doing very well with no tears 🤷🏻‍♀️

If I fill my kids thermos funtainer with milk at like 10pm, put it in the fridge......then take it out at 5:30 to send with kids to school (no fridge) will it be cold thru lunchtime?

I'm thinking the insulation would keep the fridge coldness out & thus milk would be warm by 10am......no?

Has anyone ever used PackIt or similar freeze-able lunch bags? Do they actually prolong the amount of time food stays safe to eat(as opposed to a typical SkipHop/PBKids lunch bag with an ice pack)?

My kids are at day amp, and their lunches sit outside in the heat for 3-4 hours - our typical lunch boxes really won’t keep much of anything cold enough (yogurt, deli meats, cheeses), and it is really limiting their lunch options! Thanks.

I feel like we started around a year with my first but my memory is shit.
Last night I made a full meal (which is rare for me) of things I thought everyone would like. Even my 1yo who is generally a good eater (see other thread I just created though).
He wouldn’t eat a thing. Except tomatoes from the salad. My husband wanted to give him something different but I said no. He felt DS2 he too young for that, but I really feel like right now is when he’s going to figure out that if he refuses his dinner he’ll get PB sandwich or fruit. He’s def starting to test us and rebel a little.

Not looking for general opinions on this “method”. Only when YOU started it if you do/did it.

I don’t remember this with my 1st.
Almost like clockwork at 15 months he’s refusing meats that he has always loved. Pickier with veggies he loved too, but better than meat.

The only consistent thing I can get him to eat are beans (black, pinto, etc) and lentils. Which thankfully are both very healthy, but the variety over here is pretty minimal lately.

He also won’t eat cheese or eggs, but that’s been ALWAYS. So his protein options are severely lacking since refusing meat.

Could it be teething??? I’m pretty perplexed.

I’m going crazy! LO is not eating much and he use to eat a variety. I keep offering but he won’t budge. It’s been approximately 2 weeks right after his little stomach ache and it seems like he has been different when it comes to eating. He says no and it seems like he snacks... tonight he ate scrambled eggs, milk and yogi. At school, he doesn’t eat much but a pouch, bar and fruit or whatever I send he picks... I don’t want him losing weight and I don’t want him to not eat and go to bed hungry. He eats breakfast every morning- waffles, yogurt, cheese and milk.... any suggestions, does it get better?

We eat dinner every night together at the table- there’s a routine it’s just he won’t eat as much....

My 2.5 year old has always been a great eater. Once in a while she'd overstuff her mouth with food she likes, but she has never had an issue with chewing and swallowing.

Over the past few days, she has started chipmunking food in her cheeks - usually it's something she doesn't really like, but has been told she needs to eat a few bites of (egg, apple w/ the skin), but she's also done it with oatmeal when I didn't ask her to eat more than she wanted/give any sort of ultimatum. She will hold it until someone notices, and has to be coaxed to spit it out. Yesterday I didn't realize she was doing it, and she held a mouthful of watery oatmeal for 20-30 minutes through school dropoff and errands! Today she was holding apples after breakfast, and I had to sweep her mouth after she put in a jellybean I gave her for potty training efforts, because she couldn't chew it (I had hoped she would swallow once she realized she'd get a treat).

Today I asked her if something hurt, and she showed me her throat...but that may just be power of suggestion. I've told DH we have to stop pressuring her to eat things she doesn't want to, at least for the time being, so there is no pressure for her to pocket.

Anyone's kids ever do this? I'm really hoping it is just a power struggle and not a long term feeding issue thing.

Hi all! With my first, I was generally lucky in that she liked most foods (or would at least try it) as a baby and toddler. She’s gotten a little more picky now that she’s almost 4 but she’ll still at least try her veggies (and there a few she will just happily eat anyway). But when in doubt, I’ve been able to sneak in her veggies as a sauce or chopped up into a rice or pasta dish. Her younger sis, however, has always been more picky (especially with veggies, sauce, pasta, rice) so it’s hard to get her to eat veggies on their own or snuck into her meals as a sauce or dip for rice, pasta, etc. She also doesn’t get the concept yet of “if you try or eat this veggie, I’ll let you have that treat,” so that isn’t helpful. What’s worked well for your picky kiddos to keep them eating healthy while keeping it from being a battle?

My 13 mo has a very strong preference for purees, and a strong aversion to finger foods/being spoon fed. When he doesn't want something, it's a very hard no.

He absolutely refused repeated attempts at blw. Around 10 months he started to take some finger foods, but he has been sick a bunch for the past month and has regressed. He will eat virtually anything in packet form, but will refuse the same puree on a spoon or as finger food. so i.e. he'll gulp down a pureed banana from a (super-overpriced) packet, but refuses pureed banana on a spoon or banana as a finger food. The one exception is that he loves cheerios, and does great at picking them up and eating them.

I have cooked so many different types of food for him and pack him a few finger foods every day for his lunch at daycare, but he's pretty picky there as well. I brought it up at his 12 month checkup, but ped was not concerned as he's a healthy weight. We can bring it up again at the 15 month, but I don't think any sort of feeding therapy will be an option until then, if at all.

Anybody dealt with this? What was your strategy? I don't know if it's my fault for offering packets: he just prefers them and holds out for it and would do fine with finger foods once he realizes packets are no longer an option. Or if there are other things I need to do to build his tolerance for finger foods first. He did have an anaphylactic reaction around 10 months when we introduced an allergen. I don't know if that could have caused an aversion to finger food, but the regression didn't start at that time...

When I night weaned my one year old a month ago, we instituted a no feeding before 6 am rule. Mommy also doesn't get up to play before 6am, which means he needs to stay in his crib until then. At the time, he was typically sleeping until 7. Even before night weaning, we were toast if he woke up around 5, as he wouldn't go back to sleep. But before night weaning, he was eating around 2/3/4 am and rarely would wake up again until a reasonable hour.

Since night weaning, he has only slept until 6 once. He's regularly waking up between 4:45 and 5:30. Occasionally he can be soothed back to sleep, but often not. He's clearly hungry, clearly exhausted, and very pissed until he gets his morning food. I thought it would just be an adjustment period, but this has been ongoing for awhile.

Did others have the same problem? Did you ride it out, give up and feed earlier, or find a fix? We've fixed the diaper leaks, which may have been contributing. I try really hard to get him to eat something protein rich at dinner. He's allergic to tree nuts, peanuts, eggs, and sesame (in tons of stuff including hummus) and is not very keen on meat or cheese (though i've found a few recipes), so maybe that's the problem? I asked the pediatrician and she said maybe he is just getting enough sleep waking up at 5 am, but I doubt it. He's visibly tired and will end up crashing and taking a cat nap on the way to daycare, which never happened before the night weaning.

Thank you!

I feel like I never worried about this with my first child. He just ate what we gave him (table food). My daughter is trickier. She refuses most table food apart from carbs (toast, crackers) or soft food (yogurt, applesauce). Ugh. No noodles
or veggies. I give her pureed veggies, but I feel like she should be moving on from these.

I know this has been asked a million times.. I'm totally dropping the ball on feeding my son dinner. He eats a decent breakfast and lunch and we don't overdo snacks but dinners are the SAME thing- pasta, beets (?), frozen veggies (sometimes), Greek yogurt, toast.
(I cook ethnic food, spicy chili/ soups, salads and fish a lot so almost everything we eat is out as leftovers.)
He generally won't eat meat.
Any ideas? Halp!

So my husband is going on 2nds (5P-3A) for a year. When he was on 3rds I could still cook dinner as usual, and then he would leave for work afterwards... Well now 4 nights a week it's just me and the 2 1/2 year old, and I'm finding myself not cooking at all and picking up fast food.

What are your go to meals if it's just you and a little? I can't keep eating out this often, and honestly I'm tired of fast food.

*No dietary restriction for either one of us, but no shellfish in the house so my husband doesn't die when he comes home.

My almost 4 year old still has soy milk (milk allergy) almost every morning and before bed. Sometimes he has it for mealtimes too. When did your child stop drinking/preferring milk?

My son is a little over 2 and has barely gained any weight in the last year. I've brought it up to our ped multiple times who isnt too concerned, but I'm still freaking out. He's so skinny and short! Granted he was a micro preemie, but he is currently less than 0% on the growth chart for height and barely there for weight.

Any magic fatty foods I can give him? Or sneaky feeding tips to get more calories in the little guy? Hes super picky so it doesn't help the situation. He'd live off icecream, yogurt, smoothies and fruits if he could. I'm so exhausted from meal times being such a battle.

So LO is still not drinking milk. He refuses the bottle and supplement formula. I still nurse at night so he’s getting BM. I stopped pumping once at work since yesterday because he won’t take BM in a bottle or cup. He will only drink water from his cups. It’s a good thing he weaned from the bottle so quickly but I am worried he hasn’t drank enough milk. I give yogurt, cheese and other calcium foods daily. Doc said to give time. I’m just scared he will lose weight. Is it normal for a 12 mo old to start to “thin out” as he’s walking and not on the formula etc???!? My family thinks I am worrying too much and he just had his well check up but that was before the transition. Any other suggestions? I offer high fats and he eats but is so active and just wants to go go go which I assume is normal because he just learned to walk....I give some solids and pouches because he’s eating that more. He throws his food on the floor at times so we feed him or hand him the food and encourage him to put in his mouth. We do a lot of praising for positive behavior and ignore the negative. I’m just worried he’s not getting enough.... sorry for being all over the place :/ ——TIA

Once again my daycare has called saying 3yo DS has diarrhea and we need to come get him. I'm 95% certain it is not true diarrhea because he had jalapeno chips yesterday...

But this is not the first time that we've been called to get him because of diarrhea which really was just loose stools. If I get called for DD for diarrhea, it is legit, with DS, who knows!

What food can I give him to stop him up a bit? He's allergic to milk, so that unfortunately rules out a lot of the typical advice I'm finding.

Hi all, I mostly just read along but I would really love any advice re: Toddlers who are fussy eaters!

My girl is 22 months now, did great with a decent variety of solids until about 14 months when the fussiness started, and progressively got worse. We have a list of about a dozen-ish foods she will generally eat now, and that's seriously all. She won't try any different foods at all, won't even touch them (even foods she used to happily eat all the time), and flips out if she doesn't like the look of whats in front of her.

I try not to make it a battle, I always offer a 'new' food with other foods I know she likes, I don't bribe, I don't get angry, I just keep offering. But it's just getting worse, as more and more 'approved' foods are slowly crossed off the list. She's a healthy weight, growing well, and still has one bottle of cows milk before bed (she's an excellent sleeper).

I'm getting so incredibly frustrated every day, is this normal toddler stuff or is it worth chatting to her child-health nurse about it?

Hi guys! Happy almost Mother's Day if I don't get the chance to post again before then.

I feel like I'm at my wits end with my 2.5yr old boy. He is beyond picky now and will only eat a handful things. He used to eat everything and now... not so much. He won't eat meat or chicken anymore or even veggie burgers. He used to love eggs two months ago and now stopped eating those too. He really only eats these things; PB&J on wheat, pancakes, fruit pouches, yogurt, crackers, pretzels, cheerios or cereal, cheese pizza, hash browns (French fries), goldfish, milk, bagels, and croissants. ALL BREAD related items besides the fruit pouches/yogurt. I am seriously embarrassed because I did not raise him to eat like this and we offer a ton of choices that he constantly refuses. Is this a phase? Any suggestions on how to get him to like more options again?

My almost two year old is teething some molars and refuses to eat anything but frozen berries and pouches. So I’m in the market- organic preferable but not necessary. They seem really expensive but none of my others were really into purred food so I don’t know. What’s a good price for pouches? And where do you get them? Thanks!

DD is going for ear tubes tomorrow. She is only allowed apple juice, water, and gatorade from midnight until after her procedure. We have to be at the hospital at 2:45 and she likely won't go under until 4:00.

Tips on getting through a day without eating??? She ate a big dinner, and we are trying to keep her up later tonight so she sleeps late tomorrow.
