Anyone here have chickens? We're planning on getting some this spring. I'm reaching out to friends to see if anyone has any older laying hens, but of course, we also *need* chicks :)

What are your fav chicken resources? We are in MT and get hot summers and cold winters. Our coop won't have power (it freaks me out as a fire hazard!) so def doing the deep litter method. Also we live on a large property so our chickens will be (mostly) free range.

Our kids are pumped! Tell me all the things! :)

So I know we’re late to the pandemic-pet-party but my husband and I decided last week to get a puppy - my parents got one about a year ago and the boys (5 and 7) have been asking ever since. This is the first dog for both of us, so I’m looking for advice! What do we need? What should we do? What should we NOT do?

And just because I’m so excited, a picture - she’s a labradoodle, we’re going to name her Lucy, and we get to pick her up the weekend of Sept 18.

Does anyone have a Bernedoodle? We are looking to get a mini bernedoodle but it’s hard to find breeders and availability. We were waiting till our boys turned 10 to look into adding a dog to the family and they just turned 10 but now covid is making it tough to find puppies/dogs. Any leads would help.

My cousin is a dog breeder and she sold an entire litter in 4 hrs! She said she's never done that before.

We are also adopting a puppy this weekend. We've always kinda known we'd end up here but with no school and I'm outta work and dh is working from home we decided to take the plunge and adopt from a shelter....

We're so crazy that IF they have an older dog as well that fits into our home we might adopt two!!!!

My cousin said everyone has gone "Corona crazy"...lol

My dog is 14 (I think), as she can't really hold it all the time, we always leave a pee pad out when we're not home/for overnight.

Anyway, for the past month or so, I don't know what her problem is! She has woken me up at 3am, 5am, and usually again just before 7am to go out. She isn't allowed upstairs, so she stands by the stairs and whines. If I don't come down, she barks, so usually I jump out of bed hearing her whine to avoid waking the kids up. Girls room have loud white noise on but still! If she keeps barking, it will wake them up.

Mind you I'm in my 3rd tri and already not sleeping well so this is REALLY not working for me. DH is currently stuck in the girls room, but it's not like I want ANYONE to be getting up MOTN for the dog! We love her endlessly and she is already spoiled rotten, but she has the pee pads!

I was jokingly saying I should get a muzzle for overnight, but in my sleep deprived pregnant stage, I don't know if I'm really joking. Would that be cruel?! Do I try to let her "bark it out" and let her realize no one is coming to let her out?

If you have a mouthy and/or excitable dog, how long did it take them to adjust to a new baby? We have had a 3 year old rescue for about a year. He's a little better than when we first got him, but he's part yellow lab, we think, so he's very jumpy and mouthy. He will nip at anyone, mouth our clothes, etc. He's never being aggressive, it's just how he interacts. We've tried dog training but it's only gotten a little better. Our 6 year old can either push him away, leave, or get our help. But we came home with our newborn this afternoon, and Jack is being crazy. He's trying to jump on her, bit her hat, and tried to nip at her several times. He also got really anxious/ excited when she cried, but that seems normal and tolerable. I don't know what the line should be in terms of how long we wait for him to adjust or what behavior we should tolerate. He's mostly a very sweet good boy, but I can't have him jumping all over us and biting us while I'm nursing and he can't be locked up in the kitchen for forever. Thoughts?

Our elderly cat was just diagnosed with diabetes ... we are so overwhelmed by all of this. He's had life-long bladder issues (mostly controlled by prescription food and diligent litter box cleanings), and over the last few weeks, he's been peeing all over our basement ... it's disgusting and frustrating. While at the vet, they did full bloodwork and a urinalysis: everything else is fine with his bladder, so the vet assumes the peeing is a side effect of the diabetes.

We're now facing twice daily injections + the high cost of insulin & monitoring. Re-homing isn't on our radar, because he's a "problem cat". The peeing issue is truly awful, and if it was just diabetes, we'd absolutely be up for this new chapter. I feel guilty for considering euthanasia, but unless you'd had a male cat peeing all over your house, you can't fathom how horrible it can be.

Soooo, while we weigh our options, I'm curious about those of you who have been through this. Is at-home monitoring possible? What equipment do you use? Our vet is saying we have to bring him in every 2 weeks until the diabetes is controlled for glucose monitoring ($150+ each visit). We absolutely cannot afford that, on top of the equipment and medication costs.

I've found the insulin (Glargine/Lantus), but it looks like it'll expire before we use the entire vial - does that matter?

I appreciate advice and solidarity from those of you who have been through this before!!

We sold our house at the end of April and ended up moving in with my parents while we look for a new one. Meanwhile, our cat has been staying with my brother right next door.

Out cat has been 100% indoor since we adopted her about a year ago and we've never had any issue. My brother has a medium size outdoor dog who was indoor/outdoor all the way up until the cat had been there for maybe 2 weeks.

So now we are dealing with a flea infestation. I've been spraying the cat weekly, using drops between her shoulders + a flea collar. We have evacuated and bug bombed his house and STILL there are fleas.

We close on our new home next Friday, June 7th. We have a grooming appointment for the cat next Wednesday June 5th. I don't really want her to go back to my brothers house after that because I don't want to deal with fleas in my new home.

I have three options:
1) I can ask my MIL if the cat can stay with her after the appointment, Wednesday to Friday.

2) I can bomb my brothers house again while the cat is at her appointment and hope the best.

3) I can board her somewhere?

My mom is absolutely not going to let the cat stay with us those few days. So WWYD? Any thing I haven't thought of?

You ladies always give sound advice. Maybe you can help.

My husband sister was getting rid of a cat she has had since he was a baby. He is 4 and his name is Chase. They got a new kitten last year and she didnt want Chase anymore cause he was hissing at the younger cat. She wanted to take him to a shelter. Unfortunately all shelters here put down animals. My husband was so upset and was afraid he would be put down cause people here only want kittens.
Well we have two little kids, two cats and two dogs. We made sure to set up a second litter box. He is fine with the cats and kids but the dogs he is terrified of and growls at. He refused to come out when the dogs are inside. We have a crappy fence and our dogs try to get out a lot so we only let them out to pee. We do not want to get rid of him cause the shelter will put him down and he is a sweet cat but he has peed behind our couch a few times cause he wont come out. I want to keep him but I dont want a couch that smells like cat pee. We are getting a "new"couch and I dont want that one smelling like pee too. Any tips. The litter box is in the bathroom close to the couch. He will go if the dogs are outside. I just want him to come out and get used to everything more.

Alright, I need some insight from dog owners!! We’re dog sitting for someone and my kiddo was growled at. Long story short, dog had a rawhide and was in his crate. My son walked up to her and got close to the door...that’s when she growled. So, my question is: those of you that have little kids and dogs...is this normal for dogs? Or should this not be tolerated? I’ve never owned a dog, so this is all new to me.

We went out of town for a few days on vacation, and I hired a pet sitter that was recommended by my neighborhood website. I checked references and met her in person, and she seemed nice enough. We paid her to come to our house 4 times a day to let our dog out on potty breaks and to care for him and our two cats.

We have a home security system plus a front door camera, so we get alerts whenever someone comes in our home. The first two days we were gone, she only came 3 out of the 4 times. Obviously, I wasn't happy, but I let it go. Then the last two days, she only came 2 out of the 4 times! I wanted to say something to her, but my husband advised against it saying she had a key to our house, and we still needed her to care for the pets, so he didn't want to make her mad. I even texted her and asked her how the pets were doing, and she made up stories about how they were doing at times when she wasn't in our house. When we got back home, there was poop in a couple rooms (probably because the dog wasn't let out often enough) that she hadn't bothered to clean up. I'm never using her again, but I'm wondering if I should say anything to her or ask for money back? Husband says to let it go, because it wouldn't make a difference at this point.

I have a 13 year old cat, Calico, who has been with me since she was a kitten. DH begrudgingly accepted her and her sister kitty when we got married. He’s grown to like the other one and used to like Calico. In the last eight months, Calico has been diagnosed with severe arthritis, IBS, pancreatitis and diabetes. When she’s not feeling well, she poops and barfs all over the house. Of course, I’m on a work trip, and he’s probably clean up 12 piles of poop and a bunch of barf. He texts me to complain. I call vet (what else can I do from 100 miles away?) and vet wants to see her. 300 bucks and expensive food recommendations later, he brings her home. He’s just done. I know he wants me to put her down. I already told the vet that we’re not doing insulin shots (it’s expensive, she’ll hate it, and I don’t know how long it would really prolong her life) but I’m not ready to put her down. What have you all done with sick elderly pets? I’m sad for her, but it’s also affecting my marriage :bummed:

My husband, two kids and I are supposed to leave tomorrow to stay in a mountain cabin with my in-laws for a week. I'm a planner, so I had already planned out what we would do each day and purchased tickets to things like the local theme park and a dinner show. I was looking forward to getting away for a week and spending time with family.

Last night, I noticed blood in the urine of my cat, so I took him to the emergency vet thinking it could be something serious. They said he has a UTI, and he's in a lot of pain, so they gave me pain meds to administer to him every 12 hours as well as a liquid antibiotic to give him every 12 hours for two weeks. He's a large cat, and he can be feisty, so squirting a syringe of liquid medication down his throat is no easy task. Plus, I'm supposed to watch him to make sure his condition doesn't get worse. While we went on the trip, we planned for a pet sitter to come to the house to care for my cat and other pets, but I don't feel comfortable asking her to medicate my cat (who could bite or scratch her). I would also worry about him while I was away, especially since he would be alone most of the day.

We decided the best thing to do would be for me to stay home with my youngest son who is two, and my husband and oldest son can go to the cabin with my in-laws. That way the whole vacation isn't ruined, and my husband and older son can spend some quality time together. However, I'm still feeling sad and disappointed that I'll be missing out on the trip. It's such bad timing for my cat to get sick! I wish I could go on the trip, and I worry I'll be lonely, especially being by myself on 4th of July. I know my younger son will be with me, but it's not the same as having the whole family together. Has anyone else had to cancel a trip for a sick pet? Any advice for me to make it not suck so bad?

**trigger-- kind of gross**
I have a nearly seven year old Yorkie who has been given a 50/50 shot. This weekend, she was having diarrhea and was really restless at night. I woke up this morning to her throwing up, and there was throw up, diarrhea and blood everywhere. 😳 I took off from work today to take her to the vet and she has HGE. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemorrhagic_gastroenteritis
They did her blood work and it came back pretty dismal, but they said she was still plucky and might have a chance. So, she's going to be hospitalized for 24 hours to see if she improves...if not, she will need to be put to sleep. 😢 Just asking for kind thoughts and prayers for my little dog. ❤

We have an xl crate in our bedroom but our pup doesn’t have access to it during the day except for when I go out. He’s resisting going in and I thought if we moved it downstairs so he could access it at all times, maybe that would help. Thoughts?

We are getting a puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, we may be a bit crazy! We have a 2.5yr old and 8 month old, but are ready and know what a puppy includes!

Please don't tell me we are nuts lol I know this already!

We will be crate training and such, but would like to hear other methods or tricks that worked for you when training a puppy!

The litter was born on July 1st and will be ready in 7-8 weeks.

We know the family.... they have 3 small children so these dogs/pups are around kids from the start, so I am happy about that!

We have had a puppy before same breed American bulldog/pit bull mix, so we are so excited!

Any tips/training styles to look into before we bring her home?

Okay I’m not a dog person at all so maybe I’m more offended by this but someone walking his dog just let the dog take a huge dump on my lawn. He did clean it up and I went out to see if there was anything remaining and I didn’t see anything but I’m still totally grossed out and annoyed. I can’t imagine ever doing that if I had a dog. It’s still my yard! Then right after, he walked around the corner to his own huge lawn and went inside. Why can’t his dog crap in his own yard?

Does anyone have either of these types of dogs? We previously had a Great Pyrenees and we loved her so much (she died 3 years ago) but the hair and the drool, oh my goodness!!! We love big dogs but I've read a lot about Westies and am very interested. I'm just wondering if anyone has one and can give me some insights. I've heard wonderful things about golden retrievers as well, so personal info about them would be welcome, as well. We're looking for a dog that is good with school age kids and a cat, doesn't spend all it's time barking and has medium to low exercise needs.

My first dog ever Dutch is getting older. We adopted him nearly 11 years ago and he was full grown at the time- so he's at least 13. He's a lab/Aussie/Chow mix about 65 lbs. His health has been going downhill. He seems confused and startled easier than usual. He has been getting scared and hiding in corners and refusing to go outside at least daily. Lately he has been losing his ability to hold it overnight and his tummy seems upset. He has been going poo inside more and more often. This morning I woke up to liquid poo explosion all over our dining room. He was just in for his check up Tuesday at the vet and said he is aging but fine. He's my husbands dog so it's not really up to me but I don't want to see him suffer. Is this the end or could it get better?

When did you know it was time to say goodbye.

Our 7 year old beagle mix had a lump on his back leg (outside elbow) yesterday that he licked and licked. This morning when I showed my husband, that was the only one. When I went to check on it just now I noticed a new one on the opposite leg but same area.

Any guesses?

ETA: picture one is the one I noticed yesterday. Picture two is the new one from tonight.

Ftm due in two weeks and I'm slowly bringing the things needed for baby out of the closed off nursery and into our bedroom. We plan to use the pnp as a bassonet but our one cat keeps jumping in it! Every time I see her do it I take her out, I've moved it across the room so she can't jump in from the bed (but she still jumps in from the floor). Now I have to rewash the sheets because they're covered in cat hair. My biggest concern is what to do when the baby comes! My husband is really worried about her trying to snuggle with the baby and end up strangling him/her. I think that's a little extreme, but she is a little cuddler. We've tried to keep our door shut but our other cat sits outside the door scratching and meowing until we let hin in. Any suggestions??

For those of you that have dogs (specifically big dogs) how often do you walk them?

I feel awful, we haven't taken our 2 dogs out on a walk for probably 2 weeks.....we used to take them at least 3-4 times a week, or to the dog park. But getting further in my pregnancy, it's just not doable, I just ache all the time and walking sucks. DH has been so busy at work that he's just exhausted by the time he gets home.

Luckily we do have a fenced in back yard, and I will sit out there and throw the tennis ball for them for 30-45 minutes each night....but I feel like they still need to get out of the house/yard......ugh....mom guilt even hits with pets!

Nothing more to say really. DH and I are both a mess. Not coming home until Monday. Not sure how we are going to be able to enjoy the rest of the trip. He was old so we knew this was a possibility, but I didn't think it would happen. I can't help but feel like it's our fault for leaving him with my parents since they didn't know his routine as well as we did or exactly how to care for him. And I feel terrible that my parents are the ones who ultimately had to deal with this. :crying: :crying:

We've been dog sitting my parents' dog for the last month because they've been unable to take care of him. And he's driving me crazy. He poops in our house, he constantly gets on furniture that our dog knows is off limits, he's dumb as a rock, and he's super difficult to walk. Oh and he bit me when I tried to get him out of his crate in the morning a couple weeks ago. So now we need to be much more vigilant about the kids. Meanwhile, my dog offers up her face to get poked and is always mild mannered.

It's possible this will need to be a long term solution and I'm dreading it. DH took both dogs out this morning and he refused to poop. I'm sitting here catching up on HB before I have to leave and he's pooped in the living room and the kitchen. At least the kitchen's easy to clean with a Clorox wipe. But on the carpet? And I have a crawling baby. UGH.

My parents are going to try to take him back later this month. My mom isn't physically capable of waking him and my dad was recently diagnosed with cancer. He starts chemo next week and I'm worried that he's going to be over extending himself to take the dog out. He's their baby though and they really want him back.

But with the realities of cancer they might not be able to take care of him long term.

This is mostly just a vent. I feel bad for the dog. Like he's a step child I don't really love. He deserves affection and he's a lap dog, but I don't really want to cuddle with him because he's always on my nerves.

Our 10 and 8 year old dogs have gotten in 3 fights this week. I couldn't get them to stop one, and my husband had to step in. Our older dog has been showing territory guarding the last few days, but there's nothing physically wrong with her that could explain why she's being so moody.

Any tips? So far I've just kept them separated while in the house, but our younger dog has such separation anxiety and can't handle being separated even by just a baby gate.

Maybe it'll just go away??

ETA: older dog has not been aggressive with us, LO, or the cat.

We are getting a puppy  but are a little stumped on the name. The puppy is a male, cream colored labrador that will likely grow to about 65-70 lbs. So far, we have Finn on the list because it means light-haired but DH wants more options.

Any suggestions? It's going to be one of these guys.

I was talking about this with a friend, and she prefers big dogs because she grew up with them. I grew up with smaller dogs, and vastly prefer them!

My kids are growing up with big dogs though, and I think they will be big dog adults. Makes me a little sad that they won't share my love and appreciation for little dogs!
