Are there any risks anyone knows of of flying in the first trimester? I’ll also be asking my OB this week. I’m scheduled to fly to a wedding next weekend and I’m super worried about it.

DH and I have been planning a birthday trip for him in May to Santorini and maybe another island in Greece. I'll be in my 20th week of pregnancy.

I asked my NP during my first OB visit and while she got really excited at first (she went there for her honeymoon), she did say that if a medical emergency came up, the only option is a med flight to Athens. I'm A- bloodtype so am mostly worried about bleeding and needing to get a shot of Rhogam. She left it with, just know the risks, and maybe talk to the OB during my next visit (in 2 weeks). But we'd like to book the travel sooner than later and I feel silly calling the office to ask to speak with their one very busy OB about my vacation.

So I know this is a really privileged problem to have, but would you cancel the trip and go somewhere more local with access to emergency medical care?

Hi All,

My husband and I are considering trying for a second baby next year. I am a crazy planner and would like to get our family summer vacation worked out. Originally we were thinking about going back to Aruba, but because of Zika, we have to change our plans.

Any summer vacation spots non Zika? We live on the east coast (NJ) and not really interested in going west and dealing with much of a time zone change, therefore Hawaii is a no for us. We like resorts, but would consider a house rental. Doesn't have to be a beach, but some sort of water would be nice, like a lake. Oh and toddler friendly!

So I may be taking 3 airplane trips within a 1 month span while in my 2nd trimester. First is a 2.5 hour trip (each way) at 14 weeks, then a 5 hour at 16 weeks, then a 6 hour at 20 weeks. I am not high risk but just not sure if that's crazy! The 16 week trip is to Hawaii and would be for fun but I could reschedule to when I'm 24 weeks. Would 24 weeks still be enjoyable for a Hawaii vacation? My gut is saying 3 trips in a month is too much but would love to hear from others who traveled a lot while pregnant. Thank you!!

We're looking to go on a babymoon this fall. We've had a rough year with miscarriage and infertility and I'm finally pregnant and need to relax/celebrate.

We want to go somewhere this fall that is relaxing but not beachy (zika). Some ideas we had were somewhere in new england for fall foliage and sweater weather, or maybe Portland Oregon. Somewhere with good food.

Any recommendations? We've been to most big cities already and are mostly looking for something quaint, relaxing, with good food, but also not hard to get to from an airport

Would love some thoughts/input on this:

A little backstory - m/c last summer so tons of anxiety that has slowly improved with the help of a therapist but also with the nice progression of my current pregnancy.

I have the option of traveling to work to CA or FL (Tampa & Orlando) in July. DH and my 2 yo will be coming with and I am leaning heavily towards FL because of the shorter flight time (comforting for me and LO) and being more familiar w/ FL (easier to get around, have friends to visit, etc.) My only concern right now is the potential for zika virus. At the moment there is no "known" risk, especially in that area and if I do go, I plan on taking every precaution as if it were present. My question is, is it actually feasible to take all precautions (i.e. DEET, long sleeves/pants) and will they be enough to make me feel confident in not getting bitten? Also, I know FL is known for humidity and heat in the summer (which I am sort of accustomed to having been to SE Asia in the summers growing up) but will I be absolutely miserable to the point of not wanting to go outdoors? Any local tips for managing being out in the heat? We do plan on going to Disney for a day or two but have no plans to rush to see/do too much..

Any thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

So I'm in a bit of a dilemma. DH and I are supposed to go to Vegas for a little babymoon (and mostly to just get out of crumby Midwest weather!) next week for 3 nights. However, there's a good chance his mom is going to be having surgery now while we'd be gone. He feels like if this is the case, he shouldn't go and be with his mom and dad. I totally support whatever he decides.

However, the trip is totally paid for (airfare and hotel) and non-refundable. I looked into the travel insurance from our credit card and it doesn't cover in the case of a parent.

I'm really contemplating just going by myself. I already have the time off work and then at least not all of the money would go down the drain. I definitely wouldn't be doing anything "Vegas-y", more just laying by the pool and enjoying yummy meals. Would you go by yourself?

So now that this pregnancy is a little more real (7 weeks), I'm starting to reevaluate my vacation plans. I had originally booked a trip to Disney world that was to be end of August/beginning of September; that's out, since my due date is September 14th. I also had a house booked for the second week in October down in Jupiter, FL. Trip with a 2-4 week old: probably not a good idea.

So now I'm thinking of maybe doing Myrtle Beach. We went a couple of years ago and I really liked it. I'd plan it for earlier in the summer, when I'm in my third tri (around 28-31 weeks). Is mb a Zika concern area? Will I even want to go on vacation then, or should I just scrap everything?

Hello bees!

My husband and are thinking about an extended trip to Europe. My parents recently moved abroad, and we could stay with them half of the time, and travel half of the time.

However, we don't want to put off TTC any longer. Have you ever traveled outside the country for 6-8 weeks (or more) when pregnant? Is this a crazy idea?

We're aware that I may not be feeling my best, and that of course if there are any complications/risk the trip would be off. We'd try to time the trip to take place during the 2nd trimester.

It is a million degrees where we live, so DH and I are thinking of taking a 4-5 day vacation without DD before DS is born. We are thinking early August, I'll be 26ish weeks.
We are considering Northern California or Colorado, but are open to suggestions.
I am having bad back issues, so we won't be super active, but would like some things to do.
Any suggestions?

We were supposed to go to Mexico in March but I was in my first trimester of pregnancy and canceled due to the Zika travel advisory. Because we were bummed to cancel, we booked a replacement trip for August to Hilton Head, SC (supposed to visit the in-laws for a couple of days at their house in SC and then head to the beach). When I asked one of the docs in my practice months ago about travel to SC, she said to cancel if there were any home-grown Zika incidences in the continental U.S., which happened in FL on Friday. I asked another doc at my practice today and her advice was that there is no Zika in South Carolina and that even though it is on the CDC watch list, it is still ok to go so long as I wear deet and stay away from FL. So now I've gotten two different opinions... We have a Plan B vacation planned to a resort outside Toronto on Lake Huron (no Zika risk there but I'm definitely not as excited about the trip). If it were you, would you err on the side of caution and stay north or would try not to worry and continue with the original plan? Ugh. Getting the conflicting opinions just made everything harder. I'd just hate to miss out on another vacation if I'm being irrationally cautious when it's not an imminent threat (as of today, there are only 4 cases of home grown Zika in a specific neighborhood of Miami).

I've never been before and am looking for tips on nice hotels (gorgeous pool and easy beach access are a must; not looking for kid-friendly since my DDs will stay with their grandparents), as well as must-do activities and great restaurants.

The timing of this baby is quite a surprise and we were hoping to take our daughter to Disney World for her 3rd birthday in Sept. I have the whole trip planned out I just have to hit confirm.

I'll be 25 weeks when we go... we fly out fri morning with less than 3 hours on the plane, check in and spend the day by the pool, hit up disney springs in the evening for dinner. Do magic kingdom on sat and either go back to magic kingdom on Sun or do epcot. Monday - character breakfast on her birthday, check out and fly home. I would def get the travel insurance.

Is there anything I'm not considering? do anything differently? Am i crazy?

I'm going to the dr for my first appt on 6/1 but i think we'd at least put the deposit down before that

I found 1 website that listed only about 6 rides i wouldn't be able to go on (splash mt, space mt, etc) but i would still be pretty cautious.

I have a week-long beach vacation scheduled for July in Galveston - right along the Gulf coast of Texas. As of right now, the CDC is not reporting any instances of zika in the area. However, there have been several articles/reports recently about if/when the virus reaches the US, it will likely be along the coast (Florida, Texas, etc).

I'm wondering if we should cancel our trip. I don't want to be stressed about it the whole time (or, have the CDC announce a zika alert weeks./days before our trip when it's too late to get our money back) -- but at the same time, there are currently no reported cases and I'll take all normal precautions (cover up, bug repellent, etc). And I could really use a getaway!

Just wondering if I'm being overly concerned...or would you cancel if you were in my shoes?

Thanks!

ETA: I'll be 20 weeks pregnant in July when the trip is scheduled.

A little background:
1 - miscarried last pregnancy
2 - ttc 17 months and only conceived after I completely stopped my excercise regimen.

Meaning I'm concerned that I maybe sensitive to physical stress.

So question 1:
I have to go get my motorcycle from storage. Would I be safe for me to ride it about 10 minutes home? Will vibrations hurt the baby? I'll be 7 weeks.

Question 2:
Some friends invited me for a day ride in May. It's 2 hours there, 2 hours back. Is this too much? I'll be around 11 - 12 weeks then. Should I back out?

Advice from everyone is appreciated but from other riders would be super helpful. Thanks!

We are leaving in one week for Disney and I'll be about 6.5 weeks along. The original plan was to wait to TTC until after we got back but...oops. :) I have generally avoided travel in the first tri due to morning sickness and my history of loss so I'm a bit stressed right now. My only other experience traveling in the first tri was between 5 and 6 weeks (with my now LO). My morning sickness with her wasn't nearly as bad as with my other pregnancies so I lucked out. I'm not feeling terrible right now so I'm hoping we luck out this time too.

We'll be on a tight budget preparing for baby's arrival, but I really just want to park my butt by the beach and have the option of checking out local things maybe. Planning end of August, want to go for one week.

So:
1) Zika-free
2) tropical/beachy and warm
3) all inclusive would be a nice bonus

I thought about Greece or Italy, but because I don't want to move around too much I feel like I'd miss out on a great deal of food and culture if I were to mainly just stay on a resort.

I'm leaning towards like... Thailand? Any other suggestions?
Hawaii doesn't have all inclusives and it's quite expensive there.

I'm heading home for Thanksgiving and can't wait to visit with family and friends; however, I will be flying in from Australia, which means about 29 hours of travel each way. It's not a fun journey at the best of times, but given I will be just shy of 10 weeks when I fly out, and 12 weeks when I return, I'm a bit nervous about how it's all going to go.

Anyone take any long distance flights during the first trimester? Any tips or advice as to how to make it bearable? So far, I've had no MS and am hoping it doesn't make a surprise appearance in the next week or so. I plan on drinking loads of water and have already requested an aisle seat, but any other advice from pregnant moms who flew long distance? Thanks!

STUPID ZIKA VIRUS has decided to infiltrate all of our ideas for places to go!!! Including fun Central America, a lot of the Caribbean, USVI, Puerto Rico, etc. Darn it. I don't think it's in Turks and Caicos yet.... and today I heard cases were found in Florida and Hawaii, too.

If you were planning a sunny babymoon now, where would you go?

We're pricing out a babymoon across the pond :) Still unsure about the Keys, and Europe is closer to here than Hawaii. Flights are sort of cheap from here (!?) + we'd get one free on miles cause it's early May before high season starts.

We'd take a puddle jumper to NYC, then red eye to major European city, then cab to train station, then train for 1.5 hrs, then taxi for 1.5 hrs. While 6 months pregnant. And then be in one of the most beautiful, romantic parts of the world without our 2 year old! For 6 days!

Does this sound like hell to you or a dream?

We are starting to discuss a family trip and my not-yet pregnant sister doesn't want to plan it for this summer saying she could be too pregnant during that time to fly. They have yet to start TTC. My mom thinks spring is too soon and fall would mean sister *could* have a newborn.

I'm rather annoyed since my parents were really looking forward to this trip and now it might get pushed back for a not-yet conceived baby. Even if she got pregnant next month she would only be 6-7 months in June.

What's the latest you've flown pregnant?

I flew at 32 weeks and was mis.er.a.ble. My legs swelled up and my ankles felt like they were going to explode. I drank a ton of water but it didn't help. I wouldn't do it again!

I put this on the travel boards, but it's more like lack of travel :) due to physical restrictions early on, DH and I didn't get to plan a Babymoon. Honestly, I wouldn't have been up for much travel anyway!

This weekend is finally free from plans and we just want to enjoy each other's company!! Any ideas of what we can do?? I was thinking of a drive through Christmas light display and that's as far as I can get........ We don't want to do a hotel because we'd have to board the dogs and DH is not into spa days (I had one a couple weeks ago).

Thoughts??

I read on the TSA Blog that pregnant women can opt out of walking through the scanner and request a pat-down instead. We're heading out on vacation tomorrow and I'm 24 weeks pregnant. What have other people done?

Just got an email that I can upgrade to first class for my flight next week. I'll be flying across the country (5.5 hr flight) on a red eye flight.

Email said I can upgrade for $260 and includes 2 free checked bags and other usual features. I'm flying back east for our baby shower so I'll be bringing extra luggage to take things back home.

Is first class worth it at 26 weeks pregnant with twins?

I'm pretty cheap with flights and I usually get the cheapest flights I can get, but maybe I should splurge and upgrade. We have the money but it will be coming from our baby funds account.

Being able to lay back does sound so nice. Oh, I've never flown first class. Always been in coach.

Oh, I'll be flying alone. DH left today to head back east since he needed to stay longer.

After you are 36 weeks pregnant, how far away from home would you feel comfortable traveling by car? By comfortable, I don't just mean physical comfort, but also what you are emotionally comfortable with (in case something were to happen).

Has anyone who had an SCH had to ask their doctor about travel? What did they say?

I was really looking forward to a work event later this month, but just got the OK to book it from my boss, and since I was dxed with a SCH on Monday, I'm wondering if flying would be safe? A direct flight is about an hour and a half, so it's not super long.

Am I being paranoid? Or would you ask your doctor if you were me?
