@togetherthroughlife: haha! DH and I always stop at Starbucks for ourselves when we look at lights, but I never thought about cocoa for DD since she doesn't like hot drinks. Bringing a room temperature hot chocolate from home in a straw cup is a great idea though! She'd get a kick out of wearing PJs in the car too!

Thanks for all the ideas! 🎄🎅

@erinbaderin: Another similar one with the books is just getting them from the library! :)

Something my daughter has enjoyed before is a big piece of felt shaped like a Christmas tree on the wall, with felt shapes that she can decorate it with like ornaments! :)

Driving around to look at lights is good…a pit stop at Starbucks for a special hot cocoa (or bring some from home!) makes it extra fun! We make it “warm” cocoa instead of hot and put it in a sippy when we do that. We wear PJs too. :)

I'm putting together our family's advent calendar with activities and one thing we usually do is have snowman shaped pancakes for dinner one night.
Also, I will always, always recommend this online visit with Santa: https://outschool.com/classes/small-group-gathering-with-santa-claus-from-the-north-pole-z7uynX94

He is amazing! Like one of those guys where you have to ask, do you really think you're Santa? You provide info about your child over email ahead of time, and he uses that info to act as if he really knows your child. So, for example, he would ask my son, "So DS, how are your pets Jack and Pancetta doing? I hear you've been taking drumming lessons." And it blew my kids' minds. It looks like there's almost no available dates and times, but he usually adds them over December, so keep checking back.

Some things we've done - I bought a bunch of secondhand Christmas books, wrapped them, and we did a book advent calendar - unwrapped one every night and read it before bed.

Paper chains are fun, and you can make a countdown to Christmas with them.

Go to the store and let her pick out something to donate to a toy drive.

I'll have to look into this puffy paint. I haven't heard of that before. It sounds right up her alley.

A few that come to mind:
- make paper snowflakes and decorate your windows or ceiling
- pick a few books she's outgrown and donate them
- read Christmas/winter-themed books
- Holiday/winter crafts like puffy snow paint or make your own ornaments
- Write a letter to Santa together

This is the first year my 4 year old daughter is getting really excited about Christmas and really understanding the season more. I would love to make the month leading up to Christmas more fun by doing some different activities. Any ideas on things we could do together that are more simple? Or simple crafts? So far on my list:

-Baking/Decorating Cookies (definitely not simple, but we do this anyway)
-Decorate Gingerbread houses
-Drive around to look at Christmas lights in our neighborhood
-Watch the classic Christmas TV specials

I also have a sensory bin from previous years with green and red rice. And I already helped her decorate her room a little bit and we have lots of holiday books to read.

@catgirl: oh no!! I'm dreading the day when they figure out the truth. I'm happy she's still excited about it though, and the scavenger hunt sound fun!!

We went to an egg hunt yesterday and my 4 year old told me that the Easter Bunny we were in line to see was just a person in a costume. She still thinks there is an Easter Bunny- that just wasn't him though. She was pretty mad about the fake one, but I was happy I quieted her down so other kids didn't hear her! 😆

DD is 8 and just learned two weeks ago that the Easter Bunny (and Santa and tooth fairy) aren’t real 😭. She requested a scavenger hunt to find her basket this year. Since it’s hard to see in her basket, it has: bubbles, gel pens, notebooks, a sticker book, unicorn pencil pouch, a liquid motion bubbler, books, butterfly hair clips, Rubik’s cube, welly ice cream bandages, a funnel sand toy, and gem art kit, and Candy.

Let's see your Easter baskets! I love seeing what other people put together and I try to get ideas for future holiday or birthday gifts!

I have a newly 4 year old and a 9 month old. We are deep into Tonies and Slumberkins, so those were our big things along with a couple books each. Baby also got some fun new teether/sensory things. I also got some Sarah's Silks for the first time. I think it's a toss up whether they'll get played with or not.... I'm pretty excited for the kids to get the baskets though!

@pachamama: That looks awesome, great idea! And love that the 4 year old wanted a sewing machine!
@Bluemasonjar: I got DS a Pokemon gameboard last year hoping that he'd actually want to play the game... we ended up using it for decoration in his room. Hope you have better luck!

We do our lists right after Thanksgiving so I have plenty of time to shop, and no changes once they give it to Santa.

DS (7) asked for a tablet so we are finally giving in and got him an Amazon Fire Tablet and a binder for his Pokemon cards. That is all he asked for. We are also giving him a deck of Pokemon cards and a play mat so he can learn the game in addition to collecting them.

My 4 year old DS keeps changing his list slightly and told Santa he wants a bunch of things but we have focused on a few things to help set his expectations for Christmas morning. He is getting a new dump truck (he asked for one despite us having 2 already), a remote controlled spider (he is getting a Hexbug remote controlled dragon instead) and a Pokemon keychain like his brother's.

I start asking for their wish lists early and then we repeat them a few times before going to see Santa about 2 weeks before Christmas so there aren't any surprises.

My 4 year old boy wants a sewing machine, so I got him that so we can learn together. I got him a play veterinarian kit so maybe he will stop dragging my cats around, a craft organizer because he loves small collectible things, and a travel pillow for our trip to Europe.
My 7 year old wants a "2 seater small plane/ spaceship he can actually fly in. Santa listens to me, he really does!" :silly: I got them wooden bows and arrows, a tackle box, a Blink camera so we can spy on the deer at our cabin up north, a flight suit costume and this cool ride on toy his friend has, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09M2342B9/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A3ULD558QQYTPY&th=1

DS(9) changed his mind several times, and of course settled on the thing that doesn't seem to exist. He wants a big stuffed animal porg (a silly star wars character). They have ones that are like 6 inches tall, but nothing bigger. Hopefully that will be fine, but he definitely emphasized the "big" part. DD(3) wants a stuffed animal, which we're getting her and it's fine, but she already has a million, so I do wish she'd picked something else but she couldn't be distracted from it.

DD (7) tells everyone who asks that she wants roller skates or roller blades, which she is NOT getting (I don't know what got the idea in her head, but realistically, we have nowhere for her to skate with any regularity). We don't do Santa presents, but I am hoping that she will be content on Christmas morning with a few other gross motor toys, and maybe some hand-me-down ice skates (she will be taking lessons in the new year).

DS (4.5) asked for a train (OMG we have so many trains, spiderman toys, and christmas socks. DS (3.5) we coached into stuff we already had for him, games and spiderman toys. We also had to coach my four year old otherwise he comes up with things like "a train that transforms into a helicopter but also roars like a dinosaur." Pretty sure he just does that to f*ck with me since I think he knows Santa isn't real.

My kids know Santa only brings stuff that fits in their stockings. My daughter is 7 and knows Santa isn't true (asked at age 6 and I didn't want to lie to her-she didn't care at all) so only my 4 year old believes.

@caitcat: this is a great, more realistic, doctor kit: https://www.lakeshorelearning.com/products/ca/p/GG705/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=performancemaxplay&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxKuOhJHj-wIVA1NyCh3kvgGaEAQYASABEgLhMPD_BwE

My 7 year old daughter is asking Santa for a robotic snake (why?!), a dinosaur stuffed animal, and a dinosaur fossil digging kit. My 5 year old daughter wants an pretend ice cream set, a tent for her favorite stuffed animal, and a "real" doctor kit. She added an extra note in her letter to Santa that the doctor kit should not be plastic. So I'm trying to work that one out. :)

They both put a "mama surprise guinea pig" or something like that on their general holiday wishlists, but I haven't been able to track it down. I'm thinking if they're still into it, I'll look for it for their birthdays after the holiday rush has calmed down. But I kind of bet they'll forget once I can get the holiday toy catalogs out of our house.
