My cycle after each pregnancy didn't show up until I weaned my kids 100%, so for my first it was at around 11 months pp, and my second was at about 13 months pp --- and both times it wasn't SUPER crazy heavy, but just a normal heavy period.

@Clementine12: all three times returning for me were no big deal, some of the lightest cycles I have ever had and then just regular the next one after that with 1-3 heavy days and light to start and end, which is normal for me.

I think it can definitely be different every time. It was terrible for me after #2 (and even when it returned after a D&c miscarriage) but really do not remember it being bad with #3. So I’d be prepared for it to be heavy next month (mine usually are variable for a few months before settling back to normal) but hopefully it’ll be easier this time!

I remember AF being nightmarish after DD1s birth. Just came back after DD2 (same timeline, 6 mos later) and it's been...pretty easy? 1 heavy day, 2 light days and some spotting.

What was your experience with your cycle returning? Am I in for it next month?

This is me right now, 3 weeks postpartum. I have no appetite and basically force myself to eat throughout the day. Cheese sticks, almond crackers, yogurt with granola, bananas and fruit have been my go-tos. It's so annoying. I'm right there with you.

This happened to me immediately after both my babies. But within a few weeks my appetite becomes insatiable due to breastfeeding 😂 Anyway, I totally agree with smoothies! You can pack a lot of calories and protein in there. I’m currently drinking one, haha. Banana, plain Greek yogurt, skim milk, tbsp cocoa powder, tbsp peanut butter, collagen protein powder. So good, like a chocolate shake! I also sometimes add spinach.

Yes! I just had my second c-section 7 weeks ago and this was me! I didn't feel like eating at all and had ZERO appetite. 7 weeks later and I still don't feel like my stomach is back to normal and I skip meals completely. I agree on the smoothies as it was the only thing I could really eat/drink that sounded appealing. Soups are also a good idea as well. I did breakfast for a few dinners as it was one of the only other things that sounded good (scrambled egg and toast.) Congrats on your new baby!

i was actually coming here to suggest a smoothie as well! you can put in good fruits and yogurt and even granola and it becomes a full meal! i'm not sure i fully had this but have definitely had to work after both births to make sure i'm eating enough healthy food because i'm otherwise just so stressed and unhappy and am not motivated to eat anything besides, like, occasional brownies. last time i tried to make a big batch of fruit smoothie and then would drink some every time i knew i needed to eat but didn't have the energy to put together anything else.

congrats on the arrival of your little one!

@LadyDi: not immediately pp for me, but I lose my appetite with stress, depression, and after weaning--just weaned my second baby last week, my job is shit these days and I think I'm having weaning blues, so food is tough right now. I'm getting through the day by eating pieces of cheese and dark chocolate with fruit--I think the fat and cholesterol *really* helps sustain, and it doesn't feel greasy and gross to eat. also doing triscuits and smoothies. my other go-to when I just don't want anything is soups made with heavy whipping cream, like chowders or creamy tomato--again, it's the fat that really helps, and you don't have to have very much to fill up for a while. A handful of cashews or a few spoonfuls of cottage cheese help with protein. It's a weird problem, but it'll pass. And congratulations on the baby :)

I just had my 3rd boy via c section 5 days ago and I have zero appetite. This happened after my first two (also c sections) but it seems particularly bad this time. It’s hard for me to make myself eat anything so I’ve been sticking to soup, fruits and trying to snack on small things through the day since I can’t handle a full meal. I’m on pain meds from the surgery though and taking them on an empty stomach makes me feel terrible. I know it’ll pass eventually, but has anyone else experienced this? I’m so frustrated.

@paigeface: OK, I'm glad work isn't like some stressful 9-6 bullshit and that you can bring your babe :-) and yes, definitely good to get out of the house and have some purpose!
Now, please please do not feel embarrassed talking to your doctor! From all the moms I talk to (and I talk to A LOT Of mom b/c I'm super open and annoyingly honest), it seems like EVERYONE has a touch of PPD. Some worse than others. For some, it is delayed (like mine was, kicked in about 6 weeks). It's so, so, normal and honestly, biologically speaking, it's part of the process...
I once read the hormonal disruption (bc it is a MASSIVE) disruption) is equivalent to what teens go through- and there's so much public awareness of teens and how hard it is for them to adjust to their new body and minds, etc etc And moms go through that and society is just like oh NBD, you have a baby! It's astonishing how different you are on a biological and even chemical level- this one researcher looks at MRIs and has found the post-partum brain undergoes some incredible changes, mainly ones that make us more anxious/ worried/paranoid, with the very important purpose of being more vigilant caretakers of our babies. It's nuts!!
Can you tell I am fascinated by postpartum issues? It's a big fucking deal and people underestimate it.
I am here if you ever want to talk. I have been there twice and can tell you it's so normal and it absolutely gets better!

@pachamama: Thank you so much for your post! I need a hug right now! I think you put it perfectly about feeling hijacked because that's how I am feeling. I don't feel like myself at all and its the worst feeling. I scheduled an appointment with my OBGYN for Wednesday so I am hoping it will help. He is a really kind and easy going Dr. Super easy to talk to so even though I am a bit embarrassed talking about it I think it will be helpful. I wish I could go part-time but unfortunately not in the best financial situation to do so. The only saving grace is that it's my families run small business so it's more of a relaxed environment for me. I have my own office where I bring DD so that helps a bit. Sitting at home was making the depression worse anyway! I definitely need to take better care of myself though and make sure I am eating and drinking properly because sometimes I will totally forget especially between a newborn and a toddler.

@paigeface: omg girl. I want to hug you. I have BEEN THERE. and I remember both times 3 weeks being BAD- adrenaline is finally not keeping you alive, sleeping is a shitshow, and the hormones are raging. I don't have great advice for you because unfortunately these feelings can linger around for a while. But I absolutely know it gets better! I might be a few weeks it might be a few months. But you need to take care of yourself! What you're feeling is absolutely normal I only said how I felt with PPD was like being hijacked-- I was not myself at all. Resentful of everything couldn't enjoy anything, he did being home all day. It was terrible.

I didn't find my OB to helpful at all but maybe they can point you to a good psychiatrist. I love my therapist and she has helped me immensely.

I can't believe you're back to work. Is there any way at all you can go part time???? That's inhumane to expect you to work. Please take some time to let yourself heal.

I don’t think anyone can diagnose PPD vs baby blues over the internet, but speaking as a woman who has had significant depression/anxiety in the past, you should schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist ASAP. They often have long wait times and it’d be better to just get it on the calendar if you do need it. In the meantime speak to your OB and a therapist. If you do decide to go the med route, an OB will typically only know about and prescribe a couple of anti-depressants. A psychiatrist knows the plethora of anti depressants and can probably better tailor a plan for you. My “saving grace” anti depressant is rarely prescribed anymore but was the perfect fit for me and my symptoms (loss of appetite and lack of sleep). I was also on a couple of SSRI’s until I found one that didn’t cause side effects.

Don't let fear stop you from trying meds (if the Dr thinks that’s a good option). It may take some time but I’m finding the right combo was life changing for myself as well as friends who’ve dealt with mental illness. After only a few weeks I actually felt like MYSELF which I hadn’t felt in years. It was amazing. I’ve been off the SSRI for over a year and feel great too. You don’t need to stay on it forever but it might be the thing you need to get through a dark period. And above all else - YOU ARE NOT ALONE ❤️❤️❤️❤️
