So my 2 year old up until this point did not have any kind of lovey he was attached to (even though I've bought a couple of the small blanket/stuffed animal combo ones for him). Well he has become very attached to this giant fuzzy thomas the train blanket, like it will cover a full size bed. I have tried substituting it for smaller comparable things (fuzzy, thomas, fuzzy thomas) and it's all a no go.

Has anyone ever successfully swapped out a lovey, and not just snuck in a duplicate for laundry, daycare, or loss?

Basically what the title says. LO1 never got attached to anything in particular, but LO2 is very attached to a small blanket she sleeps with.

I feel like I've heard horror stories of loveys going out of stock or being lost on vacation etc.

Should I buy a back up (or two?) I'm afaid they are going to discontinue the print.
Should I bring a back up on vacation with us? (It's super small)
Or am I just being paranoid??

If you could have chosen any lovey for your LO to be attached to....what would it have been?

I'm thinking of trying to get DD3 (15 months) attached to something sometime soon. She's a huge thumb sucker and cuddler, and I think she'd enjoy a little lovey. Currently she's obsessed with her big sisters' Little Live Pet birds, so, yeah....I'd like to help her find something else to snuggle before she starts carrying one of those annoying things everywhere, haha :) :)

Big sisters have small stuffed animals- a (realistic) King Charles Spaniel (8" size but really floppy at this point) and an Aurora purple stuffed penguin (also 6-8" tall). Trying to stay on the cheaper side since we'll probably need to have 2-3 on hand.

Show me the cutest lovey you've seen! :)

We have a beanie baby that has a pacifier attached (it's pretty much a weighted wubanub). DD is particular attached to her dolphin. One of our dogs got to the silicone pacifier so I had to cut the tip of the pacifier.

She still sucks on it and uses it when she sleeps and soothes her when she gets upset. (Oh, she is 22 months old)

Since the tip is cut, do I need to go the extra step in cutting the rest of the pacifier off?

She is still attached to her Dolphin. If she is not sucking the pacifier part, she'll still suck on the fin or another part of the dolphin. So it's turning into a lovey.

Anyone had to do something similar with a wubanub?

The short story - how do you go about giving a four year old a new version of a (previously irreplaceable) lovey when you've suddenly found one, and her old one is WAY TOO DESTROYED to ever trick her into thinking it's the same one?
--------------------------------
The more dramatic story:

DD1, who was 4 in June, has a little stuffed dog (actually, two of them, but she doesn't know that) which was given to her by my sister as a parting gift on a visit to my sister's house when DD1 was about 17 months old. Doggie originally came from Target and was not intended to be a special toy; he just looked like my sister's dog and was really soft and cute. Of course, DD1 became super-insantly-forever attached to it, and she relies on it hardcore to this day - for sleep, comfort, a friend.....this thing is her most prized posession and will be for a long time. As soon as we realized this was happening, my sister was able to find just one more Doggie at Target....but only one. For the past 2.5 years, my extended family, our friends, my realtor (ha!) have seriously been scouring Target stores and rest stop gift shops across the country for another Doggie; I've been all over eBay and Amazon and every collectable stuffed toy shop there is on the internet across the world and seriously - this thing just doesn't exist anywhere, for any amount of money. I tried giving her a larger version of it, but the fur isn't the same, the body is totally stuffed rather than beanbag like, and she just didn't buy it. So I'd protected Doggie with my life and worried in the back of my head about what happens when he (and his twin) bite the dust, since clearly he is here to stay. And I'd kind of forgotten about getting anymore backups.

Then there was today.

DD and I were looking online for a stuffed animal for her to take to school for naptime (I didn't want her taking her Doggie because of the irreplaceability factor if he were to be lost or damaged beyond repair)....and there he was. Doggie. Going for $10 a pop from a seller in the UK who has not one, not two, but TEN of these puppies to sell. I'm over the moon!

So, I have a two part question -

---------------------------------------

1) How do I present this opportunity to my four year old? There is no way she is going to believe that "Doggie got a bath" like she did when she was two or so and we brought backup Doggie into our lives - her current Doggie is seriously bedraggled. I figured I would just ask her if she'd like to have a new Doggie either to take to school or have at home, and see what she says (while promising, obviously, that Doggie the Original isn't going anywhere). And if she says no, buying one and hiding it anyway for a future change of heart. :)

2. How many of these things do I buy?!?! I'm considering at least two, maybe three. Thinking I'd send one new one to school, continue the charade of Doggie the Original being one dog, but throwing New Doggie #2 into the rotation as needed, and possibly getting a New Doggie #3 to keep for her when she's grown up just for the sake of comparing what he originally looked like! DH thinks I'm insane for even entertaining the idea of buying one. I'm halfway tempted to buy ALL THE DOGGIES :)

But seriously - has anyone ever addressed replacing a lovey with a child who is old enough to know? How did you do it? How did it go?

On the one hand - ew, daycare germs, and I'm afraid it will get lost. But on the other she loves it so and cries when I make her leave it at home. What do you do?

Our toddler gets attached to different things at different times. She was never super attached to any one lovey.

The baby (6 months) has a bunny angel dear "from the Easter bunny" that she seems to really like and will snuggle with in her crib. I want to buy more but haven't decided if we should get identical ones or something different. The toddler has a tiger and an elephant and likes them equally- and would definitely Know if I tried to give one to her sister!

I've tried to give her a lovey and it's usually in the other corner of the crib or on the ground when we wake up.

LO is 18 months, and, for lack of any better way to put it, is completely addicted to chewing on bottles. Bottles have basically become her "lovey", she wants one in her mouth when she's playing, anxious, tired, happy, etc. and will tantrum when she can't have one. It doesn't matter if they are full/empty, she just loves them. I have no idea why she developed this attachment, but here we are. We tried to bottle wean when she was about 13 months old, and it was a terrible disaster - she was constantly stealing the bottles of the other kids in daycare, which was awful. We were hoping she'd outgrow wanting them, but instead she wants them more and more. We've offered many other options of loveys, but nothing has really connected with her.

At this point, most of her daycare friends are off bottles and we're going to bite the bullet and get rid of all but her night time bottle, starting this weekend. I know it will be painful for all of us, any advice?? Anyone else gone through this? She's perfectly capable of drinking from cups and happily does so at meals, so there is no concern that she will dehydrate.

I so wish we didn't have to do this, it seems so mean to take away her best coping mechanism. But, she can't be the 5 year old still drinking from bottles!

If your lo's "lovey" is you, what do you do?

LO has always loved playing with my hair, but it's getting a little out of control. I'm realizing that she's not really attached to any of her loveys or stuffed animals (though she does cuddle them sometimes) in any way comparable to her attachment to my hair. Maybe it's because we just weaned last week? Or because she's starting to have some "terrible two-"ness (she's 23 months)? But she constantly asks to hold my hair or just straight up grabs it, and I can't always be carrying her or in a position that allows her to reach me (ie, when she's eating, in the stroller, etc). I've tried substituting other toys, or my hands, etc, but she just wants me/my hair.

I'd love to hear any tips/success stories/commiseration!

Both of my girls have to have their blankies when going to bed, traveling anywhere, or if we go over to someone's house. We don't bring them into stores and it doesn't go to school with LO1 but they have them around a lot, they definitely don't stay in their beds when they are up. It doesn't bother me though, I actually had a blanket until I was...we will just say old. I have no intention of making them ever give it up, since it comforts them so much!

When did you introduce a lovey to your LO? I've tried giving our 9 month old a A&A Security blanket but she really doesn't have any interest in it right now. Our oldest is obsessed with her blankie, so I was surprised she didn't take to it right away! when did you introduce a lovey?

do you limit their use with it?

DS1 has a very strong attachment to his loveys (A&A blankets, A&A security blankets).

He's only used it for sleep, but since he dropped his nap a few months ago, he's definitely wanting to bring the blankets out during the day time too.

I have one at his school for "emergencies," my mom freely lets him have it when he's over at her place, at home he's usually good about leaving it in his room.

I'm not sure if or when we should get rid of them, or when we really buckle down for only nighttime sleep use. (This coming from a 32 yo who still sleeps with her "lovey.").

This morning at daycare drop off, we had an epic meltdown due to the fact that DD forgot her lovey at home. She's 3 and she knows it is her responsibility it grab it in the morning if she wants it. I keep a back up stuffed animal in the car, so she had something for nap, but it's "not the same." How do you handle the forgetting/losing of lovey?

If LO is a boy, we're going to want to get him a stuffed tiger. It's hard to judge the quality and softness of stuffed animals on the internet, however. Any go-to brands for super snuggly but durable stuffed animals?

Our 3 year old has a "blankie" and she's super attached to it and anytime she's upset, hurt, tired she must have it and rub her face with it. I'm getting nervous that the attachment is getting stronger as she gets older not less, we try to limit it to naps and bedtime but its not going well! How long was your child super attached to their lovey?

Both of my LO's have A&A blankets as their Lovey's. LO1 has 5 and LO2 has 7! Some have been well loved so they won't make it much longer so it's nice we have several back ups. I only have one lovey as a kid and if we ever forgot it somewhere it was heartbreaking for me! Glad we can avoid that with the girls :)

DD1 has a blanket and a small stuffed animal. It's crazy to us how quickly attached she gets to things. The blanket has been around for 2 years but this animal is new, and it is her obsession. She used to sleep with DH's old CareBear (so gross) but now it's "snow leopard" that we picked up at the zoo gift shop. She gave DD2 "Barry" the CareBear...which I put in the closet.
