@meadow: we also have a 3 bedroom and the “spare room” is an office/guest room/junk room. It is 5 year old childproof right now but we’re about to take it up to 3 year old proof because the baby will move into the kids room and the 5 (almost 6) year old will do quiet time downstairs in her own area and LO2 still needs containment. So it’s going to take some creativity...We’ve also put one of the kids in our own bedroom with an activity for quiet time in a pinch.

@meadow: this is a big transition! I would encourage you to figure out the structure and spend some time setting it up and reinforcing it so that it is workable. I think it is important for kids and parents to have that break!

This is our set up—my kids share a room now but they are 8 and 5. This has been the framework since the 5 year old stopped napping at 3.

Quiet time lasts an hour or until I say it is over. We put one kid in their room and one in the living room.
Whoever is in the room with the less desirable toys can pick one or two to bring to the other room (box of magnatiles etc).
You can ask briefly for help but quiet time is not a time to talk to me.
When quiet time is over, they clean up (with help if needed) and then usually watch a show and have a snack.

I try to do something boring at the beginning of quiet time so playing looks more appealing than talking to me, like starting laundry or washing dishes. Once they are established I can sit down at the table or on the couch and not be too bothered.

I don’t know if that helps at all but it has been good for us.

@meadow: I will say, I dreaded the drop of nap, but once we were out the other side it was glorious to not be tied to that schedule. Outings (irrelevant now 😫) were no longer limited!
But also, we worked hard on independent play and quiet reading time, so I can usually get a break when I need one.

@MrsSRS: Thanks for the blog rec - I scrolled through some of her entries and it looks really great.

@MenagerieMama: I know - I hear that sentiment a lot. The kids tried to drop their naps.... but I am stubborn and I kept enforcing nap time. It was required they nap at school and I felt they still needed it. I won't say that that it was smooth sailing by any means - there were a LOT of hard spells, but in the end it was worth it.

I wish we had a spare room..... we are in a 3 bedroom house and the third bedroom is my husbands office and full of 80 billion computer things - there is no way we could ever close a child in there for an hour - haha.

@ChitownRo: Holy cow...I don't envy you at all - that is a ROUGH schedule!

@MrsSRS: This is the closest we could get I guess....one in the bedroom and one in the livingroom (where all the toys are)..... It just seems like an unfair split for the kids...... and not anywhere good for me to hide and have alone time.

I know I know...this is the magic of kids growing up - they won't be babies for ever. It just feels like a long time until the days I remember with my own mom reading her book of choice on the couch while my brother and I played in the basement or outside without murdering each other. HAHA. My kids will play together nicely for the most part - but when things go south.... they go south fast, so I still have to keep an ear on them and be sort of close. :-p

It’s tough to no longer have nap. You should get earlier bedtime to make up for it. Right now my kids are on opposite schedules - 2 yo up at 530 or 6 (but still naps), down for bed at 730. 6 year old up until 9, up at 7. Is tough bc have zero kid free time

So my oldest dropped her nap by 3, my middle by 2.5...so I'm amazed yours are napping still! I bet you'll get an earlier bedtime :)

My kids share a room (except for the baby, he's in with us, but soon it will be 3). We actually put LO1 in our spare room during quiet time so that she and her sister are in separate rooms. LO1 naturally likes time to herself to do things, but it's been a looooong learning process for LO2 to do it. One thing we do is have a music playlist on our echo dot that plays during quiet time - when it's done playing they can come out of their rooms.

Yes! The workspace for children teaches a class on this. On insta or Google that for the blog. Keeping quiet time is totally attainable.

I think shortening nap first is a great idea for kid sanity. For mom sanity I would start thinking about how you can implement quiet independent play. You'll need to start with a small amount of time probably only 10 minutes and then work your way up to an hour. And for what it's worth I had one child who kept napping at home after dropping the nap at school and one child who dropped the nap at home before dropping the nap at school. So you may be able to keep the nap at home for a while if it's not messing up bedtime.

So - I just found out that Sept 1 my twins (4yo) will no longer nap at school.

I knew this day was coming...and pre-covid I figured we would lose nap time at the beginning of summer when they did a half day summer camp program for the month of july.....

So I get completely that I am on borrowed time.

I don't have any illusion that my kids will sit quietly in their room for an hour to give me any sort of sanity break during the day.

Any tips for dropping naps without utilizing quiet time?

Sanity of mom wise?
Sanity of kid wise?

We are at 1.5 hour naps...I'm thinking next week I'll get them down to 1 hour....

(We are home until 9/1)

So sad. I love naptime.

I'm going to soak up the snuggles when I wake them up.

The end of an era :( :( :( :(

Glad to know I’m not alone. I was at a coffee shop yesterday working and there was a toddler napping in the stroller while the mom read a book!

My 2 year old hasn’t slept in a car seat or stroller for almost a year. Our parents live 2 hours away. Even if we leave their house at (or after) bedtime, in pjs, with his pacifier (which he only gets at bedtime) he is awake the entire ride. We recently traveled internationally and he was awake from 3am-8pm. We tried for hours to get him to sleep on the plane to no avail while another 2 year old was passed out in front of us. He was perfectly happy, just can’t sleep unless it’s in a dark room in a crib.

Dd almost never fell asleep in the car or stroller. She was a very good sleeper at home so I just assumed she was well rested. The only exception was if it was nap time and we were driving on a long trip then she would nap.

Ds often falls asleep in the car. Even when it’s not his nap time. He isn’t as good of a sleeper as dd at night so I figure that’s the difference...idk

Both of mine: Never ever in the stroller, in the car they can fall asleep but it’s a crappy sleep and whenever we get home they wake up, can’t go back down and are incredibly irritable basically until they go to bed for the night.

Also negatory: friends who are like, just come over for dinner and we’ll put the baby in this pack n play in a dark room and then you guys can go home at 11pm drunk with your wailing, hungry, unbathed baby.

My almost 2 year old never naps in a stroller or car seat and it really annoys me! She napped in her car seat when she was little (under 1 year) but now never does even if it’s a long ride at nap time. Stroller naps have never happened in her life! I’m so jealous when I see toddlers napping in strollers while their parents hang out! She sleeps well at home. Anyway, really just looking to see if we are the only ones. I feel like it’s probably too late to train her to sleep in a stroller. :bummed:

I would definitely be open to a bean bag, but my daughter wouldn't have kept it on her back at 13 months  We recently invested in Kyte Baby sleep sacks which are heavier than the usual Halo/A+A ones we'd been using with both our girls, and the extra weight/coziness seems to help DD2 sleep better. Look for a sale if you go for these - they're expensive full price!

@Jess1483: I was looking at those earlier today. I was trying to see if I could find one second hand since I’m just back working and money is tight.

Nested bean makes weighted sleep sacks. I wouldn’t use them for a tiny baby, but I’d feel comfortable at a year. All their advertising shows it on the tummy, but they say kids can wear them backwards. I’d feel better with this because it isn’t loose in the crib.

@Petitduck: a been bag is a good idea, then I could leave it there when I’m sleeping.

I would and have done the same as your daycare. I don’t keep it on all night. I have put a pillow on my kid for naps and it worked out great the few times I did it. I just watched on the monitor. I did think about sewing a bean bag and then I could put that on their back and leave it, but I never got around to it. It’s the same idea as that nested bean sleep sack but on the back. Makes sense as a comfort measure to me!
