DD is 6 mo. Just started oatmeal (very thinned out with breastmilk).

Sleeps been off ever since - short naps, more wake periods at night (she was averaging 1 before this, sometimes none). Her tummy is gurgling and she seems uncomfortable. Stools are dark and some diarrhea.

Is this normal stuff? Older DD took to solids like a champ, no issues that I remember.I keep thinking it's probably her system adjusting to a new food.

I'm not sure what to do to help her feel better! I've been giving tummy rubs and helping her kick her legs so she's getting things moving. I have offered gas drops a few times. She seems most comfortable when upright.

Should I be avoiding oatmeal and moving on to a puree?

Help a tired mama out!

Hello! My 8 month old had started eating more solids so naturally his poop is changing.

Before solids he would always poop at least once a day. He just recently went 4 days without a poop and I got a bit worried, even though I read it was normal.

When he finally went, the consistency was kind of like really thick peanut butter. Is that normal or should it be softer? I know pebbles are bad, just not sure what is normal.

Thanks!

This is maybe a silly question, but I'm an FTM. How do you clean your child up after feeding them solid food? A washcloth with just water? Do I use soap on the hands?

DS just turned 6 months a week ago, and we've attempted purees 4 times since then, with the same result every time. We give him a bit of puree on a spoon, he is happy / likes the taste / takes more. But when he finally swallows whatever is in his mouth, he immediately projectile vomits up everything that was in his stomach, even if his last bottle was hours earlier.

At first I thought maybe it was a gag reflex still being too far forward in his mouth type of thing, but watching him more closely the last couple of times it really seems to be tied to the swallow specifically. He's formula fed if that helps, so used to swallowing from a bottle just fine.

Have you had a similar experience? Did your child just grow out of it or is there something we should be doing to help?

Hey guys,

I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. At my LO’s 15m check up, my LO dropped a percentile so now we have to go back in a month for a weight check. I feel like I’m trying so hard everyday to get calories into my LO. He already has texture issues to begin with so won’t eat A LOT of foods. And lately the last few days, the foods he does eat he’s not caring for. It’s gotten to the point that I have to carry him around or put him in the tub to distract him enough to eat a purée. I know I shouldn’t do this, but I don’t want him to lose weight bc he’s small to begin with. I would probably do things differently if he wasn’t on the lower end of the growth chart. He could care less about eating. I’ve tried everything. I made him a smoothie this morning with his breakfast and all he ate were the blueberries on the tray and a couple sips of the smoothie. I feel like nothing is working and I don’t want his development to be effected. He could go all day without eating and just wants to play. I’m at a loss. Please help or share encouraging stories!

Hi all.

I’ve posted about this before. Since my last post, LO at least eats more now but always wants the same things and doesn’t want anything with texture (no meats, no rice, no pasta, no soft veggies) etc. So I feel like he eats the same thing all the time. I did speak to a professional about this and apparently it’s an issue with textures. So I was told to give him a new food he doesn’t want and let him do sensory play with it and it could take up to 30x before he eats it. Has anyone else had this issue or have any other suggestions? Things he always eats are strawberries, blueberries, banana, baby cookies, grilled cheese, toast with butter/PB or cream cheese, any crunchy kind of cracker or cookie, yogurt, purees (stage 2 six months) and baby granola bars. Oh and he loves French fries, but we only give him a couple if we’re out eating.

LO is around 6.5 months and we've been doing solids once per day for a couple of weeks. He has zero interest in finger foods so far - I offer a bit at every meal and he just makes a face and spits them out - but *loves* purees of fruits and veggies.

Daycare says LO has a growing appetite and is often no longer satisfied with his 3 5 oz bottles. They recommended sending solids with him for lunch, as he also gets envious sometimes when he sees the other babies eating (he's the youngest in his class and the only one not eating solids for lunch). I agree that he would probably enjoy solids more than extra milk in his bottles. But when I googled there's so much stuff of the "breast is best" flavor, warning against replacing milk with solids too quickly. I'm just curious what others have done in practice. Follow the baby's lead and give them solids whenever/to the extent they're interested, or take a more gradual approach?

Hi all,

My LO is 9mo. Doctor asked about him eating table food. He’ll eat pieces of banana, bread and puffs. Anything else I put on his tray he usually plays with. Doctor said no milk before meals and if he doesn’t eat, don’t offer anything (not milk either) until the next meal. I don’t know what to do because I didn’t nurse him this morning and he didn’t eat much of what I offered. He was acting hungry after and like he wanted to nurse so I didn’t follow the advice and fed him. Plus my LO is only 16.7 so I don’t want to starve him. He said breastfed babies usually have this issue because they prefer to nurse than eat table food. It’s stressing me out :(

He also told me to night wean but I don’t know if I’m going to. He goes back to sleep so easy if I feed him and I don’t want him losing weight.

Hi all,
I posted about something similar about a month ago. Still struggling. It’s to the point now that my 10mo will only eat bread, toast with peanut butter, grilled cheese, waffles, yogurt, puffs, Cheerios and sometimes a ripe pear.

He refuses his cereal now, refuses any vegetable puree but will eat fruit purees. He used to eat vegetable purees. I noticed he likes baby food jar food more and there’s a higher chance of him eating that than a homemade vegetable purée.

Here’s everything I’ve offered as ginger foods that I can remember right now and he’s refused:
Pasta (just sat in his mouth and didn’t chew it)
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Raspberries
Hard boiled egg
Scrambled eggs
No longer eats cereal
Peas
Soft carrots
Rice
Sweet potato fries

I’m worried about his iron intake too since he refuses everything that has iron in it too. I’m running out of ideas on what to give him. I’ve tried adding cinnamon to things. I don’t know how long this will go on? It’s been at least well over a month. I’ve tried the mesh feeder and I’ve tried dipping bread in things like avocado and vegetables purees. He knows and then won’t eat it usually.

Hi all,

My LO is 9 mo and he was taking purees well before but as of late, he’s not taking purees as well and barely eats any of the table food I give him. The only table food I can guarantee he will eat is bread and Cheerios or any kind of baby snacks (mums, puffs, etc). Anything else he just plays with and doesn’t try to eat it. I make his purees but buy the jars just for meat. I noticed that he’ll eat the jars more easily than anything I make lately... but it’s hard to even get him to eat the first spoonful and then once he figures out he likes it he’ll keep eating it... so I’m thinking maybe I should just try getting all jar food?!?! I don’t know! He’s also still on stage 2 (6m) because he rejects stage 3.

I keep offering table food over and over but nothing and it sucks that he’s even rejecting purees more often too. I’ve been making him smoothies to try and make up for his lack of eating.

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

jennlin821 on "Plant Based Toddler Food?"

So my husband and I eat a mostly plant-based diet.
We also batch cook, eating the same thing all week.
We barely eat anything processed, everything is made from scratch on sundays for the week.

So my question is, what do you other plant-based, vegetarian, or vegan mama's feed your toddlers? DD is 13 mo, and now loves to eat all by herself. No spoon feeding allowed! But I'm stuck on proteins and quick fix ideas.

I personally eat eggs, quinoa, and hemp seeds for the majority of my protein. But she can't grab rice or quinoa and she already eats eggs for breakfast every day!

I haven't tried giving her beans yet - I'm afraid of causing gas and tummy upset. But I'm sure this will become a diet staple.
DH & I will eat Morningstar farms stuff (breakfast sausage and burger patties) occasionally, when we don't have time to cook. But there is so much soy in these products, I'm not sure I should be giving them to DD.

She does get a full balanced lunch at daycare (meat/cheese protein, fruit & veggie), so this is more about weekends and dinners.

So I guess this really boils down to two questions:
1)What plant-based/vegetarian/vegan protein do you feed your young toddlers?

)What quick plant-based/vegetarian/vegan processed foods do you feed your young toddlers? (and i'll take other ideas as well!)

Hi everyone,
My LO is 4mo. His pediatrician recommended starting rice cereal in two weeks, followed by barley followed by oats (trying each new thing after 2 days). He then said to start vegetables (squash, sweet potatoes, apples then pears). He said to give him baby food before breastfeeding so he doesn’t fill up on milk. No meats, eggs or fish until 6 months and said he should be having three meals a day by 6m.

Does this all sound normal?

Let's preface this with the fact that I love my daycare, they are undoubtedly the kindest, most flexible and persevering ladies ever to deal with my kids.

My 4.5 mo DD has been there two weeks. But she still absolutely refuses to drink from a bottle.

Every day I pump at work and then wait for the text "She will not eat. Please come feed her." I only work 8 minutes away, so we make it work. We've tried different bottles, different nipples, different people feeding her, different temperatures, different sippy cups, even spoons and straws. Nothing but the boob will do.

My lovely daycare ladies suggested trying pureed food. She's 4.5 months, so I said I'll send cereal. I mean, you're supposed to wait till 6 months, right?

Today I was waiting for the typical cry for help when I got a picture of her eating some gerber food with a spoon. She ate it! Buuuuuuut, should she?

TLDR: Is it bad that my bottle-hating 4.5 mo is being fed purees at daycare instead of me driving from work to feed her every day?

DD is 9 months old, and has been on solids for about three months. In the last six weeks, she's been getting really excited about food and is now eating three "meals" each day, consisting mainly of purées and yogurt, but also small nibbles of what we are eating when appropriate. The problem? Over the last week or two, she has started pooping excessively. Every time she has food or breastmilk, she has a poopy diaper shortly after. We are getting a whole rainbow of colors and consistencies (ew, I know, sorry!) which makes me think it's not a tummy bug. She didn't show any signs of food intolerances previously, and teething could definitely be a factor. She's getting a pretty bad diaper rash, even though I change her quickly each time.

Anyone else's LO go from 1-3 poops a day to upwards of 6?! 8?! I don't even know?! I suspect she was eating a lot more than usual with her grandparents last week when this started (I was traveling), but I have had her back with me since Friday, and the poop thing is ongoing. Just trying to gauge if this is normal or if a trip to her doctor seems to be in order. I don't remember my other kids pooping this much, but feel like some if my friends' kids may have gone through stages like this and they were just temporary...?!

More FTM questions for you wise ladies!

LO is 8 months and so far has shown very little/no interest in self-feeding, but loves eating. He'll play with food but doesn't attempt to put it into his own mouth and if I help guide him, he mostly gets angry and just wants me to do it for him.

I've started giving him finger foods but because he doesn't want/know how to feed himself, he'll just eat right out of my hand. He seems to love anything I give him, which is great.

-Is it okay to be feeding him finger foods like this, when he can't feed them to himself? Will he eventually just pick something up and put it in his mouth?

-How do I know how much to give him per meal? I've been feeding solids 3 times a day. Should I be giving snacks in between too? With purees, I found it easy to know how much to give and know if he had enough, but with the little bits of food, I'm having trouble telling if it's enough or if I should be giving more.

-Should I still be giving purees in addition to the finger foods?

-Any recommendations for things to give him? Is it okay to just be giving one food at a time (for instance, last night for "dinner" he had pieces of broccoli), or should I be giving a protein/veg/fruit at every meal? I'm confused between the "food before 1 is just for fun" and worrying if he's getting the right balance/enough food!

THANK YOU!!

LO has been loving purees and mushy stuff, but shows no interest in actually putting food into his own mouth. Curious when your littles started on finger foods and feeding themselves? I've tried just putting stuff in front of him like bananas or grated cheese, but he just mushes everything up in his hands and throws it on the ground! We started solids one month ago at 6 months.

My baby just turned 8 months and it's been difficult to get him to eat, he just doesn't seem excited about food. We started at 6 months and give him baby food puree "lunch" and "dinner" around 11am and 6pm, about an hour before his two biggest bottles of the day, and he *sometimes* will eat, most often we'll get a few decent bites in and then he starts pursing his mouth closed and making "oooooh!" noises at us, and then gets fussy if we keep trying longer than 10 minutes or so (he is *not* usually fussy). When we try and play games to get him to open up he'll smile with his mouth shut like he's got our number. We've tried giving him tastes of what we eat, tried alternate times for feeding, tried feeding him out of his high chair, tried putting tiny bits of food on his tray so he can feed himself, no dice. So far he sort of likes fruits like apples, pears, prunes; tolerates veggie/fruit mixes and bits of bread/pasta, and hates veggies, eggs, yogurt. He has his two bottom teeth and that's it; it's possible he's teething again now but who knows.

What do yall think? Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is the answer just keep trying?

My DS just turned 10 months old a few days ago and he eats zero solids. He will not eat oatmeal, applesauce, puffs, etc. NOTHING. Any food that we do get into his mouth he acts like he is gagging and pushes it right out. The only food that he will even put in his mouth is a chunk of cantaloupe but if a tiny sliver breaks off he immediately starts gagging until he can get it out of his mouth.

We brought this up with his pediatrician at his 9 month check up and he did not seem alarmed and didn't give any advice either. We are thinking we will make an appointment to discuss this again since it has been a whole month with zero improvement.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have any advice on how to get him to accept foods? I am hesitant to even try more food because he does not even want to open his mouth and seals his lips shut when we try to feed him. I don't want to force him to eat. He does not even like it when we just put a taste of something on our finger and touch it to his tongue.

He is EBF and takes bottles of pumped milk just fine if that matters.

Hi ladies. LO is 4.5 months and I'm starting to think about solids which I plan to start around 6 months. Would love to hear any tips or tricks you have and any advice for how to make baby food and introduce it.
-I like the idea of making my own food, but I will say I HATE cooking and want to make feeding LO as simple as possible! How do I do this?
-I have a magic bullet, but no food processor... can I just use the bullet? Any other tools that are musts?
-Purees vs baby-led-weaning... thoughts?

Thanks!

Has anyone's LO been "diagnosed" with a sensitive gag reflex? When I google it seems fairly common, but my Ped who's been in practice for 30yrs. Doesn't seem co corned about it. Here's the backstory, DS is now 14.5 months and is just now being able to handle non puréed foods. He's literally been on stage 2 food for the past 7months. Anytime I would give him anything with the slightest bit of texture he would gag repeatedly and occasional throw up. Finally about 2 weeks ago his gagging started to lessen significantly, and since then we've been introducing more and more texture. The problem now is that he knows that he has to work at eating textured food, instead of just instantly swallowing it, and so he throws a fit and refuses to eat untill I cave and give him the purée he prefers. I've held out before and it was 3pm before he ate anything that entire day. He screamed and cried because he was obviously hungry but would not open his mouth for anything, until he saw the container that he knows the food he likes is in. Obviously I've already screwed up by caving, but baby screaming makes me crazy! Literally like I want to peel my skin off, takes me back to his newborn days where he screamed 12 hours a day. I'm at a total loss here, and nobody I know has dealt with this so I have nobody to get advice from. Please help!

This sounds silly but.......what do you do about feeding babies out of the house? We have the Fisher price booster seats so that in theory we could feed the babies when we visit family, etc. But my twins are....uh......kind of messy!!! Besides being messy themselves they typically thrown some of their meal on the ground. I am 100% comfortable doing this at my parents when we visit but have avoided feeding them out other places. However I think we are at the point where they NEED to eat three meals.

What do you do/did you do when out and feeding finger foods?

My twins are 8 months and we are 2 months into the swing of BLW. In addition to eating solids at school I try to "dinner" with them each night. I knew going into it that BLW would be a messy endeavor....but I am having trouble keeping up with the mess and am hoping for some tips of the trade from the HB community!!

Any tips on how to manage the mess? I feel like I need to mop nightly - which also seems absurd and unrealistic. The kids are setup on fisher price boosters on top of our dining room (wooden) chairs and we have wood floors. I've noticed that the chairs are taking a beating from either food not getting perfectly cleaned off or the use of wet wipes/too wet paper towels? I try to do a quick wipe on the floor before I take the kids out (DD likes to crawl back over to that zone and investigate if any food was leftover - haha!)

I know that the throwing food on the ground will eventually calm down -- but the end is nowhere in sight as of yet.

Advice? Tips of the trade? I feel silly writing this - but have this gut feeling there is something I am missing and HB is going to open my eyes :)

TIA!

We started DD on oatmeal cereal and purees at 4 months, and now that she is 6 months have increased solids to twice daily. She gets BM supplemented with formula. My question is how much food and breast milk/formula did your LOs get before 1 year? What kind of schedule are they on? Did you give milk first, then solid? Did you space them out? Did you offer water with solids or some breast milk or formula? I fed her formula then did some of her purees for dinner and I'm thinking I over fed her because she threw up like I have never seen before. I'm now questioning myself now. Thanks!

When you introduced solids, what was your game plan?

I still feel like I am winging it.

LO is almost 6 months. He is on his 3rd First Foods veggie that we chunk up with oatmeal or barley cereal twice a day. He gets plain oatmeal or cereal in the morning. He is drinking 20-24 oz of formula a day. He feeds himself from his bottle pretty well.

DH doesn't want to rush introducing fruits, so after the initial round of giving him one veggie for a few days I figure I would mix it up each feeding. For store bought puréed First Veggies I can only find peas, squash, string beans, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Are there others you have come across?

LO is so interested in what we eat now and I am tempted to try BLW although DH is most comfortable with the purées for safety reasons. Did you BLW with sticky oatmeal/cereal? Is it confusing to babies to spoon feed and also BLW?

I read 6-7 months is a good time to introduce a sippy cup during at least one meal. I also read once you begin solids you should give your LO a little bit of water. Did any of you do that?

Today Grandma and Grandpa fed LO 1/2 a baby food jar at "breakfast" and then the other 1/2 at "lunch," served straight from the jar both times and refrigerated in between. This is the second time they've done that despite me asking them nonchalantly to throw out any leftover food, bc that's what all the food safety guidelines for babies say to do.

Is this one of those hard-and-fast rules you hold to, or a more forgiving guideline that you ignore sometimes? Like, I'm know you're SUPPOSED to wash pump parts after every use, and not re-serve partially fed breastmilk, but most of us have said here on the boards that we do it anyway.

Basically, I'm wondering whether or not this is an important enough rule to bring up again. I want to let the little things slide, but I don't know if it's a little thing since everything says to throw it away and not save it?

They care for LO very day, so this situation will come up often enough.

LO is 8 months old. He eats puffs like a champ (cut in half), so I decided to boil some sweet potatoes and cut/mash them up for him to eat at lunch. He usually has purees, and he has been handling the chunky purees really well.

Well, he took a tiny piece of mushy sweet potato in his mouth and gagged... then threw up half of his lunch bottle. Ugh. This happened twice.

Is there something I should be doing differently? Or should I just wait to try again when he's older? I was so surprised because he gums the puffs and swallows them without any issues!

We've been giving M almond yogurt (Almond Dream) and yesterday I decided to take a look at the sugar content. It's ridiculous! 14g!

So I asked my husband to check the other brands at the store. He said they were worse including coconut milk yogurt.

Ugh. What brand yogurt (non dairy will be great) do you give LO and how much sugar is in it?
