Haven’t been on here much, but looking for some advice. Due March 17 with our 2nd, 39+5. Our first baby came right on 39 weeks. Beginning to get very concerned with what is going on right now with Coronavirus, and just called my doctor to schedule an induction for tomorrow morning.

My first birth I went into labor spontaneously, no epidural, everything went well. Has anyone had an induction and made it through without an epidural? Would really like to avoid getting one. Was hoping this baby would be here earlier, and trying to make the best decision for our family in uncertain times.

I had my 37 week appt today. We talked about induction because my first two deliveries were "traumatic". Both kids (one natural, one induced) had to be extracted (one vacuum, one forceps) because their hearts stopped tolerating labor. Both were also posterior. The natural labor (40 weeks) got stuck while the induction (smaller at 39 weeks) did not.

Part of me, with my history of scary deliveries, likes the idea of the hospital telling me when to give birth because they aren't busy so there are enough people around should something go south. Also, peds will be evaluating LO immediately because of the potential of a heart defect. So it isn't just the OB and nurses that are needed for this delivery.

But, this is my first pregnancy not followed by MFM. Part of me just wants one last try at a routine-ish delivery. Let him cook for as long as he wants.

What would you do in my shoes?

I went in for my 38 week growth scan and NST today and doctors said baby isn't growing as expected. They're scheduling me for an induction tomorrow... I'm freaking out because I don't know what to expect and just because. Anyone have similar experiences and can share how it went down? Thanks so much!

Hi all,

I am 40 weeks Monday. No progression(no dialation) but cervix is soft. OB and I have decided inducing on Monday if no baby this weekend. However with cervix closed i’ll need the Cervidel? Any experiences?

Also, pitocin?

I’m going to continue to walk, eat dates and drink 2-3 cups of Raspberry Leaf Tea.... hoping she comes on her own.

She’s very big so inducing was thought to be best for us.

Anything, suggestions on how to dilate or induce naturally please? TIA

My OB office said they want to induce at 37 weeks because of on-again-off-again high BP and baby measuring very large (u/s and fundal height).

This is my 2nd baby. First pregnancy had pre eclampsia but not until the very end. I was induced at 40 wks 4 days and had her vaginally the following day. She was 7lb 10oz. I had a mild hemmhorage after.

I'm conflicted. A large baby isn't reason enough to induce, but I guess the combo of big baby/high-ish BP is enough to recommend it.

37 weeks just feels mega early to me. Breastfeeding was a horrendous nightmare last time and I really want it to go better this time. I worry a 37 weeker and an induction will make breastfeeding a challenge at the beginning.

I also worry about him not being fully developed and my body not being ready for labor and needing a c section. Which will be another thing potentially messing with breastfeeding.

I have another appt Thursday and plan to voice my concerns, but they are the doctors/experts so I will defer to their recommendations. Just wondering your thoughts or if you had any good sources of information I could read (not just a random Google search)

I’m 37w3d. I’m 39 years old. I was induced at 40+3 with my daughter 3 years ago because of my advanced maternal age. My doctor this time has given me the option to induce at 39 weeks. Trying to decide what would be best for both me and baby. Of course, I want to meet her ASAP but I also want her to be happy and healthy and ready to be born. Thoughts? Opinions? Experience?

Thanks!!

I’m about to have my second child and have been diagnosed with IUGR. As such, they want me induced before 38 weeks (Wednesday). The hospital can’t schedule me until Thursday morning but I have a BPP tomorrow which I’m prepared may send me straight in if the numbers have degraded. I know my practice was also planning to push for an earlier date tomorrow as well, so it could be as soon as tomorrow.

My first birth was spontaneous, mostly labored at home/ in a hotel (it’s a long story, #NYCbirth) and was only in the hospital long enough to push the baby out, which honestly I really liked. I didn’t have any pain medication. This is going to be a totally different experience and frankly I am terrified of an induction. I’m afraid of pitocin, I’m afraid of an epidural (though I think I will want one) and I’m afraid of things spiraling into a c section. I trust my midwives and the doctors they work with, and the doctors we’ve seen, but I’m scared. My husband is scared, especially since he is remembering the risks of an epidural we learned in our Bradley class 3.5 years ago. I just need some positive induction stories, especially second ones! The doctors say the fact that I’ve given birth vaginally before makes it far more likely to be successful as my body will likely remember what to do once things get started. I also want to say, I am not at all a radical when it comes to birth choices- I am totally supportive of whatever women think is best for them and their baby! I know sometimes people in my real life hear my first birth story and feel defensive so I hope this post doesn’t rub anyone that way since it is not at all my feelings. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, please share if you can so I can feel better going into this week!

I'm nearly 35w and went to an OB appt today. I was floored when the OB mentioned that they will probably want to induce me at 39w because I had a 32 hour labor (with 3 hours of pushing,) DS was nearly 10 lbs, and we needed a vacuum assist. It was awful and painful because I had a failed epidural.

My OB is concerned that I could need a c/s this time around if we don't induce early (I was really close to a c/s last time.) I know a c/s would be totally fine, but after laboring and pushing that long, I really wanted a vaginal birth.

Is this reasonable? I mean, I was hoping to go into labor naturally, but I also see their hesitation. Maybe one week early isn't that big of a deal...I don't know. I just don't want a repeat of DS'S birth.
Any insights or experiences?

We’ve been thinking we’ll induce on my due date if i don’t go early. Just found out though that she’s on vacation that whole week (due date is a Friday ... she’s on call Wed and Fri so we had two reasonable options).

I’m hoping I’ll just go into labor which did happen the first two times but no guarantee. We had talked about a low intervention induction and I know she would be very reasonable about discussing options with me (my first two were med-free deliveries so no experience with this).

The practice has about 10 OBs and I don’t really know any of the others ... no idea how supportive they would be, though I plan to ask my ob next week. I didn’t care who delivered my other two because my body was doing all the work on its own but seems different when you’re making decisions about pitocin and breaking water and such. But if I really want her I’d have to induce at 39w.

Guess I’m just looking for any other experiences that might be helpful! Thanks!

I recently saw a new OB at my practice (there are only two OBs). She took one look at my history—a severe 2nd degree tear that took 45 min to stitch up with LO1, an extensive 3rd degree tear that took 1.5 hours to stitch up with LO2–and offered schedule a primary c section. The other OB had said “absolutely not” when I asked her about the validity of a c section this time around. FWIW, I’m 100% sure it would have been easier to recover from a c section than my last delivery; it. was. miserable.

Obviously, I’d like to avoid a c section...but I’d also like my lady bits to stay intact. OB #2 said we could also schedule an induction at 39 weeks (my last two were 8.5 lb babies born at 40+2) to hope for a smaller baby, but one of my friends said inductions themselves are linked to tearing (though I don’t know if there’s any truth to that)

Ladies with histories of severe tearing—what have you done? Proceeded with a C Section? Inductions? Crossed your fingers and hoped for the best? Anyone else have any thoughts?

Hi ladies! I’m going in tomorrow night to have a dose of Cervidril. I’ll be staying overnight and getting Pitocin in the morning on Saturday. I was induced with my first, but was already 3-4 cm dilated and 50% effaced. So, I didn’t need Cervidril. This time, I’m only 2cm and not effaced. I’ll be 39w 3d tomorrow.

Anyway, please tell me about your experience with Cervidril. Thank you!

So I'm probably just killing time here and maybe jumping the gun BUT anyway.....

With LO1 I had no dilation or effacement at 38 wks, 1cm/90% effaced at 39, 40, and 41 weeks. I was induced at 41+1 and LO1 was born at 41+2 after a long, rough 24-hour induction.

I'm being induced this time at 40wks due to low platelets. I imagine I'll be 0-1cm dilated and maybe effaced. I'm not getting my hopes up (I'm not dilated or effaced right now at 38 weeks). I'm also not trying any natural labor induction methods because I did them all last time and they didn't work. I walk a ton (I'm a teacher) and I nurse my son 15-30 min a day.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your stories about how you had very little dilation or effacement yet you still had a "successful" induction resulting in a vaginal birth.... bonus points if it was under 24 hours, haha. Just want to remind myself it is possible and stay positive :)

I know there have been a couple other threads on this but they're old now so I'm hoping for fresh input.

QUESTION: If you were induced with cytotec, cervidil, and/or a foley bulb; what was the rationale given for that selected method? What was your experience like?

BACKGROUND: I took cytotec for my miscarriage last year and read horror stories about it, though it ended up working fine. However, I did come away with a strong desire / belief to NOT use it for induction, due to the risks & it not being FDA-approved for induction.

I tried to bring this up to my OB last week and he pretty much waved away my concerns (another topic for another day....). He said it's entirely safe and it's the default med for cervical ripening. By that point I had asked so many questions that I just didn't want to push the topic anymore. I plan to ask about cervidil and the Foley Bulb tomorrow at my 39-week appt.

I go in for an appointment at 40+3 tomorrow. I see an OB practice in a large hospital that typically schedules an induction for 41 weeks if you haven’t delivered by your 40 week appointment, so I’m sure we’ll be talking scheduling an induction for early next week. Anyone with induction experience have advice on things to ask about or push for? I wouldn't mind giving the baby more time to come naturally but I also know that older moms face a higher risk of complications/stillbirth after 40 weeks - and I'm just narrowly missing being AMA - so I think maybe the 41 week timing makes sense?

This was my second baby, I was 39 yo, had borderline high blood pressure and gestational diabetes with this pregnancy. I was induced at 38+4 with DD 3 years ago. I had a relatively easy pregnancy with this one. I did have gestational diabetes and was monitored for that (took meds) but other than that it was smooth. They set me to be induced at 39 weeks.

On the morning of I called in at 7 am as instructed and was told to eat breakfast and check in at 8 at the hospital. I had breakfast with DD and we took her to daycare and I cried and cried at drop off. It was very emotional for me. We arrived at the hospital and were told where to go so we walked to the check in area. As soon as I got there they made me get into a wheel chair, kinda funny considering I walked in just fine and I wasn’t in active labor! They wheeled me back and we were checked in. I was weighed and told to change into the hospital gown. It was 815 am. We got settled in and numerous nurses and hospital personnel came in to finish the check in process, draw my blood, get the iv inserted, etc and then at 10 am they gave me a pill to get my cervix softened and to begin dilation. I was at a 1 cm at 10 am.

I was given meds again at 2 pm.

I was checked at 6 pm and was STILL 1 cm.. I was so discouraged. My blood pressure had been high all day and they wouldn’t let me out of bed, I had to keep the fetal monitors on and my blood pressure cuff on as well. It was so uncomfortable and I was very unhappy. I had really hoped this induction would go faster bc it was my second but it didn’t appear to be going that way.

After my check DH brought DD for dinner and it was hard bc I was bedridden and DD was confused. But we snuggled and she lifted my spirits. They left at 715 pm so DH could put DD to bed. DH stayed home with DD over night and I stayed bed bound in the hospital. I’m not going to lie that night was terrible. The bed was so uncomfortable; I had two belly monitors on, leg compressors on both legs, an IV in my hand and a bp cuff on my arm. At 146 am I almost had a breakdown, I literally wanted to cry.

At 6 am they checked me and I was 1.5 cm. I lost it. All of this torture, not being able to move around and I was only 1.5 cm after 24 hours. I cried, hard. The nurse saw my frustration (it was pretty obvious) and she told me that I could be off monitors for a while so I called DH and told him to get DD there to visit asap. Well, as it does with a toddler, it took a while for them to get there and by the time they got there the nurse was trying to hook me back up. I had another breakdown and the nurse gave me some additional time. I was just so tired of being stuck in one room in bed. Ugh, I am not cut out for that. I feel bad thinking about how upset I was at that time. The poor nurse.

The on call dr came in and noted I wasn’t progressing and that it was basically the same as my first induction which took three days. I told them I couldn’t stand it taking that long this time so we decided to do the epidural and insert foley bulbs (again). I got the epidural at 1130, foley bulbs were inserted at noon and Pitocin was started at 1215. DH went home to work and DD went to spend the day with MIL and FIL at our house.

I was checked at 515 pm and I was 5 cm!! Hallelujah. I was just so happy to be over 2 cm’s. The dr broke my water at 519 pm and it splashed everywhere, the dr made jokes about it. At this time DH was at home ordering dinner for his family, who was there watching DD and my mom was flying in from FL. My mom landed at 715 pm. DH came to the hospital after eating dinner with his family and my mom came to the hospital to see me. At 8 pm I was checked and I was 5 cm. Again the feeling of frustration fell over me. I was certain it was going to take another 24 hours for DS to come. We sent my mom home to our house to relieve the in-laws of DD duty and DH said he’d spend the night with me in the hospital (turned out to be a good thing!!)

At the 8 pm check the nurse said DS was high and sideways so they had me flip onto my right side and lay with a huge “peanut” ball between my legs. As soon as my mom left they flipped me and I finally felt pain of contractions. I would say it was a 5/10, not terrible but I could definitely feel it every 1-2 mins or so. I tried to relax and get some rest. DH laid down on the pull out couch thing and about 20 mins later the nurse came back and said they wanted to switch my sides bc DS’s heartrate was dropping during contractions. So, I flipped to the left side and the “peanut” ball was again between my legs. I again tried to relax and this time I started to feel pain on the left side every 1-2 mins. After another 20-30 mins the nurse came back and said she wanted to check me bc DS’s heartrate was behaving as if he was ready to come out but just an hour ago I was only 5 cm’s……..

She checked and immediately started prepping for me to push. The lights came on, the mirrors came out, DH was woken up, the dr was called and another nurse came in to help. They were getting all the tools and stuff ready. It happened very quickly, probably took 10-15 mins. The nurse told me to do a practice push and I did, she stopped me half way through and said to wait for the dr. The dr came in a few mins later and they had me push once and DS was born! At 943 pm. DH couldn’t believe how fast it had happened and remarked “I was just sleeping 15 mins ago and now I have a son”. LOL. I noted how tiny DS was.

He was 6lb 8 oz, he scored 9’s on both apgars and was 19 inches long. We did skin to skin and he latched right away. He was beautiful. DH did skin to skin while I delivered the placenta and was cleaned up.

Aftermath:
In the hospital one of the nurses at the hospital thought she heard a slight heart murmur but our pediatrician checked DS and we were cleared to go home. He weighed 6lb3oz when we left. We got home and settled in. He was a good eater and a good pooper. We had our check up 3 days later and he was up to 6lb6oz’s and everything was good.

I was feeling pretty good. Only pushing twice was amazing and my body didn’t hurt too bad at all. I was recovering very well, better than I had with DD.

At ten days old DS didn’t want to eat all day. I figured he might have a tummy ache or was just having an off day. But by late afternoon he felt cool to me. Like not warm enough. I mentioned it to DH when he got home but DS seemed normal (except for not eating) so we had dinner and were relaxing and I was doing skin to skin to keep DS warm. I then gave DS to DH while I went to put DD to bed and DH finally realized what I meant about his temperature being low ( I asked DH to do skin to skin too to keep DS warm). I immediately took DS to the ER. DH called his parents to come stay with DD.

At the hospital DS started having a hard time breathing and they said he had hyperthermia. There were so many nurses and doctors working on him. They told me he was going to be airlifted to Children’s in DC. It was surreal. The helicopter crew arrived at 11 pm and he was moved into an incubator and taken away. We drove to the hospital while he was flown there. By the time we arrived he had been sedated and incubated and a breathing tube had been inserted. It was like my worst nightmare. We were filling out papers and answering questions and just in a daze. At 2 am they said his heart wasn’t functioning properly and it was enlarged. We were moved to the Cardiac Unit. They were doing all kinds of tests on him and there were 5-10 people in his room at all times. DH and I were shell shocked. By 6 am the two main cardiac dr’s came to us to update us. They actually had good news. Somehow his heart was now working properly, however he did have a hole in his heart (VSD), but that is actually quite common and probably what the nurse in the hospital heard (murmur). They said the hole was NOT what caused his issue so they kept testing and testing. They did every test imaginable. They even consulted with the genetics team. Nothing was found.

All tests were negative. After four days the breathing tube was finally removed and he immediately started nursing again. This was good bc my supply had TANKED, I was pumping and getting less than 0.5 ounce from BOTH sides. It was so hard to have him hooked up on all the machines and to have to have help picking him up. As the days passed and he got stronger and stronger they removed some wires/machines until he was down to just the oxygen. We were moved out of CICU and finally all of his wires were removed. He nursed for what seemed like all day and all night. After 8 days in the hospital we were finally released. The cause of the problem was never identified; it was officially classified as culturally negative sepsis.

We were referred to a cardiologist to monitor his VSD and have been there twice (DS is now 4 months old). At our last appt we were told his VSD was down graded from severe to moderate and we now go every 3 months. DS is doing great and thriving! We are so happy and thankful everything worked out ok! It was the scariest thing I’ve ever been through.

Hi! What are some things I can do to prepare my body for induction? Specifically to hopefully avoid a csection. I did have my 1st at 38 weeks and my 2nd at 37 weeks and will be induced at 39 weeks. I am currently 2cm dilated and crampy af but that's about it. 3 weeks from tomorrow is induction date. I'm scared out of my mind! For lots of reasons really haha. And yes, I am aware it's dumb to be scared of a csection. But a week ago I was planning on my 3rd birthing center birth and all of a sudden I will now be at a hospital and induced so I'm still struggling to come to terms. So anyone have any tips??

Pic for attention. Yes the mirror is dirty. 36 weeks tomorrow. Still sitting high.

Today I'm 39.4 weeks pregnant and have been having contractions, cramping and pain for 2 weeks now.
I am hoping for a VBAC and have the best VBAC doctor around as well as a doula.
At my last appt, he asked when/if I wanted to schedule an induction. He left the decision up to me entirely, but said if I wanted one next week (40+) weeks, it would be best to get it on the hospital calendar as soon as possible.
I scheduled one for next Wed but he thought there was a good chance I'd go into labor before then.
Well I'm not optimistic about spontaneous labor before Wednesday.
I'm second guessing my decision to schedule something, but this prodromal labor sucks.
I'm currently 3cm, baby is low, cervix is posterior but thin and I'm having irregular contractions every 15 minutes or so.

Anyone have any VBAC induction success stories?
Any other thoughts/advice?

So after a very long day, I am unexpectedly being induced tonight due to some issues with my placenta. I know it is the best decision for baby but I'm 2 weeks early and feel so unprepared and definitely freaking out a bit! Did not see this coming and now trying to quickly wrap my head around it all while grabbing random things from my house to bring back to the hospital before I check in.

I will be likely starting with the route of doing cervidil where they insert a tampon thingy with the drug in it. Haven't had much time to learn about it since this is all a bit last minute. I've chosen this over the foley catheter because it sounded a little less torturous, although I know anything can happen and might have to try several things to get stuff going since I'm not currently in any sort of labor.

Wondering if you have used this method, what was your experience like? Did it work? Was it okay? I think I'm looking for comfort more than horror stories lol. I am suddenly not feeling very brave about any of this!

Also can't even wrap my head around the idea that there will be a baby here soon... I think I'm in some sort of shock that hopefully will pass very soon :)

I'm just curious about this.. I had an induction at 40+4, due to borderline low amniotic fluid. I was 100% effaced and like 2/3cm dilated when I got induced and had him vaginally. So I'm curious for those of you who had an induction with their first, how did the 2nd go?

Did your inductions go similarly?

I'm going to be induced a week from today at 37 weeks for an IUGR/SGA baby and am nervous about a long labor because as of now, I'm not at all displayed or effaced.

I was induced with DD1 (coincidentally also around 37 weeks) after my water broke but labor did not begin. I was about 1 cm at the time and went very quickly (maybe 4 hours).

This seems hilarious to write down, after everything we've gone through so far... but can anyone here talk to me about inductions?

What was your reason for one, what methods were used, how did it go?

This trouble making baby is still baking (!!) and looking beautifully chubby, which is wonderful - but because her size is massive and my placenta is making for reduced movements, we're starting to look at birth options in case she doesn't fall out of her own accord.

Seriously - talk about going from one extreme to the other!

(My OB is leaving it up to me, but wouldn't induce until 38+ weeks **IF** nothing has begun on its own before then, which is still highly likely - this cervix of mine is causing total mind games!

If you have been previously induced, what method was used and how did it go?

Bonus question - if you had a successful induction resulting in vaginal delivery with your first, did you have the same outcome with your second induction?

With my first I had cervical ripening bc I had zero progress. This time I have option to start by breaking waters or pitocin (I was 3cm and 50% effaced a week ago; I've also lost my mucus plug since then.) I thought breaking the water would be a good more natural option, but now I'm starting to second guess what would be best!

I'm still not a candidate for medical induction, but based on all of my research having a suspected large baby is not cause for a scheduled cesearean in an otherwise complication- free pregnancy. I go back to the doctor in a couple of days to check my amniotic fluids and have another cervical check.

As of today, my Bishop Score is still 0, and baby is at -3 station. Acupuncture is my preferred natural induction choice, but nothing I have read says it moves baby in the right position. Before I do something that helps with contractions I figure I should do something that helps him drop into my pelvis like a Chiropractor adjustment.

That's where my question lies, were you on the Bishop Scale at all before inducing (medical or natural)? What station was baby? Did your induction lead to a vaginal or cesearean delivery?

Thanks

I never really looked into failed inductions until I had it myself.

Tell me about your failed induction. I'm assuming no one knew they were going to have one until they did. (Unless you had one before and have a higher risk of having another one.)

My twin pregnancy ended up being a failed induction. My PPROM or water broke (minor leak) at 28 weeks. I was on hospital bed rest until I went into labor. Luckily, I managed to keep the babies in until 6 weeks later when I was scheduled to be induced at 34 weeks. At the time of the induction, I was 4cm dilated and 100% effaced. I felt no pain. A few hours later, at 5 cm, I got the epidural because I wanted to make sure I was awake if I had a c-section. About 12 hours later, with lots of pitocin, I only got to 6 cm. It was determined that I wouldn't dilate any more. They think my uterus might have been already tired from my water breaking weeks before (maybe I had been contracting for the past 6 weeks). It was also mentioned that maybe I had an undetectable infection. I could have waited it out but I was tired and there was a small spike in temperature so we proceeded with a c-section.

Oh, at the beginning of the induction, both babies were head down and both OBs on call that weekend were ok with doing a breach extraction. So I think I had a good chance of a vaginal delivery for one or both. I was a tiny bit sad that I couldn't do a vaginal birth but looking back, I have no regrets. I was ready and prepared for anything to happen in my twin pregnancy.

Tell me about your failed induction.

I have known induction would be on the table for me starting at 39w...but now the time is getting closer...

The whole pregnancy I have said "if my body has not done anything on its own I will not force it"...

At 37w I was 2cm and 50% effaced...baby was low (head down) and engaged. So now I actually have to make a decision...

My first delivery...I was 3cm for a few weeks, then 4cm at 40w2d...went into labor the next day after an aggressive membrane sweep. Labor started at 2am...got bad (pain wise) around 6am...epi at 8am...baby was here at 1pm. Pretty great labor.

I am having major anxiety over this labor mostly related to making sure K is good and taken care of. This is part of what makes an induction so appealing...its scheduled we can get K all squared away then go off and have a baby. The idea of it happening spontaneously terrifies me...too many "what ifs"...I know its not rational but I'm 9 mos preggo and rationale thoughts are thing of the past.

Would love to hear from some of you Mama's who have elected to induce with a favorable cervix and positive labor history...would you do it again?
