No advice because we are still using a pacifier at 2.5. But our pediatrician said it’s fine to keep until 3ish if it helps with sleep, and so did my friend who is an orthodontist. She said it really doesn’t affect teeth until 4. Is there a reason you want to drop it now? We only use it at night but I am terrified to drop it bc she is such a good sleeper!

ETA: I have heard it’s easier to drop before 18 mos or after 3.

Good luck. No matter what route you decide to take, its gonna be tough for a couple days, but, it'll be over before you know it. We were super late at taking away DD1's pacifier (like, right before she turned 3...I know, I know!!) but just like everyone else has said, it was hard for a day or two, and then she was completely fine. I don't know when we're going to wean DD2 from hers (she's 7 months, I'm not ready yet lol) but I know it'll be earlier than the first time.

I weaned from night time pacifier at 7 months old when we sleep trained for night time sleeping. He was still using it for naps and long car rides until he was 18 months old. In hindsight I wish I had weaned him off the pacifier completely when we did nap sleep training at 9 months old. We finally ditched the pacifier when he was 18 months old, and it was 2 hard days, but then it was totally fine. We just took them away and that was it. I think we may have given him a 1 day heads up and talked to him about it.

Ehhh no advice here. My 23 month old has it for bedtime and weekend naps. Not at daycare. When my oldest was almost 2.5 she was on a similar schedule. We had her make a Build A Bear with it. But DD2 is too young to comprehend that. Meanwhile she keeps biting pacifiers into pieces sooo...

@cake2017: At my daughter's 18 month appointment the doctor told us to stop using it. We normally gave it to her whenever she needed it so we started at the beginning of one week and only gave it to her for nap time and bed time and then after that week, took it away completely. We had about 3 rough nights and then she basically forgot about it.

Maybe you can start to take it away during nap time for a little while and then take away completely? Our doctor said to try and make sure she had a lovie or blanket to replace it with if that makes sense.

Good luck!!

Hey!

My main questions are how and when? She only uses it for nap and bedtime. She does not have it any other times. Doc said to do it soon and just throw them out. I am curious to hear from moms who have experience and thoughts on how to go about this. She is teething and sleeps through the night. i know when I do it there will be some hiccups because she depends on it but I would love to hear any methods that worked and how old your child was when they stopped using the pacifier. TIA!

Did you buy the 18m+ ones? I find those take longer to chew holes through. But my 2.5 year old does the same and I don’t want to phase out right now either bc she is such an awesome sleeper with them. We do replace them a lot!

Our third just turned 2. She’s chewed holes in pacis before but slowly - well now I got a couple new ones last week and she’s crying right now about how they’re broken because she chewed holes already and she doesn’t want to nap without them.

Usually I would say, ideal time to phase them out. But I’m virtual schooling 2 older kids right now and I need all the toddler happiness I can get! (And sleep crutches for naps!)

Anyone had luck stopping or avoiding the chewing? Is a pack of pacifiers a week the price I pay for a little quiet during virtual school?? 😂

I never gave either of my kids a paci. I figured it would be one less habit to break down the road!

My oldest never seemed to be missing out. My second went through an intense finger sucking phase from 4–9 months. Then it was over. Their dentist is very happy :)

My son refused the pacifier several times at the beginning that we just assumed it wasn't for him. Then while staying with my in-laws over Christmas when he was 6 months old, he was waking up the whole house with his middle of the night cries and I felt terrible so I went to the grocery and bought pacifiers to try. That began a 2 year love affair with pacifiers. When my daughter came along, she wasn't a fan at first but eventually came around when she was a month or so old. We just weaned her a few months ago at age 2.

So my DS2 was REALLY late to take a pacifier - like 3-4 months late. While we started offering it in the NICU he didn't really take to it for a LONG time. Since he is a twin and his sister took one from early on and they shared a crib he suddenly started taking it long after we had given up. Now he is an addicted 2 year old ;)

@BadgerMom: we have been having this issue too with our 5 week old baby girl. She took a pacifier in the hospital no problem but barely ever since. You put it in her mouth and she either spits it out and looks offended or spits it out and starts gagging. I’ve tried different ones too thinking maybe the one was too big for her mouth? But nope, same case for all of them. Every once in a while we can get her to take one but not very often.

I am EBF and we give her a bottle at night of my milk. Sometimes she takes it right away and other times acts like it’s the pacifier and we have to fight her a little bit to finally take it. When that happens, I squeeze the nipple a bit so she gets the milk and realizes it is ok to take it! Haha picky little girl we have on our hands!

I understand that not taking the pacifier can be good but I do wish she would take it at night to calm down a little when I put her to bed. Good luck to you!!

@ALV91711: Agreed re thumb/pacifier. I have a few cousins that were thumb suckers and it definitely screwed up their teeth/pallet big time.

@BadgerMom: LO1 hated pacifiers and caught a good fight against the bottle. LO2 was more chill in general. He did eventually take the pacifier on occasion but he was never too attached to it. I would have forgotten that he ever used it except he has it in our family portrait on year. I don't have any tips. I tried everything to get LO1 to take one so I think it was just the individual preference.

Just want to offer the perspective that if she doesn’t take it, it’s not the end of the world!
My first loved his and used it till 3 (sleep only).
My 2nd just turned a year. We tried for a couple of months and it honestly caused more trouble than it was worth. He wasn’t that into it but we would plug him with it for sleep and then he would purposely spit it out but then be upset/wake himself up over it.
Finally decided that he was crying over the pacifier anyway so why not just completely get rid of it. We kept forcing it on him thinking that it would keep him calm but it really wasn’t doing anything so we just stopped. It’s actually been really really nice that he doesn’t use it. It’s one less thing to worry about when we’re out and about or when we’re going on a trip. We don’t have to have them stashed everywhere in case of emergency. I don’t have to wean him off of it now or when he gets older and is even more attached to it. He still slept through the night when he was 4-5mo (we sleep trained, which also was easier IMO because it was one less sleep crutch to worry about).

Bottom line - there are pros and cons to both scenarios but overall I’d say more pros to not taking one. So don’t stress too much if your efforts are fruitless. It doesn’t mean you’re doomed to bad sleep or constant fussiness. :-)
It’s still early days, so def try if you want to but don’t be afraid to throw in the towel.

@Miss Ariel: This was pretty much our experience with my second.
I really pushed the paci because I didn't want to end up with finger suckers but she wasn't really into it until closer to 3 months. She really grew to depend on it though and we just eliminated it completely when she turned 3 a few weeks ago.
We had the best luck with the Avent ortho ones, they seemed like the smallest for her tiny mouth at the time.

Yes! We were kind of torn about whether to try to get her to like it or not, but we kept offering it throughout the first several months because she was hard to soothe. It was a gradual thing, but she loves it now at 10 months. I'd say she's been using it consistently to fall asleep since maybe 3-4 months. But she's no where near as dependent on it as our other two were-she uses it if it's there, but can get herself to sleep without it and does regularly in the car or in the middle of the night. And she doesn't wake up as soon as it falls out. I don't offer it during the day unless she's sick or really fussy for some other reason, so it's mostly just a sleeping thing.

With my first I tried every brand to try and get her to like it but she just never did. And she definitely used me as a pack instead. But then as she got older we never had to worry about breaking the habit so That was a plus I guess. She also hardly took bottles at all, something I didn’t fight too hard since I stayed home anyway.
My younger one I half heartedly tried, she didn’t care for them, and I gave up early. But she also refused bottles almost entirely despite trying early and often. We survived but that was hard.

We trained or daughter to like one. As a newborn she never used one, around 6 weeks she’d take it sometimes, but by the time I went back to work at 10 weeks she was all about it.

LO1 took to the paci easily and we just finally took it away right before she turned 4 😬😬 She was never a paci fiend, but used it for sleep and in the car up until the end.

LO2 never took one. I tried a few kinds but She never picked it up and we actually a pretty could sleeper as a newborn so it was ok. And then I just kept thinking how if she didn’t use it that when we finally took away LO1s that we would be done w pacis for good! I had a few moments as she got older (and after her permanent 4 month sleep regression) that I thought about trying again but I figured it was nice to have one thing to not have to transition away from eventually.

Anyway, so not a success story but also if she never takes it it will be ok too!

@BadgerMom: me!! My daughter (6.5 months now) was almost entirely ebf and had zero interest in the paci, almost from day 1. She used to spit them out and look so offended. She was colicky this fall and I was trying HARD to get her to take one around 1-2 months, no sale. I gave up and left them in her drawer with all her diapers and nose frida and stuff. Then the week she started daycare at exactly 4 months, my babysitter found them during a particularly fussy witching hour one night, and not knowing her history popped in a Nuk, baby girl took it like a fish to water and I just about died of gratitude and relief. She now likes them and we use them when she’s fussy or tired, but she’s not dependent on them. It has made life SO much easier. the Nuk is the only one she likes, have you tried it? She hated the avent and mam (which my son liked).

Unsolicited advice: may I recommend that daddy do a daily bottle feeding starting now— we had a bottle rejection from hell which I believe was related to the paci rejection. It resolved right when she started daycare and she drank for them with no problem and then instantly began accepting a bottle at home too (so likely why the babysitter was able to get her to take the Nuk) but it was really stressful and I was kicking myself for getting lax about bottle exposure.

DS1 never took a soother ever and hated the bottle.

DS2 is 6 months and I tried all different soothers from the beginning and he just has no interest. He is ok with the bottle. He has liked sucking on his hands and in the last few days has been sucking his thumb. I’d really rather a soother than the thumb since you can eventually take it away.
