I know it’s quiet here now but I could use hive help! My 5 year old son has been potty trained for a couple of years. He still wears a pull up at night because we’ve tried ditching them a few times and he really just doesn’t wake up at night to pee. No big deal, we’ll wait for that part. But more and more he’s having accidents, mostly pee but sometimes poop too. He 100% knows he needs to go - is dancing around like crazy if it’s pee or sitting funny if it’s poop, and when we see that we tell him to go try but he usually refuses until the last minute and then has an accident. He starts kindergarten in the fall so we really need to get this under control! I’m not sure if we should go back to just forcing bathroom time every X amount of minutes or if there’s another way to help him, the issue is definitely he doesn’t want to stop what he’s doing to go to the bathroom. Thanks!

So our 3rd is 3.5 and she still just really wants to go in diapers all the time (I say “go in” because she can happily wear panties and ask for diapers as needed). She will go on the small potty some, but rarely poop. She has zero accidents in panties - she just doesn’t like to use the potty. I’ve never convinced her to go in the regular toilet or at ANY public place, even though our local mall has private family bathrooms with nice small toilets that helped our others get started away from home. She has a short enough preschool day to hold it there.

I’m just kind of at a loss. I’ve considered just pulling all diapers but she also is treated for difficult constipation (already takes a lot of miralax and doesn’t have dairy due to allergy) and has repeat UTIs related to that so I’m very hesitant to do anything that will contribute to more holding of anything. So every time it’s a negotiation and I cave more than I’d like to admit.

But man I’m ready to be done with diapers. She has more willpower than us for sure though :silly:

Any genius approaches??

Hello. My son will be 3 in April. Since May he has been potty trained for day time. Around Christmas we ditched the diaper cold turkey at night. We woke him in the night to pee for a week and then he was sleeping through the night without any accidents. He even called for me one morning to take him pee. It felt successful.

The last week or two he has completely regressed. He pees the bed every single night. Last night we woke him twice to pee and he still peed the bed in the morning. It's like he isnt even trying anymore. He also doesnt call for us when he pees so by the time we get to him we have no idea how long hes been laying with wet clothes.

What do we do? Do we try a different method? Put a diaper/pullups on him? Just ride it out and keep telling him pee goes in the potty?

I don’t know why but I can’t teach my third to successfully pull up her undies/shorts/pants after potty. I think part of it is being the baby and we do too much for her in general!!

Are there any magical tips or tricks? She tends to get them rolled or bunched and then just starts crying. I can’t even remember this issue with my other two!

DD2 will be 3 in August and starts preschool 8/26. I am starting to panic about being ready to handle herself with no diapers. My others I let them lead and both trained a bit after 3 and forcing it feels weird but is a necessity.

She is SUPER strong willed and every time we’ve tried it’s been a battle - and I back down because she’s a holder (waits until her bladder literally overflows if we force it and take away diapers) so it gets out of hand quickly.

We have her constipation issues in hand (but that may contribute to it being difficult - she’s had GI issues for a year) and I know she can nearly go on command as my current approach has been to work on having her go in her diaper when asked on a regular schedule. She can actually wear panties for hours no problem if her bladder isn’t overly full. So the big problem is getting her to relax and go sitting down.

We’ve tried a variety of incentives (food treats, shopkins which she loves, big sibling encouragement) and nothing holds much sway. She’s been on the potty for hours multiple times, lots of water, gone pantsless for days. you name it, but she can hold almost forever if she wants to. Even water play doesn’t seem to work.

I just don’t know how we 1) get her going sitting down on any sort of potty and then 2) get her comfortable going away from home, handling her pants up and down, etc. She’s supposed to go AM only two days and one longer day and I have seriously contemplated the worst case of just hoping she can hold it while she’s there!

Any one else fight this battle of wills on a timeline? What did you do??

We attempted to potty train DS this week and it was a total mess. We used the method where you have them naked from the waist down for the first few days. He successfully pooped in the potty twice but for pee after 3 full days he could understand that he needed to pee and do a crazy dance to hold it in, but would refuse and scream about sitting on the potty and eventually just pee everywhere. This morning we finally gave up because he was a hysterical mess because he knew he had to pee but didn’t want to do it on the potty.

My other kids trained almost fully at daycare so we really didn’t do much besides throw some underwear on them. Now we are at a different daycare and they want him fully trained before they’ll let him wear underwear there. I feel super defeated and am not sure what to do as we don’t have many super long weekends like this one to work on it. Do we just wait and try again in like a month? 6 months? What would you do?

I don't post much lately, but I could use some thoughts on an issue. My DD is 4 (5 in August) and should be starting kindergarten this fall, the cut off is 5 by 9/1.

The problem is she's still not fully potty trained, especially for poop. We moved last spring and started her in a new daycare over the fall. She was doing okay-ish with potty training when she was home with us during the spring and part of the summer (thanks pandemic) but in retrospect she was constipated, causing her to poop tiny amounts several times a day.

She did okay at first starting in the new preschool, but then she got moved up to the pre-k room and her constipation got really bad. She refused to poop for days and starting having a ton of pee accidents (a consequence of too much poop pushing on her bladder).

We have had her see a doctor about the constipation since last fall and she's doing much better, but she still goes through phases of poop holding. And she's really inconsistent with using the potty for poop. She's really sensitive and I don't think the teachers in her current classroom are a good fit. I think they've gotten upset with her for her poop accidents and the kids have made fun of her, and now she's scared to poop at school and pretty much refuses, which either leads to accidents or more constipation. She's maybe 50/50 at home for using the potty vs. having an accident.

So we've come to the point where I'm starting to get nervous about kindergarten. Part of me says another 6 months may be enough time, the other part of me says we've been doing this for years and still not done. We are tempted to get a nanny who's willing to work on potty training her, but of course that's way more expensive and difficult when we both work at home. We could put her in another school for pre-k, but IDK that anyone would want to take her, given the issues. And even though it's not a great fit for her, I don't have a lot of confidence that changing it up will make her any less scared of the new environment (which is what exacerbated the problems last fall). We could hold her back, but I hate to that. She's so smart I feel like it would be a disservice to her. And then if we hold her back, I don't know that I want to keep sending her to the same school, and I know she's going to be scared at first going to a new situation and we may have the same holding problems regardless.

So I'm kind of stuck. DH thinks we should hire a nanny and have her home for the rest of the school year and work on poop training and hope that it's enough to send her to daycamp with her brother in June. But I'm not sure I'm up for all that, and I think we have to decide about kindergarten sooner than June.

My 19mo has been obsessed with the potty for the past two months, often asking us to mime his stuffed animals going potty or even holding him over the potty to pretend and go through the motions. He started Montessori at the beginning of January and has been loving it. His second week there, he asked the teachers if he could use the potty like the other kids. They helped him take off his pants twice that week when he asked to go potty, and he did both times! He did it once the following week after nap time. This morning, he came over and told me he'd gone #2 in his diaper and asked to use the potty. I brought him over, took off the diaper, and held him on the potty (we haven't bought a little potty yet, thinking we had time). He finishing going #2 in the potty, I wiped, and he flushed and washed his hands!

I'm wondering if this is a window that we should be taking advantage of to potty train. He's clearly starting to understand the concept. My only hesitation was that I was going to give him more time between adjusting to school and potty training. We're also dealing with a tough stretch of sleep right now, with lots of crying at bedtime and early wake-ups at 5-5:30 every single morning that we can't seem to crack (I think he's overstimulated and overtired when he comes home from school because he's still adjusting).

Thoughts? Is it go time for potty training? Hold off a bit longer?

So my twins are 4.5. DD potty trained at 2yo and DS at 3yo.

Lately we have had issues with both kids but mainly DD having an accident inches from the toilet. Like standing in the bathroom close enough that she can touch the toilet but emptying her whole bladder b4 pulling down her pants.

Is a this a normal part of growing up? It seems super odd to me and the kids give me nothing when I try to figure it our.

In the last month we have been seeing these type of accidents 3 or so times per week.

The only "life change" was returning to daycare in Sept.

We've been diaper-free in our home for almost a month now and I've only had a full night of sleep like 1 night of that whole time!

I'd love some tips or positive stories if anyone has them

Here's the thing...my kids are on the older side of this--lo1 is 6.5, and lo2 is 3.5. I know, I know, I have a first grader who was still in diapers at night until a month ago...we really let it go on too long but she has been really resistant to trying, and with her personality especially, it makes things harder to push if she's not on board. Our younger daughter was sleeping through the night with dry diapers for a few nights, so we jumped on that as a window of opportunity to get her out of diapers, but that also meant lo1 had to start trying too, so...here we are a month later. the 3yo has had more dry nights than 6yo, but still usually wakes every couple days motn having leaked. The 6yo usually wakes up wet anywhere between 4-5:30am--so she's making it *almost* through the night. and that's even with dh waking her to pee around 11 before he goes to bed (we started that about 2-3 weeks in and she is on board with it).

We're doing so much laundry, everything smells like pee. Help! Is there anything else we can do? They pee right before bed time, we wake the older one to "dream pee," we're using pads on their beds but they don't really catch it all....Has anyone used those "bedwetting alarms?" do they do anything?

DS has underwear and will pee on the potty. He use to poop only in the pull-up. Preschool they will not allow the pull up. I’ve been working on pooping on the potty and he won’t. He will sit and read books. We’ve watched Daniel the Tiger, read books etc and he hops off when he knows it is coming but has been holding it. Any suggestions? TIA

My son is 4.5, and he's been more or less potty trained for about a year and a half. Except for two things:
1) He still has pretty frequent accidents. Usually it's just a little bit of pee, and then he realizes he has to go and runs to the bathroom, but he's got a wet spot on his underwear, sometimes on his shorts. We've tried to deal with this with rewards (candy/quarter/sticker on the chart every time you have dry underpants) and it's been reasonably successful, but we also remind him to go a lot. He starts kindergarten next week and I don't think they're going to be as diligent about making sure he pees as we are!
2) He's leaking through his pull-ups at night. He's a heavy sleeper and really nowhere near night trained - he's never woken up at night to tell us he had to pee. But lately he has been waking up at night because his shorts (and bed) are wet! It was happening on a very regular basis earlier in the summer, so we went up a size in pull-ups and started making sure he peed at bedtime and then taking him to the bathroom again when we went to bed. It worked great, he was waking up with a dry pull-up. Then it stopped working but there were still no leaks, then we got lazy about it, now we've had two days of leaks again (and last night I did limit what he drank at bedtime and tried him on the toilet when I went to bed).

We're using Huggies Pull-ups 4T-5T - I'm open to changing although I'd prefer not to, because we already have an unopened box of 3T-4T, an unopened box of 4T-5T, plus 99% of a package of GoodNites that we tried once before realising they were enormous on him (he's really small for his age, weighs about 34lbs).

Does anybody have any advice/commiseration on either issue?

So DD does awesome if she's naked - she's perfectly capable of going to the bathroom to pee/poop/whatever, but as soon as we put underwear or pants on her, she pee's in them. I swear they only last 10 minutes before she pee's in them and is back running around naked.

How do I get past the 'naked' stage!? This has been a weeks-long process already.

My son just turned 3 and we made the decision to potty train because he showed so much interest! We’re on day 10 and we’re having so much trouble. W doesn’t identify if he needs to go, but shows regret when he does. W just won’t release in the potty but he can stop midstream. He won’t poop on the potty so that’s an issue we’re also trouble shooting. W is able to stay dry through nap and bedtime, is it possible he’s not ready? Do we go back to diapers? I’m so lost. This is where I feel like I failed as a parent!

We've had some ups and downs with potty training and I could use some advice.

We had a few false starts with potty training over the last year, but in the past month, my now-three-year old has taken to it. She will take herself to potty to pee, stays dry during play/naps/overnight/etc, she poops on the potty - in most senses, this is going really well.

However, when she says she needs to pee and makes her way to the bathroom, she has always already gone a bit in her underwear. It's like the fact that she started peeing in her underwear is her cue that she "needs" to go. It's not a full-fledged accident - she just wets her underwear a bit, and then she holds it while she rushes like crazy to the bathroom...but it's enough that her underwear is definitely wet and we're changing them pretty much every time.

It's been going on for the last month or so...is this the sort of thing that kids work out eventually? Is there something different we should try? We have some "scheduled" potty times through the morning - like before breakfast, before snack, before rest, etc. and that seems to help some.

She's incredibly well hydrated, which I'm sure doesn't help her situation...so I think she legitimately has to pee often, and it probably is a pain to take a break all the time to take herself. Any suggestions that might help, or is this just the sort of thing that kids figure out with time? My older daughter didn't potty train until she was close to 4, and once it clicked it totally clicked - so I didn't go through any of this in between kind of stuff.

Hello!

Trying to use this time to potty train my LO1z. He will be 3 in a couple of months. Shows readiness and has went dry for periods of times. He uses the potty at school too.

I put him in undies on Thursday and he was motivated and excited. I expect accidents. I don’t know if he’s going pee in the undies or if it’s from after peeing in the potty and his penis is just wet? We go every 15 mins and he’s peeing but also has undies wet too????

Also how did you do poop? He usually goes in the morning and afternoon. He’s been sitting on the potty and does alittle poop in the potty but doesn’t finish and wants his undies back. We’ve had poop in the undies twice. Should we put him in the pull-up so he can just poop and then switch? I don’t know- any helpful tips is appreciated.
TIA

DS is 4.5 and has had a recent uptick of bedwetting, currently wetting most nights. Pull ups nighttime aren't cutting it and I'm tired of the waste of pull ups + still having nightly laundry. The options I'm aware of are Goodnites (are they much better than pullups night) or Peejamas. If Goodnites fixed the daily laundry I'd probably be ok with that.

The Peejamas site has reviews saying it worked for their kid that pees a lot but in their FAQ they say if your kid is a heavy wetter this might not be for you. Peejamas are an investment $59/two so I'm scared to make the plunge.

Thoughts?

My DD is 3 (today!) and we are heavy into potty training.

She has a Hatch, which is a light/sound machine, which changes color when its "wake up time". This has been working great for the past year, she understands it, even if she hates it. (sometimes yelling at it to "TURN GREEN!!")

However, the past few weeks, she's been waking up two hours early, screaming & crying. I don't go in until the light is green, so this can be a long frustrating morning. The past few mornings, she has also been telling me that she needs to go potty; and this morning she did poop in her diaper and was then very upset about it.

So I have two 'trainings' competing against each other... sleep training vs potty training. How do I handle this?

I’m so frustrated with my three year old right now, idk what to do. Potty training has been a long, difficult road with her. She’s never been super consistent, but we’d have days without accidents or maybe one/day. But the last week has been a disaster. Going through as many as 8 outfits a day at daycare.

I read that constipation can cause pee accidents because of pressure on the bladder. But I gave her some stuff and she pooped this morning and then two pee accidents in under an hour.

I’m at a loss as to what to do. She’s finally at the point where she’s stopped resisting going, but it’s like she’s lost all ability to hold it. Daycare is frustrated with us. I’m frustrated with her.

I don’t want to take a step but I just don’t know what to do.

So my daughter is 20 months old and has started telling us when she poops and pees and always wants to come in the bathroom with me. She’s not clingy at all and it’s clearly because she interested in the toilet. This makes me think we should start potty training but the OCPT method really freaks me out! It seems like all my friends did it but I just don’t think DD will tolerate being inside for 3 days and I don’t want to be either! Plus it seems gross. Is there any other, more gradual way to do it that works?

Also-is there any truth to “missing the window”? Like if we ignore it now and try when she’s a little over 2, is that fine? I am really dreading it for some reason!

Thanks all!

My first grader is a slow poke in general (he takes after his dad  ). He *can* do things quickly when he's really motivated, but even when there are consequences like missing playtime, sometimes he takes forever to do things anyways. It can be anything from getting dressed to getting out of the car to eating.

But the biggest problem we have is that he usually takes *forever* to poop. Not the actual bowel movement part. But the wanting to chat while he's on the toilet, singing to himself, staring into space, whatever. And if I try to hurry him, he just claims that he's not done. And then the wiping can be the same way. Tonight he sat on the toilet for 20 minutes while we kept asking him to hurry up and be done. It's a problem when it's getting late at bedtime or we're trying to get somewhere. It's also a problem because (gross, I know) the poop dries out and then he needs to use wet wipes to clean up effectively.
Anyone else had this issue? Ideas of what to do? He hates timers and they usually backfire because he gets so worked up about them. And he'll get mad about a natural consequence (like having to wipe with wipes or missing playtime or not enough time for all the stories at bedtime), but it's not always enough to get him to move more quickly. Help!

My DD is ready for next size undies. We were using cheapo minnie ones......but since I'm going to size up I thought we would upgrade a bit.....the waist band & leg holes seem so itchy and constantly unravel.

I know I like soft waistbands so I was leaning toward maybe oshkosh undies....

What are some favorite girl undies? [We are in the 4T size range]

My almost 3 year old is one month into potty training and she starts preschool next week. I am so worried about her being able to wipe herself properly. Can your little girls wipe front to back on their own? What do you have them do? I'm really worried about recurring UTIs. :bummed:

Just wanting to hear what worked or didn't work foe your LOs? How old, how long it took, what the journey looked like... Thanks!

We have not been super on top of potty training. I was gonna wait till my baby got here. i have her in 8 days. But my son just randomly stopped peeing in his pullup yesterday. He was dry all day yesterday and last night. He is peeing though in the potty. I thought maybe after a few more days of this to get him some big boy underwear however I'm neverous about the pooping. He still hasn't gotten that down no matter what. My son has a speak delay and is improving a lot but still has a hard time telling us when he needs to pee. I have to set timers to remind us both. Any tips or ideas to help with the poop thing. Also should I get underwear for him?

DS is fully potty trained night & day for pee. We started a month ago with no intention of doing night potty training yet, but he stayed dry overnight of his own accord.

But the poop. The poop. He just will not poop in the potty. I thought we were getting there, but for the past few days he's just squeezed out little turds, and always starts out pooping in his undies. If I'm lucky, I catch him and then he'll finish in the potty. But, I'm so tired. I've cleaned four pair of poopy undies today and he still hasn't done a proper poop.

I'm going to buy prune juice tonight because I am sure he's constipated and that it's from stress of pooping in the potty. I was trying so hard to avoid just this, and I've told him that he can poop in his pull ups, but he doesn't.

Any tips on how to get him to poop in the potty? I thought about a rewards chart, but I don't know because I would want to reward him for pooping completely in the potty (re: not starting in his undies), but then there wouldn't be any immediate successes.

Anyhow, this is long, but please send help or tell me it gets better. FWIW, he's three.
