Help be my brain!

DS is 9 months, drinks expressed breastmilk at daycare, 4 ounces every 2 hours, total of 16 ounces. As I wean from the pump, I want to start him on formula (have somewhat of a stash), but am confused about amount of formula to send.

I would like to attempt to give him a straight up formula bottle, no mixing with breastmilk. BUT I know that babies who have formula are drinking much bigger bottles much less frequently (in general). So if I want to replace one of his 4 oz breastmilk bottles, where do I start? Send a 5 ounce formula bottle? Would love to hear your experiences.

I don't think this should be this hard, but I'm pandemic'd out and in busy season at work. Can't think! Thank you!

We decided to combination feed this time around with our third. I’m on medications for anxiety and depression and also just wanted the extra help of other people being able to feed her. Well, she’s 2 1/2 months now and absolutely REFUSES the breast. I don’t want to wean!! I don’t want to pump 24/7!! What do I do? Any advice is so greatly appreciated.

Has anyone successfully done this? Like 50/50? Based on my previous pp experienced (one pumping a little while and the other trying to dry up but taking awhile to do so) I don't foresee having a super fragile supply but not sure.

Any advice for starting out? I think I would even be ok pumping rather than nursing if it were only 50/50 anyway, but it is less convenient.

Just trying to decide if this can be done without too much stress or if I should just commit to one or the other.

I'm about 10 weeks away from my due date with LO 2, and I'm thinking about feeding. LO 1 was EBF, but not without a ton of work and time spent on the pump, including mornings and post bedtime once I was back at work to make up what I wasn't pumping at work.

In thinking about feeding this baby, I'm not sure I want to do all that, nor will I necessarily have the time with another child.

So, looking for some ideas on how to supplement and still keep up my supply. I'd like to be able to nurse for 2 years like I did with my daughter, so I'm wondering about when to introduce a formula bottle, do i pump to make up for it, at least in the early days, how much can you supplement without impacting supply too much, etc., and anything else that might be important to know!

I'm going to switch from EBF to combination feeding when my baby is ten months old. She will be getting formula while I am at work, but I would like to continue nursing on weekends. Has anyone had experience with this? Will my supply still be there on weekends if I'm not pumping on weekdays?

My EBF 8 month old had a stomach virus on Friday night and then I got it yesterday. It has killed my supply! I had to dip into my milk for daycare this week and barely had enough for her bottles today.

I tried giving her frozen milk last night and she wouldn't take it (the lipase thing, I presume). So, I made up a bottle of a sample can of formula that I had here. She gagged and refused that as well.

I know my supply should pick back up one I get back to eating and drinking normally, but any tips on how to manage in the short-term?

I asked daycare to only give 2 bottles today (if possible) and fill her up with solids to give me at least one bottle for tomorrow. I have a feeling that I'm not going to get enough for her though.

Has anyone had luck going cold turkey with supplementing (vs. mixing w/ breastmilk and increasing)? Any suggested formulas that may taste most like breastmilk?

Looking for some advice/guidance on combo feeding. DS2 is 2.5 weeks old and not gaining enough weight so our pedi wants us to supplement. I am fine with using formula as I have a 2 year old so I don't really have the time to BF/pump/bottle feed every feeding.

I am mentally struggling with his lack of weight gain because I struggled to BF DS1 and mentally tortured myself over it. I promised myself I wouldn't do that this time. However, didn't expect to run into the weight gain issue so soon. My first LO struggled with weight gain, and we supplemented him with formula, but not until he was 8 weeks old. All that to say, I am considering combo feeding to take a little bit of the stress/pressure off of myself, while still giving him the benefits of breastmilk. He is nursing pretty well, and has a decent latch despite being a sleepy nurser. He nurses regularly, normally every 2-3 hours and seems full/content after eating, but only gained 1oz in a week. We go for another weight check tomorrow, but I feel like I need to figure this out and make sure he is getting enough.

Trying to figure out if I need to change anything in DD's feeding/nursing schedule and could use some advice! I'm not sure if I"m just overthinking this or if there is really an issue.

I have noticed that when I pump to replace a feeding, I am only getting about 3.5-3.75oz. That doesn't seem like enough (she nurses about 5x a day, and 1x overnight). SO that makes me think I have a supply issue, and combined with her slow weight gain, that I need to supplement.

However, she never seems unsatisfied after nursing. She is meeting/exceeding all developmental milestones. The only thing that has made me nervous is seeing how much I pump, but maybe that's not a good indicator?

So I am not sure if it's worth it to try to supplement or maybe just bump up her solids intake to 3x a day. Any thoughts, especially from people with similar smaller babies/babies who were not big eaters!

ETA I should add that she has slowly been falling in percentiles--she was 34th at 4 months, 23rd at 6 months and 19th at 7 months. My son followed a similar pattern though, and is just a tall skinny kid. DD is not really that tall though (around 30somthing for height, tho that has been consistent-ish).

There are so many brands out there, I am overwhelmed! When we supplemented DS I used whatever samples we had on hand - he wasn't fussy. DD seems to have a bit of a reaction to dairy (not a true intolerance) so not sure if I should do a soy formula or one of the sensitive ones. Any advice appreciated! She is almost 5 months and after back to work and the return of my period, the freezer stash is dwindling quickly!

I have EBF my DD for 9.5 months so far, but earlier this week I got hit with a really bad stomach flu, and my supply has completely tanked. I work 3 days a week, and when I pump at work I used to get 3.5-4 oz, but now yesterday I got 1.5 and this morning I think I got 2 if I'm lucky at each session.

I'm sad that I may need to supplement, but I'm okay with it. I'm proud that I made it this long!! I'm still trying to really up my fluids and I'm taking Fenugreek supplements, along with trying to nurse LO a little more often. But it's hard because she doesn't seem to really want to truthfully.

I have a small stash in my freezer that I'm using to supplement at the babysitter but that will only last 2-3 more weeks if I continue pumping this way.

Anyways, long story short, I have no idea about formula.....would it matter what kind I get? I know in the newborn days babies had really sensitive bellies, but I totally think now at 9.5 months she could handle anything really.....Although I could be completely wrong! Suggestions? Brands?

I supplemented with DS1 because my milk was late coming in and he dropped a lot of weight in the first few days.

Supplemented also with DS2 because of severe jaundice.

After the first week or two, my supply was able to catch up to their needs and I was able to ebf with both boys.

So my period began again at 4 months post partum. I've noticed a significant drop in breastmilk supply since that time - particularly when I'm pumping. I have to travel without baby in about a month and am quite concerned that I won't be able to build up enough of a stash between now and then. So, here we are at 6 months and I thought I'd give supplementing with formula a try. I gave him 2 oz of breastmilk and 1 ounce of formula (enfamil supplement) at 4pm. Since then(it's now 8pm... I breast fed around 6, as well), he's been gagging and spitting up way more than usual. Help! Do I just need to give him more time to adjust? Do I try another brand or type of formula? Not sure what to do from here...

I recently had surgery and between the surgery itself, not being able to get out of bed for several days, being away from my son and now a medication I need to be on for at least 3 more weeks my milk supply is basically gone.

I was pretty burnt out with pumping anyway so I've decided to just ride it out nursing morning and evening as long as it's sustainable.

I have several hundred oz of breast milk in the freezer that we are going through but it won't last until Ds is 12 months. He is almost 9 months now and I think the frozen milk will last probably until 10 months.

Should I go ahead and start 1-2 formula bottles a day or should I use up my frozen until it's gone and then use formula? Can you mix breast milk and formula together? When I transitioned my daughter to whole milk I started by mixing the bottles so she could get used to the taste. I'm not sure if formula is the same since I've never used it? Also, how the heck to I decide what kind to buy? He has no allergies or sensitivities so far. Help!

Before DD was born I thought I would breastfeed exclusively for 6mos-1yr. Here we are nearly two weeks in and I've already given her formula!
She had jaundice in the hospital and they suggested giving her formula to flush out all the bilirubin.
Now at home She wants to eat more then I can give her. She only cries when she's hungry, so I have relented and given her formula after she's sucked me dry. But I worry about my supply keeping up if I supplement. What should I do? If you supplement does your supply keep up?

Hello! DD is 3.5 months old and has always been an infrequent pooper. She goes every 4 days on average which her pediatrician has said is normal. And they're HUGE!

She is also hybrid fed due to low milk supply. She gets 10 ounces of formula per day. This morning she popped and there were two distinctly different kinds of poop in her diaper which is the first time that's ever happened! The yellow, liquid, seedy breastfed poop & a much thicker darker formula poop. Still mushy but very thick!

Anyway- has this happened to any of your babies? Seems weird to me that they weren't all one kind of poop but maybe this is common in hybrid fed babies? 💩💩💩

Does anyone have any experiences with fortifying their breastmilk? LO is 16 weeks and has been falling in the curves since she was born. She's in the 10th percentile for weight (98th for height...so a skinny mini!), and weighs 11.9 pounds. She was 8 pounds even at birth. We thought she'd settle into a curve by now, but no luck.

Dr. advised us that an option was to fortify her breastmilk bottles with powdered formula to bump them up to 24 calories/oz. We are only doing that for daycare bottles, so plan to do 4-5 4 oz bottles/day. I will continue that on weekends.

I guess I'd just like to hear from other parents that may have done this. Did it help? How soon did you see a jump in weight? If it didn't help, what were next steps? I've read up on KellyMom, but curious to hear real-life stories.

Thank you!!!

Sorry I post frequently on this board- I just feel a bit overwhelmed and none of my friends have dealt with this situation. :)

So, baby girl (13 weeks) is now transferring 2 oz at weighted feeds (!) which is huge progress from the first 8 weeks of no more than 1.25 at a feed. Since about 6 weeks, our regime has been to do 7-8 feedings a day with 3 bottles of 2 oz of formula offered after every other feeding. She had substantial gains with this set up for those 6 and 8 week check ups.

At check ins with the LC, she has gained 7 oz from weeks 8-10 and from weeks 10-12 she has gained 5 oz. I've had a difficult time waking her for an 8th feeding (this is usually after 830 pm) so we average 7 feedings most days. This means now on the low end she is only getting around 20-22 oz a day of BM and formula.

The LC things she looks good- she has always been in the 90+ percentile for length so she is long and skinny, but not gaunt. The LC has two charts that say 25 oz a day is good to aim for and another chart that says at her current weight, 32 oz is ideal. She was hesitant to encourage me to increase bottles due to concerns over bottle preference and said we could keep doing what we are doing.

I feel worried that she may not even be getting 25 oz a day. She is not fussy after feedings and seems happy... but I just feel concerned I am not giving her what she needs.

What would you do? Start supplementing after more feedings and not worry about the bottle preference issue? Increase current supplementing to 3 oz and keep them to every other feeding so she doesn't get a bottle 7x a day? Trust the LC that things are okay and leave it alone?

(BTW - The pediatrician (whom we don't see again until her 16 week check up) has historically wanted me to bump things up because of early weight gain issues. Since she had great gains at 6/8 weeks she didn't reschedule us to return until 4 months. I don't know if she would be as accepting of the weight gains lately or not.)

This is a follow up to my "how much?" thread :)

So far my 11-week old is not an amazing napper- only recently have we been able to lay her down for naps (yay!) but they are only 15-30 minutes in length.

Current "schedule" is eat (30-45 minutes), play (30-40 minutes, aiming for putting her down when she has been awake for 75 minutes give or take) and sleep (15-30 minutes), repeat. She has actually begun to wake up more at night recently, sleeping in about 4 hour stretches down from at least one 6 hour stretch she was doing for a couple weeks.

She nurses 7-9 times a day (gets 2 oz of formula 3-4 times a day)

Any thoughts? Could she be needing more to eat to hold her over? Her weight gain has been great with the additional 6-8 oz of formula a day but I am concerned that as she is growing that perhaps she needs more (my hope had been that she would be transferring breast milk better at this stage). Its been 2 weeks since her last weight check/weighted feed and we go back tomorrow. I'm thinking she is around 12 lbs based on weighing her with me at home. At 9 weeks she was 11 lbs 2 oz.

I've been tempted to rent a scale (to confirm how much she transfers from BF) but everyone, including my midwife, says I will drive myself crazy with it. I would like longer breaks between feedings and to see her nap longer but maybe that just isn't our normal - which I can be okay with as long as she is healthy and growing :)

Currently we supplement about 2-3 oz from a bottle. The born free slow flow bottles we've been using are getting easier for my almost 3 month old to suck down so I am switching to Comotomo... Should I go for 5 or 8 oz? I can't imagine ever giving her that much formula but I don't quite know how much babies take later on. My plan is to continue BFing and top off with formula as needed so I don't know if the 8 oz size is too big with this regime.

Hi all! I was thinking it might be nice to get some support and hear from other moms who are supplementing or have supplemented in addition to BFing. Anyone care to chime in?

LO's Age: 6 weeks on Fri

Reason for supplementing: low supply, likely due to insufficient glandular tissue

Are you pumping?: The dreaded question - I hate pumping! I get almost nothing out and I just don't have time. I will be WOH 1 day a week so I'll need to pump that day.

Work status?: WAH 4 days, WOH 1 day.

BFing how often?: LO feeds about 7-8 times a day. I always BF before giving him formula, then he often goes back to the breast for comfort. All of those extra little sessions don't seem to help my supply.

Taking any supplements?: I'm taking Lactation Boost from Honest Company and I recently started domperidone. I'm not sure if it's working yet.

How are you feeling?: I'm thrilled that LO seems to love BFing so much and that I can do it, but it makes me sad that I can't provide all he needs. He's taking 3-4 oz of formula at each feeding. I'm really hoping the domperidone helps.

We've had a good few days around here - I am continuing to supplement 1-3 oz after offering the breast for a good 30-45 minutes based on her transferring around 1 oz in weighted feeds. She is 7 weeks tomorrow. She has seemed content with this routine and put on some good weight finally- it has felt like a small victory with all the BF drama I've had in the past few weeks.

However, this afternoon at her 5:15pm feeding and then again after 7pm, she was really frantic at my breasts and pulled off really frustrated. I could manually express milk from both breasts which made me think she should be able to access it but she just seemed over it after 5-10 minutes both times I attempted nursing. I wasn't questioning my supply lately, but this has me a little concerned.

I feel like I am hydrated and have eaten pretty well today... I haven't taken my More Milk Plus in a few days, nor have I had lactation cookies which I had made a couple times per a friend's recipe (they were basically peanut butter, maple syrup, oats, and almonds... no brewer's yeast so I didn't really know if they were making a difference other than contributing to no more lbs coming off lately :P)

It has me a little worried that she is maybe preferring the bottle all of a sudden? This hasn't happened yet (I use slow flow Born Free). Could she just be having an off night? It is the witching hour time but she hasn't really done this before. She did seem more hungry today, eating closer to every 2 hours compared to 2.5/3 hrs- I wasn't sure if it was growth spurt related and maybe I just am not producing enough or my supply is just low today? Should I get a scale for home use? So many questions, I know... I just am hopeful to keep up our nursing relationship and got a little freaked out... we'll see how nursing goes later/tomorrow.

How much do you supplement (I have an almost 6 week old)? Do you still offer formula if your baby isn't acting hungry after nursing? My pediatrician told me I can't over feed her but would those of you who have done this longer than me agree?

Typically at weighted feeds she is only transferring a little over an ounce (she is a bit of a lazy eater), so I am offering her 2-3 oz at feedings where I can tell she isn't emptying a breast or is acting hungry after 30 minutes + of nursing. This has been happening at about 3-5 feedings a day.

I can't pump much (even with a hospital grade pump), which would definitely help me know what she is getting from me, so I guess my question is geared towards those who have experience nursing and supplementing. :)

Okay. I am through a third round of fighting off nursing related issues (plugged ducts, having fluid drained at the OBGYN, major swelling from her refusing one breast twice) at 5 weeks. Breastfeeding has continued to be THE issue for us.

Her weight gain has been so-so and I've been supplementing after some initial concern by the Pediatrician my supply was the issue (At her 2 week appt she had only gained 2.5 oz... nursing had worn me out before this appt and I felt like she was never content). Her ability to transfer is also questionable based on weighted feeds/observations made by lactation consultants/my midwife.

That said, I am trying to keep at this but it is really frustrating to wonder after every feeding how much she is getting and how much to top her off with. Some feedings (all last at least 30 min) she seems content with just breast milk while others she will pull off and cry no matter what I try position wise/compressing, etc. I am taking More Milk Plus, eating oatmeal, trying to stay hydrated...

On top of this, my body is not responding well to pumping. I have the Medela pump in style and then rented the hospital grade Symphony and between both have maybe pumped an ounce total.

I keep holding out that her inefficiency may be corrected as she develops but wonder if maybe I really am not able to feed her adequately even if that happens. It seems like she is frustrated with feeds as the day progresses, as if my supply maybe tanks late afternoon or in the evening sometimes. How do you really know if its a supply issue? I feel fullness in my breasts when she sleeps/goes slightly more between sessions, I can express milk manually most of the time (when I am checking to see if anything is coming out when she gets frustrated),

As far as supplementing, I am curious to know how much others "top off" with. I have mainly offered her 2 oz but this week she has seemed to want more, so I've upped it to 3, hoping she is at least getting an ounce from me during nursing (this is what she has transferred at the last 2 weighted feeds, the most being 1.25 ounces). I am nursing about 10 times a day and averaging 3-5 bottles a day just for reference.

I keep hoping breastfeeding will improve and the need to supplement will go away, but I know that this doesn't always work out and have come to terms with it- mostly. :)

DD is almost 4 months. We have been BF'ing and topping her off with formula when she needs it. Recently, she has been guzzling 4 to 6oz AFTER she nurses... Probably twice a day. I'm getting sad that I'm not going to make it 6 months with nursing. Anyone else have this happen? Or any tips?

Hi ladies,

FTM here. LO is 2 weeks old and we started supplementing b/c he lost over 10% of body weight while in the hospital. At 6 days we saw the pediatrician and were pleased that LO had gained 7oz in 2.5 days. We met with a LC because we wanted to start pulling back on supplementation. We went back to 20-30ml per feeding but at our next appointment (10 days), he had lost an ounce despite the supplementation. We saw the LC the next day who told us to up the supplementing to 2oz per feeding. At our appt, LO only got 1.5oz from BF (he falls asleep often and isn't transferring a ton) when he needs 3oz per feeding for optimal weight gain.

For now, I'm BF, supplementing (mainly formula, but with BM when I can pump enough), then pumping for 20 minutes. This takes about 1.5 hours each session and we're still not sure it's working. My goal was to EBF, but I'm open to supplementing, just not sure I can sustain all I'm doing now. Any advice, suggestions or guidance?

Thanks!!!

Tell me anything, and everything!

I think my one concern is does it mess up their stomachs/digestive system?

I'm just barely meeting DD's demands... She has a huge bottle preference and I just can't pump enough esp at night for her. And WOH too so I don't really have time to power pump, add another pump session, etc... So I'm doing some prep work in considering supplementing a bottle of formula a day (I'd still pump for the miss feeding of course).

If you supplemented did you mix some BM and some formula in one bottle, or did you keep them separate?

I can't decide if it would be easier to just do one full formula bottle a day or top up multiple bottles throughout the day.

Pls share experience! DD is 8 weeks and we are EBF (she did have some formula in the very beginning when I had BF troubles). My supply is on the low end and I haven't been able to pump much. In case my output can't make it for what she needs when I go back to work I want to see who does both and how you do it and what your supply is like.

Now I know there are many ways to increase supply but I want to be prepared just in case.

(Not sure if this should go under breastfeeding or supplementing...)

With LO1, it took a few days for my milk to come in and because i didn't supplement with formula, she was jaundiced and dehydrated, and we had to go back to the hospital. I'm determined not to have a repeat of this with LO2.

Any tips/advice as to what i should be doing this time around? Do i still get him to nurse and then give formula? Do i start pumping right away? When i had LO, i really knew nothing about breastfeeding, and only became knowledgeable on pumping and supplementing a few weeks later.
