So…. Been trying for another baby for more than 2 years. I already have 4 kids: 8, 7, 6 and 5. I miscarried in October. Just found out I’m pregnant the end of Jan!!! Well yesterday just found out it’s twins! Baby #5 and #6 😳

After two years of IF, I am now 7w6d pregnant... and I found out today that there are two heartbeats. Gulp.

I have been working with an RE, and I have consults lined up with two OBs in the next week. (Sadly, the OB who attended my 3yo's birth has retired.)

Any suggestions for things to ask the OBs given this new development? I was all set to grill them about things like wireless monitoring and birthing tubs, and now instead I need to ask about things like MFM facilities.

My RE suspects they are monochorionic diamniotic but I am scheduled for a high res scan tomorrow to confirm. She said that if they turn out to be mono mono then it is more likely to require a high risk specialist.

There aren't many recent posts on this board, but surely I'm not the only one! Can we start a board for talking about our twin/multiple pregnancies? Tips and advice from women whose twins/multiples have already been born welcome as well!

Just making up this little survey to get us started:

How far along are you?
EDD?
How many months/years were you trying?
Method of conception (natural, Clomid/Femara, IUI, IVF, FET):
What does your partner think? If you are single, what do your family/close friends think?
Thoughts/feelings/fears?

We had a second scan today at 5w6d and saw both sacs, yolk sac, and she even managed to get a heartbeat for both babies! Both are measuring right on track size wise! We are both thrilled and terrified! I know it's still early but we are more hopeful they will both stick

I'm 9w3d and still freaking out one of the twins is going to vanish. We've had 3 u/s where we've seen/heard the heartbeats and they've been within a day of each other in terms of growth. Our RE just released me to my OB after our 8w3d scan and I don't have another appointment until 10w5days. My worry is only increased by my symptoms coming and going. So multiple mommas I'm wondering when your doctor told you you could stop worrying about vanishing twin?

Hi all! Had an early US today with my RE at 4w5d and we saw two sacs (we knew it was a good possibility with our iui). However the doctor said it's too early to say it's twins for sure. Just wondering if any other multiple mommas had a similar experience and how it turned out for you?

Hi!
I'm trying to ground myself here but I'm just not getting a good vibe from my OB office. This is a twin pregnancy (not that that means super high-risk) so in my mind I feel like I should have more visits and u/s done. My next appt is at 12 weeks (last appt was 8 was and a few days) and I was told no further u/s's until 20 weeks! I originally had the appt with a NMW but changed it to a doc instead.
I also have a consult with maternal fetal medicine doc at 13 weeks....so I know I'll see more then.
Was I spoiled working with a RE for so long? Do I just need to CTFD? How often should twins be monitored in your experience?

What car seats do you have? Do you like them? I have spent hours researching and still feeling completely overwhelmed. All I know is I priority 1 is safety and priority 2 is lighter weight so I can physically carry both.

The only seat I've seen specifically reviewed for twins is:
Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Infant Car Seat. It looks great - but I'd like to comparison shop.

I am very lucky in that I was handed-down my friend's wardrobe. I have sorted through and started thinking of things I'd like to add to the mix. Right now demi panel fits best for me (at 16 weeks). Before I spend money I want to think of what makes the most sense in the long term.

Twin moms - did you wear more full panel or demi panel (because your tummy was too big??) as you moved toward the end of the 2nd trimester/into third trimester.

I've read that it is likely I will be one size early on and another size later on - so I may need to re-buy....but I'm just hoping to spend money as wisely as I can :)

would you want them as your first and second...

or as your second & third (or subsequent) children?

My brother and SIL are in town and they joked about having twins and getting all their children out at one time... they asked if I would've wanted twins at all.

In hindsight, I would have wanted twins as a ftm just because becoming parents is a shock to your system anyway! But then they asked if having twins later on (after having a singleton) would be easier since you're more confident as a parent!

What would you prefer! (as if you can choose :P)

A sorority sister of mine just announced on FB that she and her husband are pregnant with triplet boys! She said it was completely spontaneous (no fertility treatments, etc) and there is no history of multiples in her family. What a shock! They already have a little boy who will be 2 in December so she is going to be quite outnumbered with 4 sons!

Anyone else know anyone who has higher order multiples?

We're expecting twins and have the opportunity to go home (out of state) for a shower. It's a city we both grew up in and we have a family friend who does photography. The cost would be whatever we gift her with and this is the only time we would be back for her to do them.

I'll be 24 weeks. For perspective, I'm 19 weeks now but measuring 6.5 months. I figure we could do them anyway since it's basically free and if needed, could pay someone where we live now to do more if we felt my belly wasn't big enough.

Thoughts?? What would you do?

Well, my RE and OB did say carrying twins does have its risks.

Other than HG that went away at 24 weeks and a shortened cervix at 18 weeks (went away as well), the babies have been fairly healthy.

Well, yesterday, I would say I got my first complication due to having twins. Not that this is a multiples issue, if you search the boards for PROM, you'll see that it happens in singleton pregnancies, as well. For multiples, from what my OB told me, the reduced space and pressure from having a second baby in there could have contributed to PROM. (Anyone getting flashbacks to high school every time I use this abbreviation? I know. I'll try to cut down on it in the rest of my post.)

Anyway, I've been feeling so much better after I stopped my anti-nausea medication around 24 weeks and have been med free by 25 weeks.

As some of you know, my OB approved travel to fly across the country to attend a baby shower. I flew at 26w and 27w. I was feeling good and since returning I had a huge list of things to do before the 36w mark when on average twins are due. Ok... Kinda freaked out that it was 8-9 weeks away plus cut that in half if I get too uncomfortable and can't do much.

I've noticed that I've been having vaginal discharge which I heard is normal for the 3rd trimester. I saw my OB on Friday (exactly 28 weeks) and told her that I might have a yeast infection, BV (bacterial vaginosis) or something else. I gave them a sample and that was that. Oh, I also had my 1hr glucose test and an ultrasound. Everything looked fine but baby A (the girl... Baby A in the multiples world is the one who is lower and usually will be born first vaginally, if that's what happens. I believe in c-section, all bets are off. Whatever baby they can get first.) Anyway, baby A seemed to have low amniotic fluid compared to baby B. Up until this point, other ultrasounds did not show any issues with low fluid for either baby. Baby B (the boy) was growing slightly bigger than the the girl.

Well, OB wasn't too alarmed and suggested I get another u/s in two weeks. She said, it could resolve itself but could be an indicator that the baby has trouble swallowing the amniotic fluid and/or trouble with the kidneys peeing it out. My OB said amniotic fluid is pretty much what the baby drinks and pees out. I did ask her if it would help increasing my fluid intake and she said I don't have to and it wouldn't cause a significant difference.

So I didn't worry too much. The possible kidney issue did worry me a little but only thing I could do was wait.

So Saturday, I had normal amount of vaginal discharge with muscousy red pieces. I wasn't sure if that was normal for my discharge. Dr. Google said it might be cause for alarm. I thought I would wait it out. Later, at the hospital, my OB didn't say much about the symptoms on Saturday so maybe it it wasn't a sure sign of what was to come.

Sunday comes around, I lounge around the house (laying and sitting) and around 3-4p start working cleaning one of the bedrooms. I needed to make room in this bedroom so we could move the queen bed out of the will be future nursery.

I noticed while I'm working that the vaginal discharge is much more frequent and feels like a constant drip. After about 30 min, I had to change my underwear. Hmmm, I've heard that your water breaking could be a slow trickle or a gush. This was definitely a trickle, but was this normal discharge or was this amniotic fluid? Searched on Google and decided to call my OB on call line. My OB was on call (cool!) and she said I should come to the hospital to be checked out. I didn't seem too alarmed. DH wasn't feeling too well so I told him I would take myself in. It was 10 min drive and I felt fine driving myself. I didn't feel like this was an emergency. I told the DH I would call if they told me otherwise.

Walked into hospital, felt totally fine and I thought they would check me out and send me home.

Well, after a speculum (ouch!) was inserted, the fluid came back positive for amniotic fluid. Uh oh! What does that mean? Am I having these babies tonight? Tomorrow? This week?

Called the DH and told him he should make his way over to the hospital.

We spoke to my OB and she said with multiples there is an increased risk for complications. (Oh, she did mention that when I called her from home that she thought it was just going to be discharge and I was going to be sent home.) She said I did rupture my membranes but that it's a slow leak so it's possible that we could keep the babies happy until 34 weeks. (Remember 36w was our target, we just lost 2 weeks!)

She said I would stay in the hospital until the babies were born. (What?! I asked her to confirm this twice. I was shocked.) I'm 28w2d and 34 weeks is 6 weeks away. I want to do everything I can to keep the babies in til 34 weeks but that is 6 weeks of being stuck in the hospital. Eeek!

So OB's plan was to give me some antibiotics to help prevent an infection in me or the now exposed baby A. Also, I have a steroid shot to help the babies's lungs develop faster in case they come out earlier. Being in the hospital
will allow them to constantly monitor me for signs of infection (high fever, upper belly pain) and the babies (increased heart rate). Also, monitor me in case I have contractions and start going into labor. Lastly, I could start bleeding which could mean placenta abruption.

So yeah, I've been in the hospital for a little over 24 hrs. I'm feeling good and the babies are doing good. (Oh, if anyone wants to know the fluid numbers. Baby A (girl) is at a 10 and Baby B (boy) is at 17-20. Higher the number is better but I heard there is such thing as too high of a number. Oh, I heard close to term, some numbers can be closer to 5 or lower.) I'm able to work from home and will try tie up loose ends. My plan was to go out on leave in mid (maybe early Sept). I'm now out a full month ahead of time. Yeah, my boss is probably a bit panicked like I am.

So anyone out there who had PROM earlier than 32 weeks?

I found this link helpful. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/patientinstructions/000512.htm

Hi ladies! I am currently 13.5 weeks with fraternal twins and will gladly accept any advice and such :) was so unexpected but in a good way! Had most recent ultrasound on Wednesday and both were super active with heartbeats of 168 and 182! Im hoping a boy and girl... Any guesses? The one has always had a lower heart (108 at 6.5, 114 at 8.5, and now 168) and the other has always been higher (122, 188, 182)... Love to hear speculation and hopefully will know at next appt in 3 weeks!!

I'm creeping up on 34 weeks with my twins and starting to get a little freaked out about actually birthing them! Right now A is head down so we are hoping for a vaginal delivery, barring any unforeseen complications that might crop up in the next couple weeks. Anyway, I was just wondering about the birth experience of Hellobee's twin moms!

How many weeks were you when you gave birth?
Vaginal or c-section? (Or both?!)
Did you go into labor on your own, get induced, scheduled a c-section?
Sizes of your babies?
Any NICU time?
Was your partner able to cut the cords?
Did you get to do skin to skin right away?
Did you get to try breastfeeding immediately?
Were your babies able to room in with you or did they go to the nursery?

Any other anecdotes, advice, etc? Thanks!

BSB on "Epidurals and twin pregnancy"

So before I was pregnant and found out I was having with twins, I always thought I wanted to try to have a pain med-free birth. *Try* I'm not anti-meds.

Well, now that I'm in the hospital at 33 weeks with PPROM and with no strong contractions, it looks like I will likely be induced.

The thought of having a cold induction at 34 weeks sounds like I might need meds that will make me have stronger contractions versus if I go into labor on my own. So I might be in more pain.
I'm also hearing that although both babies are head down (great for chances of a vaginal birth), there is a risk of baby B (second baby) of turning breech once baby A is delivered. Oh, baby B has a risk of turning breech because once baby A is out, baby B will have more room and therefore turn from head down to breech or transverse. (There is also a chance that baby B might be bigger and baby A (who is smaller) can fit through the birth canal but baby B can't... But I'm assuming that since I'm delivering at 34 weeks that the babies are smaller and I should be able to get them both through.) I can have a breech extraction in which the Dr pulls the baby out by its feet. But, that's if the Dr is comfortable with that technique. So it sounds like a c-section could be possible.
So since a c-section is possible, they would like me to have an epidural in and flowing when I get to 5cm (active labor and when I'll be moved into the OR... Where I will be delivering the babies since the nicu is very close.)

So with all of this in mind, if I don't have an epidural and I need a c-section, I would have to be put under general anesthesia and not be awake during the delivery of my second baby (or both babies, if there are other complications).

So my thoughts are if I had to have a choice between being awake with an epidural during a c-section or being unconscious during a c-section... I would prefer to be awake.

I know, it's possible that the epidural might not work for me and I might have to get general anesthesia if I have a c-section.

I think my decision makes sense but I wonder if there's anything I'm not thinking of.

Well, other than if I do have both babies vaginally and no complications that maybe I might regret getting the epidural. Oh, in this case, I might request to turn down or turn off the epidural meds while I push out the babies. But I have to remember that, right now, I'm making my decision based on the possibility of a c-section and wanting to be awake.

I went to an expecting multiples class and the instructor suggested asking our dr about getting a temporary disability placard.

I never even thought about it. I'm okay with getting around now so I don't see the need. I don't think I'll ever need it but I have no idea if I'll be put on bed rest later and might need it.

My trigger shot was on June 5th and did two IUI's on the 6th and the 7th.

I got the BFP on June 21st 16 days after the trigger...and did a blood test on the Tuesday with HCG being 1100 and another one today (Thursday) with my HCG being past 3000.

My friend with multiples is convinced that I am having multiples bc of the high number.

BSB on "Would you let your DH be away when you are 30 weeks pregnant with twins?"

So for those of you who have had multiples, would you let your DH go to a wedding across the country (5-6 hr flight) when you are 30 weeks pregnant with twins? He would probably be gone for 3-4 days.

I know these babies could arrive at anytime and we'll have to be flexible in case anything happens from now until then.

We told the OB about this trip and she said we'll have to be flexible and decide closer to the trip.

We don't have any family nearby but we do have friends that could check on me while he is away.

I kind of want him to go. If something happens, we could pay for a last minute plane ticket for him to come back.

Am I being too laid back about this trip? Haha.

Oh, DH is part of the wedding party.

I'll also add that I'm a bit jealous that I can't go. It's in Boston and it's a greek wedding. We are hearing from the groom how expensive everything is. One of the venues they looked at had a $72K minimum! (Yes, $72K MINIMUM) This would have been the most expensive wedding I've been, too. It would have been nice to be there. It's okay. I'll see pictures.

My friend is pregnant with her first baby - twins! Because of scheduling we were going to have her shower when she is 33.5 weeks along. Is that too late for a mom of multiples? She has no known complications but is only like 15 weeks now.
