I'm looking for resources that would help my son gain some confidence around dogs and learn some basics about what to do when a dog approaches.

My six year old son is generally pretty fearless except when it comes to dogs. It started last year when we were playing with some other kids in a wide open area. DS ran to another location and their hearding dog tried to bring DS back to the fold. DS is typically fast but I could tell he was running for his life from this dog. We discussed what happened and DS logically knows the dog wasn't trying to hurt him but he has so much fear associated with it.

Today we were camping and an unleashed dog ran up to our picnic table while DS was sitting there alone. I was at the car not far away but far enough not to see it coming. The dog looked super friendly and just excited to play but DS started screaming and crying and tried to hide under the table which was not a great idea because that put him screaming in the dogs face. The dog couldn't hear it's owners call him back and I was concerned even this very friendly looking dog wouldn't react well to DS's unexpected reaction.

I'm not scared of (friendly) dogs but I'm allergic so I've never gotten super comfortable with them. I mainly want to give DS tools so he doesn't escalate the situation.

We lost our family dog today. He was very old (best guess 15-16) but we weren’t prepared for it. DD is 2 and seems to sort of get it. We told her he died and that meant that his body stopped working and we wouldn’t get to see him anymore. But she loved him very much and I’m worried that we aren’t going to be able to know what she needs. I’m wondering if anyone else on here went through the loss of a pet with a young child and if you would recommend any resources. Pic of DD “reading” to our dog just before Christmas 😭

If you were going to get your lo a small pet, what would you get?

Los (3 and 6) had a beta fish for about a year and a half that just died. We also have two dogs, but they really liked having a low-ish maintenance pet that lived in their shared room. We already have a tank, but are thinking about other pets that could live inside. I had a hamster growing up and don’t remember it being too much work, and it could be a bit more fun/interactive than a fish...

What would you get?

So this is understandably a sensitive topic for many people out there I assume so my apologies to anyone who is appalled!

We adopted two guinea pigs for my daughter’s birthday 1.5 years ago. It’s become very clear in that time that she can’t actually take care of them which we should have known ahead of time. She can’t clean the cage because it’s so messy, and it makes a big mess when she feeds them their pellets and straw. It makes a massive mess when they play with them—shavings everywhere etc. So it is up to me to care for them—whilst working full time and now being 32 weeks pregnant.

Again, we should have had the foresight to realize guinea pigs were going to be messy pets that a child under 8 can’t take care of on their own. I always had cats growing up so didn’t realize the investment that goes into taking care of an indoor caged animal (I swear chickens are easier).

My husband has been begging me to get rid of the guinea pigs for months. With another baby on the way I am considering it for the first time. Again I know this must sound horrible to some, but I am also sure there must be a family out there who could take much better care of them. We have talked to our girls multiple times about the need to take more responsibility and better care of them so while they would be sad it wouldn’t come as a complete shock. They go through phases of playing with them a lot and then basically not at all. My parents are also likely getting another dog soon so that would overshadow it all.

I would love to hear thoughts, opinions, and insights. Has anyone had to say goodbye to a pet because they couldn’t care for them the way they should be cared for, or because it was too overwhelming? We would be sure to go through the proper channels to make sure the guinea pigs found a safe home.

I love dogs so much. I grew up with them. But now having my own kids, I'm getting increasingly more leery. I just read about the Utah boy whose hand/arm was bitten off by a neighbor's dog.

If you don't like your kids to be around dogs, do you ask people to put their dogs away when you go to their homes?

This is a two part question:
1. Has anyone done immunotherapy (allergy shots/desensitization) for car or dog dander? I’m allergic to both. I’m a big cat person but in college developed asthma when I had a cat living in the house and had to give it to a coworker. I’m toying with the idea of getting desensitized but am wondering if it’s worth it. Daily shots for a week, then weekly shots for like 7 months than monthly shots to bring everything to a total of 5-6 years. And there’s likely a $20 copay so it costs a bunch. I did allergy shots for bees because I was severely allergic but I was a kid and they let my parents, who are nurses, give the shots at home so we didn’t have copays or office visits.

2. Any recommendations for non furry pets? I like pets for the cuddle factor but maybe my kids would like a lizard or something. Fish are out—been there done that and the kids have no interest. If we had a barn I’d do a barn cat because we know a lot of people who have barns and barn cats but our garage just wouldn’t cut it.

We have a nearly 12 year old Newfoundland dog that was recently found to have cancer that is quite advanced. He really doesn’t have long. We haven’t told our 3 and 6 year olds yet. We are telling them about the cancer tonight and if it naturally leads to the topic of euthanasia we will discuss that with them as well. I know there are a handful of books out there that address pet loss but I am wondering if anyone has one that they recommend in particular.

DD and DS really want a puppy and DH is onboard. He loves dogs. I am not a dog person but seeing how they interact with other dogs I really want to get somthing small like a long Charles spaniel.
If you both work outside the home does your dog just stay in all day or do you do doggy care? How do you balance all your other responsibility with caring for a dog?

Out daughter has been asking for a puppy for about a year now. Well, she wants both a dog and a unicorn.

Some friends have puppies available, and they would give us a really good deal on one. Plus, we know the parents of the puppies are calm, child friendly dogs.

To be honest, I hadn't really considered getting a dog until much later when DD could totally take care of it herself. But she wants one so badly, and I think she's a little lonely (her sister is only a baby, and we live in the middle of no where without other kids nearby). What would you do?

My mom just texted me that her dog ran out the front door. She lives in Tahoe and it’s supposed to be 15 degrees tonight. My dad is driving around looking for him and she’s staying in case he shows up. He’s microchipped but they live in the edge of a busy highway. I’ve never had dogs so I have no idea what to do. Any quick ideas for getting him home safe? He is literally their baby.

We had to put our older dog down today unexpectedly- he is old but he declined within hours. We are both reeling from the shock of it. I had a colored pencil drawing done of him years ago and have his collar on that but I'd like to do something else. He is being cremated and we are spreading his ashes at the beach. I was thinking a small album? DH is really struggling it's his dog- we adopted him full grown 11 years ago. It's been a tough one.

Also DD keeps walking around saying he's gone and saying find him. Any books we could read about the loss of a pet?

We have always wanted to get a dog and now that our oldest is old enough to ask for one, he asks for one ALL the time. He's almost 5 and then we've got DS2 who is 2 and another baby on the way due end of June/early July. My thought is let's wait until the youngest is around 3 or 4. Seems so far away but I feel like by that time, everyone will be potty trained and our oldest will be old enough to have some dog responsibilities.

What do you think is the ideal time to get a family dog?

Hi ladies....
When you are solo parenting with multiple children, how do you get out to walk the dog? DH has beeen travelling a ton lately.

On weekends it's easier as I just take everyone for a walk, but my biggest problem is before work during the week.
I have started getting up at the crack of dawn and trying to take him quickly while kids are sleeping.... for a less than ideal 10 min or so, but I'm always afraid that they will wake up and panic if they can't find me. They are also old enough to get into trouble when I'm gone (3, 1.5)

Anyone have a brilliant solution? I also fee bad for the dog as he generally has more like 1-2h of walking during the day when both of us are home.

My son loves me more than the dog though. 1 out of 2 isn't too bad?

Tomorrow I have to have my dog put to sleep. She was diagnosed with cancer in October and has deteriorated to the point that she peed in our bed twice this weekend and can no longer go up and down the stairs. Her poor little leg is huge and being a basset hound, it is putting tremendous pressure on her other front leg. She's only 6 years old and she is my husband's dog, and he is having a really hard time with this. I love her, and I feel guilty that in the past few years she has gotten way less attention because of the kids. I don't know what to say to my three year old. She will notice that Winger is gone, but she doesn't understand death yet. It's just an all around crappy situation. I will never not have a dog, but this end of life stuff is so awful.

Dh and I have decided to find a new home for our 3 year old lab. I'm heartbroken, but I think it's best for him. I used to run 5-6 days a week and had time in my schedule to frequent the dog park. Between injury and a second child, I'm not running for the foreseeable future. It's not about baby no 2, but it was a very rough pregnancy and recovery and it's going to take a while to run again. Running with me was his main exercise. Both my and dh's schedules have changed also, and I no longer have time before work to take our dog to the dog park. And now at least three days a week he's home alone for 10+ hours due to dh's work schedule. This wasn't a change we expected.
We love him and he is well taken care of, but I know he wants and needs more exercise and attention. He is a very social and high energy dog.

Ds usually is pretty indifferent to him. Sometimes he's really lovey and gives him treats and hugs, and other times he says he's a bad dog and wants him to get away.

How do I approach this with ds? I think he will be sad but not devastated. He just really doesn't seem that bonded with him. If he was I Think we'd work harder to try to change things, though I'm not sure how.

How much do we involve him in the process? Any advice is appreciated.

As they have gotten older (both pet and child) how has their relationship changed?

My daughter didn't pay much attention to our dog for some time. Now, she cares for her. She feeds her, takes her outside, gives her treats. She also requested our dog sleep in her room so now, Thumper goes to bed when our daughter does. :)

Right now, my two dogs have not shown any signs of aggression. I was staying a family member's house recently and for the first time I saw their dog growl at one of the babies. I was shocked. I definitely more cautious around the dog and made sure the dog was in another room while the babies were playing.

My youngest was napping, our cat (which we've had since the day before our youngest was born) was sleeping with her like she does every single day. I heard Charlie start screaming and ran in her room to find her covered in blood. Her entire head was gushing blood and I couldn't tell where it was coming from exactly, or if she needed stitches or...

So I called 911, they had me apply pressure and sent an emt, by the time they got here the bleedi g had mostly stopped. I felt so silly for calling them for what now looked like a cat scratch. It was scary, there was so much blood.

Do you think I overreacted?

Ever since we got a dog, bedtime with our daughter has been so much easier! She just snuggles up with our dog, and passes out by herself.

Anyone else's dog put your kids down at night?

If you have dogs (especially big dogs) how did you prepare them for the arrival of a new baby? How did you ensure that they wouldnt do anything stupid to a new baby? Did your dogs react differently to your baby vs to other children? Thanks!

We have two cats we got as kittens 4 years ago. One of the cats has allergies and gets what is called "rodent ulcers." When she has a flare up her lips get swollen and split open and we have to take her to the vet for a shot and pills, it costs $120 per visit including the shots and pills. To keep the ulcers away we keep her inside and feed her a prescription food which costs $65.00 a bag, which lasts 4-6 weeks. If we keep her in doors and make sure she only eats the prescription food, she can go 3-5 months with out a flare up.

Now, we had our first baby 6 months ago and the cats are not handling it well. They've been peeing around the house to show their displeasure. Tonight someone peed in the nursery and I am at wits end! I want to give them away on Craig's List but I don't think anyone will want my allergy cat.
What would you do? List the cats anyway with full disclosure and see if someone takes them? Euthanize the allergy cat and get rid of the other one? Keep both cats out of the kindness in your heart even though they have peed on two comforters in the past 6 months and you can't get the smell out and are very angry?

I quit my job to stay home with the baby and money is tight, it's getting harder and harder to justify these cats.
