We just bought our almost 6-year-old a pair of tie shoes this weekend. She specifically asked so she could be part of the “tying school club at school.”

Apparently if your in the “club” you’re in charge of tying the shoes of everyone that doesn’t know how. She definitely can’t now, but we’ll see how much she wants to join the “club.” :silly:

He’s 6 and I haven’t taught him yet. Late last year, I decided to teach him and bought a pair of shoes with laces. By the time i got around to it, he had already outgrown the shoes and I tabled the issue again...

Second grade. But DS is in third grade and still struggles. It takes him like 10 minutes to tie or untie. A couple of days ago I showed him how to do it again, because his laces kept coming untied, and apparently, the first time he hadn't understood an important part of the process  and was all "Why didn't you tell me earlier???!!!"

@KT326: My 2nd grader doesn't know and he's about to turn 8. All his shoes have been velcro and his school has encouraged velcro! We were planning on teaching him with his soccer shoes but were always running late and kept forgetting. Guess we should break them back out and teach both kids!

DS is going to be 6 this month and doesn't know yet, I keep thinking I need to sit down and really teach him. His tennis shoes are tie so I have to tie them for him every morning and double knot so they last the whole day.
I'm thinking once it snows and he has to wear snow boots /put shoes on at school this will become more of an issue too. Ideally he'd learn at school

DD is almost six and can't do it yet. We've tried to teach her a few times but it hasn't clicked yet. Our elementary school actually requested that all kindergartners stay in velcro shoes this year because teachers won't help them tie their laces. (Obviously, their aren't requiring it or making it a big issue, but we were happy to cooperate.) I figure we will just keep showing her and it will click eventually.

@Ms. RV: I know it’s hard not to worry, but my ped has social smiling in the list of three month milestones, so I’m sure your LO is OK, just a little more serious as others have said. DD is about the same age, and smiles from time to time, but like yours is still tough to predict/draw out. MIL was here this weekend and we were trying everything we could think of and didn’t get a big one at all. I’m sure he’ll come around in his own time,

My first was also very slow to consistently smile. I think I got one around 2 months, maybe another smile a couple weeks later, but as a young baby he rarely smiled.. we weren’t too worried because instinctually we thought he had a very observant and aware personality. He was a happier older baby, toddler, and child. He’s five years old now and still can be very focused and observant.

I think my third was hardest to get smiles out of too. I think I remember finding there was a fairly wide range of normal, if you are getting some probably all fine. Part may be she got less direct attention as #3 - partly I think it’s personality, she is 16m now with many opinions and is kind of famous for her frowns but also laughs a lot - just intense maybe like mentioned above!
I worry all the time she’s getting behind because she gets less attention than the other two did. But she’s figured out tons on her own by watching us all so hopefully it evens out

My first was a super intense, hard to please baby and didn’t smile till about 12 weeks (even in her content moments). They were pretty hard to come by for months even after that, and she didn’t really start laughing until 5 or 6 months. We joke that she was just really unhappy to be a baby :). Maybe unrelated but she’s super bright (and sweet of course) now as a 7 year old - it was just her personality to very seriously observe everything. She’s still pretty intense and has got some crazy focus on what she’s interested in :)

DS2 is exactly two months today (born at 39+3). We have gotten a couple of social smiles from him, one on Christmas and one today. That's it. DD and DS1 were super smiley by nine weeks so of course I am worrying. His 2 month well visit is in a couple of days and I will bring it up then, but right now I am looking for any similar experience.

My sister's DD has ASD and global developmental delays so I am kind of googling myself into the rabbit hole :bummed:
