A close friend of mine (she lives out of town) is having a very challenging year. She's had covid twice, her husband is struggling with long covid, her father passed from covid in the fall, and on Sunday night (her birthday) her brother passed away unexpectedly in a motorcycle accident. Ugh. I would like to do something for her that's more than just flowers but I am not sure what's appropriate. I was thinking this "strength" necklace (https://www.bryananthonys.com/collections/empowerment/products/strength?variant=12242764791889) and maybe a gift card to a spa? Something she could do for herself that would be a mental break from what she has going on? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Does anyone who wears disposable masks have any recs? I dont even know where to begin on amazon to find ones that are a) legit protective b) arent smelly (my initial searches found ones listed as super chemical smell......which doesn't seem healthy ...hah)

How did you celebrate your littles 1st birthday?

My 40th birthday is in a few weeks and I'm getting a barrage of questions about what I'd like to get. Except I can't have any of the things that I love most - traveling solo, traveling in general, and fancy foodie meals with my husband. I've never been a big "stuff" person - I don't wear much jewelry (especially now, I'm basically WFH permanently and will be post-pandemic so it's athleisure and my Apple watch for pretty much ever LOL), I'm very low key on my wardrobe, I have all the tech I can ask for, so I really have nothing to offer all the well intended folks and I really don't want to be that person who just asks for money and gift cards (which I would stash for the road trip I was planning to take for my birthday and am holding off on until it's safe). So tell me what YOU would ask for for a big birthday - maybe I'll find some inspiration I hadn't considered :)

Another "talk me off a ledge" request :)

My daughter's school just held a virtual assembly called "Diversity Circus." It was a recorded session, 40 minutes worth of basic magic tricks that loosely tie in into generic concepts like "be fair, be respectful, etc." Hosted by a white performer, recorded in front of a fully white kid audience. There was nothing particularly problematic with it (other than calling MLK's speech a "fantasy" and putting cultural objects on a bunch of white kids to demonstrate how these objects are different but also the same) but then I Googled the guy and he's a Covid denier/anti-masker. It's his personal FB page, and it's public and he obviously has the right to espouse his opinions, but my brain hurts to think that we spent money on something so generically boring to begin with and gave it to someone who's posting about how masks are actually the problem, not Covid. So I think the right answer is probably to leave it alone, but I'm definitely twitchy to say something to the PTA, which arranged this whole thing. Thoughts?

Anybody finding a face mask that they love and can talk a lot in?

I've realized the masks I love are great when I go to the grocery store ... where smiling is the most facial movement that happens really.

When I wear them and try to hold a conversation for any extended period of time they slip down and are not functioning without fiddling.

A friend suggested I buy over the head elastic ones instead of over the ear (I've been putting on my ear ones by twisting the elastic to make them tighter already.) However this friend is a man who shaves his head. Looking for some advice from women......

I have shoulder length curly hair and I'm a teacher. I'm hoping not to have to wear a pony tail daily come fall just so I can get a mask to fit and not get all tangled up. :( [Pony tails give me a headache]

In the end, my priority is being safe with wearing a mask... any advice fellow mammas?

I received an email yesterday thanking me for my $50 gofundme donation. I did not make the donation. I went to the campaign and saw a donation made in my name (well, an abbreviated version of my first name that I never use, plus my last name). The donation was made mere minutes after the campaign was opened. I'm sure its a fraud. I can't reach anyone at gofundme. I contacted the person running the campaign, who purports to be the adult daughter of the dead person and she has responded to me twice but, again, this is all screaming fraud because she didn't respond like a normal f'ing person. Has anyone else had a problem with gofundme? Why can't I reach anyone at gofundme? (Similarly, I'm convinced amazon is also a racket, but that's another story for another day.) Please share any experience you have because this is just crap I don't feel like dealing with during my "work at home during crisis" time.

Morbid topic I know but dh and I are getting everything in order (life insurance, wills etc) and I need to know how you picked guardians for your kid(s) if you both passed.

First I can't even barely think about it. It kills me (no pun intended) to think of someone else raising my babies....

Dh is adamant that we name his parents. They are the most financially stable and clearly they raised him and his siblings..... However, I'm not 100% in. Eek, I.see the issues he and his sibs have and I'm sorry but his parents had to have contributed and his parents still work

I'd prefer my mom...but she's a widow..with meager financial means. But she'd be completely devoted to them... But I'll admit I'm not her biggest fan. But obviously she raised me and my brother..

My brother is a no go.

My husbands sisters are also not really that appealing. One is almost 40, single, lives in NYC and isn't a kid kinda person. Although shes probably the most stable and most likely choice..

The other sister is a mess.... And is a no go

How do you pick????? I feel Iike I've rambled too.much but I'm trying to give an idea of the quandary I am in.

Tell me what you did to decide. Especially if it wasn't clear cut

Every October artist on the internet get together and follow different prompt lists and have to draw art in some form of ink. It’s under the hashtag #inktober Or #inktober2019 You can look for it on twitter and Instagram. I’ve seen some really cool stuff. This is my 3rd year participating in it! I plan on and hope I can make it to the end of the month. So far I’ve done one for each day but it’s only day 3 so we will see how it goes.

I just thought this would be an interesting question for all ladies. What are some "secret" or low key hobbies or interests you have? Could be something you love doing or just something you're interested in. Like do you have favorite show or things you do most people when they met you wouldn't expect.

I'll start. I do not match most stereotypes when it comes to being a "nerd" a lot of people never knew I was into this kind of stuff growing up. I get very embarrassed talking about it with other moms especially at pick up or events. I play DnD and Magic the Gathering every other week with a few close friends. My husband and I actually do this together and love collecting MTG cards and I love collecting dice. Im an artist and even though I do a lot realistic portraits I enjoy drawing fantasy art and my big dream has always been to get my artwork in DnD books or on a magic card. I hardly talk about it with family and most people I met. A few friends know but thats it. 🙈🙈🙈

Thanks event organizing mamas! (I am thinking PTO moms might have some insights here!)

Wanted to gift my SIL a prenatal massage. She lives in Arlington/Annandale (?) border but works in Fairfax. I do not live in that area but some cities that we've stayed at when we go visit is Tysons Corner, Mclean?

Anyone have any great massage places that specializes in prenatal? I can yelp it but just wanted to make sure it isn't a sketch place

We were staying at an Airbnb this week and my toddler bought a $20 movie on the host’s roku. We did not realize it at the time and figured that the kids had just found the movie on a subscription that the host already had. After our stay I got a message from the host asking for the $20.

My issue is why in the world would the host not password protect their roku?! On ours you have to put in a password to do anything that costs money. Plus, now they own the movie, we don’t even get to keep it!

I’m just irritated by the whole situation. If you were in this situation would you just pay the $20 or fight them on it since they should have it require a password?

*I also know that it’s ultimately our fault for not supervising the kids better while using the tv but they know how to use a roku remote and we were trying to pack up to leave. I just assumed that they wouldn’t have it so that random Airbnb people could buy stuff using their credit card!

This is a spin off from another thread that talks about public urination, as I am wondering:

- Are you aware people urinate in swimming pools?
- Are you OK with it?
- If you (or your LOs) need to go, a bathroom is right next to the pool, would you opt to pee in the pool or get out to use the bathroom?

I have been naively assuming that people would not urinate in the pool. Yes of course there is always "a few" but I always assumed most people won't. It was from the other thread that I was brought to the awareness that "a lot of" people would pee in the pool and they are OK with it. I told DH this morning and he was also shocked (and wondering who am I talking to about this info lol).

Thoughts?

So I ordered something (kids apparel item) online from a large nationwide chain store in size 8. Instead of filling the order as expected, I received quantity 8 of the item. I double checked my receipt and I didn't pay for them.

What would you do with the extra 7?
