Maybe this is a safe space? Wondering how you and your family are faring through watching what's happening in Palestine. Any resources you have found to be useful? Any community you've found? Anyone pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised you? I participated in a virtual somatic therapy session called "Parenting Through Genocide", hence the name of this thread. It was very helpful, but I haven't found other sessions like it. I have found some grief spaces online as well, not they haven't been about parenting per se. Happy to talk if anyone is interested.

@MamaintheValley: @JennyPenny: It felt like finally being free of an abuser. Feeling literally safer. I know Republicans who are sad by the outcome, but while they are sad that certain policies won't reflect their political views, I don't have to worry quite so much about the safety and rights of my family and friends. Big distinction for me.

@JennyPenny: totally agreed. Great speeches from him all week! So encouraging and auch a relief.

I may or may not have told my son that there's a new superhero that will help us fight the virus, and his name is Biden ❤ I got a free little cutout stand of Biden. From my union, so my son has it in his room for now.

Quite excited about another glass ceiling being broken, too.

Now to get those Dem senators from Georgia elected, and Warren for Treasury Secretary ❤❤

@poppygirl15: yes! And I’m super excited about Harris and just having a female VP. My 5 year old son called her “the first girl president” and while he’s a bit off obviously, it’s pretty exciting to be moving in that direction. And that despite many flaws in the country and world still to work on, he and his sisters will grow up seeing improving representation and diversity of many types.

@JennyPenny: Agreed. Not really surprised this time around, after the last four years. And to be fair, depending on how PA and GA go, it may not end up *that* close. The electoral college situation makes it seem worse (as usual). Biden would also be overcoming the typically significant incumbent advantage.

@Mrs. Carrot: I feel the same way and having a bit of an existential crisis. That said, we moved to TX from NYC recently and what I’m gathering from my surroundings is that a lot of people care more about the economy than anything else (racism included) and if they listen to Fox News/ local media then they are just hearing a completely different reality.

@Mrs. Carrot: There are, unfortunately, a lot of people who have drunk the Kool-Aid and are going to reject anything that challenges the Fox News narrative and lies that spew from the president. For example I had a fervent discussion with DH’s aunt who is a cancer survivor last Christmas about pre-existing conditions and the fact that the Trump administration is actively trying to overturn the ACA. She believes he’s going to enact something on pre-existing conditions because “nobody wants that to go away” and he says he has a plan. But also believes Obamacare has to go because “it’s a disaster” and her premiums still go up every year.

If there’s one silver lining I feel like Clinton’s loss was less gender based than I did four years ago. Which makes me hopeful that the US might someday elect a woman.

I am also really surprised by how well incumbents did overall in this garbage fire of a year. Especially Susan Collins.

@MrsJBeeG: Absolutely agree with this. I think you're referencing this data: https://apnews.com/article/votecast-race-class-divide-elections-27cfbd82c14d6649097bd706f4158e4e
Most Republicans I know that voted for him think he is despicable and divisive, but they still want to vote for the platform he represents.

I personally think we've seen just as much swamp creating as draining this last presidency and was fortunate that my views have changed enough in the last 4 years to let me support most of a platform and the same candidate this year.

Let's just all hope that in the next year that we can return to platform discussions rather than candidate level mudslinging.

@catgirl: I felt the same way for awhile this morning. I’ll say I’m not liberal at all but I don’t like Trump and what he is doing to our institutions. But I read an article about exit polls - contrary to how it feels, people aren’t driven to vote for Trump - they are voting Republican based upon the platforms. Edited to correct that the number was 25% voted based on personality - 75% on issues. So this isn’t a referendum on Trump - that could be misleading. (Well not for 75% of the republican voters - the other 25% who like Trumps personality scare me).

What we need to do is learn (again) to talk politics civilly with people we disagree with. That doesn’t mean bashing those who voted for one candidate or another. I am hoping for a Biden presidency not because I will agree with his policies (I probably won’t on many) because it should mean a return to civility between Americans.
