Has anyone used the resources from the baby sleep site? DD is 6 mo and has decided to stop napping entirely and with both of us WFH with no help DH and I need to do something fast. Our local bookstore doesn’t have any nap books in stock and amazon is saying it’ll take a week to get us something, so the idea of a download sounds great, but I also don’t really trust a random website.

DS will turn 2 this month. At daycare, he napped from 1-3 like clockwork. On weekends we weren’t super strict about his schedule but when he seemed tired we’d bring him to the bed, rub his back for a couple minutes, and he’d be out for a ~2 hour stretch. (This is also how he goes to bed at night.)

Now we are home 24/7 and he has started refusing his nap. We’ve tried doing what we used to do on weekends - lay down with him for a couple minutes and he’d be out - but he just won’t settle. He tries to get out of the bed, or hides under the covers and acts like it’s playtime. We’ve tried putting him in the crib so he can’t escape, but he screams nonstop. We’ve tried letting him bring a book into the crib for some quiet time, we’ve tried rocking him in the glider...nothing is working and I am at my wits end. He is definitely not ready to skip a daily nap - he’s a total mess by 3:30 or so, and last night he wound up dozing off from 5:00-6:30 because he was just exhausted. It’s making it incredibly hard to WFH - on top of missing the 2 hour block of work during what should be naptime, he needs so much more hands on attention all afternoon because he’s so overtired.

How do we go about establishing a nap routine at home? Thanks for any suggestions!

I think my baby is a fairly good night sleeper, but hes terrible for naps.

He only sleeps for about 30 minutes and hes awake. I am longing for him to sleep a decent amount of time so I can get things done while he naps, and maybe even have a bit of "me" time. But he only sleeps for 30 minutes and gets tired after about an hour to two hours.

Any tips? Will he just grow out of this himself? When he wakes up he usually just lays there quietly. I wouldn't even know he is awake except for looking at the monitor. He eventually starts to fuss.

I do feed him or rock him to sleep but if hes drowsy but still awake he will put himself to sleep most of the time (unless hes really over tired).

I usually have a fan going in the room (although I do plan to buy an actual white noise machine) and it's fairly dark in the room. We just came back from vacation and the hotel room was nearly pitch black in the day and he still only slept 30 min.

Sometimes if he sleeps on me he will sleep for an hour or two - but even that is rare and its usually only 30 min.

Maybe this is common or normal. I dont like cry it out methods. Tips are appreciated!

DD is 4months old, exclusively FF and sleeping through the night in her crib (6:30-6:30 with an occasional 5:30 wake up for the paci then right back to sleep.)

Want to start nap training her to 3 crib naps a day (or 1 stroller/2 crib). My DS was a very similar sleeper but I don’t remember at all the times/amounts he slept during the day.

She gets bottles at 10am and 2pm currently but I’d be fine with nudging those times and/or splitting one up.

Thoughts on when/how long her daytime naps should be? Will try to work around the 8-9am school dropoff and 12-1 pickup when we have to be on the go.

Curious at what age to nap train and to find out any helpful hints.

DS1 I never napped trained and he napped usually in our bed and I almost always laid down with him until he stopped napping earlier this year at 5.

I can’t do this again. DS2 is going to be 5 months this weekend. He currently naps in the RNP (which has to stop), his car seat or being held. Right now I nurse or rock to sleep for naps and he will transfer to his RNP but not the crib. Two naps usually line up with drop off/pick up of big brother so I leave him to sleep in his car seat when we get home.

His first nap is always at home. Will it even work to nap train if I can only for sure do the one nap in his crib?

Help! My 28-month old has been on nap strike for a week! He goes to bed between 6:30-7pm, wakes up between 5:30-6am and then refuses to nap. We've done all the things we're supposed to- schedule, dark room, white noise, routine etc. I keep trying to stay with our routine, but he's SO busy in there- he gets out of his crib, turns on the light, shrieks, laughs etc. I don't know what to do! He's so tired but so stubborn! Anyone go through nap strike successfully? Tips? Encourgement?

Hi all!

I wanted to share my 7mo baby’s improvement with naps in crib (hopefully I’m not jinxing myself). I was so scared to start the training but I’m on day 3 and his crying is getting less everyday! I’ve been doing a pre nap routine and putting him in crib awake.

Day 1 was up to 35mins if crying :bummed:
Day 2 was about 20 mins of crying for first nap and 7minutes of crying for nap 2!!
Day 3 was 7-10 minutes of crying for both naps!

Will it get better? Stay the same? Should I expect a burst? I can deal with 10 or less mins of crying even though it sucks, but would love to eventually see none at all!

Thanks!

Hi all,

I’ve started nap training my 7mo old today. It’s so hard. First nap he cried half hour and didn’t fall asleep. We took a break and tried an hour later. He then cried 35 mins on the second attempt but fell asleep and slept almost 40mins.

Second nap of day he cried 30mins and didn’t fall asleep. Took a break and 30 mins later trying again bc I know he’s tired. He’s been crying 10min so far and I feel so bad.

Please tell me it will get better soon.... how long till I see a change?

Hi everyone,

I’m starting to look into a nap training plan for my 7mo and was looking for some suggestions to come up with a plan.

We cosleep at night and for naps I side lie nurse him to sleep on our bed where he takes his naps. This started because every time I put him in the crib asleep he would wake up. I don’t mind nursing him to sleep for naps it’s just now he’s more mobile and can climb over the pillows on the bed so I need to change this. Sometimes lately if I lay him on me laying down in bed he’ll fall asleep as well. I don’t mind this either bc I know the snuggles won’t last forever but it’s transferring somewhere else to sleep that’s the issue.

I was thinking about doing the “swing method” but it’s recommended for 6m and under. I’m familiar with the Ferber method and extinction method but wanted to see what other options I have. I tried laying him in his crib one day last week and he was hysterical.

I sleep trained him a couple months ago for bedtime except recently I changed the bedtime routine so nursing is 20-30min before bedtime therefore he goes down completely awake and he’s doing well. Still waking up a few times a night though (need to work on night weaning).

Any suggestions on how to get started on nap training and getting him to sleep in the crib? Or any other suggestions for naps? Could I try the swing method? I know some may suggest laying him in his crib awake at nap time and do CIO but it’s so hard to listen to him cry. I know it’s probably going to be what to have to do :bummed:

TIA!

Ok moms... our 9 month old will not nap alone. To be honest he never really has and this is probably a huge mistake on our part as parents. When he is finally asleep if we set him down his eyes instantly open up so we have always held him for naps. That is unless he falls asleep in his car seat. He has always slept on his own no problem but napping that’s another story.

He is watched while I work by Grandma and she has always held him too. Does anyone have any ideas or advice on how to get him to nap in the crib or pack and play. He has maybe a handful of times, but it’s obviously not consistent and the times he stayed asleep we feel are completely luck! We love holding him because we sadly know it’s going to end but I think if we can get him to nap our lives will be much more our together. That time is so valuable. Any ideas???

I have read about sleep training and tried several times to do some of those ideas. Ie; put him down when drowsy, leave him in there, etc. He doesn’t sleep though he just plays. I mean I have left him for over an hour 😊... or he has been asleep, put him down and we have the same outcome... playing. I think he naps with us becuase of body heat and cozy ness, but I don’t know how to duplicate that feeling for him in the crib? Oh also we have tried a shirt that smells like me for grandmas house... didn’t work 😢. We need ideas from experienced parents.

Help! My 7-month-old DD will not nap without either being on my breast or in the car. She's in her crib SCREAMING right now. It's the first time I've tried to put her down to nap in there. She co-sleeps with me at night, which I have no problem with. But, she needs to learn to nap on her own. I don't know how long is too long to let her cry in her crib. I feel like a monster right now. :(

Hi,

My LO is 4.5mo. I know they say to start sleep training with bedtime but can I start with naps? My LO takes crap naps, 30-50 min but usually 30min. The last couple days I’ve put him in his swing around his nap time and it worked a couple times with barely any tears. He also slept for over an hour all three times that it worked. Yesterday when I did it for his last nap he cried quite a bit, wasn’t sure if I should let him cry or not. He used to hate his swing so this is a step forward. If I’m doing nap training and use the swing is this ok? Or should I just be putting him in his crib? I really like the swing bc he slept much longer in it compared to his usual cat naps.

Also, don’t know if I’m ready to sleep train at bedtime yet bc we currently cosleep and I don’t want to confuse him. Or is it ok to sleep train while co sleeping then switch to crib later?

Can you guys teach me how to nap train? I did nighttime/nap training with LO1 all in 1 shot, and it wasn't toooooo bad. We basically let her CIO until she learned how to fall asleep on her own.

LO2 goes down at night with very little to no crying. But naps are HORRENDOUS. She will not fall asleep unless we rock, stroll, wear and will wake up as soon as we put her down, stop strolling/moving. I've been trying to do CIO for naps, but the kid is freaking stubborn and will cry the whole entire time. Do I just keep at it, or is it useless? She's 5.5 months.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else was looking for advice on nap training.

I was really diligent in sleep training for bedtime- I refused to nurse to sleep or do any kind of soothing. I just put her down and walked out of the room and refused to return until morning. That worked so well! But it never occurred to me for some reason to do that for naps.

So for awhile we had been doing a lot of soothing for naps- rocking, patting, shushing, etc. When my daughter was around 8.5 months she started refusing the pacifier. I was at a loss. She only napped when she had a pacifier, so how could I get her to sleep if she refused to take it? So I decided it was time to nap train.

We committed to doing it like bedtime. We put her down (did not put a paci in, but left some in the crib if she wanted to place them herself) and left the room. By the second day we could barely get her in her crib before she had popped her own pacifier in, and rolled over to go to sleep. By herself. Wish we had done it sooner!

LO has been doing great with going to sleep at bedtime after a week of sleep training. Woo! He seemed to be applying it for naps too, but that quickly went out the window and he's back to screaming his face off unless he gets bounced/rocked until passing out. Boo! I know that nap training can be a lot harder and take longer. For those of you who did it, can you share what you did, and what worked? Any tips? I've read that after crying for 30 minutes, go get them and move on until the next nap. But I'm kind of terrified of my guy just not sleeping all day and the total mess he'll become... and I'll become. But I'm SOOO over the bouncing and want him to be happy and rested. Help!

We started sleep training LO doing modified CIO (although the checks didn't really help so really it ended up being full CIO). It's been a few days and working so well. Barely cried at all last night before falling asleep. I haven't been doing training for naps because the book I'm using said to start with bedtime first, and I know naps can take longer. We usually have to rock LO and put in the pacifier until he's almost fully asleep before putting in the crib.

For this current nap, he didn't seem to want the pacifier so I just put him down in the crib and went to the bathroom. Came back and he was asleep! I'm in shock. Just wondering, if you sleep trained, did naps naturally improve on their own, or did you have to nap train? I'm trying to figure out if this was just a fluke or what!

Hello! My son is 7 months old. He sleeps through the night for the most part (teething has been waking him up but he comforts himself back to sleep). He falls asleep easily on his own for bedtime.
Naps however are another struggle. He takes two naps usually, morning and afternoon. Morning nap is about an hour, sometimes in his crib. However, afternoon nap he will not sleep unless he is nursing. He will sleep for 2+ hours as long as he can nurse. I take him off once he's sleeping but he will wake halfway through and want to be back on.
My question is, how do I get him to nap in his crib and stay asleep for longer than 20 min? I know that I created a habit of nursing to nap, ?75 with him able to sleep at night on his own i know that he is capable. I'm not opposed to cry it out, I just want to make sure I am doing it right. I'll be back to work when he is 12 months so I have a few months to sort this out.
He will also nap well in the car or stroller.
Thanks for your help ladies!!!

I wrote a giant long thing but I'm going to try to sum it up. Dubs is 8 months old, and it's taking him longer and longer to fall asleep in my arms, so I think it's time to teach him to fall asleep in the crib. If your baby is kind of on a schedule (he gets up at 6 and naps around 7:30, 11:30, and 3) and it takes him 45 minutes to fall asleep, how do you adjust the schedule for the rest of the day, and how do you manage your anxiety over it? Am I the only one who stares at the monitor stressing about this? Do I just need to suck it up and deal with nap chaos for a few days until he gets the hang of falling asleep?

I think it's time to nap train. Our 6 month old goes to sleep on her own at bedtime with little to no fuss. However, at nap times we have to rock or bounce her until she's totally asleep. Then she only sleeps 30 minutes and wakes up crying. I usually nurse her then and she'll fall back asleep on me for 30 minutes to an hour.

I don't mind letting her sleep on me but she starts daycare soon so that won't be an option. Plus, she's starting to fight naps and screams at us when we bounce her anyway! How did you nap train? Any suggestions for getting her to fall asleep on her own?

The post today on the blog reminded me I need to ask the Bees about L's transition to one nap.

L is a great sleeper. Puts herself asleep drowsy. Sleeps from 6pm-6am. Her two naps started to get shorter and shorter so we decided it was time to put her down for one nap. She is 16 months old.

We put her down at 11:30 after lunch and without fail she wakes up between 30-45 minutes and won't go back to sleep. She is exhausted. I know she needs to sleep a bit longer. Someone tell me this is just a phase and she will eventually sleep longer!!

We are currently sleep/nap training DD (almost 5 months) I know that consistency is key, so I have basically resigned myself to the fact that for the next couple of weeks, we'll be doing naps at home until they get settled again (we were getting 3 long naps in arms/carrier, but the last two days since ST have had 4 short naps).

My question is, does it have to be all or nothing forever? I loved being able to take DD out in the Beco or ring sling and have her take a nap while we were walking with a friend or at an event. If I nap train, am I relinquishing this flexibility? Is it a trade off for independent sleep?

Would love to hear about people's experiences with this. Do you have an independent sleeper who is also somewhat portable? Do you find it throws off baby's sleep if they take a few naps a week "on the go"? Am I totally overthinking this?

We're having a harder and harder time getting DS to nap. We got into the habit of rocking/shushing, and it used to be easy. He would be asleep in less than 10 minutes. Now he is 8.5mo and is screaming when we start the routine, and just won't settle. Either cries or plays. I know we need to figure something out quick, but I don't know what will work. He just doesn't settle if we put him down in his crib awake. And I'm not OK with CIO methods.

Anyone else in the same boat have something that worked?

I've been trying to nap train DD2 for about a month and half. She's been pretty sick the past week so I put it on hold. Now that she's feeling better I want to start back up.

She'll be 7m on the 28th and I really do not want to hold her for all naps till she's over 1, like her big sister.

Drowsy but awake might as well be unicorns in this household. I try to get her to nap when she shows sleey signs. Sometime she fights it and sometimes she falls right asleep. Getting her to sleep in the crib is just a insane battle.
I also think she's transitiining from 3 to 2 naps. Some days it's 2 with a 5pm cat nap, some days it's just one!

How did you nap train your baby to nap in the crib?

I have some questions for those of you that nap trained!

How old was your LO?
What was your plan? (ex. how long did you leave, did you do checks, what did you do during checks, etc.)
What did you do if the nap failed? (ex. start over in an hour? Let them nap however they could to make up the time?)
How long did it take to nap train?

LO is 12 weeks and naps every 1-2 hrs..
Some days she will fall asleep in my arms as I'm holding her, some days I'll rock her, some days I will cuddle her on my chest, other times I put her down in swing or crib.....
Rarely do I set her in swing awake and she falls asleep for naps, currently trying that now...she doesn't cry just hangs out...
Does this sound about right for our age?

I need some advice with nap training. My 6 month olds naps are a disaster, and they've been like this since he was two weeks old. He is a chronic crap napper. In the last 6 months I can count on ONE HAND the amount of naps he's taken that have lasted longer than 36 minutes. 36 minutes is the longest. They are usually less. These days closer to 25 minutes.

He also needs to be rocked down for naps and the majority of the time he'll wake up the second we lay him down. He is obviously still tired when he wakes up. He's whiney, rubs his eyes, yawns, fusses. He's not getting enough sleep. I've played around with his awake times. Putting him to bed early, late.. Doesn't matter. 36 minutes or less.

So we are nap training. He's with a sitter during the week because I WOH and she is helping. What we are doing is doing a nap routine and laying him in the crib awake. Leaving him there for a full hour, and doing checks. During the checks we shush, pat his belly, tell him to go to sleep, give him a paci, and leave..no picking up. At the end of the hour we make a big production to signal the end of his naptime.

My question is for this weekend when I'm with him all day. If he cries the entire nap what do I do? Keep him awake until his next nap time? Or just take him out for a bit and try again? Also, do you let him nap like normal the next time (like rocking to sleep) or do you keep up with the nap training for each nap? I don't want to undo anything but I'm scared he won't sleep at all? Is that just the price you pay until he figures it out?

At the sitters he has been taking a short nap in the car after. She has to drop off and pick up her son from preschool so she cant help it if he falls asleep in the car. I'll be staying home all day when I'm home.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated! Today was our first day and he cried both times. Took two twenty minute car naps while she was picking up her son. That's it!

ETA: he naps horribly everywhere. Doesn't matter if I hold him, if he's in the swing, the car, the crib. I never get 'good' naps.

Up until 4 nights ago DD 2 (5.5m) took all naps and slept at night in her swing. I was growing increasingly anxious about getting her out of the swing. And her night sleep was soooo crappy. I was lucky to get a 2 hr stretch and most were one hour with a couple 45m thrown in.

Anyway, after 4 nights there is none to minimal crying and she goes 2-4 hr stretches which is pretty good in my book!

But nap times are not improving! She is crying for 20 and only napping for 20! Her average nap is 1-1.5 hours.

Was it harder for you to nap train? How much longer did it take?
