@Ms. RV: We do help her. But then she's on her tummy, which she hates. I'm pretty sure that's partly why she won't roll!

@Mrs. Turtle: DS has health issues and his pediatrician said don't be concerned if he doesn't roll or crawl. Kids that have an atypical start to life have atypical development. What is important is that they are showing improvement.

Do you ever help her get the whole way over when she gets that close? Our PT recommends that bur honestly I don't know if does anything :silly:

@Mrs. Turtle: withdrawals :-( :-( :-( terrible
Yeah I read somewhere bc of the popularity of swaddling, a lot of "that generation" of babes don't roll quite as early as when swaddling wasn't a thing. FWIW!

Yes, my 8 month baby is like that. her motor skills have improved with less carrier/carseat/swaddle time, and more tummy / back time.

6m started sitting
7.5-8m started rolling
8.5m rocking on her hands and knees but not crawling

@pachamama: Ah, good point. She was swaddled a lot at first because she was having withdrawals. Later we moved to the swaddle me up, which we are still using most of the time, due to a REALLY strong startle reflex that hasn't quite gone away yet.

@Mrs. Turtle: was she swaddled as a baby by any chance? I heard that can delay the rolling over bc their upper body isn't as developed. They catch up though! It happened to my son.

@Mrs. Turtle: This looks just like what my DD2 is doing. She’s been sitting for at least a month but only recently started rolling in the last week or so. She was doing that side to side thing like in your picture for a while before actually doing a complete roll. However, I’d say if you are concerned at all, go with your gut. My first DD has plagiocephaly (flat head) from lying on her back but her ped said it seemed normal. We ended up seeing a different doctor who referred us too physical therapist. The PT specialized in plagiocephaly and gave us some homework to increase her neck strength and she showed a ton of improvement after that. I’m glad we saw that second doctor before it was too late to correct her issue.

@Kaohinani: Thanks! We are all pretty big fans too. We joke with our agency that we only take the cutest ones. Thanks for sharing about your son. It's funny, N does not seem too interested in being mobile (although over the last week or so she's working harder to actually roll), but she sure isn't relaxed about anything else. It'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I hope she walks before 18 months...she's already about 20 lbs and I feel like she kills my neck and back already!

Oh.My.Goodness! She is SOOO adorable! 😍 I love her gorgeous hair AND just LOOK at those legs! 💕

Ok, now that I'm done admiring her mass adorableness... My DS sat up for extended periods unassisited (1 to 1-1/2 minutes) around 5 1/2 months but had only rolled over a handful of times. He was great with tummy time and could extend himself to an "upward facing dog sun salutation" but was not interested in mobilizing. He was late to crawl and it was more of an Army crawl (* Fitting as DH was Active Duty at the time 🤣). He was also late to walk on his own (unsupported) and did so at 18 mos even if he was able to "walk" supported from 7 mos on. His pediatrician stated he was a lackadaisy baby who "knew he could do it but had no need to prove his abilities and was in no rush" (verbatim). At nearly 4, DS can complete somersaults, "up-downs," walk a low high beam (quite the oxymoron, there. Lol), and dance better than his 10-year-old sister. His only delay has been one we did NOT expect - a severe speech delay. I suppose my point is that as long as you are on top of it (always trust your instincts) and the pediatrician does not assume it to be a remarkable delay, she should be just fine.

She has her 6m appointment later this month, but other than mentioning it there I don't see much of a need to push for a referral yet. I'm 99% sure she won't qualify for any services.
We agree, she's pretty darn cute even if she's a little.... opinionated... sometimes.

She's adorable!

If I remember correctly my lo (who's 3 now 😭) rolled a couple times early on and then just ignored that and learned to sit up. She also never really crawled. My ped wasn't concerned as long as she was learning new things and progressing. Not sure if it's different with a drug exposed lo but I wouldn't be concerned

@peaches1038: Good to know! I blame it on her rigidity that she's been dealing with since birth due to prenatal drug exposure. She's been very happy lying flat on her back, and her body tends to arch instead of bend. Until recently, she never lifted her legs up while lying down, so she just didn't even try to roll. Also, she HATES tummy time, so it has been more limited than would be ideal.

DS (3 next week) sat independently way before rolling. We couldn’t do tummy time because he had some respiratory issues and we were instructed not to as it would be too much stress on his lungs. He sat independently at 5 months and probably didn’t roll until maybe 9 or 10 months? He started walking 2 weeks after his first bday. No one (except me haha) was concerned about his lack of rolling.

Anyone else? Did your baby roll shortly after or just go to crawling/scooting? N will be 6 months on Monday and is sitting for up to maybe 30 seconds or a minute unassisted, but hasn't rolled over. Well, she rolled from front to back once or twice early on, but it was completely accidental and she hasn't since. She's VERY close to getting from back to front, but can't get her giant head off the floor. :silly: She seems pretty on target developmentally otherwise, but our adoptions worker asked in her last visit if she'd been referred for a regional center assessment yet. She hasn't, but I'm wondering if I should be pushing for one.

Thanks all! This is good to hear. I think DD2 was sitting by 7 months, and I honestly don't remember with DD1!

@MrsSRS: That's a slightly different practice tip than I've heard before - will definitely try it. With DD2 we did some sitting in the corner of a small cardboard box with toys inside, and that worked quickly. Thanks!

@delight: Same - she has probably had less practice time for gross motor things b/c it's hard to put her down w/o her three year old sister harassing her.

My DD didn't sit unsupported until 9m but army crawled well before then. I remember worrying about it at the time.
DS is 7.5 months and I feel a slight worry again. He just flops over head first if we try sitting. I admit I don't practice as much as I should with him because I have a busy 3 y/o. He can roll both ways so I'm not too concerned. If he isn't sitting by 9m I'll ask about it at his appointment. Since he is following a similar pattern as DD, I don't feel the need to ask about it before then. I do understand the worry though. I see lots of babies around me at the groups we go to that are 5/6 months that are already sitting.

Mine was similar and was happy to flop over - maybe it's a temperament thing? She was born full term as well. She sat up on her own a little before she turned 9 months, started commando crawling a few weeks later, started traditional crawling a month after that, and started walking right when she turned 13 months. Her ped didn't seem concerned at her 9-month appointment when I said she wasn't sitting up yet.

My first LO started sitting up around that time. I was really anxious and he didn't start walking until 16 months and we had set up a consultation with EI when he started walking. My second LO was even later. He didn't really sit up until he was close to a year. We did pursue EI for him and he was described as low tone and has been in PT for a little over a year. Now that my younger is in PT it is clear to me that muscle tone is a spectrum and that my older is also lower tone. Not enough to warrant therapy but still. Even at 2.75 he couldn't walk up stairs (he crawled) and that is a goal my youngest has at PT and has already mastered at slightly over 2.

DD3 is 8 months old, and still does not sit unassisted. She'll sit in tripod for a few seconds, then flops over onto her tummy, where she's perfectly happy. Technically she's more like 7 months based on gestational age - she was considered early term at birth so her pediatrician often gives her a little extra time to meet milestones.....but still.

Her next ped appointment is at 9 months; I'm trying to decide if this is serious enough that I should get her in earlier to see if it's time to consider some sort of EI approach. She's meeting all social milestones with flying colors, is a VERY strong kicker (but tries to avoid putting weight on her legs), and has great head/trunk control when playing on her tummy; she is mobile via rolling and inching, but can't crawl with her belly up either.

Anyone else have a late sitter who is willing to share which direction it went (ie., you left it alone and they sat, or you got some help from an OT or someone else)? Thanks!
