OK ladies. That time again! I need a good drama to watch nightly. Handmaids tale just ended (I wasn’t impressed with this season). And I’m ready for something new. I have Apple TV, HBO+, and all the basic streaming services. Help me avoid intense nighttime boredom! :silly:

My 6 yo DD has a kindle fire and she discovered a bunch of Barbie games and shows that I loathe because of the distorted view of women Barbie represents. We talked about it and she said she just really likes the fashion aspect--dressing up a model and picking outfits, accessories, etc. That part I'm happy to encourage! So my question is do any of your kids watch fashion-centered shows or play games/apps that are less "loathe-inducing" from this feminist mama?

Not that we really need more screen time, but my 5.5 year old still watches Paw Patrol as his primary show (he also has two younger brothers who also love it). I feel like he should be moving on to something else, plus I have had it up to my eyeballs with Adventure Bay. Anyone have any recommendations for good shows for an almost 6 year old boy? We have pretty much every streaming service at our disposal.

Husband is off next week so we are planning to watch some movies together. From our local library I got-
Sully
Where'd You Go Bernadette
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Lincoln Lawyer (we both saw this one ages ago but wanted to watch it again since it has been awhile).

For TV we have been binging Grey's Anatomy. We are on season 7. We also love true crime so we have watched most of the documentaries on Netflix.

I'd love to start a Christmas movie tradition with my kids and this definitely feels like the year to start. I was thinking about buying How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original), but then I wondered if there were better holiday movies for kids? What do your kids like?

My other thread about holiday movies got me thinking that I'd love to have a regular movie night tradition with my kids. Growing up we watched Lois and Clark and ate popcorn every Sunday evening and I remember how much I loved that.

So, do you have any movie night traditions? How regularly do you do it? Who picks the movie? Any foods that go along?

DS is 4.5 and has a really hard time with movies that have any suspense or scary parts. We have tried Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc and Toy Story and he couldn’t watch them. We tried Sesame Street “the cookie thief” and that was too much too. (Though, tangent: if you’re looking for a movie to explain implicit bias To your children, you should watch this)

He was able to watch The Secret Life of Pets and Shrek but refuses to watch them again. Does anyone have any suggestions for movies he might like? He loves the Dinosaur Train movie “Center of the Earth”, but I’d really like to watch something else. His favorite shows are “The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That” and “dinosaur train”. Thanks for any suggestions!

We’ve had a Friday movie night going for a while now...but I’m feeling a little over our regular go-to movie options. My five and a half year old is a super sensitive kid - she’s very overwhelmed by anything scary or sad, and it rules out a lot of movies. She was even afraid of Lucifer the cat in Cinderella, which I thought was a tame otherwise. (I mean, aside from the big picture premise - but that’s over her head!)

Aristocrats was a hit, she enjoyed the Fox and the Hound 2 (not the original)...and some random movie about a cat at Christmas that we found on Netflix has gone over really well. But it’s in German, so I’m pretty sure the only reason it doesn’t get to her is that she doesn’t understand what they’re saying and just likes watching the animated cat. 😂

Any recommendations for happier movies that have gone over well with your kids? Even better if there are animals or princesses in them!

I am not much of a stand up person, but I kind of have a crush on Seth Meyers so DH and I watched last weekend. I laughed so hard at his description of his wife's deliveries that I spit my beer out. Anyway, just a PSA that if you need a good chuckle you should check it out :)

Are any appropriate for a 3.5 year old that feature Bumblebee that I can stream? I googled it but it seems like there's a lot of transformer stuff out there, haha. Help!

The other night DH and I were trying to come up with a fun holiday movie for our girls to watch while we got some things done around the house....and as we thought about it, we kept striking out. So many holiday themed movies cast doubt on the existence of Santa - kids who don't believe, adults who scorn kids who believe, Santa dying (The Santa Clause)....other than animated classics like Rudolph, Frosty, and the Grinch, I'm wondering what is "safe" for my 4 and 6 year old daughters! Currently both believe strongly in all the "magic" aspects of the holiday season, and I don't want to throw a wrench in that, particularly because they also have a two year old sister and I worry the years of everyone being on the same page are going to be few!

I know there are lots of Hallmark-ish movies on Netflix (Santa Paws, etc.) geared at the younger set, but I haven't had time to dig deeper into the actual content - I'm hoping someone has seen a few they can recommend.

This feature was just rolled out recently, from what I understand. You have to be on a desktop or laptop to access it.

Go to Settings and then Parental Controls. You'll be able to restrict shows by rating (Young Kids, Older Kids, etc.) and set a PIN to access those shows.

Below that, you can search for specific movies or shows and require the PIN to access them. For example, all the Barbie movies are normally allowed under the Young Kids category. But now, if my DD tries to access them, it will require a PIN.

BARBIE'S REIGN IS OVER!

I only wish you could hide the movie or show as well, so it wouldn't show up in the suggestion reel. But at least this is something!

We love Winnie the Pooh and we are currently reading the book together. I am dying to go to the theater to watch the Christopher Robin movie with DH and DS (6.5 yo) but am also concerned the movie is probably one of those productions for grown ups (or at least older kids).

DS has not watched the Winnie the Pooh cartoons (unsure if he had watched it at school or camp though), but he had seen a Winnie the Pooh theatre production while he was doing summer camp, and we are reading the book. So he knows most of the stories and characters. However, he has yet to really watch and finish a real movie in the movie theater.... the last time he went 2 years ago it was traumatic. We were watching finding dory and he had to leave halfway because he was traumatized dory couldn’t find her parents and he cried as if I died. Gosh. But that was 2 years ago.

Thoughts and advice? Thanks!!!

Totally not a critical post :silly:

We finally got a smart tv with roku built in so we can stream a lot of things. Our old system was an ancient TiVo which we used to record antenna tv, mostly pbs (haven’t had cable in years). But with better streaming this seems kind of silly to pay monthly for dvr? The one time I find we use it most is taping specials and holiday shows - but maybe most of those will also stream? Just curious what others have done. Thanks!

This seems really off: https://www.wfmynews2.com/article/entertainment/movies/mom-blogs-are-urging-parents-to-not-take-children-to-this-movie/77-556750625

Has anyone seen the movie? Is it as bad as it sounds? We don't go to the theater anyway, but I'll have to remember to skip this one when it comes out on Netflix.

I’m kind of a TV snob and usually only like non-network TV like HBO, etc. But, I finally gave This is Us a try and ended up loving it. I binged it within about a week. Now I’m sad it’s over! Please send me your recommendations on what to binge next.
