@bhbee: we also love pre dinner screen time. And when I get home from teaching at 3:15pm for a bit so I can decompress aka go to my room and stare at a wall for 10 mins.

@ChitownRo: ok I want to be on this side of things!! Last night was terrible and I think it was my breaking point to give it up for good. Another good idea to save some screen time for dinner prep. I don’t care at all anymore about the nap “break” so the only thing I’m worried about is less drama between afternoon and dinner!

I’m in the same situation also with 3 kids. My almost 3 year old was becoming such a chore at bedtime. We’ve entirely stopped his nap for 1 month now and it’s so much better. Between summertime outdoor play and no naps, he’s consistently asleep from 730p-630a now with a quick bedtime process. Yes, post 4p is questionable (seems to injure himself more during that time), but basically I allow screens starting at 5 so I can make dinner. Then into the dinner, bath, books routine that takes until bedtime.

It’s so nice to not need to rush home for his nap. We can all stay out and about now. I don’t miss it at all

Our DS2 is 3 and we have some rough evenings too. He naps a few days per week. Popsicle bath is one of his favorite ways to relax. Giant bubble bath and a popsicle or two. Usually keeps him happy for a while! Sometimes just a few minutes outside to reset also even if it’s hot. Like a five min walk in the neighborhood.

@bhbee: we are in a similar situation! Napping is 3-year-olds is really tough and I agree it definitely messes with nighttime sleep. 3rd babies have fomo!. But they are a mess in the evening and it seems cruel to not give them sleep!
2 things .. I guess you have to decide if you want her to sleep in or go to bed earlier....can you wake her up always by 7am? I personally would rather hang with my kid at 7:00 a.m. than 9:00 p.m., he's such a puddle!
My 2.5 year old seems to be ready to drop weekend naps at least and fights us SO bad. #2...What about if you did a nap every other day? A lot of my mom' friends with kids this age do.

Also she might just need a cat nap. That seems to do pretty well for my 2 and 1/2-year-old. With a longer nap thrown in there every once in awhile.

This is our third kid, why does this still feel hard to figure out?? :silly:

Our youngest is almost 3. And as she is a screamer mixed with the 3 year old behaviors, I’m hesitant to give her less sleep. But my gut is telling me maybe she’s done.

If she sleeps any amount beyond a quick car nap she is up until 10pm. I’ve tried waking her up at an hour, even less, let her sleep longer for the whole sleep begets sleep idea, same result. Also skipping some days. She is sleeping in more for summer (between 7-8am) so maybe that’s taking her nap needs? But as I SAH with all 3 kids right now I really really need that evening time.

However on the days I’ve let her skip naps, she is pretty much a wreck from 4pm on and it’s tough to keep her happy. We can’t realistically go outside at that time here because it’s an inferno and she burns easily.

Should I cut off naps and if so, any tips on surviving 4pm to bed? Is there another nap strategy to take? In 2 months we’ll be back on getting up at 6:30am and she’ll have part time preschool, but only one day is past lunch so we have flexibility.

Thanks for any tips or just commiseration

@cake2017: my 14 month old wakes by 6 am daily and naps at 12:45, asleep by 1 and sleeps until 3. Has been on 1 nap for two months and was sleeping 7:30-6:30 before with a 2.5 hour nap, but is teething I think so sleeping in and napping longer has taken a hit.

@Clementine12: She’s good at night. I just put her down and she’s asleep. So I will see how today goes- I put her down at 6 last night and she slept till 630am. She has a pacifer so will be posting on how to wean from that in a month or so- she only has it for bedtime-naps. I did not use it for DS but she had a strong desire to suck as a baby and it worked so we’ve been on it.

Yep, same. Dropped around 13 months. His naps got short, 30-45 minutes short, and he fought them both. Transitioning to one nap at noon took a bit of time but was easier than I expected and he was ready. Stopped fighting his naps and went to 2-2.5 hours. She may not be able to make it to 1, especially at first, because 6 am - 1 pm is a long wake window. Can you be flexible during the transition and gradually get her used to stretching to 1 p.m.?

Hello- dd will be 14 months in 2 days- she’s been resisting the morning nap or takes it 45 mins. I prefer two naps a day it’s usually like this-

wake time 6-630
1st nap at 9am
lunch at noon
2nd nap at 1
dinner at 5
bed at 615-630.

now she is fighting both or they are very short.
I’d like to stay close to her three year old brother who naps at 1pm.

thoughts?

Today I put her down at 1230pm...

I must keep the bedtimes the same and wake times. she sleeps through the night- i don’t go in because she sleeps or settles in 5 mins...

@Alba4: I agree about sleeping better at night if no nap. I like to have the quiet time during the day, though! :silly: I have a gate at the top of my stairs, so I now still nap both girls are the same time. My big girl will sometimes run around the upstairs and I've added some toys up there for her to play with. But she will eventually lay down in her bed to nap more days than not. So its all worked out just fine.

Naps weren’t affected by converting to beds. Both my kids moved to a bed at around 3 or 3.5. My youngest is turning 4 in a couple of days and he is totally dropping the nap. The only reason I try to nap him these days is if I have to teach a Zoom class and it is easier if he is resting. He sleeps much better through the night at this point if he doesn’t nap... end of an era😢

My DD is 2y3mo and has basically stopped napping. She has always been an awesome night sleeper though and was a good napped until 22mos. We put her in her crib for nap time every day though anyway and she just sings and plays happily. I have no plans to stop. We do a super early bedtime (like 6:30) and she sleeps ~13 hours at night. Since we’re stuck at home I love this schedule since I still get a break during the day but she goes to bed early. When I was commuting this bedtime would have sucked but now it’s fine.

Both of my kids sleep low sleep needs, and it sucks. My son only ever napped for max 90 min after about 18 months, and dropped it completely a couple weeks before age 3. My daughter is 2y4m and only needs mayyyybbbbbeeee an hour, most of the time it's just a car nap.

They both have a lot of trouble falling asleep at night, too, despite all the recommendations. So we use melatonin and it's been a lifesaver. 1mg nightly for my 4 year old and just started the 2yr old on .5mg.

I’m waiting for her to fall asleep so I have a lot of free time here ... 😬

LO3 is 22 months and I already feel like she doesn’t need a nap every day. She doesn’t seem to have high sleep needs and she’s probably also wanting to be up with the big kids, but I NEED this nap from her especially if school is part time in the fall for the big kids.

Last night she fell asleep around 9pm after bedtime around 8pm ... was rocking and rolling in the crib until then. (She had napped about 12-2 yesterday.) She has been teething and ended up in our bed around 5 and up by 7. Tried nap at 12ish today ... it’s 1:40 here and she’s been singing and dancing and playing the whole time (in the crib at least!). I’ll probably just get her up soon because if she sleeps much past 2 she wants to go to bed even later.

Is there any hope this is just a phase? Should I never let her sleep more than an hour? I miss my oldest who napped amazingly!

Plan to keep up crib time for a while regardless of actual sleeping. Being home full time with her siblings (5 and 8) for months I think she’s just decided she’s big too!

Thanks for all of these responses! She has napped once since we made the switch almost a week ago. She have otherwise been sneaking around upstairs and playing quietly. Fine, I suppose. She gets tired, though, and her sister wakes up from her own nap refreshed and wanting to play. Makes for a *fun* new witching hour at my house.

@meadow: Absolutely. I did that a while ago for my other girl. And I've been working from home so not always a lot of time to get outside for long. This has all certainly been an interesting time.

@agold: can you add some extra physical exertion in the AM?

I took my kids on walks (with big hills) last summer at 3yo to tire them out more after we switched to beds

That’s a tough one at 4. My oldest switched to a bed at 2.5 and kept napping until I cut it, but she always slept more for her age. My son switched a bit before 3 and for him it was definitely the end. The consolation prize for me is always earlier, easier bed times!

Both my kids switched to a big bed at 18m. Lo1 stopped napping at 3y and I think Lo2 will be at 2..5.
