Thank you ladies! Aspirin therapy wasn't even on my radar so I'm glad to hear your experiences. I think one reason I was hesitant was because the whole appointment was so bizarre. She said "so you're still taking daily aspirin, right?" and I was like "uhhhh this is the first im hearing of it?" and she was like "well there's lots of evidence for it preventing pre-eclampsia, especially since it's your first pregnancy" and I was like "uhhhh it's not my first pregnancy?" like lady, are you even reading the right patient chart? 😳

I’m taking it for the same reason that you’re recommended it. I started at 12 weeks and am 33 weeks now. I’m 42. While I don’t know if it’s helped - my little girl is growing perfectly from what we can tell and I have no signed off pre/eclampsia so I haven’t worried overly much about taking it everyday.

@MoonMoon: I did for my second pregnancy (I was 35) - I had low Papp-A numbers in my first trimester bloodwork, and the OB suggested that might help with potential risks like pre-eclampsia, etc. I stopped taking it at 36 weeks and had a very healthy pregnancy and an elective induction at 39 weeks 3 days. Here's my thread asking the same question years ago: https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/low-dose-aspiring-during-pregnancy.

@Chuckles: I did the same - RE advised taking in first tri for recurrent miscarriage. Not age related, they gave me the impression it’s safe and might help so why not. I don’t know about taking it later though.

I took it for the first maybe 8 weeks or so of my last pregnancy. It was recommended by my RE because I had recurrent miscarriages, but there wasn't a specific reason. I think we were just throwing everything at the pregnancy :) She did recommend that I stop taking it when I had a small SCH around 8 weeks to prevent more bleeding, and then I never took it again. Also, I was 39 when I gave birth, but I don't think age had anything to do with the aspirin.

@MoonMoon: I had hellp syndrome with my first and so with my second pregnancy, I started it at 12 weeks. I had a consult appt pre baby #2 with a MFM specialist just because I was nervous about possibility of reoccurrence before we tried to conceive. She said it was very low risk in general and no risk to premature closure of pda like other NSAIDS. I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy with no issues of BP or protein in urine, although I did have PROM at 36 weeks, unrelated! I had just started the baby aspirin again at 12 weeks, but you know what happened at 14 weeks, again totally unrelated to aspirin or preeclampsia.

My sister had an IVF donor embryo baby last year and they also had her do baby aspirin. Sounds like it’s one of those widely recommended preventative measurements these days!

Hello all,

At my check-up yesterday, my Ob said she'd like me to begin daily baby aspirin, as it had been shown to prevent pre-eclampsia, especially in older mothers (I'm 41). I came home and tried to read up on it and the evidence doesn't seem as solid as what she'd suggested. It seems it's also implicated in heat duct defects if used in the 3rd trimester. Other than my age, I don't have any other risk factors for pre-e.

Did any of you do daily baby aspirin during pregnancy? Do you have any feelings or experiences to share on the matter?

I'm going to weigh in here at the risk of scaring everyone to death, but I suppose I have a unique perspective.

We did NIPT on our first pregnancy (age 38) and it was normal. I think insurance covered all but $80 or so due to age. We did it thinking that we wouldn't terminate even if something came back abnormal, but it would be good to know if we were facing a baby with extreme special needs or something to make childcare/career plans in advance. That NIPT came back normal.

On Baby #2, I was 39, and opted to do the NIPT again, for the same reason - not thinking we would ever terminate, but wanting to know for planning purposes so that DH and I could make some decisions. As many of you know it came back + for T21, confirmed by CVS, and we ended up terminating. I can tell you that how you think you'd react and the things you think about are much different (your perspective changes) once you are faced with that reality. You run through scenarios and consider things you'd never thought about pre-results. So there's that...

And as a physician, I also think it's good information for your medical team to have to be able to prepare and make decisions (earlier ultrasounds, in utero treatments, etc).

I was AMA for both my pregnancies. My insurance covered the test and I was grateful for the peace of mind. I think I probably would have paid out of pocket for it if it wasn't covered. But that's me.... I will state that even though I was monitored by a specialist for both pregnancies they did NOT catch my DS's VSD which was classified as "severe" when it was discovered (after he was born). So even though I would pay for the test, nothing is 100% accurate....

I’m 35 and pregnant with #3. I’ve been feeling super nervous this pregnancy, I think because I have two healthy children so I feel like I’m sort of rolling the dice having a third baby. Also I know a few people recently whose babies have chromosomal abnormalities that we’re not picked up on even with the anatomy u/s. For this reason I paid for the NIPT out of pocket. It came back extremely low risk but I still know there are things that cannot be picked up with the NIPT so we will see...

@Autumnmama79: The easygoing part is just my personality. I was accused of being a second time mom with my first pregnancy as I was just too calm.

Other than down syndrome, I would almost guarantee TFMR. My sister had birth defects and a 9 month old could do more than she could. She occasionally made noises, but didn't roll over or sit up and was spoon fed baby food. My parents were able to keep my brother and my life mostly normal, but I wouldn't do that to my kids. If a baby's life wouldn't be very good, I'd let them go peacefully.

At that age I would really, really want it, TBH. I was not AMA with my son, but insurance covered it due to a previous loss from a diagnosed genetic abnormality, and it gave me a lot of peace of mind that odds were in our favor that the pregnancy would end up being viable...

I did it with my last pregnancy (i was 37). My insurance covered it but i still got a bill for like 400 dollars. (Supposedly the test costs like a grand or something) i just called them and it was 200.

So try calling the testing place directly. It was nice because i knew pretty early that every thing was fine and we knew the gender at 13 weeks for sure. No educated guessing like in an US.

I am 35, and am very newly pregnant (4 weeks!) with a due date after my 36th birthday. Not sure if I will do NIPT or not. If this sticks, I am more worried about fetal echo then anything else. I think I read somewhere that AMA is over 40 in some countries so that is somehow putting my mind at ease about chromosomal abnormalities.

Now that you have a definitive answer, will you consider paying out of pocket for testing? I only would do so if your fear for genetic abnormality and birth defect outweighs the cost of testing.

@Autumnmama79: I'm not AMA (I'll be turning 35 a few weeks after the baby comes) but my midwifery practice had me call the Natera rep for our region, and he told me that they'd set me up with a cash payment of $200 OOP if my insurance didn't cover it. It's some sort of deal they have. So if your insurance company isn't helpful, maybe you could find out if there's a Natera rep nearby? Natera does the Panorama.

@Autumnmama79: I was considered a "high risk AMA" mama when I had DS (* I was 35 when he was born) and will be the same IF I ever actually conceive (* I am also 39). I'm hoping this cycle of Follistim and TI/ICI does it for me!
With both my DD (* I had her at 28) and DS, I was told Amniocentesis was the best testing option for me (due to having seizure disorder and multiple autoimmune diseases). It was covered by insurance both times even though I was living in different states for each pregnancy; however, I live in the US. My cousin (36 years of age) lives in Quebec and her NIPT was covered. Certain tests were covered for her and others were not based on the criteria of AMA and the fact that she was extremely healthy. I wonder why they are not covering yours? 🤷‍♀️

@JennyPenny: That truly is whats at the heart of this. I don't know what I would do 100% either, depending on the results. I'm very certain our marriage is not strong enough to weather something such as a severe diagnosis.

@Mrs. Toad: Send some easygoing vibes over here! Do you feel that way because you wouldn't do anything either way?

@Petitduck: I wish it was covered. My ob is very experienced and I can't imagine why she wouldn't tell me if it was... Maybe I need to ask around.

I thought it was covered in most provinces if you were AMA. Weird. I’m not that age yet, but if I was I’d probably fork over the money for peace of mind. But I tend to worry...

@Autumnmama79: I think for me one of the deciding factors is that I actually don't know what I would do if the baby did have an abnormality. If I was certain that I would take action I'd probably be more willing to pay out of pocket to have a definitive answer.
