I was there for work recently and had the most amazing meal at Red Ash downtown. I think you have to get reservations pretty far in advance but it was so good!

Any updates or other recs for Austin? I'm so excited to be going with 3 friends in February for a *very* belated (by 2 years) 40th birthday trip for all of us. We're planning to hike, relax, shop, and eat, but don't have anything specific in mind yet.

@foodiebee: so true! this thread has helped me realize too that a lot of the things we already do have similar risk levels. Like, it doesn't seem that different if *I* fly than if I visit indoors with a vaxxed relative who has recently flown

@nana87: I would feel comfortable, especially in light of the new info they just sent out. I've flown once, and on my flight, everyone wore their mask without a problem and it helped me feel safe. Double up your mask if it will help mitigate some of the anxiety! I totally get being anxious. I also think you have to safely push against that anxiety when you can, in ways that you're able, to help yourself grow back to a health place mentally after all this trauma. Just my take!

Thanks so much, everyone! Sooo much to think about and I still haven’t made a decision. The couple sent out a note this weekend to say they’re requiring everyone to be masked and tested, and that the event is mostly outdoors though masks req’d for indoor portions (dancing in a room adjacent to the outdoor area— which is odd lol). So, that feels decently safe to me… but the flights still freak me out! I haven’t flown in 19 months….

I voted go. But I’d wear a real N95 (demetech has been my go to brand) for the entire travel day and also at the wedding if it’s indoors. We don’t take off masks in any indoor public space and am sort of used to being the weird masked one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd go, I think. I am irrationally scared of flying with kids, but it's the flying and not the covid that scares me. Can't do a thing about it, I know we'll have to fly if I want to see my cousins, but I'm not ready :bummed:

If it was just me flying without kids, I'd do it no problem.

I voted to go because I am still keeping some previously made travel plans despite delta, but honestly, it would probably depend on my relationship with the cousin and how much I actually wanted to be there and whether the risk was worth it (personally I am not super close with a lot of my cousins)

@nana87: I thought last year the precautions were working amazingly, but now with the same precautions the kids seem to be constantly sick, just with a lot more crud returning to the community to get sick from as people return to normal lives. I'm trying to see everything they catch now as something they'll be immune to when we have a newborn in a few months, but ughhhh... luckily none of it has been covid yet but I'm over it and it's still SUMMER, not even cold and flu season yet...

@nana87: I would go, and I did actually just take a similar trip for the funeral of a family member. It went fine, though I will say that, as others have mentioned, I felt more unsafe at the reception after the funeral than while traveling. Everyone wore masks for the wake and funeral, but the reception, similar to a wedding reception, involved sitting at tables, eating, talking, etc. I do know that all my extended family members are vaxxed, though, and that’s who I was closest to/talking to! So that did make me feel more comfortable.

@Pollywog: ugh yeah, I don't want to pass anything to my kids! I'd probably quarantine myself after coming home until I get a test (my parents have an extra bedroom where I could stay), but that's more time away from my kids...

@periwinklebee: that is so true, and they are in school/preschool, though with a lot of precautions in place that at least last year prevented transmission within classrooms...fingers crossed for this year, but you're so right, it is going to be SUCH a long year yet again....

@Corduroy: such a good point. We still only see such a limited number of people that I've let my guard down a bit but this would be waaay widening that circle

btw, my kids are in daycare and since other families there have started traveling, etc. a ton more, my kids have been constantly sick with colds etc (despite the fact that we haven't traveled and all our activities have been outside). They're home again now since last week and I'm sure classroom closures due to exposures are coming. Maybe with older kids it's a bit different, but with the little ones I feel like everything the 10+ other kids in their class do is effectively what we do germ wise, as they seem to catch whatever their classmates happen to have. And what they're doing is definitely more exposure than a vaxed parent traveling alone and attending an event. I'm exhausted and wish this wasn't the case, but it's just reality. It's going to be a very long year...

I think it would depend on the event/weekend itself for me. I feel like I could handle being very careful in the airport and on the plane. But it would be harder for me to be so careful around family and friends if that wasn't the vibe at the event.

DH just had to back out of his uncle's memorial because he recognized that he'll want to fit in with family, have a drink, and let his guard way down in a hot spot among unvaccinated people.

It's possible that you could get it even though vaxed (probably mildly) and pass it to your kids. But if they are in daycare or school, it's significantly more likely that they will get it from an unvaxed kid that they are also around on a daily basis. I don't think there's a right answer, really depends on how much you want to go versus tolerance for risk and how exposed your family is already...

My BIL got covid in March, vaccinated in April, and tested positive last week. He spread it to his kid (who had covid in March) and pregnant wife (who had covid and the vaccine). The adults are asymptomatic and the tot is mildly symptomatic.

So given all of that, I wouldn't unless you're okay with potentially giving it to your kids. I don't want a 2+ week quarantine from school, so I'd pass.

My cousin is getting married later this month, across the country. She was originally supposed to get married last year, like so many others. There's no direct flight, so it basically requires a day of traveling each way, with a layover in a COVID hotspot. I already RSVP'd yes, thinking that since I was vaxxed it'd be pretty safe...but now with Delta and breakthrough cases, and my los<12 NOT being vaxxed, I'm second guessing.

Kids and dh were always going to stay home since we aren't comfortable with them flying unvaxxed, plus it's a long way for them to go for a short trip (Thurs-Sun), and with the time change they wouldn't be able to stay awake for the wedding anyway (EST-adjusted kids at an evening MST wedding? no way lol).

What would you do if you were me?

An update: We leave next Friday, and I can't wait! Here's our plan:
Day one: Wine tastings around Dundee, including Stoller, and and olive mill tour at Durant
Day two: Spend the day in Portland, including food trucks, Powells, seeing some historic buildings (DH is an architect), The Lents farmers market (I think) and just relaxing. Possibly a hike in Forest Park or seeing one of the gardens
Day three: Drive to Cannon Beach to see the puffins and hang out at the beach, possibly trying to find a place to hike on the way
So many great Portland restaurants have closed recently, including Pok Pok and Beast, so that's sad. But we're considering these restaurants: Jam for breakfast, 3 Doors Down, Kenny and Zuke's, and Screen Door. Any other suggestions for casual dinner or lunch? Or a casual breakfast?

@Portboston: and @julie31: Thanks! Those are all great recs. We are hoping that places will be open for patio dining since, even when vaccinated, I'm not sure how we'll feel about eating inside. There's also a little patio at our Airbnb, so we can always get take out. I'm excited for the idea of hiking and wineries. We will be there 4 nights. Do you think that a full day to explore the actual city is enough, especially considering that not everything will be open? That would give us more time for wineries and hiking.

I love browsing at Powell's downtown.

You can check out the Japanese garden, and Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.

I would also drive to the Columbia Gorge. Lots of cool hikes along the way (Multnomah falls, Wahclella falls, Beacon rock to name just a few).

And I second the winery suggestion from the previous poster. Stoller is our favorite. It's also not too far from the Evergreen aviation and space museum which is really nice (but I'm an aviation nerd).

Food wise: I haven't dined in downtown Portland since covid. I've googled all my favorite restaurants and they're still all closed to on site dining. But you can still get sweets: blue star donuts, and Salt and Straw is a must-have for ice cream.

I live in Beaverton and work in south waterfront. I used to live in southeast portland but I don’t cross the river much anymore and try to avoid downtown these days. I’m hoping the tide changes with the nicer weather and vaccine but downtown has gotten pretty bad over the last year. Tons of boarded up businesses and the homeless camps have spread. They’re going to start to do sweeps soon so hopefully that helps. If you want to stay downtown, stick to the Pearl area. NW 23rd is nice also, and walkable.
As far as activities - I just went ziplining yesterday at Pumpkin Ridge and it was SO fun. I highly recommend it. Their website says it’s a two-three hour activity but our group was small so it only took about an hour
We have great wineries out towards Sherwood and Dundee. Stoller is super nice as well as Ponzi. I’ve heard good thing about Fairsing also.
The coast is beautiful if you want to take a drive out there. (About 3 hours away).
Mt Hood is a short drive away (about an hour) and you can rent a canoe on Trillium Lake. It’s SO beautiful. Plenty of hikes out that way and in the gorge.
If you’re looking to stay closer to the city, there are also hikes close - forest park has a ton and Tryon State Park is pretty close.
You can hit up the rose garden and check out the pittock mansion. Tons of history there and I think the entry is only $10 for the tour. But you can go on the grounds for free, really nice view up there.
Portland City Grill is great for happy hour. It’s in a tall building and has good views across the river. They open at 4pm and there used to be people waiting in the elevator banks to go up to the restaurant so if you want to check it out get there early!
I don’t get out a ton anymore with Covid so I’m not even sure which restaurants are still around but I can ask a friend of mine who’s active on the dating scene if you would like!

We're going to be heading to Portland in June for our 10 year wedding anniversary  This will be our first time going away in quite awhile since our daughter was born just 4 months before the pandemic started. The plan is to be there for 4 nights. I'd love recommendations for anything - what to do, what neighborhood to stay in, and where to eat. We've never been there before. Thanks!
