We have three in soccer this year which means there are 3 nights a week where we are at the soccer fields from 4:30-7:30. I’m trying to think of easy dinners I can have ready (or easily reheat) for asap when we get home and am totally blanking. My ideas so far:

Basically any crockpot meal (which I normally don’t love 😬)
Tacos
Soups/chili (is it still soup season?!)
Sloppy joes
Chicken tenderloins for over salad or in wraps

There has to be more, I know people do this all the time 😂 help!

If yes, would you drop me the name/type?

I think I want to get one for DS (almost 5) because his diet isn’t the best and he has those little white dots on his fingernails that could indicate lack of vitamins. Ped has said it’s not necessary but I’m going to ask her again.
Thanks!!

Because I need a little lighthearted conversation this Monday :)

I indulged with my work promotion last week and tried out a subscription box of nurture life. My ultra picky texture-eater with a milk-allergy 5 year old ate a salmon patty on a pretzel bun (all of it!) and later he ate potstickers!

So I bought a whole bag of potstickers and we ate it last night as a family meal with everyone eating the same thing! I wasn't a short-order cook! Hallelujah!

What have your kids eaten recently that has surprised you?

I’m curious if there’s a relationship between how kids take to early feeding and their tendencies as they age. DS1 struggled with the introduction to solids and it took a while before he would eat well. Then he did for a while and was generally unpicky until 3 or so and has been getting increasingly picky over time. DS2 on the other hand took to solids like a champ and still eats anything and everything (except tomatoes 🤷🏼‍♀️). Now my daughter is starting solids and I can’t help but wonder what will happen with her. I’m curious if others saw a similar pattern with their kids. Allowing multiple votes for multiple kids

I want to start involving my kids in cooking more often and I was hoping this could be a place where we could share recipes that work well for cooking with kids. Ideally the recipes would have steps that kids can do independently or with some minimal guidance, I think - but I 'm curious what works for everyone else.

I'm starting to wonder if my son's picky eating has reached the point that we need to seek professional help. I'm interested in other ladies' opinions, advice, commiseration.

DS1 used to be a great eater up until some point in his 2s. He increasingly got more and more picky but my reading suggested this was totally normal for this age. We followed all the advice for encouraging healthy eating habits. We don't force him to eat, or bribe him. He's able to eat as much or as little as he wants. We've been doing this for a while and his growth has stayed on the curve so while he doesn't eat much a lot of the time, he's still growing.

However, his picky eating keeps getting worse. And more and more previously loved foods are now on the no-go list. The most recent include yogurt, grapes, and baby carrots. I think it's driving me nuts in particular because I am responsible for packing his lunch and snacks now that he's in Kindergarten, whereas school provided his lunch at daycare/preschool. So now I feel like I'm buying things specifically for him to have at lunch and it's just getting thrown away. It didn't bother me much when daycare would say "he only ate a single baby carrot at lunch today" but it does bother me that he says "oh that yogurt I loved and you bought a 10 pack of...no, I won't eat that anymore"

So I guess my question is - is this an extreme picky eating that needs some professional help? Or is this more of a 'me' issue that's arising because of school lunches and I need to just let it go? Maybe it's a control issue on his part?

Is anyone else following Ellyn Satter’s philosophy for meal time? How is it going? Do you follow it exactly or make some modifications?

Backstory: We started it when my oldest started to be a picky eater and mealtimes were a battle. Everyday was an epic meltdown of how many bites before dessert and it drove me nuts. For a year and a half now we’ve been doing Ellyn Satter and pretty much exactly as she recommends. So we don’t ask they he take a single bite of anything and we often serve dessert with the meal instead of at the end. He can have as much as he wants of the options on the table. Over time my son's picky eating has only gotten worse but mealtime at least is fairly pleasant. I’m fine with it as I do believe that trying more things will come with time and having positive feelings about mealtime is good for the whole family. But today my husband lost it and said he doesn’t want to do this approach anymore. He tried to get DS to finish a small helping of salad before he could have more chips and it was back to meltdowns, whining and crying - everything I want to avoid.

I feel like we need to get back on the same page regarding mealtime strategy and so I was wondering what other people’s experience with this approach are. And if you followed it to the rule or with your own adaptations.

I find it hilarious how much more my 12mo eats than my 4yo. I know it’s normal but how does it work??? He’s twice her weight and he always seems to eat as little as possible. Meanwhile she eats like it’s her last meal and hasn’t gained in 4 months (just growing into her delightful baby chub).

My 7yo started eating better around 6 I think so I know it will change but what is it with toddlers/preschoolers? :silly:

I'd love to hear from everyone what your table manner rules are and how you enforce them. Not food-specific rules like trying everything or eating certain amounts, but behaviors. Like what happens if they can't sit still, or if they want to leave before everyone's done? How is it different at restaurants vs at home?

I ask because we never really had a good handle on it and then this past month our kitchen has been under renovations and meals have become so hectic and everything's gotten worse. When we go back to eating at our regular table in (please please please) a week or so, I'd like to have a plan in place to really start fresh.

Little R is 7 months old and her eating habits have been changing. She used to chug her bottles (weekdays when I'm at work) and breastfed like a champ. Now she's refusing more than a few ounces in a bottle and sometimes (like first thing in the morning) ignores my offered breast.

She's eating some regular food (most ends up on her/in the dog's belly) and wakes 1-2x/night still and will eat then, but not consistently.

Is this considered a bottle strike? A phase she is going through? Suggestions?

So my almost one year old constantly throws food off her high chair. At first, it was mostly bc she likes to watch the dog eat what she dropped but now she does it at almost every meal even if the dog is not around. The exception is if she’s starving then she just eats with minimal dropping (so it’s not a coordination issue). How do I get her to stop thinking dropping food is funny or an appropriate way to handle things if she’s not hungry or frustrated? Saying no doesn’t help and even if I try to just put small portions down for her, she’ll toss it immediately. I know it’ll get easier as she learns more language and can express herself better but we’re awhile away from that!

DS will turn 1 in about 2 weeks. We have his 1 year appointment in 3 weeks . I know my Doctor will recommend what to do, but I wanted to hear how other mama's handled it as well.

DS currently drinks about 20oz formula throughout the day, 3 meals (sometimes eats a lot, other times not as interested) and random snacks. He drinks from a bottle SO SLOWLY and always has. He typically will chug 4oz right when he wakes up and another 2-4oz before 1st nap. The rest of the day, he typically only takes 1-3oz at a time and then gets distracted and wants to play. He'll want more like an hour later. I am home with him and it's not really a big deal in my eyes. He's just a snacker :silly:

How did you go about starting cow's milk and stopping bottles? Slowly? Switch to milk first? Switch to sippy cup first? Switch one bottle at a time? Cold turkey? I'm so confused as to how to go about this. Any advice?

Hi all - I searched the archives but haven't seen much about older picky eaters and am hoping there might be some advice (or commisseration!) out there on the boards.

My daughter is about 5.5 yrs old and has a long history of picky eating. When we started out with solids, she ate an awesome variety of foods. But after about 18 months they dwindled one-by-one. We had a pretty okay pattern for a while with a decent selection but have recently been truly struggling with getting her to eat anything at all.

We've brought this up with her pediatrician every year at her well visits and her advice has always been to provide the nutritious food she will eat and try not to fight about it since it seems not to be a sensory issue but more of a control point. We offer her new foods often, she helps in the kitchen (but then won't eat it), and regularly declares foods she's eaten for years off-limits. She won't even eat the unhealthy foods that most kids would love to be offered!

Last night she had one bite of macaroni and cheese, which she picked from her dinner options, spit it back out into her bowl and said she was too tired for dinner and just wanted to go to bed. The night before she declared she doesn't like chicken nuggets anymore after eating one off her plate and leaving the rest. Then this morning she resisted breakfast and barely ate any of her waffle and milk before school.

We were hoping starting school would help her see other kids eating different foods and entice her to try things - no dice. Do I take her to the doctor? Do we just switch gears entirely and give her what we are making ourselves and she can eat it or not? I'm honestly afraid she will just choose to not eat anything rather than try something new or even eat her stapes at this point. Or continue trying to get nutrition into her however we can by offering the things we know she has liked before and not worrying about it if she decides not to eat.

Thanks for listening and any advice you might have!

Over the holiday break our whole family got a stomach bug, including the 15 month old. Prior to this she was a champion eater (eating ridiculous portions, and throwing a fit if she didn't get to eat every single thing the rest of us had). She last threw up on Friday afternoon (after she'd been fine for 24 hrs, but I stupidly gave her milk right before laying down), though she started having runny diapers again on Monday night (similar to when she teethes, so I suspect that could be at play, too). But for a day or two after her illness, I fed her BRAT foods and some baby food while her system got back to normal. Now she's chucking her old favorites (meatballs! pasta! cheerios!) on the floor and screaming, turning her head, hitting us, etc., if we try to give them to her. She only wants fruit, cheese, or purees.

Anyone have an experience like this before? Should I assume she still doesn't feel well?

I'm thinking I need to just muscle through and move on if she won't eat what's served (obviously making sure there is SOMETHING she likes at each meal, but not giving in and serving only what she wants). She's pulling the same trick with water - she had pedialyte while sick, and now she clearly would prefer that to plain water.

Apologies if I sound crazy or cold - I know it sounds harsh to say about such a young kid, but she's EXTREMELY stubborn, and I'm a little concerned she's pulling this behavior to get what she wants, and I don't want that to become habit. If I thought she still felt rotten, I'd be more inclined to just feed her the baby food.

My kids are obsessed with the Bamba peanut snacks and we always have to order them from Amazon. However this morning at Trader Joe’s I found out that they carry them too now! So excited!

My daughter isn't a huge fan of breakfast (like me!) She loves pancakes and French toast (without Syrup)and turkey sausage. She also likes any kind of fruit. However she's not crazy about eggs or oatmeal. I would love to keep expanding her pallet but I'm running out of ideas. Cream of wheat was not high on her list either! Would love to hear some ideas of things that you offer your one-year-old for breakfast! Thanks!

By default, I have to give my baby girl cows milk by the middle of this week since my freezer stash is depleted and I can't pump enough anymore. How did you switch to cow milk? And did you heat up the cow milk? If so, how? Put a bottle in the bottle warmer? I want to use the como tomo bottles. This all seems foreign to me since I used the Kiinde bottle system for my girl so never used anything other than bags. Thanks for any advice!

At what age did you start transitioning? I'm started to pump less and less milk, LO is 10 months old, and I don't want try to transition to formula, just to transition to cows milk in two months. I was thinking of mixing an ounce or two of cow's milk with my breast milk for daycare, anyone do this at 10 months?

Does anyone have any recipe suggestions for meals that even super picky kids will eat? My 5 year is super picky and I struggle to get him to eat anything other than a short list of items (pizza, pb&j, hotdogs, pasta, bagels, etc.). With a lot of coaxing, we usually succeed in getting him to try what we are preparing for dinner and he will take a tiny bite and promptly announce that he doesn't like it (and then we usually cave and give him a banana or a yogurt tube - I literally can't even get him to eat a dinner roll!). I've probably done plenty of things wrong that brought us to this point but I'm just wondering if anyone has found any great, healthy recipes that the whole family eats (that must include your picky eaters!). Thanks!

What in general is your go-to breakfast for your kids? Do you cook a full meal every day? Or do cereal? Grab and go? Do you do the same every day or is it different each day?

What's on LO's menu this week, or what are favorites that you often keep on standby? Clearly I'm in need of some inspiration...there are only so many times I can serve the same thing on repeat!

I have written a few other posts over the last week in reference to my 11 month old daughter. In the last two weeks she has barely wanted any bottles, but this week she started not wanting a majority of her solids. Prior to this she had a very hearty appetite and would eat everything we gave her. Now she will initially chew on some food and then spit it out. I finally broke down and took her to the doctor yesterday and they said everything looked fine and they didn't even feel that she was actively teething in the sense that there were any teeth getting ready to pop through.
For example, she used to eat 2 mini pancakes, a turkey sausage link and half of a pair for breakfast and all she would eat this morning is the two pancakes. She would chew on the sausage and then spit it out. I am an FTM and I am so stressed out. She had only about 6 ounces of formula today and anywhere from 2 to 3 ounces of water and a few sips of juice. She is otherwise happy and full of energy and her sleep has not been affected thus far. She has had 2 BM's and three additional wet diapers today and over the last week has not had less than five wet diapers and 24 hours. She does sleep through the night. Has anyone else ever experience this food regression? Any helpful hints? Ps- she weighed 18.6 pounds at the pediatrician and moved from the 14th percentile to the 35th percentile in the last two months. Thanks!
