My second kid was born at 36 weeks. Apparently it was due to a small placental abruption. I'm little nervous this I will deliver early again this time, or even earlier. I know previous early deliveries increase your risk. But I have no idea by how much. Or how likely it is to go full term.

What was your experience? What did your ob/mw tell you?

I heard a really interesting interview on NPR today of the couple who authored this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Juniper-Girl-Who-Born-Soon/dp/0316324426

It's about the journey of parents to a micro-preemie. The interview was great and the book seems to have good reviews. Thought some of our preemie and micro-preemie parents might enjoy the book (linked above).

My NICU had 6 and 9 month follow up call. Since they had torticollis, the babies have been doing weekly physical therapy at the same clinic that does NICU follow-ups. DS graduated from PT today. DD will be assessed next week. The PT mentioned that not all nicu follow up or check in on NICU patients after discharge. I was surprised to hear that.

If both babies do graduate from PT, the PT recommended coming back in before preschool to check on things. I think that is a great idea to be ahead of any issues.

Did your preemie hit their milestones early or late, based on adjusted age? And how early of a preemie were they?

A friend had her baby 3 weeks early and she was 9lbs at birth. She is now three months old and only breastfeeding but she isn't gaining weight. Shes 10 lbs at three months. She cries non stop and its a very very unhappy baby cry. She isn't supplementing and said she spits up all the bm she eats every feeding.

I'm concerned and don't know if I should suggest supplementing. I don't want to overstep boundaries with her. I see her one time a year. The Drs gave her a syringe to assist with feeding but she doesn't use it. She also has a cough and eye mucous. I'm Really concerned but should I just leave it alone or try to get her to take this more seriously ...

My heart goes out to one of my old classmates. On Saturday, her water broke at 34 weeks gestation. Little Zaiden was born at 10:34 (I think) in the morning. After birth he was put on a ventilator and was hooked up to all these machines. The next day they took him off of the ventilator and had him on oxygen. With progress they removed the oxygen. As of this morning he started taking a turn in health with them resuscitating him three times. He has been put back on the oxygen. He also has a very premature nervous system and shakes really bad. If you could all pray for this little on that would be great. If you want to you can like the Facebook page Prayers For Zaiden Burghardt. Every prayer counts. Thank you!

Our little miracle baby, Matilda Jane, was born by emergency C-section last week at 32 weeks, 1 day after a very complicated pregnancy. We are absolutely in love and so overjoyed to finally meet her :) It is a very long story, but Matilda had heart issues that required her to be delivered early. Mom also had some sudden health issues (I have an extremely large DVT and pulmonary embolism) so it was a pretty scary time for all of us. Her delivery was extremely traumatic and we almost lost her - she is truly a miracle and a real fighter!

I am hoping that other preemie and NICU moms can share their advice and tips - how did you cope during this terrifying and overwhelming time? I would also love to hear about any must-have preemie/NICU items. I already bought a hands-free pumping bra and it is awesome! We definitely weren't ready for Mattie's arrival and still have to buy pretty much everything so any recommendations for things that were helpful at home are very welcome too!

My husband has been amazing - he hasn't left her side since she was born. I was in the hospital for six days after her birth and was discharged last night. He was present for her very scary resuscitation and is so terrified (I was still waking up from surgery). I know we are coping the best we can right now (and I can't believe what a truly amazing daddy he is!), but would love to hear how you and your partner coped and supported each other. I am still pretty sick so I have had to leave so much up to him and that has been hard for me not to be there all the time.

Thank you so much everyone! I really appreciate your help and advice :)

Just wanted to start up a board for preemie moms for support and advice.

A little about my teeny one: DD was born at 30wk+6 and in the NICU for 34 days. This Wednesday will be 2 weeks since her discharge home and today was my first day with DH back at work. DD is doing great, is now 6lbs (born 3lb 5oz) and just finished her 3oz bottle in 14 min! (It's definitely the little things with these teeny ones  )

I am struggling right now with deciding whether to continue trying to nurse or just exclusively pump. LO's sucking is still a little weak and she hardly gets anything when nursing (and I'm left even more sore than prior to the feed).

What worked with your preemie? What did you struggle most with? Any general advice? Best preemie gear?

Hi ladies,

I will be having our daughter via RCS between 35-36 weeks if all goes well until then. My son was born at 34 and there was a NICU team in the room ready to take him. He had some low O2 readings so they put him on a cpap for overnight and he needed help regulating his temp for a few days. He also spent 22 days feeding and growing.

My question is for you mamas who delivered between 35-36 weeks, did they take the baby to the NICU right away? Did they allow you to try to BF? I'm just wondering how they determine if the baby is able to try BFing right away. I would really love to do that. It seems if there are just some breathing issues that doesn't necessarily mean baby is unable to feed orally right away. I would really love to try nursing right away. But maybe that just isn't an option.

Could you share your experience.

Hey mamas.

As @Mrs. Green Grass reminded me, November is prematurity awareness month. I was thinking about doing a swarm type post on the blog from the bloggers who've had preemies to talk a little about our experiences. @Mrs. Twine suggested we open this up to the boards, which is a great idea!

Would any of you like to write up a paragraph about your experience, or what you've learned, or a lasting memory, whatever you'd like really? You can include pic(s) of your LO if you'd like. I can work up what I'd like to say and post it tonight if you're curious.

Please let me know if any of you are interested! We have really varied experiences on the board, and I know it would be helpful for other parents going through similar things.

My daughter was born this thursday at 30 weeks, she weighed 3 lbs 2oz and is expected to be in the NICU for about 6 weeks. I just got discharged and am trying to learn what I can about preemies and anything I can do to prepare or care for her (besides what the doctors and nurses have already told me), I don't really know where to start. I noticed some babies in the NICU were wearing little onesies. No one said anything to me about dressing her and I guess I'm wondering if that is more of an uncomfortable hassle for her at this point or not, or when people start dressing their preemies? I plan to ask the nurses but I'd love to hear what some parents who've had this experience think. Any other recommendations are welcome too! Thank you!

Olive came 5 weeks early which is just shy of being premature, and I think it's still affecting her three years later! She had a sensory issue, and it caused a significant delay in her development. She's catching up, thanks to EI and sensory therapy.

We love her and wouldn't change a thing! But I have been surprised at how many symptoms she's shown that were predicted given her somewhat premature status.

If your baby came early, do you still see a difference in their development?

Hello preemie moms! I wanted to get your opinion. My friend started a support group/charity for parents of preemies. She does up care packages and delivers them to the local NICUs. My mom is very talented with all things handmade, and I wanted to commission her to make something to donate.

I was thinking hats, but maybe you ladies have a better idea??

Thanks!!

What physical retail stores have a decent selection of preemie sizes?

My cousin's daughter just gave birth to twins and her mom has been looking all over for preemie hats!

When did they start walking? (Chronological age)?
