I already had 1 DO via IVF and my doctor said it’s standard for IVF patients to see a fetal cardiologist, I am pregnant for the 2nd time around, also through IVF and I will see the fetal cardiologist this time as well.

Ok, so this is random, but I went to a Moms cocktail event put on by the hospital where I delivered (and where I work). I happened to run into our RE who we hadn't seen since about Oct 2016 when we graduated to our regular OB. He'd never met my daughter before (his creation), so I was surprised when he didn't seem too interested in hearing how she's been doing or making any sort of small talk.

It got me wondering if maybe he doesn't like babies... if he did, perhaps he'd have gone into Pediatrics instead? I'd love to crawl inside the mind of a RE and know what motivates them.

My endo wanted me on it my whole pregnancy. My numbers were always in the borderline range, never actually diabetic. My MFM agreed and it helped so I never needed insulin, even though I didn't follow the best diet.

FWIW, since you mentioned milk supply, I had a very good milk supply with LO despite tapering off metformin at 13 weeks, and despite PCOS. I was never at a high dose, just 750 mg.

I think maybe the progesterone helped since it can develop breast tissue and I *think* mammary glands, and I had a ton of breast sensation and growth last pregnancy. I also had a blood transfusion and almost continuous (72 hours) of IV fluids after labor due to low platelets, and I credit that hydration with early breastfeeding success.

both OBs said just the 1st trimester but I think it's one of those "all help, no harm" kind of meds so I'd be really open to taking it longer. I keep filling my prescriptions in case.

As for blood sugar, I test about once a week and it's always good numbers, metformin or not. I have one of those finger pricker thingies.

I posted about this back in 2015 and I got a huge variety of responses, I will find the link later.

I took it before my second pregnancy for borderline pcos. The re didn't really think that was the cause of my loss/if issues, more just in case. I moved to a new ob (new state) right after finally getting that pregnancy, and she just said first tri. I stopped with no issues, but I've also never had blood sugar problems or gd.

@ShootingStar: That's part of why I'm asking. I've heard such mixed things!

I didn't have insulin resistance before I went on it, so I wonder if I need it in the 2nd and 3rd tri...but I also don't want good blood sugar to go crazy because of stopping.

But I'd love to stop taking any medication I can

I've also heard that stopping in late pregnancy can affect milk supply.

In my first pregnancy they wanted me off it around 12 weeks. I fought it because I did a ton of research that said it was beneficial to people with PCOS and who had elevated blood sugar. I finally agreed to stop around 20 weeks and my blood sugar went haywire.

In my 2nd pregnancy my endocrinologist had me stop taking it right away and we addressed my blood sugar issues with insulin instead.

If you were on metformin before pregnancy to treat PCOS and/or lower miscarriage risks, how long did your doctor keep you on it during pregnancy?

I've heard conflicting things and trying to figure out the reasoning before I see my OB next week.

This pregnancy is baby #2 for us and will be our last. Our first was naturally (after a year of trying), but this is an IVF baby. I am not sure what we will do. Since we are done, I would rather not have an oops baby, but yet don't want to go on birth control (the hormones are enough for me to say 'no'!). So, it might be a snip, snip for the hubby, but we haven't discussed it.

I'm still pregnant but I don't see myself using birth control ever again. This is LO#2 and while we did conceive naturally while waiting to start fertility treatment, it was a long road to this point. I would love a third if I could be so lucky but I was diagnosed with DOR and it took a lot of effort, doctor and acupuncturist appointments, OPKs, etc. just to bring about this pregnancy so I'm happy to NTNP and just roll the dice.

ETA: I remember having no interest for quite some time after childbirth last time so I'm not worried about getting pregnant like 2-3 months after childbirth. It took awhile for things to heal....

@agold and others I was of the exact same mindset after DD was born almost 2 years ago. We have MFI but DH"s last SA for our cycle that produced our daughter was a huge improvement so we decided to do an IUDVARDY. I also did not want an oopsie before I was really ready. I did the copper one and got super heavy periods about 8 months pp even though I was breastfeeding 4 times a day at the time. When DD was a year old I got the IUD removed but we couldn't wait too long after that before going back to our RE. I actually ended up totally ready for $2 at 6 months pp. Crazy i know but my dauggter was an amazi g sleeper so i was totally just blissed out on being a mom--still am honestly. We also had 7 frozen embryos so that was comforting. I'm still trying for#2 (beta is on friday!!) but if we try for #3 I don't think I would do the IUD again. I'm already AMA and those periods were no joke. One soaked through my skirt at work and onto my chair!!! Thank God I had some yoga pants in my office. Anyways I think pp bc is all about if you're willing to risk an oopsie. Happy to answer any more questions.

@agold: Hey, lady. I'm no doctor but I think it's a good sign of healing that you're *at least* thinking about sex! Hope you get an all-clear soon!

Obviously I'm still pregnant (for another day or week?!) with LO #1, but I have been thinking about my response to any PP birth control question...mostly because of the humor of it all. We did IVF for severe MFI and whatever age-related quality issues I had. So there's next to zero chance that we would find ourselves pregnant naturally (as in, no MFI "reset" after LO #1). But if it weren't for the MFI, I'd totally be hoping for it! I feel like I've heard of a naturally-conceived #2 more than I haven't for IVF ladies. Plus you have time/age on your side still! Anyway, we won't do IVF again (and have no snow babies left), but if an absolute miracle occurred, we would be so happy. Meanwhile we'll be NTNP into the sunset and I'll enjoy not having to be on the pill or whatever! :silly:

@agold: I had similar thoughts after having my LO. I decided against any type of birth control. I talked about it with my OB at my postpartum appointment and she agreed with me. My DH and I would be thrilled if I got pregnant without interventions, so we're ok with the idea of an "oops" pregnancy. My DD will be one in a couple days and I haven't gotten my period back yet. She just dropped her last middle of the night feeding so I think it will come back soon and I'll be fertile again. I've already called my clinic to get on the schedule for an FET with my remaining embryo in the spring. I don't really have the desire to try on my own this time around, plus my remaining embryo is DD's genetic sibling.

So my beautiful ivf baby is almost 6 weeks old. I have my six week post partum check up on Thursday. I plan to ask when I can have sex again. I had a level four tear so I'm not sure when I will physically feel okay to do so, but I'm thinking about it nonetheless. I'm curious what you girls did about preventing a pregnancy or not. Ideally, I'd get pregnant again when my girl is a year or year and a half. But obviously I don't have the luxury of planning it that way without ivf. I really want to try naturally for a bit before doing ivf again. (We arent even sure we will do ivf again :bummed: ) Did any of you ntnp early after having your Ivf babies? I'd take an Irish twin over another ivf round a year or so from now any day. Really, I feel silly for even thinking I can get pregnant. But am I crazy to not use any protection at all? The most I'd do anyways is pull out since I'm never going back on the pill. What did you girls do for number two and how soon?

@NorthStar: Hey, lady! I forgot that you're TG! Yay! We are, too. Not too much longer now. Hope all is going well!

@agold: Congrats on your beautiful miracle baby girl! Thinking of you and hope recovery is going well!
