I very rarely have to wake my kids up. They’re up at 6:30 most days. But when they do sleep in, you can be sure it’s a Monday…. I wish they’d do it on the weekends but I get it, Monday mornings are no fun!

This happens with my 7 year old...although not usually at 4am. That is ROUGH! On the weekends he has to hang out in his room until 7.

Ugh my DD is similar! On school days her alarm goes off at 6:50 and we then have to fight her to get up! But on the weekend or any vacation she tends to wake up at 6 or even earlier. On Easter she woke up at 5!

During the school week I usually have to wake up my 6 year old at 6:30/6:45 in order to get ready for school and be on time. 11 year old is usually up on his own between 6-6:30.

It’s spring break. They are going to bed mostly at their usual time, maybe staying up for an extra 30 minutes. What time did my 6 year old get up at today? 4am. Yesterday he was up at 5:30. Like seriously dude. You have a chance to sleep in as long as you want without me coming in and waking you up. Whyyyyyy 😫

/end rant.

My girls are 6, 4, and 2. We follow the same schedule year-round because they go to daycare and have to be there the same time every day because both parents work year-round. The 6 and 4 yr olds are in bed by 7:30, sleeping by 8. 2-yr old is in bed by 6:30/6:45, sleeping within minutes. Older two have to be up by 6:30am but are typically awake before then, sometimes as early as 5:45. We let the 2 year old sleep until shortly before we leave the house (7ish) and she is almost always still sleeping. She sometimes sleeps til 8 on weekends. 4-yr old and 2-yr old still nap, but only about 1-1.5 hours and both seem ready to drop the nap soon. The only time we deviate from this schedule is camping, but even then only about 30-60 min later than usual.

DS 1 is 9 and we just changed his bedtime to 8:30. He is usually up by 7.

DS2 is four next month and goes to bed at 7. He is up by 6 like clockwork. He usually naps a couple times a week but this doesn’t affect bedtime.

DS3 is 3 months and has been going to bed around 8.

Even though I’m home I’m pretty strict for bedtimes. The big kids get to stay up late sometimes if we have company or somewhere to go to. But if we are at home then I need them in bed.

My kids are 9 and 7. During the school year we aim for in bed by 8:30. We're trying to do in bed by 9 this summer. They're in summer camps 8/9ish to 4/5ish as childcare and then they swim or play with neighbors until I drag them home so they need their rest.

They're usually up by 6:30 regardless of bedtime but I know they're tired because lately they've been sleeping until 7:30 - something I've dreamed of for a long time.

My boys are 5 and 10. During the school year we aim to be in bed and reading by 7:30, asleep by 8. Baseball season makes that a little tough to hit, usually they are asleep by 9.

During the summer we don't really have a set bedtime. Usually it's whenever I feel like sending them to bed! Sometimes it's 7:30, sometimes it is 9.

My youngest will sleep later if he goes to bed later. My oldest has an internal alarm clock for 6:30. Doesn't matter what time he went to bed. If we have a late night one night, I do try to get them to bed at a reasonable hour the next night.

@Chuckles: our schedule is pretty consistent—bed time 7:30, usually asleep 8:00-8:30, up 6:30-7:00, nap 12:30 - 2:00/2:30. The next time we have a vacation week we’re going to try dialing nap back to 1:00-2:00 and see how it goes. She’s skipped nap a couple of times recently and that is not a good situation for anyone, but she seems ready for a little less sleep based on how hard bedtime has been recently. I will say we’re lucky in that no matter how sleepy she is as soon as she’s awake she wants to see what everyone in the house is doing, so we don’t have trouble getting her out of bed.

@Chuckles: My 3 year old still takes a pretty solid nap almost every day too. In your case it really sounds like she needs the nap if she's that hard to wake up from one... You could try making naptime earlier if it's messing with her bedtime though. Or make sure she gets some outdoor time before bed to get all the wiggles out?

My kid has always been high sleep needs though, so we've made it a priority. She's 3 and she sleeps for 12 hours at night plus a 2 hour nap most days....

@karenbme: not to thread jack, but when/ how long does your DD nap? During the school year, DD goes to daycare daily where they have to allow 2 hours for naps. And we leave the house by 7:30, so having her sleep in when she didn't nap became a problem

But for the summer she is only going 2 days a week. The problem is that once she falls asleep for nap, she's really hard to wake up. I'd love to limit her nap to an hour, but then we're spending like 30-45 minutes trying to get a tired and crabby toddler to leave her crib.

DD is 7. During the school year her bedtime is 8. As in we leave the room between 7:50-8 and she is normally out within minutes. and she wakes up between 6:30-6:50 (she sets her alarm for 6:50 but wakes up before it goes off at least half of the week).

In the summer her bedtime doesn't technically change but I am more open to going to events that get us home late - fireworks, baseball games, big cookouts, etc. So I'd say once or twice a week we are out until 9:30/10 and she goes straight to bed, but the rest of the week she is still normally asleep by 8/8:15. During the school year we do very, very few things that will keep her up past her normal bedtime.

My almost 4.5 year old goes to bed at 7:30, but often doesn’t fall asleep until 8. Wake up is between 7:30 and 8. She often sleeps later if we push her to stay up later, but definitely not always, and sometimes the opposite. She hasn’t napped in years.

We’re pretty strict with our 2.5yo’s 7:30 bedtime. She’s getting ready to shorten her naps so a lot of the time she whines through the monitor about being stuck in her crib until 8:30 or so. It might be different if one of us stayed home, but we need to be out the door by 8 for work/daycare so it is what it is.

My just turned 9 year old has lights out between 8:30 and 9 both during the school year and in the summer because he wakes up around 6:30 daily.

My 2.5 year old is rough. When she naps, which is most days, she often sleeps hard and for 2 hours. Then she's awake until like 9:30 :bummed: She wakes up between 7 and 8 usually. If she doesn't nap for more than a couple days in a row, she's a mess and sleeps really late, so I think she still needs to nap, but it's driving me crazy. Update: it's now 10pm and she just announced from her crib, "I'm the tooth fairy and tooth fairies don't sleep, so I don't need to sleep anymore." Today she napped from 1:30-3:30, but refused to get out of her crib until 4. She also randomly pooped at like 9:45, which doesn't usually happen, so that's part of it tonight. :crying:

We generally don't let our kids sleep in our bed. If someone is sick then one of us will sleep with them in their room so that way the other person can get some sleep. My four year old has started getting in the habit of waking us up in the middle of the night but he doesn't ask to sleep with us, he usually just wants us to tuck him back in. But. he's pretty good at realizing situations he can take advantage of. It started off as him coming in because he had a bad dream every once in awhile, then it turned into every night, then a couple of times a night, then it was him skipping into our room at 3am shouting "I HAD A DREAM ABOUT PAW PATROL." At that point DH started dealing with him aka doesn't give him the kisses and the cuddles that I do. Once he realized he wasn't getting my attention he started staying in bed most nights.

Definitely a parenting style difference. My kids (almost 6 and 9) still come into our room (the 6 yo about 50% of time and the 9 year old maybe 20%). They won't still be doing in in high school I'm guessing, so for now I just go with it because I get more sleep with them there than engaging in a battle of wills to get them back in their own rooms.

We obviously prefer that our kids sleep in their own rooms but if they need us in the night it is what it is. My oldest who is now 9 hasn’t come to our room in the night in a long time but if he did we would welcome him. Our 3.5 year old climbs into our bed around 4:30 most mornings and sleeps until the morning. Sometimes he will call or come get us because he needs his blankets back on.

I think part of being a parent is being there at night too. If it gets kind of crazy like calling for no reason then I think it is good to have an age appropriate talk and some sort of incentive to stay in bed.

I agree with others that it’s a parenting style choice. That’s not our personal parenting style. Haha. I wouldn’t do that personally. We also have a six and a half year old who has had sleep issues since birth. There are several diagnoses that have physical and neurological explanations, but even in those circumstances (like ours) sleep is very much a behavior thing too. Sleep association is a big one. What’s going on in his room when he falls asleep? Is he in there alone or is a parent with him? Does the lighting look the same or different at sleep onset than it does when he has his wakeup in the middle of the night? Any differences and getting curious about those is helpful too! There are sleep psychologists that can help with tougher cases but obviously there are so many varying degrees of severity. Basically if the family is able to function it’s a win. :)

My 5yo frequently wakes in the middle of the night and asks for me to fix her blankets. Both kids rarely wake us up otherwise now that they're older (lo1 is turning 8 soon), and we joke that they shouldn't bother us unless there is blood or fire lol-- but we'd definitely want them to come to us if they're distressed. Sometimes they'll have a bad nightmare or something and just need a hug. But we're in and out of their room quickly (or they're in and out of ours).

DD is 7. Our upstairs has a really bizarre layout - our bedroom is part of an addition and DD’s room is from the original house. We can’t easily hear her, especially with her sound machine, so we still have an audio monitor set up. She would be welcome to come get us if she needed something but she doesn’t like dealing with the hallways and stairs. So normally she will say something over the monitor.
That said, we don’t let her sleep in our room. If something is wrong one of us will go to her. Asses what her needs are and handle it. Sometimes that means a quick cuddle, a glass of water, or fixing covers but sometimes it means one of us stays with her for a bit.
I want her to always feel comfortable getting us or asking us to come to her if she needs us. But we also talk a lot about how everyone in the house needs sleep to have good days. We make sure to do lots of cuddles throughout the day and before bedtime. We discuss ways she can handle small issues on her own.
