We have done a few trips with our kids--but my favourite was Peru. We did the Machu Picchu thing, starting with a couple of days in the Sacred Valley with a driver to take us to the sites, which we were often the only people visiting. We took the train to Aguas Calientes, which was beautiful and made getting to the actual ruins really easy. Then we went to the jungle, and visited a lodge that was about 3 hours down river from the nearest town. The lodge had assigned a guide to us who took us to see all kinds of animals, to fish, we visited a small farm and got to try the most amazing foods, and just had the best ever time. It was magical. From there we went to Lima and spent time in the city before flying home. Amazing memories. Our kids were 5 and 7 when we went and it was wonderful. It was helpful that I also speak Spanish.

We have also been to Costa Rica--which was an amazing trip. We were with family, but spent a week there ahead of them and took surfing lessons. It was also a lot of fun and we all want to go back one day!

African Safari! It’ll be more fun before they kit the teenage years.

London. We went before kids and kept thinking what a great place it would be to take kids someday. Tower of London, London eye, double decker buses, British Museum, London bridge, Buckingham Palace, globe theatre,

I think Costa Rica would be super fun with kids. I went with my family, but I was in college. Have you considered Belize? And what about the Azores, off Portugal? It looks so beautiful and would be fun for an active family.

What kind of stuff are your kids into? I think that would help narrow it down - if they love animals somewhere like Costa Rica would be great, if they're into knights and dragons and stuff a castle tour of Scotland, if they're into soccer you could do my son's dream trip, England and see a premiership match.

We haven't really taken our kids anywhere cool but based on the places I've been to I'd love to take them back to the Czech Republic or Morocco (although I think for Morocco I'd wait until they're a bit older).

We did France and Scotland last summer when my kids were 2, 5 and 7 and had a great time in both places. Scotland was especially nice because the scenery was amazing and we lots of fun doing hikes and exploring the lakes.

We’ve done Portugal, Spain and Italy with kids as well and I’d really recommend Portugal and Italy especially. There are some amazing beaches in Portugal and it can be very inexpensive (compared to other locations) Both Italy and Portugal were also very family friendly. It’s great to visit places where kids are welcome.

We had an amazing time in Costa Rica pre-kids, and I could see the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area in particular being very kid friendly. The wildlife is everywhere, the beach is beautiful, and there are lots of great places to stay/things to do. Fully recommend, especially if your kids like animals. Near Manuel Antonio we saw sloths, monkeys and lots of other animals daily.

We took our two girls (6 and 9) to Paris and Greece this summer for a little over 2 weeks. It was the best trip and while they are slightly older than yours, I truly felt it was the perfect age to travel. No meltdowns, adaptable, understood the need for flexibility, and best of all, excited-they helped me plan the entire itinerary! We will be heading to Costa Rica this summer!

@ElbieKay: Iceland and Costa Rica are at the top of our list! My husband and I were thinking we want to do an adventure trip to Iceland, either when the kids are older or just us 2 so we can really go hard with the hiking etc.
@hitchhiker: I want to go to Copenhagen soooo bad!

We took our then-2.5yo to Iceland. It was a great trip and very child-friendly. The only thing is that there are some treacherous hikes (think walking along the top of a waterfall) so you either need to choose carefully or really trust your kids. Due to our son's age, we just kept him in the frame backpack for most of it.

The culture is very child-friendly, nearly everyone speaks English, it's a 5hr flight from NY, most of the activities are outdoors, and many of the smaller towns have indoor pools open to the public if you need some downtime.

It is not a cheap place to visit though! Food is very pricey.

We had a great time with our (then) 2 and 5 year old in Copenhagen a few years ago. Really fun to just bike around the city, and exploring different parks and playgrounds. We also did some day trips to museums etc. And Tivoli Gardens is great.

I live in Scottsdale, AZ and it's absolutely beautiful all winter long. We also have lots of resorts that are very family-friendly. Check out the Westin Kierland or the Fairmont Princess. Tons to do. The Fairmont Princess especially has an incredible Christmas-themed festival. You can also hike right here in Scottsdale if you're into that, or go horseback riding. We also have two zoos and two aquariums.

It’s in the same area as jess1483’s recommendation, but we had a great time here: https://arenasdelmar.com There is wildlife everywhere, including daily sloth sightings and a troop of capuchin monkeys that pass through the property every day around dusk, not to mention Manuel Antonio National Park, which had more wildlife than anywhere else I’ve visited.

@KT326: Don’t feel guilty! I’m sure your husband has things he does that are just for him, too. If you really want a couples getaway, is it possible one of your family members would visit/babysit for a night or two? My MIL is driving up from 3 hours away for DH and my anniversary this year so that we can go to a fancy restaurant/get a nice hotel room for a night.

@agold: I looked that place up, it definitely looks like a dream getaway! A little out of budget for now but someday!

@HappyBaker: a cruise sounds like a great idea! There are actually quite a few short ones that leave from SF.

@Chuckles: that sounds amazing. I wish I had traveled before getting married/having kids. DH and I have a trip to Italy on our bucket list.

@JJ2626: r@karenbme: That's what I'm looking for. Somewhere I can just relax, maybe get a massage, go for walks alone. I've been looking at Morro Bay and Monterey/Carmel.

I'm having a hard time not feeling guilty though! Every place I look at I think it would be a great vacation for me and DH. And while I would love to do a trip just the two of us, all of our family has moved out of the area and we lost all of our babysitters.

In my early/mid-20s I did lots of solo traveling mostly in Europe. But I’m east coast based so it was a quick flight. At this point I would love to go someplace quiet with soft bathrobes and fancy food where I could read a book and get a massage (and if I weren’t pregnant have a big glass of wine). No suggestions on locations near SF, but I’m sure it’s something you could find in Napa or somewhere in the PNW if you’re open to a short flight (the San Juan Islands are gorgeous and so peaceful).

Before kids, I went to Paris by myself (I'm near Chicago). I think I went for a whole week. It was awesome, and I loved being able to do whatever I wanted and be on my own schedule. And I think I'd appreciate that 1000 times more now that I have kids. But I did end up spending a boatload of money calling DH (then just long- term boyfriend) in the evenings because I wanted someone to talk to. The idea of a 3 day solo vacation now sounds unbelievably amazing.

Yes! Pre COVID I would take a yearly solo vacation but I’m on the east coast so not super helpful to you in terms of locations. I did do a cruise solo and LOVED it.
I'm tapped out. The last 2.5 years have been a total drain on me. I don't have any girlfriends that can take a trip with me anytime soon. DH travels for work a couple times a month and I just need a break. I WFH and have had the kids with me all summer.

When I was in Miami a few years ago we stayed at the North end of South beach and it was lovely and low key. It seemed like there were lots of posher hotels in the area and it was beautiful and quieter but just a shortish walk down the beach when we wanted to go out. Really though we spent most of our time on the beach or by the pool drinking cortados and rum drinks. We did go see the Wynwood walls, and that was cool and rode out to the Everglades one day, which was nice-ish but not a must do imo. The hotel we stayed at was the Durham and I would definitely recommend it. The pool/garden area is stunning. I know nothing about hurricane season, though, so can’t weigh in there.

NYC in September is also nice but totally different and if it were me trying to blow off steam from the last 2 years I would definitely pick Miami.

Either way have fun!

I'm trying to plan a girls trip to florida and we need to stick to the Miami area due to flying logistics. However, we are a low key group and our club hopping days are way behind us. Any recommendations on areas to stay in or places to go?

Follow up question, we are planning on going in September. I know this is hurricane season. Is this a dumb idea and should we just be looking somewhere else completely? Our other option is NYC.

@autumnleaves: thanks for this info!! appreciate it :)

@hummusgirl: I'll look into the science museum! Thanks for that info! Yeah...my son has been to an aquarium once and it was such a waste of money for us because he couldn't have cared less. Weird! Oh well. Haha.

@krispi: Ahhhh, ok thank you for differentiating! I will check it out. We will probably be staying out of the more touristy areas for food if/when we can help it. I'll check out the pizza place though!
