My DD barely grew or put on weight between 9 and 12 months and was fairly low on the charts. I was concerned because my DS grew (in both height and weight) like a hulk between those ages. But my ped wasn't concerned and now my DD is 4 and developing/growing just fine.

@josina: I wouldn't worry for now either. They wiggle so much that weight is pretty much the only accurate measurement! K1's head was always big one month and small the next haha! I'd def just bring it up if the doctor doesn't just to get their opinion but I def wouldn't worry just yet! K1 is even more of a peanut than K1 was!

My son has always been around the 80-90th percentile for height.

I forget which checkup this was, but at one point during his first year they measured him as *losing* length.

Their technique for measuring length is ridiculously inaccurate because it depends on baby staying straight. I would not worry about it unless you LO is already in a low percentile.

Height is so hard to measure since babies don’t like staying still. We’ve had a lot of concern about weight, but height is never mentioned. I will also say we’re also doing weight checks to see growth but they never even bother to check height then.

@josina: At her 12 month appt my DD was only up half an inch from her 9 month appt. The doctor didn't even mention it, but I asked about it. She said she wasn't concerned and that the measurements can be pretty inaccurate depending on who does them and how squirmy the kid is. I tried measuring her myself a few days later out of curiosity, I did it twice in a row and got two different heights a half inch apart and both were a little off from what the nurse said. 🤷‍♀️

I’ve also had a kid shrink between appts! It was different doctors so no one mentioned but I put a lot of question marks in the baby book. I actually can’t believe there isn’t a more accurate way to do it that someone has invented!

Both my kids have always had inaccurate height measurements so their percentiles have jumped up and down. Watching the nurses try to measure them in never surprised that it’s not quite accurate. And a half an inch or less can mean a big jump in percentiles at this age.

That said I have two shorties, which is weird to me since I’m pretty tall. But they found their curve and mostly stay on it.

R dropped a bunch of percentiles in height at his 12m appointment. Ped didn't seem concerned (it actually made his height/weight more proportional!) and said could be: mismeasurement, finding his curve (short stature runs in our family), just prior to growth spurt, and/or a medical issue. He goes for 15m checkup in a couple weeks -- I know he has grown based on the fact that he is hitting his head on the fridge door and wasn't previously, but I'm not sure what would indicate referral or not.

Our ped told us the length measurements are super inaccurate until they can stand up and be measured. We actually had an appointment where he shot up off the chart and then "shrunk" at the next appointment. So I really wouldn't worry at this point.

I don't think either of my kids really grew a lot in the 9-12 month gap. They become mobile and start burning so many more calories. I think it's something to be aware of and keep an eye on, but not something to totally freak about yet.

LO2 had a similar stall but it was 12-15 months. He basically didn't grow at all. Pediatrician gave him until 18 months and if he still hadn't grown significantly by then, we were going to have his thyroid checked, etc. He grew enough that we didn't need to intervene but he's still a shortie. He turns 3 this week and is still in 2T clothes. I know it's nearly impossible but try not to worry too much.

We had a similar issue with our first son's height measurements, but his Dr. said it was probably due to inaccurate measuring at the office. It might be something they keep an eye on, but I doubt it's anything to worry about! Good luck:)

So DD's 12 month check up isn't until next week, but I just noticed she hasn't grown, at all, since 9 months. She was 27-1/4" tall at that check-up, and I actually measured her as 27" tall at home for her 12 month board (although I'm sure she didn't shrink). How worried should I be (because you know I am!)?

She was 21" at birth, 23" at 2 months, 26.25" at 6 months, 27.25" at 9 months. (So has gradually dropped percentile, but current height puts her at 2%, down from 25% at 9 months)
Her weight has been around 50%, and has also dropped but not as much. She was 18.1 lbs at 9 months, and is just under 19 lbs now.

I do recall the nurse measuring twice at her 9 month appointment, so I believe there was some concern but it was never voiced to me, and the dr. didn't mention it at all.

Developmentally she seems fine, she's been walking for awhile, waves bye, no words yet other than mom-mom-mom.

Questions I should go in with next week? Anything else I should be looking out for? Anyone have similar stalls in height that were fine?

DD was around 50% height/weight at birth and gradually went down to around 20% for both by age 2 and has stayed there (she's now 4). Honestly I expect her percentiles to get even lower as she ages. DS was 30% weight/10% height at birth and is now still 30% weight but only 1% height at 11 months.

I expect them to both stay small. DH and I are both probably around 10% height for adults so it makes sense for them to be small. I just hope that DS isn't tooo short (my father and brother are both like 5'2" which is crazy short for a man, DH is more like 5'5" which is better).

I think parental stature is a better indicator than first year percentiles. Through six months my son was in the 3rd% for both height and weight so he was a tiny little nugget, but my the pediatrician kept looking at my husband (6'6" 225lbs) and saying "I just don't think this kid is going to stay small......" sure enough, at his 18 month appointment my "little" guy was 75% for weight and 50% for height. His 2 year appointment is next week and I expect the height % to have gone up even more.

There’s no way to tell now. My brother was almost always the smallest in his class (by a fair amount) and very slightly built. He’s still slender but he’s also well over 6’ - - he didn’t really grow until high school, but once he started he didn’t stop! Lol

Opposite of your experience, my LO was an 8 lb newborn turned peanut. Since about 18 months she’s been below 20% for height and around 6% for weight. They just all have their own individual growth curves and “plans”.

@Pollywog: I suspect my brother was like your dh and uncle so I wonder if DS will be too?
@erinbaderin: @muffinsmuffins: I suspect this is what DS will do. I really think he'll stay on the smaller side of things. He eats well and is active, I just think he's small
@PinkElephant: DS does have a vsd and early on the ped said this could cause him to have a higher metabolism
@Chuckles: this is kinda why I'm surprised DS is so low. I am not a small person and DH is BIG, he was over 10 lbs at birth and was always big and our DD is in the 60th for both.
@Mrs. Goose: I'm really trying not to worry, the ped's don't even mention it. So I guess it's ok. I had to specifically ask to confirm it was ok and ped said yes, he's growing on his curve..... so I guess i'll try to put it out of my mind. And like I said I honestly feel like he's in the 30th when I look at him.. LIke he doesn't look small to me. I see that he's not huge but I don't see that he's tiny either. I guess that's kind of why I am always shocked when I see the numbers.

I’m the opposite in that I had a nearly 10 pound baby who became a peanut and is a peanut toddler. I worry about it frequently, less now, since it seems to be her normal, but I still obsess about food consumption from time to time. Just under 15 % for weight and 15 % for height. A generally happy and energetic peanut though and adorable!

My 4 year old was born at 7 lbs 13 oz at 37 weeks but dropped down the curve through the first year or so. He's been consistently around 5-10th percentile for weight and 20th for height since then.

It's all relative, I guess! I wouldn't consider a lot of the weights/heights mentioned on here to be unusually small....but DD3 has just hit the 3rd percentile for weight and 10th for length at 13 months (after being off the charts so far), so I guess that colors my opinion. Interestingly, though she's small, she's by far my chunkiest kid (her length & height percentiles are closest together).

DD1 (who is now 5.5) was born in about 3rd percentile for weight, I think 13th for length....she stayed there for awhile, and gradually started crawling up the curve around 3 years old. Now, while still small, she's something like 13th for weight and somewhere around 30th-40th for height. So while she's still on the small side, I wouldn't consider her a real peanut anymore.

DD2 started equally small, but "caught up" a lot sooner - she's around 25th for weight and 50th for height at 3.5 years. People comment that she looks tall.

ETA: My pediatrician has always said that kids who are off the charts small because they are early, or have a feeding issue, or some other "reason" for their size, catch up a little bit at some point by around 2-3 years (though obviously they're not likely to turn into 90th percentile kids!), but most kids settle into a quartile and stay there, with some fluctuation for growth spurts.

Both my girls were fairly big at birth (just over 8 lbs and 8.5 lbs). Now the 4 year old is roughly 50th for height and weight and the almost 2 year old (8.5 lbs at birth) is a peanut- 15% for height and in the 20% for weight.

I’m fairly tall (5’7”) but didn’t get tall until high school.

My toddler has maintained his percentile (roughly). But my husband was a peanut and is now 6'3. He grew into a tall kid in high school and then continued growing through college. My uncle was also the shortest kid in his class until college where he grew from 5'9 to 6'4
