My 1-year-old wants to throw everything in the toilet. My 4-year-old likes to wait until it is an emergency to pee. Is there a toilet lock (or other solution!) that will work for us?

We bought a simple baby gate for the top of the stairs.

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/evenflo-top-of-stairs-gate-0462233p.html#srp

We have two cats and they are getting older and cannot jump over the gate. (We have another on the main floor they cannot get over)

Our idea was to raise the gate off the ground a few inches so they can squeeze underneath. But the instructions say it should not be more than 3" off the ground.

Is the only reason for this because the risk LO could get under? We.would definitely make sure LO does not fit but the cats do.

Or is there another reason? I don't want to put LO in danger but I also dont want the cats injuring themselves if they try to jump. A solution to keep both safe is what we need!

periwinklebee on "Home alarm system"

I'd like to have a home alarm system primarily for the smoke/CO monitoring (so if there's a fire while we're away, the fire department will get called before the house burns down). Looking for insights on what companies others have used and whether you've been satisfied....

To (try to) make a long story short, my dilemma is that the previous residents had a fancy system installed by a company called American Alarm. We looked into renewing the contract, but the salesperson was incredibly obnoxious and the monitoring fees are really expensive relative to Ring. We told our contractor (we're doing some renovations) that we didn't want to renew with them - but he disregarded this and had them come out and do an (outrageously, in my view) expensive repair to a portion of the system that got disconnected during the renovations. He's now arguing forcefully against changing to a new system, claiming that Ring is a total joke, etc, etc. But perhaps it's just because he screwed up on having our old system repaired, and doesn't want us arguing that we won't pay for it since we told him we didn't want it...

Ring has much cheaper monitoring and some nice features, but the costs of changing hardware add up and of course they could always increase their monitoring prices - which are pretty cheap now relative to their competitors. The alarm hardware itself is not too pricey, with frequent promotions, but what starts to get really expensive in switching systems is that all of our smoke and CO detectors are hooked into the current alarm system and won't work if it's disconnected. By the time you count the alarms in the unfinished basement and attic, there's a lot of them, and smart alarms (which have safety features I really like) are expensive... Our thermostats are also hardwired into the alarm system, and I'm not 100% sure what will happen to them if the alarm system is disconnected. I'm not a handy person and DH is even less handy, and I worry about the time costs and potential to screw something up with installing new alarm sensors, wired smoke detectors, etc. The fact that I'm nearly 8 months pregnant is making it feel more overwhelming.

On the other hand, I know once I sign a multi-year monitoring contract with American Alarm, if something goes wrong with the existing system you are essentially hostage and they can charge a lot for repairs or new equipment. It kind of feels like dealing with Comcast...

Bottom line: switch to a system with much cheaper monitoring costs (for now at least), and eat the expense and hassle of installing a bunch of new equipment in the short-run, or just suck it up and pay for the monitoring costs with the system that we already have all the functioning hardware for...

Following up on Ms. Bee's blog post... At what age are you willing or able to take two kids to the pool solo? My kids are 6 and 1/2 (turning 7 in August) and 4. Both are good swimmers for their age but I still don't prefer to take them to the pool on my own. not sure if it is a safety issue or an anxiety issue or both. I am referring in my case to a public pool with tons of lifeguards!

I'm not sure how to react about something that happened at DS's school this week. The school threw an end-of-year carnival, and there was an incident with one of the inflatable games.. As far as I can tell, too many kids got on, and then it collapsed. Thankfully everyone was pulled out quickly, and I don't know of anyone going to the hospital, but quite a few kids had really bad bruising. I know stuff happens, but if it was like DS says and more kids were allowed to get on than the ride can handle, the school.and carnival staff goofed big time. It could have ended much worse, and I'm really really hoping no one was hurt badly enough to have lasting problems.

For context, this is the second time this year the school is doing something kind of unsafe and not showing great judgment. Last month they had a student performance and invited the entire school. Everyone showed up with parents, grandparents, siblings. It was beyond overcrowded. IMO, if one person had panicked and started shoving others to get out, there would have been a stampede. Again, they meant well, and the students and teachers put so much effort into the event, but the result was kind of awful. Afterwards there was an apology letter from the principal saying they didn't expect the turnout and will plan better next year.

The principal is kind of new. She's amazing, overall. I don't want to go in guns blazing, being all accusatory. They were doing something that was supposed to be fun for the kids, and I don't even 100% know the carnival thing was preventable. Or that the school staff knew the ride limits - that's probably on the ride attendants... But I also don't feel right saying nothing... I'd like some kind of assurance that when the kids go to school, they won't be put in harm's way.

So, if I do say something, what do I say? "You're the adult, please use common sense and don't plan unsafe things?" I mean, I just don't know what we should be afraid of next since apparently school.events and parties can be safety hazards. And I want to be nice about it but at the same time this kind of seems like a big deal...

Thoughts on visible names on clothing?

DD is in Kindergarten and joined a daisy Girl Scout troop this year. The leader suggested getting their names embroidered on the backs of their vests and all the parents agreed. Later the same evening we were talking about our first cookie booth and how the girls would obviously need to wear their vests/uniforms. I asked if anyone wanted to revisit the names on the vests thing, thinking about the girls being out in public. Everyone was still fine with it. Logically I don't think anything will happen. She's not going to be alone anywhere public in the ages she's wearing this particular uniform (K & 1st). I'm just not used to being the biggest worrywort. Usually I'm far from it. However, I've had a few interactions at my local grocery stores specifically which lead me to remove my work badge before entering because I don't want anyone to see my first and last name. Of course, that's first and last name and I think first and last is different.

Am I just showing my 80s stranger danger training?

Today I was rushing out the door with my 3-year-old to get him to school and me to a meeting. There was an icy rain/snow mix in the forecast and I knew that I'd be running late inevitably.

When I got him situated in his car seat, big coat off and draped over him, I forgot to BUCKLE HIM IN!!! I didn't notice until I got him out after we got to school, probably because his coat was draped over him. He was happily eating his Mickey Mouse waffle in the back seat while I drove for 10 minutes, all the while unbuckled! I feel like such a careless jerk :crying: Thank goodness nothing happened.

I didn't know what category to put this under, so I chose "safety"...

Do any of you girls have to worry about snakes in your yard? If so, what do you do to make sure it is safe before your kids go out to play? And do you take some steps in general to prevent places for snakes to hide out (i.e., not keep sheds or keep your plants trimmed back)?

Thanks for any tips. I'm little bit dying inside right now after realizing snakes are a bit of a bigger concern than I previously thought at the house I'm moving to this week.

My husband recently had a major medical scare and it's left me both relieved that I was there at the time, but also terrified about what might happen if he's home alone, or alone with kids, in the event of another emergency. My oldest DS is about to turn 4 and seems old enough to handle a few emergency procedures. We were thinking about starting with:

1) having him memorize address and phone numbers
2) be able to call important people from our phones or from alexa
3) setting up the Ask My Buddy skill on alexa which basically creates an alert network of friends and family

I'm hesitant to actually teach him how to dial 911 right now since I'm not confident he could distinguish a true emergency yet. I was wondering what approach others took toward teaching their kids these things. Is there anything I'm missing? Anything that worked well for your kids?

I know this is not a fun topic to think about, but the post about drowning inspired me to look up statistics on accidental deaths by age group, and I found it really informative: https://www.cdc.gov/injury/images/lc-charts/leading_causes_of_death_highlighting_unintentional_2016_1040w800h.gif

In particular, there are more than 2x as many accidental suffocations by children under one than drownings of 1-4 year olds each year, even though by construction there are around 4x more 1-4 year olds. My husband has laughed at me for being really paranoid about accidental suffocation, but I feel vindicated. Motor vehicle deaths for infants are actually incredibly rare.

And it's also insane how much motor vehicle accidents go through the roof for the 15-24 category, as well as unintentional poisoning (drug overdoses). My biggest takeaway is that while I need to be vigilant, LO is pretty safe before the age of 15 but things get much more dangerous once he's old enough to drive and potentially do drugs. I have newfound sympathy for parents of teenagers/college aged kids who tell me to enjoy it while it's easy

Fyi - this is total deaths to all causes: https://www.cdc.gov/injury/images/lc-charts/leading_causes_of_death_age_group_2016_1056w814h.gif

Haha, okay, it's a weird title...but....

I'm looking for a 3-in-1 (harnessed convertible to high back booster to backless booster) seat suitable for my six year old daughter. She's 44 inches and 38 lbs. I was ready to pull the trigger on a Graco Tranzitions (because, PINK!) - but read several reviews saying the crotch strap was pretty short.

Do you have a carseat for an older kiddo (esp. a girl who wears lots of dresses) where the crotch strap is NOT an issue? I really need her buckling/unbuckling herself, so a crotch strap that makes this tricky is an absolute dealbreaker. Open to all price points - she'll use it for a long time or will pass it to one of her two sisters!

I realized this weekend we need to get some stair gates up, pronto. DD3 still isn’t walking, but she got upstairs scary quick this weekend without anyone realizing it. Thankfully nothing bad happened, but I can’t let it happen again.

Our bannisters are very thick (5-6 inch) pillars at the top and bottom. DH won’t let me drill into them, and it looks to me like the traditional stair adapter kits won’t fit something so wide. Any ideas for products or DIY hacks? At the bottom I might be able to wall mount on one side and go up one step to use the decorative metal bannister on the other, but at the top I’m stuck with the huge wood bannisters, I think. I was under the impression that pressure mounted gates are not good for stairs, although I think they actually might work in our situation if they’re not dangerous.

I have a history of PPA, mainly in the areas of health and safety. We live in AZ, so it's very common to have houses with pools. We ourselves have a pool in the backyard, and our backdoor is VERY childproofed (most adults can't open it). We swim almost every day May-Sept with LO and have since he was 6 months old - he is 2y4m now. It is too hot to play outside other than pool play.

He got really, really good at swimming with a puddle jumper last year, and I don't really worry about him swimming while wearing it. Historically I have never allowed him to be swimming with anyone but DH & I. MIL & FIL babysit him at our house daily and I've made it clear multiple times that they are not to go swimming with him - there are *so* many other things they can do. They are both very attentive to him but I am just afraid of a freak accident. They used to be EMTs 25-30 years ago and FIL was a police officer for 30 years.

Anyway... they live in a resort retirement complex with 3 pools, one of which is a "children's" pool, 2-3 feet, not sure about lifeguards. They have been babysitting at their place more often because I'm home with baby. DH made the mistake of telling them a month ago that they could take him swimming, and unbeknownst to me, they've now gone with him 3 times this past month - they bought him gear, including a puddle jumper, to keep at their house.

Anyway.... I feel uneasy about this but I don't know if it's logic or anxiety talking. How would you feel in this situation?

ETA: They babysit at their house about 1x a week currently, and starting in the fall it will be about 1x a month, but the pool is heated and open year-round.

This is so heartbreaking. My kids are too big and noisy for me to forget them now, but for those with little ones who might fall asleep, consider using the “Bag in the Back” idea!

https://www.wsj.com/articles/from-a-mothers-tragedy-a-call-to-action-1525274572

For those who don’t have access to the article, it’s just the idea to put a purse, wallet, cellphone or something else you won’t forget (or will quickly realize you are missing) in the back with your baby in a car seat. That way, in the unthinkable scenario that you forget to drop off your baby at daycare, you notice or realize quickly and prevent an even more unthinkable tragedy...

At the top of our stairs is about 3 feet of wood balusters that are the perfect width for small children to sneak through. I’m fine with my 4 year old squeezing through between the first two to sneak downstairs when the gate at the top of the stairs is closed, but my almost 2 year old has just started doing it and it terrifies me. Sometimes she tries going through the third or fourth space which means she can’t reach the step below her. She’s not going to stop trying, so I’m looking for a solution. Are there any netting options or something similar out there I could cover the balusters with? We can’t push something against it because then the kids will climb up and try to jump off (we learned that when we first moved in). I suppose I could leave the gate open, but I’m not quite comfortable with the 2 year old going up and down the stairs unsupervised and I need to be able to trap her upstairs if I’m showering.

My sister in law takes her 10 year old into the women's bathroom with her and has him use the stall there. She is a school psych, my brother is a police officer, so granted they have seen some crappy stuff. They claim that this prevent's him from being molested in the boys bathroom. Is this a common practice? Or are they way outside the norm?

We have a preschooler and a toddler and are struggling with our preschooler forgetting to close the baby gate, which puts our toddler at risk. I’m also open to a gate that isn’t the walk through style if necessary.

Any recommendations?

Reviews are overwhelming and I read one that mentioned their fisher price swing catching fire--which terrified me.

Hoping you all have some favs or advice for choosing the safest/best option for the baby...

I like this one, because it has a bassinet feature and allows you to connect your own music, etcetera--also, it has an AC adapter with it and multiple direction swing with detachable rocking features.

I like that this one has an AC Adapter and multiple directions/bouncer option:

I'm a checklist person...so I found a checklist of how to prepare for baby that broke things down by chunks of weeks, and adapted it to work for me and put it in a project management platform I use so I have the satisfaction of checking things off.

Anyway, it suggests babyproofing around 28 weeks pregnant. That seems awfully premature (especially considering babies don't move much when they're born!)

Did you babyproof before baby came? If so, when? Or did you wait until they started becoming mobile?

Looking for child proofing help.

Our baby monitor camera is mounted above the curtain rod with the cord extending down the wall and across to the adjoining wall where it plugs into an outlet behind the crib. The outlet is secured so my daughter can't remove the plug.
However I need a solution for securing the cord to the wall.

The kicker is that is has to be easily removable because the monitor gets taken down and put back up multiple times a month when my daughter goes to visit her grandparents. So i can't install anything that attached to the wall permanently or can't be easily replaced. Picture with arrows to cord and circle where it plugs in. Thanks in advance for your brilliant ideas!

Looking for opinions. I was in a very minor accident last night. I was alone, and was going about 5-10 mph, and barely hit another car's bumper as they were crossing an intersection. It was so minor that the other car didn't even pull over. I called to report the accident but never found the other driver, and they did not call the police so I don't have any way to even contact them.

There is enough damage to my vehicle that we are going to file a claim with insurance, and we hope that will cover the car seat replacement. But in the mean time, I am at home with two kids and I'm not sure if we can leave the house. DH is certain the seats are safe, but I am a rule follower and am a little worried about it.

Both of our car seat manuals say replace after any crash. But is this really necessary in all situations? Any car seat experts out there?

Our babysitter pointed out to us this weekend that our 4yo can open our "babyproofed" hall cabinet that contains medicine. LO went in the cabinet to get a bandaid (and fortunately not to eat medicine). Most is in childproof containers but some like Tums and random supplements are not. DH and I were surprised and disturbed by this so the next day we bought a few different locks and she can undo them all easily. Crap. Any suggestions for locks I can open but a 4yo can't? We have smallish side by side knobs on those cabinets and under the sink.

At what age do you stop proofing and let them be? Not that I think we're there, especially with LO2 at age 2.
