My 2 yr old girl (January bday) is in a 7, but I just got her summer sandals in an 8. She is tallish - not sure the exact height, but about 80th percentile. My 4.5 yr old is in an 11, and almost 6 yr old is a 13!

DD who turns 2 this week is currently in a size 6. I bought a bunch of size 7 summer shoes though hoping she'll fit into those in the next month or so. But I think it also varies brand to brand, and even in the way the shoe fits so I don't think a 9 is way out there.

I have an almost 2 yr old and she wears 7/8. Her feet are thick, so some of the really cute ones cut into the top of her feet. We like cat and jack for price point and replacement needs. Her sister grew at a similar pace, so I know the sizes will level out… but the shoes don’t last long.

@catgirl: Thank you! A shoe horn has crossed my mind; I'll need to look and see if we have one. Even if I'm the one who uses it, I think maybe it would guide her foot on the right path/help her keep it in the right shape.

@PinkElephant: My DD finds it easier to put boots and tight shoes on while she is standing. It seems to keep her foot in a better position. For most boots she can do it without help but for some shoes she uses a shoe horn with a long handle to keep the back of the shoe in position. (DH often has to use the same tool because of a back injury so she has always seen it in use.)

@meadow: Thank you! I'm totally not opposed to doing it for her; this positioning might do the trick. I was trying to brace her back against me so she had something to push against, and it just wasn't working. I've seen people do some funny things with tipping kids back into the trunk in their carseats (so their feet are in the air like a roller coaster, haha), so I may experiment with that , too

Totally out of left field....and doesnt help with self sufficiency.....but

Could she practice pointing her toes by lying on her back and pointing them to try to stretch her body long-like?

I'm thinking the way kids sit on the floor to put on shoes is kinda scrunched like, maybe shes just carrying that motion

So maybe short term if she can do this, you put her shoes on while lying down....then she will develop muscle memory to point when she does it?

Help! My five year old is AWFUL about putting on any shoes that don’t open up super wide (like Velcro sneakers or Mary Janes). She just can’t figure out how to point/wiggle her feet and be helpful when putting on boots, jazz shoes, etc. - it’s nearly impossible; she’ll literally curl her toes under and let her foot bend in half. Any tips on how to cue her/ teach her what to do?!

Definitely rain boots and extra layers of socks! We live in TX but I grew up in MI and we have family all up north. For our visits rain boots work great (but it also rains buckets here so they come in handy for that too). We had that big storm last winter with actual snow and almost a week below freezing and overall just went with lots of layers since no one has winter gear here unless they ski. If you have tight fitting style pjs those are great for layering under other pants and tops when going outside. You can also layer cheap mittens over cheap gloves, often come in a multipack. I ran the dryer a lot that week because everything got wet each time but better than buying stuff we can’t use regularly! I do think hats/earmuffs are worth it if outside play is happening.

We all wear bogs and love them, but I agree they would be pricey for just one trip. Dick's sporting goods has a similar style boot for $30ish, I think they are called the snowbound. They aren't quite as warm but with good socks they should work!

Our favorite kids (and adult) boots are bogs, but if you’re only going to use them for one trip to MO they might be more than you want to spend. Really if it’s around or just below freezing you can probably get by with thick socks and whatever rain boots they already have. If they don’t already have rain boots, anything waterproof that you can get from your favorite store should cover you when combined with a good pair of socks (ex smartwool, bombas, darn tough). Bonus points if the boots have handles so the kids can pull them on easily. My only other tip is to always put on mittens if you’re on the fence. Little hands get cold fast.

Have fun!

We booked tickets to visit DH's family in St. Louis for Christmas. It will be so nice to visit after over two years.

We're from coastal California so my kids aren't equipped with footwear to face cold, rain, and (fingers crossed) light snow.

What shoe/boot do you recommend? The kids are 8 and 6 and in size 3 and 2.
