Well, my glucose tolerance test was today. And I failed kinda spectacularly... Anyone ever have GD? I was looking at some apps to track everything. Wondering if anyone has a suggestion. Thanks!

If you had GD with your first pregnancy did you have it with your second (or subsequent) pregnancies?

I was a pretty mild gestational diabetic with my first (very easily diet controlled), and I'm just assuming I'll fail again this pregnancy, but I thought I'd put it out there for a pole to see what happened to others.

This is my second GD pregnancy. My first I was so easily diet controlled and this one my post-meals are fine but fasting numbers are consistently in the 120s. They started me on 500mg of metformin and that dosage feels really low. Yesterday my number was 110 and today it was back up to 120. Has anyone had 500mg work for fasting numbers this high?

I found out at my doctor's appointment this afternoon that I failed the 1-hour GD test (below 140 is passing and I got a 144). So I am pretty bummed! I am also pretty surprised--I am not overweight, eat relatively healthy (though I am going to be a biatch if I can't have ice cream for 3 months). I am taking the 3-hour test on Monday. Did anyone else fail the 1-hour test but pass the 3-hour?

Is an initial 2-hour glucose test standard? I went for my glucose tolerance test this morning and it was a 2-hour test. One blood draw, drink nasty juice, next blood draw an hour later, followed by a third blood draw an hour after that. For my first pregnancy, I only had a 1-hour test. Anyone have an initial 2-hour test? Is it because I'm in the "advanced maternal" age group now that I had to have 2-hour as opposed to 1-hour? Just curious if anyone else had a 2-hour test!

Did you have any warning signs? I'm so thirsty (25 weeks) ... like, SO THIRSTY all of the time. All of my urine tests have been normal, and my GD test isn't for 2 more weeks. Not sure why I'm fixated on this right now (I am slightly overweight, but didn't have GD last pregnancy). Just curious if anyone had a feeling they would be diagnosed.

*edited: I drink at least 80-100 oz of water a day.

I had my 1 hr glucose screen on Friday at 4:15pm, and I found out I failed it by 1 measly point (140/139). One of the nurses called today and told me I need to take the 3 hour test (of course it was not my favorite nurse. Her attitude rubs me the wrong way and makes me feel crappy about myself, so that didn't help the situation), and I pushed back because I was pretty upset. I understand that it's very important to diagnose GD. I also think that 1 point is a little ridiculous, and that doing the test so late in the day helped set me up to fail. I don't have a babysitter for my toddler (family is all 2 hours away) and my husband can't take time off of work, so I asked if there are any other options (I offered to just test my levels and adjust my diet), and I haven't heard back. I have a feeling they're going to say "nope, too bad for you."

Anyone have a similar experience and advice or suggestions?

Gaaah! I'm so frustrated with the Maternal Fetal Medicine I go to. For a bit of background, my first baby was 8#3 and measured big up until 36 weeks. I'm 32 weeks with second baby, and he's measuring big also. The difference is I declined the 1st Tri abnormalities test with first baby, so I never put myself on MFM's radar. I got the test with baby #2 and that resulted in me using MFM for my anatomy scan also where they told me they'd be surprised if I didn't have GD because of how big the baby is.

I watched the u/s tech measure the baby, and his femur, head, and length are all measuring big, but then they tell me he's only big in the abdomen because I eat too much. I've had all day morning sickness this entire pregnancy, and I know I don't eat too much. I also exercised 3-4x a week up until 30 weeks when I got uncomfortable.

My midwife sent me for the 1-hour glucose screening at 30 weeks. I had lunch right before, since its a non-fasting test, and I passed with a level of 114. We decided this was great, but when I had to go back to MFM (at the request of MFM to recheck the size) the baby still measured tall and large, and they are still convinced I have GD even though I passed the 1-hour. I declined a 3-hour and explained that I can see the baby is measuring large all over, not just the abdomen. The dr. made a tactless remark about how its not up to him what risks people want to take with their own children and compared it to not putting my kids in carseats. I left happy to be done with them, but he called my birth center and told them I was high risk, most definitely have GD, and he recommends a scheduled c/s because the baby is too big.

Now my birth center's hands are tied liability-wise and they need me to do the 3-hr just to rule it out completely. Am I in the twilight zone? Why are they looking at a baby that measures 2 weeks ahead every where and telling me it's carrying all the extra weight in the abdomen? Why do I have a decent blood sugar at 30 weeks, but still "most definitely" have gestational diabetes?

I'm sorry this is more of a rant. I needed to get it off my chest. Has anyone else been in the same boat or had MFM not let up on them? Has anyone passed the 1-hr but failed the 3-hr?

I am getting very frustrated with my OB doctor and need some outside perspective.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 14 weeks. This is my 3rd pregnancy but my 1st time with gd. I have been monitoring my blood sugar for 3.5 weeks now and my numbers are good after eating but my fasting number is always very high. It is supposed to be under 95 and it is between 105 and 120 everyday. I've tried adjusting my evening snack and haven't had any success with bringing the number below 105.

I called my OB and left a message with the nurse Thursday reporting this and asking what I should do since I don't have an appointment for another 2 weeks. It is now Monday and I still haven't gotten a return call. Honestly I don't know how serious my numbers are but I am getting pretty pissed that nobody has called me back. I know that my doctor's long-time nurse left and he was hiring someone new but in the past I have always had a call back within 24 hours at the most about any questions.

I was already very frustrated with some other things that have happened at my appointments lately so I don't know if that is coloring my perspective on this. But I'm wondering if you had gestational diabetes, how closely did your doctor monitor you? Would you consider this a big deal?

I got the results of a bunch of blood work yesterday and they said my glucose was high at 100 on a non-fasting blood test. The cutoff was 99. I'm extremely frustrated because I had eaten lunch about an hour and a half before they drew the blood and I just don't see how 100 is high. It was a random blood glucose test and I thought the range for that test was up to 120 or 140. I feel like they are adding a ton of extra stress to my life for no reason at all.

I thought they were making such a big deal about it because my dad is a type 2 diabetic, but apparently it's because my body's blood sugar went up (like it's supposed to!) after I ate. Does anyone else's dr go by this stupid range?

background: I'm "at risk" for insulin resistance. I failed the one-hour test but wasn't able to complete the 3-hour one, so my OB had me test my sugars for two weeks. After those numbers came back OK, she is having me test my fasting count and one hour after meals twice a week to stay on top of it.

Anyway.

Sometimes I notice that my machine can give me different readings. Once it happend three times, so I just wrote down an "average".

This morning my first reading for fasting was 96 which was super high for me. I tried a different finger (w/ different strip) and it said 88. Which is more normal for me. the mid-upper 80s range.

Anyway, does this happen to anyone else? I use the Freestyle Lite

I always thought it was done with every mother for every pregnancy, but I just discovered yesterday at my midwife appointment that I won't be tested for it this time. The risk factors they look for are previous history of GD, family history of diabetes type I or II, and above normal BMI (ETA: and LGA babies - I knew there was one more risk factor I was forgetting!). I don't have any of those risk factors so I won't be tested. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy to forgo that fun test, it just surprised me.

With DD1, four years ago now, I had the one hour glucose challenge. With DD2, nearly two years ago, they no longer did the one hour test and everyone did the two hour test as a standard. Both of those were in Australia. I'm in England now and it's not a recommended test for everyone. Who knew?!

What is it like where you are? Do/did you get tested with every pregnancy, even if you have no risk factors? What would you prefer to do? I'm comfortable not having it done as I would truly be surprised if I developed it now, with our third baby, but I realise others may not be comfortable with that.

ETA: sorry, post went up before I finished the poll - corrected now!

So I got sick during the 3 hour glucose test so they are having me use a diabetic kit to test my sugars at home for two weeks. I test fasting, then every hour between meals. I’m not to change my diet because they want to see how my body reacts to foods I eat normally. These were the numbers on a GD sheet that they gave me for healthy blood sugars:

Less than 90 mg/dl before meals (fasting)
Less than 140mg 1 hour after meals
Less than 120mg 2 hours after meals

These are my numbers for the past 7 days:
Fasting B	L	D
83 116 114	104
89 ? ? 104
84 125	108	117
80 126	93	124
79 97 131	110
93 110 111 95 (pizza for dinner)
95

I feel like my numbers are good except for this morning and yesterday morning. I’m doing this for another week but I’m just worried that these past two “fasting” readings will get me a GD diagnosis? I mean, I have another week left of testing and I know more readings will give more info, but I’m just slightly panicking today/right now. My fasting number this morning was 95, although we had pizza last night, and I read that pizza affects you for even days afterwards. That doesn’t explain Thursday’s fasting number of 93, where I had corn and chicken homemade chowder the night before though. I don’t even know what I’m asking… I guess “what do you think?” Do you think these past two mornings’ fasting GD be the reason for a GD diagnosis? This is a silly question I know, because I see the OB next week. But you know how it is…

I failed the 1-hour glucose test, so they had me come in this week for the 3-hour test. I went in with some reading and my laptop, ready to get some work done for my class, with an "I got this" attitude, since I have never really dealt with the typical morning sickness/nausea/vomiting. I wasn't even hungry from fasting.

HA. About 5 minutes away from the first one-hour mark, I suddenly felt very light-headed and broke out in a cold sweat, and really thought I was going to pass out. Then BAM I started puking into a trash can. Thank goodness they put me in a separate waiting room! So they had to cancel the whole test because they wouldn't be able to trust the results. I've read other posts where as long as it was held down for 20 minutes they continue, but they refused to do that with me. Very annoying since it was a big production taking this block of time off.

Anyway, I asked my OB if there was an alternative plan for me, and they had me come in today for a blood sugar testing kit that I have to use for 2 weeks. I just test once in the morning (fasting), and one hour after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (They gave me numbers to aim for too). So far for my first two readings, the numbers have been promising! THey're hopeful that this means I'll be cleared for GD. (The needle is quick, you don't see it, and barely feel it.)

In case others go through having to cancel the test due to getting sick/puking, the technician at the lab also told me that sometimes patients are given certain foods with same glucose value instead of the glucose drink for the test, too. And obviously patients go through their OBs for this, but just another option out there.

Did anyone else's test need to get canceled due to getting sick? I feel like I'm the only weakling! Oh and the entire rest of the day I felt nauseous and dizzy and mostly just laid down! I'm so lame.

I'm going in for my glucose test today. We are hoping for a med-free vaginal birth, but know a GD diagnosis increases the chance of cesearean.

I have to go in for my three hour test tomorrow (failed the one hour with a 154/8.5 so middle of the road failure).

I'm pretty bummed -- I passed last pregnancy but have been eating like crap with the holidays which I'm sure doesn't help!

Two questions: if you failed the one hour and passed the 3 -- what was your failing test number? I know there is no exact correlation just curious.

If you have / had a gestational diabetes diagnosis were you allowed to go late with your pregnancy? My son was induced 10 days late and I was REALLY hoping for spontaneous labor. My induction wasn't bad (pretty smooth actually), but I would like to early labor at home vs. on my back in a hospital fiddling with heart rate monitors. This with all the extra appointments is what would bum me out the most. I can't imagine baby 2.0 coming on time (I think I'm a slow cooker), but I was hoping for spontaneous labor before another induction.

Thanks!

I saw my consultant obstetrician for the first time yesterday. I was referred (from midwife care) because I have GD again and also because my last baby was "small for dates" at 5lb 15oz, 39 weeks.

I have spent the last 2.5 yrs fully believing that E was induced far too early - my GD was impeccably controlled. But my new OB accessed my records today and told me that the decision was made to induce me because the baby wasn't growing. With GD, she told me, the placenta sometimes packs up. For some reason, my previous OB didn't tell me, she simply said it was protocol to induce at 38 weeks (and she said that via one of her team - she never actually came into the room herself).

My new OB has prescribed asprin to help the placenta work better and extra growth scans. I will definitely be induced by 38 weeks. My OB said that this would be the preferred option anyway, with my history of rapid birth.

Does anyone have much experience of this? I'm kinda scared - but also super humbled. I've spent all this time blaming my OB for E's weight, when actually she might have saved her life. Whoever heard of GD causing tiny babies as well as large ones?

I thought it was odd that my doctor had me take a glucose test in the first trimester. At my appointment today she told me that I passed and that I would be tested again in my 7th month. I thought this was all weird because I have no risk factors. I went to a different doctor for my last pregnancy and she only tested me once at the beginning of the third trimester.

*poll is for the one hour test. Not if you had to go onto to do the three hour. For example doing the one hour and failing and having to do the three hour doesn't count as being tested twice.*

So I have been dealing with GD for a couple months now. I am used to what I can and cannot eat, my sugar levels have been nearly impossible to control but they have confirmed it isn't my diet since I am pretty strict about it (because of the frustratingly high levels) but now it looks like I might have the right med balance. Problem? I have hit the point in my pregnancy, 36 weeks, when I am ravenous. I eat my meals and snacks and am full and then an hour later, or 3 am, I starving again!!! I am terrified to eat even an almond for fear it will throw off my already precariously balanced numbers. Ugh... How am I doing to make it through one more month of this??? This kid needs to go ahead and make an entrance now.
