Hello. I'm 19 1/2 weeks into pregnancy number 4, but have lost the three prior. The doctors have been monitoring my cervical length, and after being stable for a number of weeks, it abruptly dropped today from about 1.3-1.5cm down to ~0.9cm. I've been on vaginal progesterone for about a month, and now I'm going tomorrow for a cerclage. Just wondering if anyone has been through cerclage and what it was like/what their outcomes were. I'm kind of stressing about being awake during the procedure. I wish they would give me something to knock me out, but understand that that would potentially be bad for the baby.

A complete previa was detected at my anatomy scan at 18 weeks and my placenta is still in the same position now at 28.5 weeks. My Dr was hoping it would move before the 3rd tri because it is unlikely to move a lot after that. I am going to have another RCS but there is talk about a possible hysterectomy (if there is also an accreta) and earlier delivery.

Did your placenta end up moving before your delivery? I hope there is still time for me!

So I have to start the Makena / progesterone shots to prevent preterm labor. Planning on starting at 19 weeks or so b/c I'm very low risk but it's a possibility I'll go early (DS was only 36w5d and perfectly healthy, very easy birth but I had PPROM). My OB is having me do the auto-injector which is subcutaneous in the arm as opposed to intramuscular oil shots in the butt/ hip. The auto-injector was released this Feb.
If you took Makena, can you share your experience? Did they work most important? Did baby have any issues? Has anyone tried the auto-injector yet?

My friend has a negative blood type and was sensitized on her last delivery because her midwife was dumb and didn't have her get the RHOGAM shot ever :( She is trying for another baby, and I *think* she met with a MFM to talk over the possibilities. She is a very optimistic person so she is taking it in stride, but I'm pretty intimidated by the thought of Rhesus disease, etc. Does anyone here have experience with this?

I was on here for a while around the time of my second recurrent pregnancy but then needed some time for mental health self care and kind of ghosted... I thought I’d come back and update and maybe seek some support. This community is more active than others I’ve been on for high risk pregnancies etc.

So to recap we have an almost 3yo dd who we conceived easily. Fast forward and when she was 1.5 we started ttc number 2. We had an ear,t mc at 5 weeks and then another at 8 weeks (blighted ovum) that required a d&c. I waited the one month post d&c during which time we say a productive endocrinologist to start exploring what recurrent Mc would involve. We fell pregnant again right away post d&c.

An early ultrasound showed a single baby at 6 weeks and then at 8 weeks we discovered there were two!! It was a complete surprise and shock.

By 14 weeks we saw a specialist mfm and learned that our twins are a super rare kind of identical twin. They split late (any later and would have been conjoined), so are monochorionic (one placenta) and monoamnioic (in the same amniotic sac). Most identical twins are separated by a thin membrane but share a placenta. We don’t have that benefit and they can touch each other and roll all around each other.

This makes the pregnancy extremely high risk. Besides the typical multiples risk (preterm labour, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia), we have the risks of idental twins with shared placentas (twin to twin transfusion syndrome, selective intrauterine growth restriction). We also have the very real risk of cord entanglement and compression.

Virtually All monomamionic (momo) twins will have cords that are completely tangled and the majority have true knots as well. Until 10 years ago the survival rate was 20-50%. Recent intensive monitoring and early cesarean has increased the rate to about 80ish -90ish percent.

I’m 24w now and go 3x a week for non stress tests and ultrasounds. Most moms choose to go inpatient at this time because you’re viable. I’ve decided to wait until outcomes are a bit better (and cause I have a toddler at home), and will go inpatient at 27ish weeks. At this point usually you are on continuous monitoring or multiple times a days to watch for heart rate deceleration that indicate sever cord entanglement.

It’s a mandatory c section (risks are too high with tangled cords for still birth and cord prolapse) by 32 weeks because as they get bigger they cut off blood flow to the cords more and death rate goes up.

I haven’t bought anything yet or done any prep at home because I’m afraid we won’’t be bringing this babie home. Looking for anyone that has had a similar high risk inpatient or otherwise pregnancy. Any tips?

I had my 20 week ultrasound today and was diagnosed with a short cervix (2.3). After speaking with two separate doctors, we’re quite scared. I’ve been prescribed progesterone and told to be on bed rest and to watch for symptoms. They will check in 1 week and know more from there. Does anyone have experience with this that they can share?

I was planning to have a midwife-attended home birth (my 3yo was also born at home). Now I'm looking at a 36-37 week c-section. A high-risk c-section since it is an anterior placenta.

At my 21 week ultrasound, I was told my "placenta is a little bit low" by both the sonographer and the physician reviewing the images. I wasn't watching that part of the scan as baby was breech then and we don't want to know the sex.

I got worried when my midwife reviewed the report with me last week. It said total previa, not low lying. I know that the overwhelming majority of low-lying placentas resolve (90+%) -- so I hadn't thought anything at all of being told mine was low. I also know it is quite rare for true previas to resolve.

I went for my follow-up ultrasound yesterday (30w3d) and I have a marginal previa. The sonographer also pulled the images from the last study -- it was also a marginal previa then (NOT "a little bit low" as I was told verbally, nor a "complete previa" as was in the written report). So there's been no change at all.

I have a repeat scan at 33w3d, but, I'm not feeling hopeful at all. I have (of course) read every study I could access about 3rd-trimester resolution rates of marginal and partial previas. The best numbers are about 30% resolve adequately to allow vaginal delivery. The worst study numbers are less than 10%.

I'm really upset that I spent the last 2+ months thinking I was on track for a home birth when I could have had that time to adjust to the strong possibility of a very different birth. Why didn't the sonographer or the OB at the maternal-fetal medicine practice where I got my scan tell me? Why did my midwifery practice have a report that said "complete previa" for 6+ weeks without talking to me about it??

I should be grateful that I have access to appropriate care and that I can get a c-section rather than face down a high risk of a deadly hemorrhage before or during birth. I should be grateful that I had access to ultrasound at all and the previa wasn't diagnosed because I died delivering. I should be grateful that a scheduled section addresses the fact that we've don't have good backup care for LO and I've been super stressed about what we'll do with him while I'm laboring/birthing. I'm trying to see the silver lining that even the worst case scenario of hysterectomy with the cesarean would cure my adenomyosis and unwanted future fertility.

But right now I'm just really upset. I do not want a hospital birth. I do not want a c-section. I do not want a heightened risk of preterm delivery. I do not want a heightened risk of hemorrhage. I don't want a possible hysterectomy with cesearean. And I'm mad that two of the risk factors for previa are prior miscarriage and advanced maternal age. I would have delivered at a year+ younger and I would already have an 11-month-old if I hadn't had 4 losses before this pregnancy.

I'd much rather get this information from my doctor, but I'm getting the run-around.

I had a blood test done by one of my doctors for something unrelated to my pregnancy. They called to say everything was good, except that my white blood cell count was elevated - 13.3 was the number they gave me.

I'm concerned about this because with my first pregnancy my water broke at 28 weeks - nobody knows why it happened, but the most likely reason is some undiagnosed infection.

So, here I am with elevated white blood cell counts at 24 weeks pregnant, trying to get my OB to call me back and talk to me about it. Her office says she won't talk to me about it until she gets a copy of the lab results and the other doctor's office promised they would fax them over 4 hours ago - however, my OBs office has yet to receive them.

Does anyone know what a WBC of 13.3 even MEANS? How elevated is it? Could it be a natural 2nd trimester elevation? Or is it likely indicative of an infection?

I know that none of you can give me actual doctorly advice - this is just a message board after all - but I figured it can't hurt to ask while I wait. Thanks all.

I am struggling with whether or not to do progesterone injections... I gave birth *very borderline pre-term* with my son at 36+5. (full term is 37 weeks) so technically my OB had to recommend to me to start the Makena progesterone injections weekly starting at 16 weeks. I am already on progesterone vaginally because my progesterone was very low and it helped me get pregnant twice. I tolerate it well.
My hesitation is just that I am wary of meds.... I feel like medication is pushed out without 100% vetting of don't want anything to mess with the wonderful, easy labor I had with DS (ya know, besides being 3 weeks early). Apparently progesterone is safe for baby.
Argg!!! Anyone have advice? Would you do the shots in my situation?

😥 PLEASE HELP, So I’ve been diagnosed with high-risk pregnancy due to not having a thyroid. I was bleeding yesterday it was more red not superheavy but dripped a little. I went to the emergency room they said my cervix is closed but they found a 2.6 hemorrhage on wall. I looked everywhere I don’t even know if that’s a small or medium one. No cramps Some back pain but I’ve have back problems anyway so I don’t know the difference. When I went to the hospital they did the blood test and said my cervix is closed and minimal bleeding. They did a vaginal ultrasound and saw the baby and good heartbeat along with the hemorrhage. I’m home and there are tiny dots of red when I pee. I’m really scared and trying not to stress so I need peace of mind. Has anyone experienced anything like this and has been fine? I have 2 days til I see my ob and really wigging out. PLEASE HELP. 😿

I had it last pregnancy and it took 10 days for results. I’m having similar itching again now at 35.5 weeks and she told me last appt not to mess around if I feel it again. But I’m wondering how long results would take, because if it’s still 10 days I’d be right at 37 weeks which is when they want baby out.

hi y'all! we had a scan at our 24 week appointment today (i'm technically 23w2d) to take a peek at baby girl's heart. they weren't able to get a good picture of the chambers at our a/s, so we got to see her again today. the tech was looking at her umbilical cord, and was showing us the colored bloodflow in the cord when she noticed something was a little off. we were told a little later that i have a velamentous cord insertion. from what i could tell from the u/s the placenta is up high in the uterus and wraps around front to back. i don't think there's any risk for vasa previa, and they didn't mention anything about that being a risk. i've just been consulting dr. google about VCI, and it's sort of freaking me out. the doctor didn't really seem worried, but now i am!

anyone deal with this? anyone have any advice/experience/stories?

I have a good friend who is in the hospital with a high-risk baby - they were originally going to induce her early but the baby is looking better so she's just been in the hospital for frequent monitoring. The hospital with the highest level NICU is far enough away from her home that she isn't able to see her husband or daughter very often. She's free to move about the hospital with just an IV port, but can't really leave the premises.

Any suggestions for small gifts I could bring to help her pass the time, or help her feel better about the time spent in the hospital? She already has puzzles and an adult coloring book.

I'm 37+3, was seen at l+d yesterday for itching, which is relatively mild but was on my feet for a while on sat pm. I can mostly ignore it at this point but it is there, mostly arms/legs/belly at this point. Midwives and docs were concerened about cholestasis, all checks on baby and my labs looked good, including liver, but the diagnostic bile salt/acid test takes longer so we are waiting on that one. Induction was discussed but I really want to go into labor on my own and given I don't have a diagnosis yet they opted to send me home and wait for the results, with extra nst and for me to pay attention to how I'm feeling.

Of course now I'm second guessing my decision and worrying about baby.

Curious if there's anyone on here who had cholestasis, particularly with diagnosis this late?

At my ultrasound today, my cervix measured shorter than it did last week. The doctor says I now fall into the category of getting a cerclage to keep it from shortening further. Anyone have one done? Thoughts? Advice?

It's me again, with another question about SCH. I saw my RE today, and it really opened more questions than it resolved. He started by saying he was very concerned about the SCH causing miscarriage (according to the ultrasound report, it was moderately sized). Then he said to take it easy. When I asked what that means his response was "I don't know, if you want, I can write you a note to get out of work." So I asked if full bed rest would be helpful, and his response was "I don't want you lying down too much, and your baby is two millimeters, seriously I don't know what you can actually do. Just stay hydrated." Then he pulled up the images and said "actually, it looks small, who knows, it looks really small here. So maybe it's pretty small. Before 24 weeks, we know nothing and can do nothing, so who knows, really it's whatever."

I think he's just being honest that there's no conclusive scientific evidence about how to heal an SCH, so he has no basis to make a recommendation, but I'm still at a bit of a loss for what to do. I don't have a follow up for two weeks (and the fetal heart rate also wasn't looking good today, so that's another problem). I'm supposed to travel for work in a week and a half. It's a trip I've made dozens of times and don't find tiring, but it does involving flying. I'm at a bit of a loss for whether I should tell work and not go or just keep trying to take it easy. Just curious what other's experiences have been...

I recently read that because Materni21 runs its tests through Quest Diagnostics, if you create an account with Quest, Quest notifies you when your test results are in. Did you use this feature if you got the Maternii21 test? Did you find out any earlier than your doctor's office?

I signed up for it and of course got notification that my test results were in....but it turns out it was the results of a urine culture. False alarm!

If so, why? And how was your pregnancy different because of it?

I was technically high risk for both because I was over 35. But I didn't have any extra monitoring (other than the blood test for genetic disorders).

On Friday I was in a bit of a fender-bender, at 27+3 weeks. Thankfully it was very minor, but still landed me in OB triage for 6 hours for monitoring & ultrasounds. During this time they detected a fetal arrhythmia. They assured me that "most fetal arrhythmias turn out to be nothing", but to follow up with my doctor. I wasn't too stressed- they were pretty calm about it, and I figured if it was a real big deal, they would have had me see a specialist while I was there. The heartbeat is usually around 140 which is right where it should be. So at least it's not really high or low, just a bit irregular. Every 6-8 beats it sounds a bit weird and gets off-rhythm.

Sooo.... I had my follow up with my OB today. He did the doppler and the arrhythmia was much, much more noticeable. My OB leans more on the "Let's not freak out and do every test" side, so instead of referring directly to a fetal cardiologist for an echo (which seems to be the standard); he referred me to the perinatalogist center that did my anatomy scan, for a Level II ultrasound of the heart. Then we'll have a consult immediately thereafter.

For the first time, I started to truly worry this could actually be a big deal. My father has been hospitalized multiple times and has had 2 open-heart surgeries due to arrhythmia.

Please tell me about any experiences you know of with fetal arrhythmia - how it went, how your doctors monitored you, what the birth experience was like, etc.

I am being induced a week from today (if not before) at 37 weeks because although baby'/ heart rate/fluid levels/placental blood flow all look fine, she's sadly just not growing adequately. I've had an amnio, so pretty much all known genetic abnormalities have been ruled out.

My previous DDs were both small - 5 lb 11 oz and 5 lb 14 oz...but we are looking at under 5 lbs with this baby (they're currently guessing she's around 4 lbs 3 oz, and doubt that she'll gain the average half lb per week typical at this stage before I'm induced).

I have no idea what to expect and am hoping for stories. If you had an IUGR/SGA baby, and are willing to share your experience:

At what gestation was she/he born?
How much did she/he weigh?
Did she/he do NICU time?
How is she/he doing now?

Thanks so much!

I was wondering if anybody here has had long term complications after having pre-e, or pregnancy in general. Before being pregnant my Bp always stayed in the 120/70 range, and at 34 weeks my Bp jumped up to 190/110 so by 36 weeks I was having an induction. Even after delivery my Bp has stayed 130/80. It seems possible I may be on Bp medicine for my life. Now I just made an apt. With my general physician to have my hormone levels and thyroid Checked. I feel like my body will never be right again, and that pregnancy may have damaged it for life. I just was looking to hear from other ladies that had complications that outlasted pregnancy and how awesome your doing  . I need a little picker upper

Has anyone got any success stories with short cervix, bed rest or early bubs?

Here's how today went down...

Had my usual OB appt today (29+3) and unfortunately things have gone haywire. Scan showed healthy baby but a short cervix. It's gone from 3mm, long & closed ... To 0.7cm and completely open and funnelled.

OB immediately shipped me off to have a formal scan which showed the same - nice average baby with good size and blood flow, but full fluid/membrane funneling and short cervix.

I'm in hospital now and having CTG monitoring, steroids, antibiotics & contraction stopping drugs - and it's just a matter of waiting and resting and seeing what happens. Any signs of labour or waters going/full contractions, I have to be transferred to the big public hospital which has a big NICU unit.

OB wants me here for 18 days until we hit 32 weeks & if holding, I'll go to home bed rest. Looks like getting to 36 weeks (which is when Georgia arrived spontaneously) will be the dream.

Lucky she's cute, huh?

Does anyone have any suggestions for an appropriate thank you gift for my high-risk OB and her practice?

I successfully delivered a beautiful baby boy on July 27th after losing a pregnancy last year at 23 weeks (TFMR, fatal CPAM), and my high-risk OB who guided us through last year's devastating experience was amazing and incredibly supportive throughout this year's emotional pregnancy.

I want to bring some sort of thank you gift to my 6 week check up for my doctor, her assistant, and the two ultrasound technicians at this practice who did so much to alleviate our anxiety, who celebrated this pregnancy, and who provided excellent pre-natal care. Usual thank you gifts like flowers or giftcards don't seem sufficient, and I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!!

My first trimester screening results appeared in my patient portal around 5:30pm yesterday, after my midwives' office closed for the weekend. The screening came back negative for Trisomy 21 (1:550) and Trisomy 18 (1:1100). However, my PAPP-A levels are very low at .26 MoM. I made the very poor choice to Google low PAPP-A, which returned lots of horrible statistical correlations with second trimester miscarriage, stillbirth, IUGR, and preeclampsia.

Does anyone have personal experience with low PAPP-A? Did you have any additional tests or scans? Were there any complications with your pregnancy?
